packer: pass -isysroot to clang when linking - #321

Conversation
swiftc hands clang --sysroot at link time, but clang's Darwin driver only reads SDKSettings.json for -isysroot. The linker then received the deployment target as the SDK version, so LC_BUILD_VERSION.sdk equaled minos (e.g. 17.0 instead of 27.1), which App Store Connect checks. Add -Xclang-linker -isysroot <sdk> to the linker settings of the app and extension targets when a Darwin SDK is installed.

The fixture contains only one matching versioned SDK per platform. A first-match implementation would pass these assertions, so the test does not detect a regression that selects

Use the sdkRootPath that swift-sdk.json records for the target triple, so the link uses the same SDK as the compilation when several versioned SDKs are installed. Bundles without the file, and triples it does not list, keep using the newest versioned SDK on disk.

Reviewed this statically (no Swift toolchain on my machine), so I traced the code paths rather than running builds — the objdump evidence in the description covers the runtime part.
What I could confirm from the code:
- The decoder keys line up with what SDKBuilder actually writes:
targetTriples/sdkRootPath(DarwinSDK.swift:53-58) match the writer at SDKBuilder.swift:786-794 and 218, including theDeveloper/Platforms/.../SDKs/<sdk>path shape from SDKBuilder.swift:131. ThedirExistsre-check on the resolved path is a good guard against stale metadata. versionless()(DarwinSDK.swift:73-77) correctly mapsarm64-apple-ios17.0-simulatoronto thearm64-apple-ios-simulatorkey that SDKBuilder emits. Since it strips digits from every component (arm64→arm,x86_64→x86), it would conflate per-arch metadata entries if those ever exist — harmless today with the current key set.- The
.application/.appExtensionswitch covers everything the planner can produce —Plan.ProductType(Planner.swift:341) has exactly those two cases — so no linked product type is silently missed. - The
#if os(macOS)nil-out insdkRootForLinking(Packer.swift:29-37) keeps the Xcode-toolchain path untouched, which matches "not tested on macOS" being safe.
Two nits:
- The fallback order can silently diverge compile and link SDKs: if
swift-sdk.jsonnames an SDK that doesn't exist on disk (partial install / manual prune),sdkRootFromMetadatareturns nil andnewestSDKRootpicks the newest versioned directory — not necessarily the SDK SwiftPM compiles against from the same metadata. Rare, but when it happens you get a link sysroot that disagrees with the compile sysroot with no diagnostic. A warning log when metadata exists but resolves to nothing would make this debuggable. -Xclang-linkeris a Swift-driver flag, so this works only because the generated.executableTargets each depend on a Swift product and therefore link through swiftc. If the stub.c-only builder targets ever end up linked by plain clang (SwiftPM driver-choice change), the flag becomes an unknown argument and the build fails loudly. Not a blocker, just something to keep in mind if the stub target scheme is refactored.
Noted the same-call-site overlap with #320 — the rebase note in the description is the right call whichever lands second.
When swift-sdk.json is present but has no entry for the triple, or names an SDK directory that is not on disk, the linker falls back to the newest versioned SDK, which may differ from the one SwiftPM compiles against. Keep the fallback but say so on stderr.

A swift-sdk.json that exists but cannot be read was reported as absent, so the fallback stayed silent. Report it as unreadable instead.
What does this PR do?
Fixes the SDK version recorded in
LC_BUILD_VERSIONof binaries built on Linux. It came out equal to the deployment target (sdk 17.0forminos 17.0) instead of the SDK version (sdk 27.1). App Store Connect checks that field against its minimum SDK, so such a build can be rejected even when it was built with a recent SDK.Root cause, in swift-driver rather than xtool: at link time swiftc invokes clang with
--sysroot <SDK>, but clang's Darwin driver only readsSDKSettings.json(and so only knows the SDK version) when it gets-isysroot. Without it, the-platform_versionclang hands to the linker has the deployment target in the SDK slot. On macOS, Xcode's toolchain already passes-isysroot, so the problem only shows up with the Linux Swift SDK. The proper fix belongs in swift-driver (use-isysrootfor Darwin targets); this PR works around it in xtool. It adds
-Xclang-linker -isysroot -Xclang-linker <SDK>to the linker settings of the app and extension targets in the generated.xtool-tmp/Package.swift, when a Darwin SDK is installed and the host is not macOS.DarwinSDK.sdkRoot(forTriple:)picks the versioned SDK directory (iPhoneOS27.1.sdk,iPhoneSimulator...,MacOSX...) matching the triple. Why not in the Swift SDK's
toolset.json:extraCLIOptionsonly takes literal absolute paths, while the SDK is built in a temporary directory, moved afterwards, and lives under a configurable config directory. It would have to be rewritten at install time andsdkEpochbumped, forcing every slim SDK user to reinstall. Doing it in the packer fixes already installed SDKs too. The downside is that a plainswift build --swift-sdk darwinoutside xtool does not benefit; that needs the swift-driver fix.How was it tested?
swift build --product xtoolandswift teston Linux (Podman, Swift 6.4,XTL_CI=1):Test run with 17 tests in 0 suites passed, including 3 new ones inPackerTests.swift(the flags, the generated settings for app and extension with path escaping, and SDK selection by triple).--strict: 0 violations.xtool new Hello, thenxtool dev build --ipa.llvm-objdump --macho --private-headerson the binary showsplatform ios,sdk 27.1,minos 17.0(before:sdk 17.0).sdk 27.1inLC_BUILD_VERSION) was accepted by App Store Connect: TestFlight buildsVALIDin about 2 minutes. Not tested: macOS hosts (unchanged code path), simulator and macOS triples beyond the unit test for SDK selection.
Merge note: #320 also turns the
linkerSettingsswitch into something testable; whichever lands second needs a small rebase.Part of #117.
