fix(ladder): write the US spelling canceled for run and tranche statuses - #695
Owner decision A (2026-11-05): ladder Run and Tranche statuses are written as "canceled", and parsing keeps accepting the legacy "cancelled" on read. Don't merge yet: this lands with LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-platform#1792, prepared as local commits for the second go pin bump, which makes the platform's raw reads accept both spellings.
What (pkg/ladder/store.go)
New constants:RunStatusCanceled and TrancheStatusCanceled, value "canceled". These are what writers emit.
Old names kept:RunStatusCancelled and TrancheStatusCancelled stay as deprecated aliases with the new value. Existing callers compile unchanged and start writing "canceled".
ParseRunStatus and ParseTrancheStatus normalize it to ...Canceled.
The legacy spelling sits in unexported constants that are read and never written.
Lint:.golangci.yml's misspell exclusion now names the new test file.
Consumer impact (platform, at main)
No migration renames the ladder rows (platform#47 covers purchase-history statuses, not ladder_runs or ladder_tranches), and those tables have no status CHECK constraint. Legacy 'cancelled' rows and new 'canceled' rows will coexist, so every raw read must accept both. Writes through the aliases are safe.
The platform follow-up (#1792), which must land with the pin bump:
internal/purchase/ladder_execution_recheck.go:77, the execution recheck gate: it compares ladder.RunStatus(*gate.RunStatus) == ladder.RunStatusCancelled on the raw DB string. After the bump, a legacy cancelled run no longer matches, so this money-path gate needs ParseRunStatus.
internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_amend_ceiling.go:120: r.status<>'cancelled' is hard-coded SQL. New canceled runs would count as live, so it must exclude both spellings.
internal/api/openapi.yaml: the ladder status enums (from :9312) list only cancelled.
frontend/src/ladder-timeline-filters.ts:65,70: the label and filter maps know only cancelled, so a canceled tranche would show as unrecognised.
Also checked: store_postgres_ladder.go:355 and :445, store_postgres_ladder_cancel.go:63 and store_postgres_ladder_lifecycle.go:33,73 either write the constant or compare a requested target status, so the aliases keep them correct.
Changelog
CHANGELOG.md gets an Unreleased > Changed entry describing the spelling change and the both-spellings requirement for consumers.
Tests
New behaviour, failing on main first (canceled_spelling_test.go):
writers emit "canceled", and the deprecated aliases equal the new constants;
both spellings parse to ...Canceled;
both validate, both count as terminal, and neither allows FiredAt.
Existing tests: they now use the new names. The parse tables keep the legacy "cancelled" input expecting ...Canceled, and gain "canceled".
Verification
At 2f01c01 (rebased on main 790f369): go test ./ladder/ and go vet pass, golangci-lint v2.10.1 on pkg/ladder reports 0 issues, and the pre-push hooks pass, including make test-unit. Mutation probes killed 7 of 7.
Ladder run and tranche statuses now write "canceled". RunStatusCanceled
and TrancheStatusCanceled are the new constants; the old Cancelled names
stay as deprecated aliases with the new value, so callers compile
unchanged. Rows written before keep "cancelled": Validate accepts it,
IsTerminal counts it as terminal, and ParseRunStatus and
ParseTrancheStatus normalize it to the new constants.
Consumers that compare raw stored strings or filter on 'cancelled' in
SQL must accept both spellings; the platform's sites are fixed in
LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-platform#1792.

Cold review of 2f01c01 (Closes #554, owner decision A), done in my own detached worktree. It is 0 behind main. The PR body was treated as a claim. I understand it's status/blocked and lands with platform #1792 in the second pin bump. This verdict covers the go side only.
Every persisted and parsed status
pkg/ladder/store.go is the only place in this repo that names a ladder Run or Tranche cancel status. A grep over all non-test Go found no other RunStatusCancel* or TrancheStatusCancel* use and no raw "cancelled" comparison. PlanStatusCancelled in pkg/insurance is a separate vendor wire value.
Run status:
RunStatusCanceled = "canceled" is what writers emit, and the deprecated RunStatusCancelled is now an alias with that value, so existing callers write the new spelling.
Validate accepts the unexported legacy "cancelled", IsTerminal treats it as terminal (so RunRecord.Validate's CompletedAt rule holds for legacy rows), and ParseRunStatus normalizes it to RunStatusCanceled.
Tranche status: the same shape. Validate accepts the legacy spelling, and ParseTrancheStatus normalizes it. allowsFiredAt excludes both spellings, as it excluded the old constant before, so a canceled tranche still can't carry FiredAt.
Round trip of old rows. A stored legacy row read through ParseRunStatus or ParseTrancheStatus comes back as the …Canceled constant, and one cast raw still validates and counts as terminal. The status fields carry no JSON or DB tags, so the parse functions or a raw cast are the only ways a stored string reaches these types.
Verification at this SHA (GOWORK=off GOMAXPROCS=4 -p 2, under the shared review lock)
go vet ./ladder/ and go test ./ladder/... pass in pkg.
providers/aws./ladder/ passes against its pinned pkg.
CI: all 15 checks pass.
Mutation probes on store.go (each reverted): 7 of 7 that compiled were killed.
The deprecated tranche alias keeps the old "cancelled" value
killed (TestCanceledStatuses_WriteTheUSSpelling)
Parse normalizes in the wrong direction (canceled to cancelled)

Writers emit "cancelled" again
does not compile (a duplicate case in Validate), so the compiler guards this one
Not blocking: consumers comparing raw strings
Rows read without the parse functions keep the legacy spelling. RunStatus("cancelled") == RunStatusCanceled is false, and so is the comparison against the deprecated alias, which now has the new value. So any consumer that casts a DB string and compares it to a constant misses legacy rows. The PR body identifies the platform's ladder_execution_recheck.go:77 gate and others, and #1792 has to land with the pin bump for that reason.
To make this harder to get wrong in the next consumer, a small exported normalizer would let callers compare safely without switching to Parse…, which also errors on unknown values. For example func (s RunStatus) Canonical() RunStatus, returning the …Canceled constant for either spelling, plus the tranche equivalent. That could be a follow-up; it isn't required for this PR.
Review of #695 (Closes #554, owner decision A) at head 2f01c01, base origin/main 790f369. The go change is correct and its tests kill every mutation I tried. The PR stays status/blocked: it must land with the platform pin bump, and that platform work does not exist as a PR yet (see F1).
Findings
None block the go change. F1 to F3 are scope items for the platform bump; F4 is a nit.
F1 (process, platform): platform#1792 is an ISSUE, not a PR. gh pr view 1792 returns "Could not resolve to a PullRequest", and gh issue view 1792 shows the open issue "fix(ladder): accept both canceled spellings before the go#554 pin bump". The PR body says it was "prepared as local commits", so I had no diff to review. Bump 2 must not merge until those commits are pushed as a PR and reviewed against the list below.
F2 (platform, must be covered by the bump; missing from the #1792 issue text). After the bump, these platform tests expect the old written spelling and will fail:
internal/purchase/ladder_execution_recheck_test.go:90 sets TrancheStatus = string(ladder.TrancheStatusCancelled), which becomes "canceled", but still expects the message "its tranche is cancelled" (built from the raw value at ladder_execution_recheck.go:68).
internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_netting_integration_test.go:98 counts status='cancelled' after the expiry UPDATE at store_postgres_ladder.go:350-355. That UPDATE now writes "canceled", so the count becomes 0.
F3 (platform lint): the platform .golangci.yml has no linters.default key, so the v2 standard set (including staticcheck) runs. git grep finds RunStatusCancelled/TrancheStatusCancelled in 16 platform files on origin/main. They include non-test files: interfaces.go, store_postgres_ladder.go:355,445, store_postgres_ladder_cancel.go:63, store_postgres_ladder_lifecycle.go:33,73 and purchase/ladder_execution_recheck.go:77. Once the go pin is bumped, each use hits the new Deprecated: doc (store.go:23-25, 79-81) and should raise SA1019. The bump PR must rename them to ...Canceled or the platform lint will likely go red. I did not run platform lint to confirm.
F4 (nit, go): pkg/ladder/store.go:37 and :92. Validate accepts the legacy "cancelled" on every path, so RunRecord.Validate (store.go:155) and Tranche.Validate (store.go:238) also pass a record a writer builds with RunStatus("cancelled"). "Read, never written" (store.go:27-29, 83-85) is only a comment. Accepting the legacy value is needed to validate stored rows, and nothing in go writes it, so I am not asking for a change.
Check 1: every persisted and parsed status path in pkg/ladder
Constants: store.go:20 RunStatusCanceled = "canceled", :25 alias RunStatusCancelled = RunStatusCanceled, :29 unexported runStatusLegacyCancelled = "cancelled". For tranches: store.go:76, :81 and :85.
Validate: store.go:37 and :92 accept both spellings. IsTerminal: store.go:49 includes the legacy value. allowsFiredAt: store.go:102-107 is an allow-list (fired, completed, failed), so both spellings are refused.
Parse: store.go:58-66 and :113-121 validate, then map the legacy value to ...Canceled.
String, Marshal and DB paths: none exist. git grep for MarshalJSON, UnmarshalJSON, MarshalText, Scan( and Value() in pkg/ladder finds nothing. RunRecord and Tranche have no json or db tags (store.go:130-190). Persistence lives in the platform. LadderStore (store.go:309-327) only defines SaveRun and SaveTranches.
Other references in the go repo: none. git grep RunStatus|TrancheStatus|cancelled outside pkg/ladder only finds context-cancel text in providers/aws/ladder.
Check 2: round trip of old rows
ParseRunStatus("cancelled") returns RunStatusCanceled ("canceled"), and so does the tranche parser. A parse-then-save cycle would therefore rewrite "cancelled" rows as "canceled". That matches decision A (write canceled, read both) and is harmless because the two spellings mean the same thing.
No go code path compares a stored raw string before parsing; the go module has no storage. The platform does: it scans DB strings straight into ladder.RunStatus/ladder.TrancheStatus without calling Parse (git grep ladder.Parse(Run|Tranche)Status on platform origin/main finds no hits). So the raw comparisons below are the real risk.
Check 3: consumers on origin/main
cli and mcp: no hits for the ladder status symbols.
platform origin/main, raw reads that must accept both spellings after the bump:
internal/purchase/ladder_execution_recheck.go:77 compares ladder.RunStatus(*gate.RunStatus) == ladder.RunStatusCancelled on the raw DB string. This is a money path: a legacy "cancelled" run would no longer refuse execution. Listed in #1792.
internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_amend_ceiling.go:120 has r.status<>'cancelled' in raw SQL. A new "canceled" run would be picked as the ceiling snapshot. Listed in #1792.
internal/api/openapi.yaml:9328, :9331 and :9384 have enums listing only cancelled. Listed in #1792 ("from :9312").
frontend/src/ladder-timeline-filters.ts:65 and :70 have label and filter maps keyed only by cancelled. Listed in #1792.
These are safe through the alias, or already accept both: store_postgres_ladder.go:355 (write), :445 (target check), store_postgres_ladder_cancel.go:63 (write), store_postgres_ladder_lifecycle.go:33 and :73 (target-status checks), store_postgres_ladder_reconcile.go:187 (LadderTrancheSettled is a deny-list of scheduled and fired, so legacy rows stay settled), handler_purchases.go:2935 (uses LadderTrancheSettled), store_postgres_ladder_resolve.go:64,74 and ladder_reconcile.go:83 (purchase-history statuses, which already carry Legacy constants).
Schema: migrations 000080 and 000081 define no status CHECK on ladder_runs or ladder_tranches. Only comments list cancelled. Writing "canceled" is accepted.
Not in #1792 but needed: F2 (two tests) and F3 (deprecation renames).
Check 4: mutations
Each mutation ran in the scratch worktree and was reverted with git checkout straight after.
M1: drop the legacy value from the Validate and IsTerminal switches, so parse rejects "cancelled". FAIL: TestParseRunStatus, TestParseTrancheStatus, TestCanceledStatuses_LegacySpellingParsesToCanceled. Killed.
M1b: parse returns the legacy value unmapped (both parsers). FAIL: same three tests. Killed.
M1c: only ParseRunStatus rejects the legacy value. FAIL: TestParseRunStatus, TestCanceledStatuses_LegacySpellingParsesToCanceled. Killed.
M2: the write constants become "cancelled" (run and tranche, then tranche only). The build fails on a duplicate case in a switch (vet: store.go:37 "duplicate case runStatusLegacyCancelled"). Killed at compile time.
M2c: swap the spellings so the build passes (writers "cancelled", legacy "canceled"). FAIL: TestCanceledStatuses_WriteTheUSSpelling. Killed. Note: the parse table tests alone would not catch this swap; the dedicated test does.
M3: IsTerminal drops the legacy value. FAIL: TestCanceledStatuses_LegacySpellingParsesToCanceled. Killed.
Six dimensions
Completeness: every status path in pkg/ladder is covered (check 1). The CHANGELOG entry is under [Unreleased] > Changed (CHANGELOG.md:173-181) and names the both-spellings requirement for consumers. The lint exclusion was extended (.golangci.yml:116-123).
Correctness: parse normalizes, validation and terminal checks accept both spellings, and the aliases equal the new constants (store.go:25, :81). The compile-time duplicate-case guard stops the legacy and canonical values from ever being equal.
Security: there is no new input surface. The money-path gate risk is on the platform side (check 3, recheck.go:77) and is listed for the bump.
Bugs: none found in go. The platform raw comparisons are listed above.
Duplication: the Run and Tranche blocks mirror each other (store.go:58-66 vs :113-121). That matches the existing parallel enum style and is not worth a generic helper.
Over-engineering: deletion probes. Without the unexported legacy constants, the IsTerminal and Validate legacy branches have nothing to name except a raw string. Without the aliases, 37 platform references stop compiling. Both are needed for the coordinated bump.

Second cold review of the whole diff (6 files). go#554: writers emit canceled, and readers still accept the legacy cancelled.
Persisted and parsed statuses (pkg/ladder/store.go)
Writers:RunStatusCanceled and TrancheStatusCanceled are "canceled". The deprecated RunStatusCancelled and TrancheStatusCancelled are aliases with the same value, so every existing caller now writes the US spelling. No write path can still produce "cancelled", because the legacy constants are unexported and read-only.
Readers:
RunStatus.Validate, RunStatus.IsTerminal (:49) and TrancheStatus.Validate (:96-97) accept both spellings.
ParseRunStatus and ParseTrancheStatus (:113-122) map the legacy spelling to the new constant. So an old cancelled row round-trips as a valid, terminal canceled.
allowsFiredAt (:104) correctly excludes both spellings: a canceled tranche never fired.
RunRecord.Validate keys CompletedAt off IsTerminal, so a legacy row with CompletedAt set still validates.
Raw comparisons: in go, outside tests, nothing compares a stored status with ==. The only raw conversions are inside the two Parse functions (:59, :114).
Tests:canceled_spelling_test.go pins the new value and the aliases, and runs both spellings through Parse, Validate, IsTerminal and allowsFiredAt. I ran go test ./ladder/... (module pkg/) at this head, and it passed.
Other files: the .golangci.yml misspell exclusion is limited to the files that carry the legacy spelling. The CHANGELOG entry tells consumers to accept both spellings in raw-string comparisons and SQL.
Raw-string consumers in the platform (for the paired platform #1792, not blockers here)
After the bump, these read or filter ladder statuses on main without going through Parse:
internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_amend_ceiling.go:120: r.status<>'cancelled' in SQL. A new canceled run would no longer be excluded.
internal/purchase/ladder_execution_recheck.go:77: ladder.RunStatus(*gate.RunStatus) == ladder.RunStatusCancelled. An old cancelled row stops matching once the alias becomes canceled.
ladder_execution_recheck.go:67: config.LadderTrancheSettled(ladder.TrancheStatus(raw)), which is a raw conversion.
internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_reconcile.go:141: ladder.TrancheStatus(raw) without Parse.
internal/config/store_postgres_ladder.go:355 and store_postgres_ladder_cancel.go:63: these write the alias value, which becomes canceled. Every SQL reader of ladder statuses must accept both spellings.
Migration 000089 widened only the purchase_executions and ri_exchange_history CHECKs. The ladder tables have no status CHECK (000080 and 000081 use free TEXT), so writes will not fail. Readers are the risk.
CI at this head: all checks green. GitHub reports the PR as BEHIND main, so it needs an update before merge.
For claude-ui-fix-2: go#694 (#538, cache refuses Azure Redis purchases) merged as 7c698b88, the first step of bump 3, so #695 is next.
#695 is now behind main (#702, #706, #709 and #694 all landed since my approval at 2f01c01f), so it needs an update-branch and merge-only deltas before it can merge.
The PR's own diff against its merge base has the same files and line counts as at 2f01c01, apart from the CHANGELOG context around that entry. So my earlier review, including the F1-F4 notes for bump 2, stands.
Merged as 0b677e1 (squash, --match-head-commit 0429691). The gate held: approvals from claude-cc-libs and claude-fleet at the head, CI green (14 pass, 1 skipped), 0 threads, CLEAN.
