fix(rust): decode StandardSerializer MessagePack in safe Rust (LAB-12250) - #694
rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs, the one-pass StandardSerializer decode that #674 added, is rewritten in safe PyO3. It held 8 unsafe fn and several unsafe blocks, against SECURITY.md's rule of zero unsafe functions in cachekit-rs, which Security Medium's Unsafe Code Tracking job enforces after a merge. The parser, its bounds and its error precedence are unchanged: the same marker dispatch, the same inline accounting of cachekit-core's walk before any container is allocated, the same re-run of the walk on any failure, the same per-decode string cache and hook rule.
Every object is a PyO3 Bound, so each reference is released by its owner on every exit. The hand-written Drop and the raw pointers are gone.
An array's list is made at its header with None in every slot (n already checked against the bytes left, as before) and filled with set_item, so pre-allocation is exactly what it was.
PyO3's plain constructors panic when CPython returns NULL, and the release profile sets panic = "abort", so an allocation failure there kills the process where the old decode, and msgpack-python, raise MemoryError. Every single allocation the input sizes goes through a constructor that returns PyResult: a list of more than 64 items ([None] * n via PySequence::repeat), the bytes of a bin, an ext or ExtraData's trailing bytes (PyBytes::new_with), and strings (PyString::from_bytes).
Known difference (decided): dicts, lists of up to 64 items, floats and ints outside -5..=256 keep the plain constructors, so a document of many such objects that exhausts memory aborts the process where the old decode raised MemoryError. Safe PyO3 has no fallible constructor for floats or ints. A variant that builds every object fallibly (dict copy(), [None] * n for every list, int(str) and float(str)) passes every parity and bound test, but decodes the 100-user dict at 51.9% of the pre-perf(serializers): decode StandardSerializer reads in Rust, bounds and decode in one pass (LAB-12030) #674 decode instead of 47.3%, and costs the 1 KB decode 2.1%. With Linux's default overcommit the OOM killer usually ends the process before either outcome. docs/performance.md and the module docs state this.
#![forbid(unsafe_code)] on the module, so any build, a PR's included, fails if unsafe code returns there. cargo-geiger runs only after a merge.
rust/Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock are unchanged: no new crate.
Unsafe Code Tracking
Security Medium, dispatched on this branch at 71ef971: run 41276194647, step "Check unsafe in cachekit-rs (must be zero)": cachekit-rs unsafe functions: 6. main reports 9. The 6 left are rust/src/l1_hit.rs's, from #673, which #677 removes; rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs contributes none (grep -n unsafe matches only its forbid attribute). The job stays red until #677 lands.
Tests
New: test_no_decode_keeps_a_reference_to_its_input. The tracemalloc leak gate (renamed test_no_path_leaks_an_object) catches only objects a decode allocates and keeps; a leaked reference to an object that already exists allocates nothing. For every multi-byte case in CASES, 100 decodes each from bytes, memoryview(bytes) and bytearray must leave sys.getrefcount of the input, the memoryview's .obj and _standard_object_hook unchanged, and the bytearray must still resize. It passes on main's decoder and this one. Injected faults confirm it fails on a leaked hook reference, a leaked input reference and an unreleased buffer export. The leak gate's comment and docstrings now say it catches per-call allocations only.
New: test_an_allocation_the_input_sizes_raises_memory_error. A 128 MiB str, bin and ext, 128 MiB of trailing bytes and a 16M-item array each decode under an RLIMIT_AS cap in a subprocess and must raise MemoryError. Against this branch's first commit, which used PyO3's plain constructors, the four non-str shapes abort the process (SIGABRT). Linux GIL builds only: on free-threaded builds mimalloc's reserved arenas absorb the allocation, so the cap never refuses it.
Unchanged and passing: the Hypothesis equality fuzz and explicit cases against unpackb_bounded(..., object_hook=_standard_object_hook), the nesting-ceiling, amplification, thread and leak tests in tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py, and every bound test, the protocol vectors in tests/unit/protocol/test_decode_bounds.py included.
Performance
Decode only (walk included), callgrind main-thread instructions per call, (Ir[hi] − Ir[lo]) / (hi − lo), CPython 3.14, one session:
Against main, the safe decode costs 0.1% to 0.5%. On the abi3t extension CPython 3.15 loads, the 100-user dict decodes in 1,250,262 against 2,549,568 before #674 (49.0%). docs/performance.md carries these figures.
Instruction budget against main, from two runs: CI's at 3d045a2 on CPython 3.12 (run 41306496572), and a local make perf-ir --base main at 33823bc on CPython 3.14. The decoder is the same in both commits; only names and comments changed after 33823bc.

The Instruction budget check fails on CPython 3.12: serializer_default and serializer_default_records rise by 1% or more. On 3.14 every path stays under 1% and the gate passes. Every rise is on a path that decodes MessagePack, and it is the cost of the safe decode. Every path that does not decode is unchanged. Why the cost is higher on 3.12 than on 3.14 has not been profiled.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of oversized MessagePack inputs, which now report memory allocation failures rather than relying on unchecked allocations.
Repeated decoding no longer retains references to input data or hooks.
Documentation
Updated documented decode performance figures, including reported reductions of up to 52.7% for the default serializer on CPython 3.14.
Walkthrough
The standard MessagePack decoder now uses PyO3 bound objects instead of raw pointers and manual reference counting. Input-sized allocations use fallible constructors. Tests cover allocation errors, reference counts and buffer release. The documented performance figures have been updated.
Decoder state, entry-point wiring, marker dispatch, scalar accounting and strict map-key handling now use PyO3 bound objects.
Value construction and allocation handling rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs
String caching, numeric and extension decoding, and container construction use PyO3 APIs. Input-sized byte and list allocations propagate Python allocation errors.
Allocation and reference tests tests/unit/test_standard_decode.py, docs/performance.md
Tests check allocation errors under configured process limits, reference counts and buffer release. The performance documentation reports revised decode instruction counts.
Fix the small-container allocation path before merging: memory pressure can now terminate decoding instead of raising MemoryError. Also ensure the allocation test runs against this checkout.

What
rust/src/msgpack_decode.rs, the one-passStandardSerializerdecode that #674 added, is rewritten in safe PyO3. It held 8unsafe fnand severalunsafeblocks, againstSECURITY.md's rule of zero unsafe functions in cachekit-rs, which Security Medium's Unsafe Code Tracking job enforces after a merge. The parser, its bounds and its error precedence are unchanged: the same marker dispatch, the same inline accounting of cachekit-core's walk before any container is allocated, the same re-run of the walk on any failure, the same per-decode string cache and hook rule.Bound, so each reference is released by its owner on every exit. The hand-writtenDropand the raw pointers are gone.Nonein every slot (n already checked against the bytes left, as before) and filled withset_item, so pre-allocation is exactly what it was.panic = "abort", so an allocation failure there kills the process where the old decode, and msgpack-python, raiseMemoryError. Every single allocation the input sizes goes through a constructor that returnsPyResult: a list of more than 64 items ([None] * nviaPySequence::repeat), the bytes of a bin, an ext orExtraData's trailing bytes (PyBytes::new_with), and strings (PyString::from_bytes).MemoryError. Safe PyO3 has no fallible constructor for floats or ints. A variant that builds every object fallibly (dictcopy(),[None] * nfor every list, int(str)andfloat(str)) passes every parity and bound test, but decodes the 100-user dict at 51.9% of the pre-perf(serializers): decode StandardSerializer reads in Rust, bounds and decode in one pass (LAB-12030) #674 decode instead of 47.3%, and costs the 1 KB decode 2.1%. With Linux's default overcommit the OOM killer usually ends the process before either outcome.docs/performance.mdand the module docs state this.#![forbid(unsafe_code)]on the module, so any build, a PR's included, fails if unsafe code returns there. cargo-geiger runs only after a merge.rust/Cargo.tomlandCargo.lockare unchanged: no new crate.Unsafe Code Tracking
