Summary

Commit reports accept text but cannot include screenshots as evidence. Add optional image attachments to the Report commit dialog and show them in the private reports queue.

Refs #982.

Changes

  • Reuse the image picker, paste, drag and drop, previews, descriptions, and existing validation: up to three JPEG, PNG, or WebP images, 10 MB each.
  • Re-encode images as WebP, remove source metadata, encrypt both files and attachment metadata, and serve them only to the reporter and moderators. Other users, including the reported author, cannot retrieve them.
  • Keep duplicate reports from creating extra uploads. Include submitted evidence references in the reporter's personal export, and delete files when the reporter or the reported author/account thread is deleted.
  • Keep dialog actions reachable when image descriptions expand. Document the user-facing reporting and export behavior.

The single migration adds nullable encrypted attachment metadata to commit_reports. It is required to associate stored images with the report. The reporter and moderators can access attachments; storage paths are hidden from serialization. Account deletion removes the corresponding files and records. Existing retention of reports after a commit is soft-deleted is preserved. No seed data, temporary preview setup, credentials, generated route files, workflow edits, or screenshots are included in the implementation diff. /bug attachment changes are fully reverted.

Validation

Check Local result
php -d memory_limit=-1 vendor/bin/pest --parallel --ci --coverage --exactly=100.0 --passthru-php="'-d' 'memory_limit=-1'" 4,212 passed, 23,582 assertions, 100% coverage. Isolated testing databases; GITHUB_REPOSITORY=dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh matches test mocks.
composer test:type-coverage 100%.
bun run test:unit 31 test files passed.
Composer PHP lint components Pint passes 1,149 files; Rector passes.
composer test:lint Combined command blocked by the container's older Node rejecting --experimental-strip-types. bun run test:lint passes on the host, with existing warnings.
composer test:types Three pre-existing PHPStan errors in unchanged base files: EmbedKnowledgeBaseCommand.php:20,22 and StressSeeder.php:127. Changed PHP files pass static analysis. Host bun run test:types passes.
Architecture / focused checks 12 architecture tests pass; 99 report/export/account-cleanup tests pass; 23 composer/image attachment tests pass.
composer audit --locked --no-interaction No vulnerability advisories; existing abandoned development package symplify/rule-doc-generator-contracts reported.
Diff checks No added-line secret-pattern matches; clean working tree; only the feature migration is added.

These are local results, not a claim that hosted CI has run or will pass. CI targets production; the title follows the scope-free Conventional Commits rule. No workflow permissions, triggers, or dependency lockfiles change.

Visual evidence

Screenshots are hosted on a separate evidence-only fork branch and pinned to its immutable revision; they do not enter the implementation diff. Baseline screenshots use component source from the exact base revision with comparable synthetic local content.

Screen Before After
Report dialog, Chrome/Linux, 1440×900, light Before: text-only report dialog After: report with an attached screenshot
Report dialog, Chrome viewport emulation, 390×844, dark Before: mobile report dialog After: image description and reachable report actions
Synthetic moderation report card, Chrome/Linux, 1440×900, light Before: report details only After: private report evidence

Complete reviewed evidence: 37 screenshots covers 1440×900, 1366×650, and 390×844 in light/dark; empty, attached, description, validation, dismissal/reopen, and moderation states. Supplemental desktop screenshots show a simulated file-reading delay, a paused real local POST, and actual successful submission. Standard CLS was 0 in all 12 before/after comparison groups; no page errors were recorded.

Device verification

The user reports successful testing on a physical iPhone 14 Pro Max with Safari: URL loading, attachment/removal, scrolling with the Details keyboard open, and reaching Send report. The iOS version was not supplied. This hardware result is user-reported, not independently observed; the screenshots above are Chrome viewport emulation rather than phone captures.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the value of this. The reported commit is already immutable, external content can be linked if relevant.

@xHeaven well I think it makes sense, if someone post anything abuse, e.t.c (bad people are everywhere)
and for the first that commit is deleted by admins with the warning. but that person post stuff like that again and someone has screenshots of previous commits so it will be useful.

Plus it'll be useful in more cases such as if someone post a false news, to prove the news false, we can attach screenshots from credible sources along with the links, so it makes sense to have it!

Walkthrough

Commit reports now support up to three image attachments with optional descriptions. Authorized viewers can retrieve attachments, moderators can view them in the report queue, and account exports include the reporter’s reports. User deletion removes associated report image files.

Changes: Commit report image attachments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Create and store report attachments
database/migrations/*, app/Http/Requests/CreateCommitReportRequest.php, app/Actions/CreateCommitReport.php, app/Http/Controllers/CommitReportController.php, app/Models/CommitReport.php, resources/js/components/commit-report-button.tsx, resources/js/components/commit-image-picker.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md, tests/Feature/Controllers/CommitReportControllerTest.php, tests/Unit/ImageAttachments.test.tsx, tests/Unit/StandaloneCommitGraphs.test.tsx
The report form accepts up to three validated images with optional descriptions. Newly created reports store encrypted image files and expose attachment metadata. The form supports picking, pasting, and dropping images, and cleans up preview URLs.
Authorize and display attachments
app/Http/Requests/ShowCommitReportImageRequest.php, app/Http/Controllers/CommitReportImageController.php, app/Queries/ReportedCommitsQuery.php, routes/web.php, resources/js/pages/moderation/reports.tsx, tests/Feature/Controllers/CommitReportControllerTest.php
The image route checks access and image availability before returning decrypted image data. The moderation queue displays report attachments.
Include reports in account exports
app/Actions/CreateExport.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/ExportControllerTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
Account exports include reports filed by that account, with details and attachment references. Reports filed by others remain excluded.
Remove report files during user deletion
app/Actions/DeleteUser.php, tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php
User deletion collects and removes report image files associated with the user as reporter or as author of a reported commit or reply.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 12a58

A file dropped while a report is sending may appear attached briefly but will not be submitted. This is a bounded issue that can be fixed or accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 12a58

Report images have explicit access checks and encryption. However, account deletion can leave private evidence files behind if file removal fails or execution stops after the corresponding records have been deleted.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Account deletion removes report ownership metadata before attempting file deletion. A storage deletion failure or interruption after the database commit can therefore leave encrypted report images without the metadata needed to discover and retry their removal. The deletion mechanism already existed for other media, but this PR extends that failure mode to private report evidence. Encryption limits disclosure; it does not fulfill the attachment-erasure guarantee.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new sensitive assets are report screenshots and their descriptions. Eligible authenticated reporters can submit them for visible, approved commits they do not own, through the existing throttled report route. Cleanup includes reports submitted by the deleted user and reports concerning their commits or deleted root threads.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure path is residual retention, not an established unauthorized-read bypass: a deletion failure or interruption after record removal can strand encrypted files. Recovering their plaintext would still require storage access and suitable application key material. Whether an attacker can deliberately trigger the failure is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Client-supplied images pass server-side type, list-length, size, and dimension validation. The storage helper decodes permitted image formats with GD, scales them, and re-encodes WebP rather than retaining the original uploaded bytes and metadata.
  • observed — Image retrieval checks reporter/admin authority, indexed attachment existence, and storage existence before decryption. Responses specify WebP, sandboxing, nosniff, and private no-store caching. The inspected test checks reporter and moderator access while denying an unrelated user and the reported author.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Normal cleanup is covered by assertions for both reporter and reported-author deletion. However, both web and API deletion entrypoints invoke the action synchronously, and its file list exists only in memory after the database transaction. These paths do not preserve cleanup work for retry after ownership records are gone.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Persist cleanup intent before removing attachment ownership records, make storage deletion retryable and idempotent, and verify recovery with injected storage failures and interruption between database commit and file deletion.

Ignore drops while the report is sending.

If a user drops an image while form.processing is true, the form-level drop handler still adds it to attachment state. The in-flight submission does not include that image, and onSuccess clears it. Keep preventing the browser’s default file-drop action, but do not attach files while the report is sending. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
