What does this PR do?

dev build currently plans products as iOS apps and emits flat bundles. This selects deployment settings, device families, resource paths, and extension paths for iOS, tvOS, macOS, and Mac Catalyst. Mac apps use the standard Contents layout.

The Darwin SDK builder includes available Apple TV SDKs and Catalyst targets. Builds retain the SDK's actual Xcode/platform metadata and stamp the correct SDK version into Mach-O headers while preserving effective deployment minimums. SDK epoch 5 ensures existing installations rebuild with these definitions and the cross-import overlay settings. Linux Catalyst can select an updated linker through XTOOL_LD64_LLD; LLD 23 is required for current SDK arm64e reexports.

Desktop apps with Swift package resource bundles require SwiftBuild, selected automatically with Swift 6.4 or newer. Native SwiftPM builds reject this combination before compilation because their generated Bundle.module accessor cannot find resources in Contents/Resources. The check includes extension-only package resources. Native desktop apps without package resource bundles remain supported.

This does not add an Xcode project importer, asset compiler, or App Store distribution workflow.

How was it tested?

  • Ran swift test --build-system native --jobs 4, swift build --build-system native --jobs 4 --product xtool, and make lint with Swift 6.4 on Linux.
  • Built and installed a fresh Darwin SDK from the real Xcode 27.1 archive. Checked the SDK epoch, platform targets, retained build metadata, and cross-import overlay settings.
  • Built SwiftUI Release smoke apps for iOS, tvOS, macOS, and ARM64/Intel Catalyst using that SDK. The apps include a package resource and, for iOS/Catalyst, a PhotosPicker cross-import overlay. Inspected Mach-O platform, minimum OS, SDK version, and packaged resources.
  • Confirmed native SwiftPM's generated resource accessor uses the incompatible lookup. Checked the new CLI diagnostic with native-backend selection and added regression coverage for app and extension-only resources, accepted SwiftBuild/mobile builds, and native desktop apps with only root resources.

Native macOS/device execution, tvOS asset compilation, signing, and App Store processing remain unverified. The Xcode-dependent test was cancelled because XTL_TEST_XCODE_APP was not configured.

Platform and SDK metadata
Sources/PackLib/ApplePlatform.swift, Sources/PackLib/DarwinSDK.swift, Sources/PackLib/SDKBuildMetadata.swift, Tests/XToolTests/ApplePlatformTests.swift, Tests/XToolTests/DarwinSDKTests.swift, Tests/XToolTests/SDKBuildMetadataTests.swift
Platform parsing, deployment-target calculation, SDK-root lookup, and SDK build-metadata handling are added, with tests for platform and SDK metadata behavior.
Linker and build settings
Sources/PackLib/BuildSettings.swift, Sources/PackLib/LinkerConfiguration.swift, Sources/PackLib/Packer.swift, Tests/XToolTests/LinkerConfigurationTests.swift

SDK construction and status
Sources/XToolSupport/SDKBuilder.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/SDKCommand.swift, Tests/XToolTests/SDKBuilderTests.swift
SDK construction discovers configured Apple platforms and creates target definitions. SDK status can resolve a target SDK and print its build metadata.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0308b

Mac Catalyst builds fail for users who point xtool at a distribution-packaged LLD 23, even though that linker meets the requirement. Unsupported target triples such as watchOS, or a mistyped triple, are not rejected. Instead they produce a confusing late failure or an app labeled as iOS. Both are small, localized fixes that should be made before merge. Other platforms and the default iOS flow are not affected by these issues.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Parse the LLD version when the output starts with a vendor prefix.

majorVersion accepts only output whose first word is LLD. Distro and vendor builds put a prefix before it, for example Ubuntu LLD 23.1.0 (compatible with GNU linkers) or Homebrew LLD 23.1.0. For that output, words[0] is Ubuntu, so the function returns nil. validate then throws the "requires LLD 23 or newer" error, even though the linker meets the requirement.

This blocks Mac Catalyst builds and xtool sdk status --triple *-macabi for users who set XTOOL_LD64_LLD to a packaged LLD, which is the documented workaround. Find the LLD token anywhere in the output and parse the token after it.

Add a test case such as #expect(LinkerConfiguration.majorVersion("Ubuntu LLD 23.1.0 (compatible with GNU linkers)\n") == 23).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject unsupported target triples instead of falling back to iOS.

Line 156 maps any triple that ApplePlatform(triple:) cannot parse to .iOS. BuildSettings.platform uses the same fallback. Examples are arm64-apple-watchos, arm64-apple-visionos, and a mistyped arm64-apple-tvo. These triples pass the IPA and signing checks. The build then continues with the iOS bundle layout, iOS Info.plist keys, and iPhoneOS in CFBundleSupportedPlatforms, while the compile uses the other triple. The user gets a late or confusing failure, or a wrongly labeled bundle. The help text says only iOS, tvOS, macOS, and Mac Catalyst are supported. Fail early with a clear message.

P1 Badge Pass the accepted simulator names to ld64.lld

On Linux iOS or tvOS simulator builds, Packer now emits these values in -platform_version whenever the installed SDK supplies a version. The ld64.lld --help signature is -platform_version <platform> <min_version> <sdk_version>, but direct checks with LLD 21 and Ubuntu LLD 20 show that ios-sim and tvos-sim are rejected as malformed platform, while ios-simulator and tvos-simulator pass platform parsing. The SDK's current pre-23 linker therefore aborts these builds at the final link; return the long simulator platform names here.

P2 Badge Accept vendor-prefixed LLD version output

On Ubuntu and other systems with vendor-prefixed LLD builds, a valid XTOOL_LD64_LLD override is rejected: /usr/bin/ld64.lld-20 --version here prints Ubuntu LLD 20.1.8, and the same valid format with major 23 still fails this guard because token zero is not LLD. Catalyst users pointing the documented override at a distro ld64.lld-23 consequently still receive the “requires LLD 23” error; locate the LLD version after an optional vendor prefix instead.

P2 Badge Select versioned triples with the normalized SDK key

On Linux native-SwiftPM builds with a deployment-bearing newly supported triple such as arm64-apple-tvos17.0-simulator, this normalization is used only for xtool's metadata lookup: the invocation still passes raw triple to --swift-sdk, while SDKBuilder registers only arm64-apple-tvos-simulator. swift build --help describes that argument as a Swift SDK filter, and a direct probe reports No Swift SDK found matching query for the versioned key while accepting the normalized key, so the extracted triple minimum can never build. Use the normalized selector and account for its normalized native output directory, or pass the requested compiler triple separately.
