Expose pure local identification-risk helpers in the API - #259
Conversation
Introduce a safety module in tinymemory-api that classifies identification risk and performs structured redaction using only local matching, with no engine or runtime dependency. Hosts keep ownership of privacy policy and all I/O. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reordered the re-exports and test imports into a consistent ordering and removed stray trailing blank lines. No behaviour change. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Update the safety module's doc comments to point at the current `crate::safety::scan` and `crate::safety::redact_identifiers` paths instead of stale module references, and reword the scoring notes to describe the fixed category weight and co-occurrence bonus. The regex-based detector and redaction helpers are now opt-in via a `local-safety` feature, so the default engine contract stays regex-free while the risk vocabulary remains available by default. Documentation and the safety contract test were updated to reflect the new feature gate. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Review comments at @crates/tinymemory-api/src/safety/rules.rs:
- Around line 107-163: Update the IPv4 pattern in build_rules so the regex
captures the complete dotted numeric sequence, allowing is_ipv4 to reject
invalid sequences rather than matching a valid-looking suffix. Add a regression
test that verifies scanning and redact_identifiers leave a value such as
999.1.2.3.4 unflagged and unchanged.
- Around line 107-163: Update CreditCard match handling in scan and
redact_identifiers so a match is accepted or redacted only when it represents
the complete card candidate, not a prefix continued by a separator and digit.
Apply this boundary check before validation and redaction; leave is_ipv4
unchanged.

The weight method is only used by the local-safety scan, so it is now compiled only when that feature is enabled. This avoids dead-code warnings in builds without the feature. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Expose pure local identification-risk classification and structured redaction through tinymemory-api::safety. This preserves the OpenHuman detector's categories, counts, scoring, co-occurrence bonus, strong-identifier override, validators and replacement text, with its behavioral tests moved beside the owner code.
Memory uses tinymemory-api as its public contract. These helpers resemble its existing pure fingerprint/time-hint helpers: they perform no I/O and link no engine, storage or runtime. Hosts retain warning/blocking policy and write orchestration. The existing integrations safety scrubber remains independent. Regex supports local matching; diagnostics remain host-owned and the API never invokes a global logger; results contain categories/counts, never matched substrings.
Validation: the public API regression first failed with a missing safety module, then passed. The API suite passes 112 unit tests plus the public contract case and doctests. Full workspace formatting, Clippy (--all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings), build (--all-targets --all-features) and tests (--all-features) pass. Rustdoc with warnings denied and final doctests pass after correcting migrated links. Built-in regex compilation follows the existing safety pattern's narrowly documented invariant; fixture tests compile every rule.
Prerequisite for tinyhumansai/openhuman#7418; part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7390. Additive public API, no product behavior change.
The regex detector/redactor is opt-in through local-safety; risk vocabulary remains public by default. Default API Clippy with warnings denied and tests pass, and the existing forbidden-dependency tree guard passes unchanged (no regex/runtime/IO dependency in the default contract). Enabled API and full all-feature workspace gates pass. OpenHuman enables the dependency feature explicitly for its existing redaction caller.
Review correction: a callback-count regression failed with two host logger callbacks, then passed after removing logging from the pure API (log is test-only). Detector return values and redaction remain unchanged. Accepted spec/architecture ownership docs and module test docs now describe the pure optional helper separately from storage-item scrubbing. Inherited matcher limitations are confirmed with synthetic runtime examples and tracked in owner issues260 (grouped IBAN),261 (overlapping phone counts) and262 (card/CVV boundaries); none is claimed fixed by this relocation. Full enabled/default gates and strict docs pass after these changes.
