perf(serializers): decode StandardSerializer reads in Rust, bounds and decode in one pass (LAB-12030) - #674
Every StandardSerializer read (the default serializer: L2 reads, L1 hits, and the decrypted plaintext of encrypted reads) now decodes its MessagePack in the Rust extension, in one pass that also enforces the untrusted-decode bounds. It replaces cachekit-core's structure walk followed by msgpack-python's unpackb calling _standard_object_hook once per map.
rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs: unpackb_standard(data, max_depth, object_hook). It is an iterative decoder with an explicit frame stack. At every header it applies the walk's own checks before allocating a container: nesting depth (every array or map header counts, an empty one included), and elements owed against bytes left. On any failure it re-runs check_msgpack_structure and raises the walk's error if the walk refuses the input, so error precedence matches the old path. It calls the hook only on maps holding a str key equal to __datetime__, __date__ or __time__; the hook returns any other map unchanged, since each marker test reads its key with dict.get. Repeated short strings (keys up to 64 bytes, values up to 32) are shared as one object within a decoded value. Ext types, Timestamp (through Timestamp.from_bytes) and ExtraData come from msgpack-python's own classes.
standard_serializer.py / cache_handler.py: every decode calls unpackb_standard; unpackb_bounded stays for AutoSerializer and interop. With the walk inside the decode, nothing is left for a kept L1 entry to skip but retrieve(), so:
the kept entry's hook flag and its per-entry _may_hold_marker scan are deleted (the decoder already skips the hook on maps without a marker key);
WalkedEnvelope is deleted: it now saved only three header comparisons. An entry whose MessagePack is longer than its envelope stays as the envelope in L1. VerifiedMsgpack stays and still skips retrieve().
No new crate.rust/Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock are unchanged; the reader is hand-written, as cachekit-core's walk is.
Parity
For every input the old decode accepts, the new one returns equal objects of the same types. For every input it refuses, it raises the same exception class, and a bound refusal carries the walk's exact Unpack failed: MessagePack document ... message. tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py checks this against unpackb_bounded(..., object_hook=_standard_object_hook) with Hypothesis on three kinds of input: values packed as the serializer packs them; the same with bytes packed as str, which yields invalid UTF-8; and both after random byte edits, truncation and trailing bytes. The values cover datetime/date/time markers at any depth, markers missing their value, user maps that mimic a marker, int and bytes map keys, ext types and Timestamp, NaN, -0.0, float32, 64-bit integers and nesting. Explicit cases cover the reserved marker, every over-claim, the nesting ceiling and duplicate keys. The same file also checks four properties:
the hook runs only on marker maps;
no path leaks a reference;
8 threads can decode one document at once;
payloads that amplify into many objects per byte (N empty maps, N empty arrays, N short strings) peak no higher than before.
The protocol decode-bounds vectors in tests/unit/protocol/test_decode_bounds.py run against unpackb_standard directly as well as through every read path. The nesting-ceiling, empty-innermost, trailing-byte and fixed-width tests run against both decoders.
One deliberate difference: msgpack-python interns str map keys; this decoder does not. Values are equal either way, and interning costs about 500 instructions per distinct key, more than later lookups save.

tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py
Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
MessagePack is decoded in one bounded pass on cache reads, including L1 hits and L2 reads.
Plaintext L1 entries with integrity checking may retain verified MessagePack when it is no larger than the original entry. Later hits still decode it but skip envelope decompression and checksum validation.
Compressed entries remain in their envelope. Encrypted entries retain ciphertext and are decrypted and decoded on each hit.
Updated benchmarks report about half the instruction count for the Rust decode.
Reliability
Decoding enforces nesting and input-size limits, rejects trailing data and restores date and time values.
Walkthrough
The standard serializer now uses a one-pass Rust MessagePack decoder with input and nesting bounds. Eligible plaintext L1 entries can retain verified MessagePack when it is no larger than the original entry. Tests and documentation describe decoder behaviour, L1 retention and hit behaviour.

Summary
Rust decoder and Python export rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs, rust/src/python_bindings.rs, rust/src/lib.rs
Adds a Rust decoder that builds Python objects while enforcing input and nesting bounds. The Python export passes the depth limit and object hook. The hook runs for maps containing a recognised marker key.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Serializer decoding and retained-entry representation src/cachekit/serializers/standard_serializer.py, src/cachekit/serializers/base.py
The standard serializer uses unpackb_standard for reads. VerifiedMsgpack no longer stores a hook flag, and the walked-envelope path is removed.
L1 retention and caller integration src/cachekit/cache_handler.py, src/cachekit/l1_cache.py, src/cachekit/decorators/wrapper.py
L1 retains verified MessagePack when it is no larger than the original entry. Cache and wrapper types now use VerifiedMsgpack; encrypted entries retain ciphertext.
Decoder compatibility and bounds tests tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py, tests/unit/protocol/test_decode_bounds.py, tests/unit/test_standard_serializer.py, tests/unit/conftest.py
Compares the Rust decoder with the reference decoder and tests bounds, malformed inputs, hooks, buffer handling, memory use, reference leaks and concurrent decoding.
L1 retention and hit tests tests/unit/test_l1_verified_msgpack.py, tests/unit/test_single_flight.py
Tests size-based promotion, bounded decoding on hits, encrypted-entry handling, refusal cases and decoding by joined callers.
Decode and retention documentation docs/data-flow-architecture.md, docs/performance.md, README.md
Updates storage and performance descriptions for bounded decoding, marker-hook behaviour and L1 retention.
The change is otherwise mergeable, but the performance guide should clarify that its decoder coverage applies only to serialized reads.

Explanation
The title names the main change: StandardSerializer reads now decode in Rust, with bounds checks and decoding in one pass. The changeset matches this. It adds the Rust unpackb_standard decoder, routes all StandardSerializer decodes through it, and removes WalkedEnvelope and per-entry hook tracking. The title uses the conventional commit format and includes a ticket reference, which is acceptable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has a What section that describes the change, and a Parity section that covers the behaviour checks. It has a Performance section with benchmark tables, a Test runs section, and a Docs section. It gives a clear Motivation through the 'What' and 'Performance' content, but it has no explicit Motivation heading. The Type of Change checklist, Security Checklist, Documentation Validation Checklist, Backward Compatibility and Additional Notes sections are absent. The change touches /rust/ and /src/cachekit/serializers/, which are security-critical paths under the template, and the description does not confirm the security review, unsafe-block justification, or FFI memory-safety checks. The description also does not state whether the public API change (removal of WalkedEnvelope and KeptEntry, and changed VerifiedMsgpack constructor) is backward compatible.
Resolution
Add the missing template sections: an explicit Motivation heading, the Type of Change selection (Performance improvement applies), and the Security Checklist. For this PR, the security checklist must confirm that the security team reviewed the change, that the new Rust code has no unsafe blocks or includes a justification for them, and that the FFI boundary keeps memory safety. Add a Backward Compatibility section. State whether the removal of WalkedEnvelope and KeptEntry and the change to the VerifiedMsgpack constructor affect public APIs, and document any migration path. Complete the Documentation Validation Checklist, because the public API and docs changed, and confirm the Testing checkboxes, including make test-critical. Add any reviewer notes under Additional Notes.

### [1/1] tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py:313
Issue identified during code review:
Swallowed exceptions in the `rust(data)` call in tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py: the broad `except Exception: pass` hides every failure, not just the expected decode errors. When a binding regression makes `rust(data)` raise `TypeError`, the test still passes and the leak measurement runs over paths that fail for the wrong reason. Fix: catch only the expected classes, e.g. `except (ValueError, SerializationError, msgpack.ExtraData, msgpack.UnpackException):`, and let anything else propagate.

Review each issue in context, use the reference implementations as guidance, and apply fixes that are consistent with the surrounding codebase.

decoding fails. Qualify the claim to successful decodes, or note that failures
may trigger an additional structure walk.

…iled decode re-walks
retrieve() checks the envelope and its checksum over the payload bytes; it does not
check MessagePack structure. unpackb_standard is one pass only when the decode succeeds:
a failure re-runs the structure walk so the walk's error wins. Also "since them" -> "since then".

@cache(backend=None) L1-only hits return the object already held in memory. They do not serialise or deserialise MessagePack. The current wording says that every default-serializer read decodes MessagePack and includes L1 hits. This conflicts with the earlier explanation and overstates the Rust decoder's coverage. Scope the sentence to serialized reads, or explicitly exclude object-cache L1-only hits. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

StandardSerializerread (the default serializer: L2 reads, L1 hits, and the decrypted plaintext of encrypted reads) now decodes its MessagePack in the Rust extension, in one pass that also enforces the untrusted-decode bounds. It replaces cachekit-core's structure walk followed by msgpack-python'sunpackbcalling_standard_object_hookonce per map.rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs:unpackb_standard(data, max_depth, object_hook). It is an iterative decoder with an explicit frame stack. On any failure it re-runscheck_msgpack_structureand raises the walk's error if the walk refuses the input, so error precedence matches the old path. It calls the hook only on maps holding astrkey equal to__datetime__,__date__or__time__; the hook returns any other map unchanged, since each marker test reads its key withdict.get. Repeated short strings (keys up to 64 bytes, values up to 32) are shared as one object within a decoded value.
