feat(common): add an optional claim reader to the attempt journal - #709
It returns the reservation IDs that a different idempotency token has recorded as purchased. It's optional: a journal finds it by type assertion, so existing AttemptJournal implementers keep compiling. The PurchaseOptions.AttemptJournal doc now mentions it. Nothing reads it yet. The Redshift duplicate guard starts using it in a follow-up change, because providers/aws pins pkg by version.
Why
The Redshift guard can adopt a node that another purchase lineage bought within its ~5-minute window, which is an under-buy with double attribution. With this read, the guard can skip nodes another lineage already recorded. The follow-up holds the behaviour, its tests and the probes.
Verification
go build and go vet pass under GOWORK=off, and go test ./common/ passes.
The follow-up branch passes its tests against this interface.
A separate agent reviewed both changes adversarially in two passes and approved them.
Purchase providers can now optionally check whether nodes were claimed by other purchases and skip them, helping avoid duplicate purchase attempts. Existing journals without claim-check support continue to work as before. When claim status cannot be determined, it is reported as unknown rather than treated as an indication that the nodes are available.
An AttemptJournal may also implement ClaimReader so a provider client can
ask which of a set of reservation IDs another token recorded as purchased.
Found by type assertion; journals without it behave as before.

Walkthrough
This change adds the optional common.ClaimReader interface for retrieving IDs claimed by attempts under other tokens. It documents the interface’s behavior and notes its use in PurchaseOptions and the changelog.
Changes: ClaimReader interface
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and document claim lookup pkg/common/attempt_journal.go, pkg/common/types.go, CHANGELOG.md
Adds ClaimReader.ClaimedByOthers(ctx, token, ids) and documents how empty results and errors are interpreted. The PurchaseOptions documentation and changelog describe the optional lookup and its use for skipping nodes recorded by another purchase.
The interface addition is compatible with existing journals, but its documentation overstates Redshift protection. Correct that wording; no new runtime failure is established.

Cold, non-author review of the change against main (2 commits, +15, no code paths). Spec: #700's proposal and #696's AttemptJournal contract (pkg/common/attempt_journal.go).
Blocking: none.
Checked
Minimal. One method, ClaimedByOthers(ctx, token, ids) ([]string, error), which is narrower than feat(redshift): skip nodes another purchase lineage recorded when deduping #700's sketch (ClaimedReservations returning a token map). The caller only needs to know which candidates to exclude, not who claimed them, so the subset form is enough. It's the right cut.
Read-only. The method has no write and no side effect in its contract.
Optional. It's a separate interface, found by type assertion on PurchaseOptions.AttemptJournal (attempt_journal.go:78-80). Existing AttemptJournal implementers keep compiling, and a journal without it, or a nil journal, leaves behaviour unchanged. Nothing in providers reads it yet, so this PR changes no behaviour.
"Recorded as purchased" matches the record model: only AttemptPurchased records carry a ReservationID (attempt_journal.go:24-26, enforced by Validate, :40-52).
Docs. The types.go:473-474 note and the CHANGELOG line are accurate.
Non-blocking
Docs: name the ids.ids should say they're reservation IDs, the values recorded in AttemptRecord.ReservationID, so an implementer doesn't key on offering IDs.
Docs: what an error means for the caller. "Any error means the claims are not known" is right, but the caller contract should say the provider must refuse before sending on an error, as the other journal reads do (feat(redshift): skip nodes another purchase lineage recorded when deduping #700: "an error refuses before the send"). Put it on the interface, or make sure PR-B's tests pin it.
Decorators hide it. Because discovery is by type assertion, a decorator around an AttemptJournal, such as a metrics or logging wrapper on the platform side, silently hides ClaimReader and turns the dedupe off. A sentence warning implementers to forward it would help. Alternatively, the platform can assert it at wiring time.
CHANGELOG spacing. The new entry has no blank line before the next entry, while the rest of ### Added separates entries with one.
CI at 75a9810, checked when I posted: 2 SUCCESS and 10 still pending. I read the code only: an interface declaration with no implementation, so there was nothing to mutate.
Cold review of the full diff: pkg/common only, an interface plus docs.
Checked
Minimal.ClaimReader has one method, ClaimedByOthers(ctx, token, ids) ([]string, error). It's exactly the query the follow-up needs: which of these candidate reservation IDs another lineage recorded as purchased. It adds no state values and no other methods.
Read-only and optional.
It's a separate interface, found by type assertion on PurchaseOptions.AttemptJournal, so AttemptJournal itself is unchanged and every existing implementer still compiles.
A journal without it behaves as before. With no journal at all, Redshift's journalActive (token and journal) is false, so nothing reaches the assertion.
The name and doc describe a pure query.
Docs are accurate and consistent.
The set semantics are clear. An ID recorded by both the given token and another token is returned, since another token recorded it. An ID that only the given token recorded is not returned. An empty result excludes nothing.
Nit (non-blocking). Like AttemptJournal, the doc says "Any error means the claims are not known". It could also spell out the caller rule PR-B relies on: treat an error as unknown, never as "none claimed". For example, add "callers must not proceed as if nothing were claimed". The fail-closed decision itself belongs to the PR-B consumer and its tests.
Local verification (macOS, at this SHA, GOWORK=off):go vet ./common/ is OK, and go test ./common/ passes. The change is an interface and docs only, so there's no behavior to mutation-probe; PR-B carries the consumer probes. CI was running when I posted this.

cccc6ca (docs only). The PurchaseOptions.AttemptJournal comment in pkg/common/types.go now says Redshift reads ClaimReader only "from the follow-up change to providers/aws onward (go#700)". That's accurate: nothing in providers reads it at this head.
Non-blocking notes from 75a9810. They're unchanged and still optional: name the ids as reservation IDs, state that the caller refuses on error, and warn that decorators hide the interface.
CI at dc5a275 was still running when I checked (1 NEUTRAL, 11 pending). Merge once it's green.
cccc6ca (docs). The PurchaseOptions.AttemptJournal comment now says a ClaimReader journal lets Redshift skip nodes another purchase recorded "from the follow-up change to providers/aws onward". That is accurate: providers/aws pins pkg by version, and nothing reads ClaimReader until PR-B. No code changed.
dc5a275 (main merge, fix(azure): make managedredis the only Azure Redis recommendation producer #702). Its parents are cccc6ca and b21e497. --remerge-diff is empty, and the merge diff is byte-identical to main's own change since the merge base: the managedredis producer change. None of it touches the ClaimReader contract.
My earlier evidence carries over: go vet and go test ./common/, interface and docs only.
Approvals at this SHA: claude-cc-libs and claude-qa-ui-3.
CI and state: CI green, 0 unresolved threads (the CodeRabbit doc thread was fixed in cccc6ca, verified, then resolved), and CLEAN. The branch contains current main.
Local:go build and go test ./common/ pass under GOWORK=off. The follow-up Redshift branch passes against this interface.
