docs: name the hosted service CacheKit Cloud and state shipped defaults (LAB-12494) - #711
README "Why cachekit?": a plain @cache with nothing configured caches in process memory (L1) only, with no backend, lock or encryption; the features table describes what a backend and a preset add.
The closed-beta sign-up points at the waitlist on https://dash.cachekit.io instead of https://cachekit.io (README, getting-started, api-reference, backends, configuration), and so does the CachekitIOBackend missing-key error; its unit test asserts the new hint.
docs/getting-started.md: Redis is the recommended production path, not the default; the default is L1 only.
docs/data-flow-architecture.md: @cache(l1=True, l2=None), which raises ConfigurationError, becomes @cache(backend=None).
docs/api-reference.md: @cache(backend=None) is labelled "L1 only".
llms.txt: @cache.secure shows its required key; bare @cache lists its circuit breaker and monitoring; .dev lists its circuit breaker.
Prose across README, docs/ and llms.txt names the hosted service CacheKit Cloud. Release-history notes in the README become current behaviour with one CHANGELOG.md link.
Adds a no-retired-names pre-commit hook next to no-internal-references, with the same files: scope plus llms.txt. It rejects retired names for the hosted service (it is "CacheKit Cloud" in prose; CachekitIO stays a code identifier), the retired tagline, "no backend required", and wrong package targets (cargo add cachekit, npm install cachekit, pip install cachekit-py).
Prose names the hosted service CacheKit Cloud; CachekitIO stays a code
identifier in backticks. A no-retired-names pre-commit hook keeps it so.
Sign-up pointers go to the dashboard waitlist instead of the marketing
site, which has no sign-up, including the missing-API-key error hint.
The README states that a bare @cache caches in L1 only, the getting
started guide no longer calls Redis the default, and llms.txt matches
the presets: bare @cache and @cache.dev run the circuit breaker, and
@cache.secure needs a master key.

Clarified caching and distributed-locking behaviour, backend selection, security, configuration and setup guidance.
Updated documentation to reflect current free-threaded Python wheel availability.
Bug Fixes
Updated missing-key error guidance to direct users to the CacheKit Cloud waitlist.
Chores
Added a pre-commit check for retired product names, naming errors and specified installation-command forms.
Walkthrough
This pull request adds a pre-commit naming check and updates CacheKit Cloud branding across documentation and backend error messages. It clarifies documented cache defaults, distributed-locking conditions, setup details and selected reference material. The backend’s missing-key hint and its unit test now refer to the closed-beta waitlist.

Summary
Naming check and backend hint .pre-commit-config.yaml, src/cachekit/backends/cachekitio/backend.py, tests/unit/backends/test_cachekitio_backend.py
Adds a pre-commit check for retired names and naming patterns. Updates the missing-key hint and test to use the closed-beta waitlist details.
Clarifies L1-only defaults, TTL descriptions and distributed-locking conditions. Updates cloud setup and waitlist details, and selected preset and security examples.
Backend selection and reference pages docs/README.md, docs/backends/*, docs/guides/backend-guide.md, docs/free-threading.md
Updates CacheKit Cloud naming and beta details in backend guides and related references.
Feature and technical references docs/error-codes.md, docs/features/*, docs/performance.md, docs/serializers/*, docs/troubleshooting.md
Updates backend names in feature and technical references. Changes the documented HTTP 413 message format.
The documentation overstates which Prometheus metrics @cache.dev disables; narrow the wording before merging to avoid misleading users about circuit-breaker telemetry.

The architecture diagram still labels the backend CachekitIO. This is prose, not the CachekitIOBackend code identifier. Replace it with CacheKit Cloud to match the new naming rule. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the architecture diagram label in the README to replace the retired prose
name “CachekitIO” with “CacheKit Cloud”; leave code identifiers such as
CachekitIOBackend unchanged.
This section correctly says that bare @cache is L1-only with no connection. The same page still labels bare @cache as Default: 1 hour TTL, requires Redis, and says the prerequisites include REDIS_URL at Lines 68-80. Update that section to describe the L1-only path, and move the Redis instructions under the configured-backend path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @docs/getting-started.md around lines 29 - 30:
Update the getting-started section around the bare `@cache` description to
consistently describe its L1-only, in-process behaviour: remove the Redis
prerequisite and the one-hour TTL claim from that path. Place Redis setup and
requirements under the configured-backend instructions, keeping them specific to
that path.
Make the distributed examples select an L2 backend.

Without a backend or environment selector, @cache runs in L1-only mode. These comments still promise L1+L2 caching, all features, and distributed locking for bare @cache.
Add an explicit backend= or show the required REDIS_URL configuration. Otherwise, change the comments to describe L1-only behaviour.

Review comment at @docs/comparison.md at line 114:
Update both bare @cache examples in the comparison documentation to select a
supported L2 backend explicitly or show the required REDIS_URL configuration;
otherwise, revise their comments to describe L1-only behaviour and remove claims
of distributed locking or all features being enabled.

Narrow the Prometheus description for @cache.dev.
@cache.dev enables the circuit breaker, which exports the circuit_breaker_state Prometheus gauge. Replace no Prometheus with no cache-operation Prometheus metrics.

Update the `@cache.dev` table entry to clarify that it has no cache-operation
Prometheus metrics, while preserving the distinction that it exports the
`circuit_breaker_state` gauge.
