perf(l1): keep verified MessagePack in L1 after an entry's first hit (LAB-7116) - #662
On a non-encrypted backed cache, every L1 hit ran ByteStorage.retrieve() again on an envelope this process had already written or verified: LZ4 decompress, xxHash3-64 check and a copy. The first L1 hit on an entry still does that, but now it keeps the MessagePack that retrieve() returned. If that MessagePack is no longer than the envelope, L1 holds it in the entry's place from then on, and later hits decode it directly. That holds for small values and for incompressible ones. Compressible values are longer as MessagePack, so they keep their envelope and decode as before.
Scope: the built-in StandardSerializer (serializer="default" / "std") with integrity checking on and no encryption. That is the default @cache, .production and .io. Encrypted caches (@cache.secure, encryption=True), interop mode, integrity-off configs and the other serializers are unchanged.
How
CacheSerializationHandler.deserialize_l1() decodes an L1 entry. For this handler's own plaintext envelope it calls StandardSerializer.deserialize_keeping_msgpack(), which runs the same retrieve() and decode as deserialize() and also returns the verified MessagePack when it is no longer than the envelope. Every other entry goes to deserialize_data() as before.
The hit site then calls L1Cache.shrink_if_held(key, held, smaller). It swaps the entry only while the entry still holds the very object the hit read, and only if the new value is no longer. The entry keeps its expiry and its LRU place. An entry that was invalidated or stored again since the read is left alone, so a swap never undoes an invalidation.
VerifiedMsgpack marks a swapped entry by its type, not its bytes. No backend returns that type, so bytes read from L2 never take the decode that skips retrieve(). It holds retrieve()'s own bytes object, so a swap copies nothing. L1Cache.put() still accepts bytes only.
The decorator picks the L1 decode once, when it decorates the function. A handler that cannot swap (encrypted, interop, integrity off, another serializer) decodes its L1 hits through deserialize_data() exactly as before. If such a handler shares a namespace and key with one that did swap, the swapped entry fails its frame check and is dropped from L1, as a corrupt entry is today.
For such a handler, a joined single-flight caller decodes through deserialize_l1() too (without swapping), so the sync flight's re-check (_peek_l1 → _decode_shared) decodes a swapped entry without its own trip. A joiner of a trip still decodes its own copy of the trip's envelope.
Why swap on the first hit and not when writing. Writes and backfills store envelopes exactly as before. So L1 admits, evicts and sizes entries on the envelope's length, as it does today, and a swap only ever shrinks an entry. L1 therefore never holds fewer entries than it would hold envelopes. A property test below checks that no access trace loses an L1 hit. The first build of this change stored the MessagePack at write time instead. That needed a second unwrap and retrieve() on every L1 write, so an L1-on miss cost about 32% more instructions whether or not the entry was ever read again. Swapping on the first hit costs nothing for entries that are never read.
Measurements
Instructions per backed, non-encrypted L1 hit. Main thread only, using tests/performance/ir_budget.py's method: per-op from two loop sizes, median of its 5 heap layouts. Both arms ran the same workload file, the main arm under a main checkout's own environment, because ir_budget.py --base skips a path the base lacks. The values are bytes, either random (incompressible) or address-like text (compressible). CPython 3.14.3. The 64 B random, 1 KB and 64 KB random rows are re-measured at this PR's head; the other PR figures are from the commit before the last refactor, which did not touch the swapped-hit path.

At 64 B and 1 KB the saving is larger than the retrieve() call alone, because a swapped entry also skips parsing the envelope's frame header.
The first hit of an entry that gets swapped costs 5,850-6,330 more instructions at 64 B and 1 KB (+1.6% to +1.8% of a miss plus its first hit), for the swap itself, and 5,650 (+0.5%) at 64 KB random. A first hit that keeps the envelope (1 KB text) costs +0.5%. Every later hit on a swapped entry saves the figures above.
Misses with L1 on (each call a new key): within +0.2% of main at 64 B, 1 KB and 64 KB, random and text.
The instruction-count gate (ir_budget.py --base at main): secure_l1_hit +0.11% and l2_hit +0.05% at this head; miss +0.27%, l1_hit and minimal_l1_hit -0.07%, l2_hit_async_metrics +0.01%. All serializer and byte_storage paths are between -0.36% and +0.50%. All pass. The Arrow, USGS, file_set and object_cache_put_full paths were not run locally. This change does not touch their code, and CI runs them.
Wall clock. Interleaved in one run, with main, main again as the A/A arm, and this PR as fresh processes in shuffled order, 12 rounds per case. It was run under the default allocator, and again with MALLOC_MMAP_THRESHOLD_=4194304 and MALLOC_TRIM_THRESHOLD_=16777216 on every arm. Where L1 holds MessagePack, the median hit was faster in both runs: by 23.7-26.4% at 64 B and 1 KB, 68.9-69.3% at 64 KB and 83.5-83.8% at 1 MB, while the A/A arms differed by at most 4.2%. So the sign agrees with the instruction counts. Where the envelope is kept, no wall-clock change is claimed: the two runs disagree in sign at 64 KB (-6.1%, +0.1%) and 1 MB (-0.3%, +0.6%), 1 KB text read +1.3% and +1.7%, and the A/A spread in those cases was up to 2.2%. Their instruction counts are within ±0.75%.
Tests
tests/unit/test_l1_verified_msgpack.py:
What L1 holds: an envelope after a miss and after an L2 backfill, and the swapped MessagePack after the first hit, for str, int, dict and random bytes. A compressible value keeps its envelope. An envelope over L1's per-entry cap (an eighth of the budget) stays out even when its MessagePack would fit.
A corrupt envelope backfilled into L1 (with the L2 decode stubbed to accept it) is never swapped: the next hit's retrieve() refuses it and L1 drops it. deserialize_l1() raises for a flipped byte and for a truncated envelope.
A Hypothesis property over arbitrary MessagePack-able values: deserialize_l1() keeps MessagePack only when it is no longer than the envelope, and it decodes to the same value.
A parity test: deserialize_l1() decodes or refuses every kind of entry (own envelope, another serializer's, an encrypted config-drift entry, integrity off, a corrupt header or payload, bare MessagePack) exactly as deserialize_data() does.
Encrypted handlers (@cache.secure, @cache.secure(serializer="default") and encryption=True) hold the very ciphertext L2 got, after misses, hits and backfills, and every L1 hit decrypts. An encrypted reader refuses a swapped entry planted under its key, as a corrupt frame, and serves from L2.
L1Cache.shrink_if_held(): shrinks in place, keeping expiry and LRU place. It leaves alone an entry removed since the read, an entry stored again since the read (equal bytes, another object), and a longer replacement.
L1 hits never fall. A Hypothesis property replays access traces over the real L1Cache at the 1 MiB minimum budget and at the 100 MiB default. Traces hold keys that together fill L1, keys of any size, and keys whose envelope and MessagePack straddle the per-entry cap in each direction, with reads, rewrites and value changes. Every read that hits with envelopes alone still hits with the swap. Two pinned traces show that write-time rules fail this property. 104 keys cycling through 100 MiB, each growing from 1,000,000 B to 1,040,000 B as MessagePack, lose all 208 hits under a 1.1× growth allowance. An entry shrinking from 131,080 B to 131,000 B under 1 MiB, if admitted on the shorter size, costs a hot set all 20 of its hits. The swap keeps both at the envelope-only count. Each rejected rule, and a swap that may grow an entry, fails the random property in every run tried.
tests/unit/test_single_flight.py: the sync flight's re-check decodes a swapped entry with one function call and one backend read across both callers. Herd joiners each still decode their own copy of the trip's envelope.
Existing tests that poison the L1 decode now poison deserialize_l1(), which is what the L1 hit sites call for this cache.
Locally on CPython 3.14.3: pytest tests/unit tests/integration tests/critical tests/docs -m "not slow" gives 7,371 passed and 91 skipped. Doctests and --markdown-docs pass. ruff check, ruff format --check and basedpyright report 0 errors.
Docs
docs/data-flow-architecture.md (architecture principles, the L1 put step, storage architecture, read path), docs/performance.md (key numbers and the L1-hit section: the 100-user dict compresses, so its figures are unchanged) and docs/features/prometheus-metrics.md (an L1 get's size_bytes is the L1 entry's length, smaller after a swap).
…lizer caches
An L1 hit on a non-encrypted backed cache re-ran ByteStorage.retrieve on bytes this
process had already written or verified. L1 now holds the MessagePack a successful
retrieve returned, in place of the envelope, when it is no longer and L1 admits the
envelope; the hit decodes it without the LZ4 decompress and checksum. Admission is
still judged on the envelope, so L1 never holds fewer entries. Encrypted caches keep
their ciphertext envelope in L1.
Storing MessagePack at write time cost every L1 write a second unwrap and retrieve,
about a third of an in-process miss, whether or not the entry was ever read again.
The first L1 hit already runs retrieve; it now keeps that MessagePack and swaps it
into the entry in place, only when it is no longer, and only if the entry still
holds the object the hit read. Writes and backfills store envelopes exactly as
before, so admission and eviction never see a shorter form.
Copying retrieve()'s bytes into a bytes subclass zeroed and copied the whole payload on
every swap: about 200K instructions on a 64 KB value's first hit. VerifiedMsgpack now
holds retrieve()'s own bytes object and reports its length, so a swap copies nothing.
L1Cache.put still takes bytes only; replace() is the one way the wrapper enters L1.
Routing every L1 hit through deserialize_l1 cost an encrypted cache's hit a call frame
and a tuple it never uses: +0.57% instructions on the secure L1 hit. The wrapper now
picks the decode once per decoration; only a handler whose hits can swap in verified
MessagePack takes deserialize_l1. deserialize_data no longer checks for the wrapper
type, so L2 reads are as before.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
For plaintext caches using the default serializer with integrity checking enabled, an L1 entry may be replaced after its first hit with a verified MessagePack representation when it is no larger than the original. Later hits can avoid repeated decompression and integrity checks.
Encrypted entries retain their existing representation. Custom serializers and values read from L2 do not use this replacement behaviour.
Cache size metrics reflect the bytes read or written, so later L1 hits may report a smaller size.
Documentation
Updated architecture, metrics and performance guides to describe this behaviour and its limitations.
Walkthrough
Eligible plaintext L1 entries may replace their envelopes with verified MessagePack after a hit when the payload is no larger than the envelope. Wrapper decode paths and L1 cache accounting support the replacement. Tests and documentation cover eligibility, exclusions, cache behaviour, and shared-flight decoding.
The standard serializer adds verified MessagePack values and decoding methods. The cache handler enables retention only for unencrypted built-in standard serializers with integrity checking. Tests cover eligibility and decoding. The secrets baseline updates its recorded line and timestamp.
The wrapper uses the eligible decode path for sync and async L1 hits. The L1 cache replaces an entry only if it still holds the read value and the replacement is no larger. Tests and documentation cover promotion, sizing, encrypted entries, cache state, and reported payload sizes.
Shared-flight decode and recheck src/cachekit/decorators/wrapper.py, tests/unit/test_single_flight.py
Shared-flight decoding accepts byte envelopes or verified MessagePack. Tests cover a settled-flight L1 recheck and per-caller decoding of a shared envelope.

A handler that cannot keep MessagePack in L1 now decodes every L1 entry, the flight
re-check's included, through deserialize_data, which refuses another handler's swapped
entry as a corrupt frame. The capability flag is keeps_msgpack_in_l1, and the swap is
L1Cache.shrink_if_held, which reports whether it swapped. A parity test pins that
deserialize_l1 decodes or refuses every kind of entry as deserialize_data does. The
hit-count replay now leaves the no-grow check to shrink_if_held itself.

…ate test settings
An encrypted handler that met a plaintext handler's swapped L1 entry under the same key
refused it as corruption; it now raises SuspiciousCacheEntryError, as the plaintext
envelope it replaced would. deserialize_l1 is flattened into guard clauses and takes
only what L1 holds, and the serializer helpers it calls are private. The new tests
build their handlers inside each test with no CACHEKIT_* variable in reach, pin the
compressed-header check and the as-long boundary, and the hit-count replay asserts that
a swap never grows an entry.

Summary
On a non-encrypted backed cache, every L1 hit ran
ByteStorage.retrieve()again on an envelope this process had already written or verified: LZ4 decompress, xxHash3-64 check and a copy. The first L1 hit on an entry still does that, but now it keeps the MessagePack thatretrieve()returned. If that MessagePack is no longer than the envelope, L1 holds it in the entry's place from then on, and later hits decode it directly. That holds for small values and for incompressible ones. Compressible values are longer as MessagePack, so they keep their envelope and decode as before.Scope: the built-in
StandardSerializer(serializer="default"/"std") with integrity checking on and no encryption. That is the default@cache,.productionand.io. Encrypted caches (@cache.secure,encryption=True), interop mode, integrity-off configs and the other serializers are unchanged. How
CacheSerializationHandler.deserialize_l1()decodes an L1 entry. For this handler's own plaintext envelope it callsStandardSerializer.deserialize_keeping_msgpack(), which runs the sameretrieve()and decode asdeserialize()and also returns the verified MessagePack when it is no longer than the envelope. Every other entry goes todeserialize_data()as before.L1Cache.shrink_if_held(key, held, smaller). It swaps the entry only while the entry still holds the very object the hit read, and only if the new value is no longer. The entry keeps its expiry and its LRU place. An entry that was invalidated or stored again since the read is left alone, so a swap never undoes an invalidation.VerifiedMsgpackmarks a swapped entry by its type, not its bytes. No backend returns that type, so bytes read from L2 never take the decode that skipsretrieve(). It holdsretrieve()'s own bytes object, so a swap copies nothing.L1Cache.put()still acceptsbytesonly.deserialize_data()exactly as before. If such a handler shares a namespace and key with one that did swap, the swapped entry fails its frame check and is dropped from L1, as a corrupt entry is today.deserialize_l1()too (without swapping), so the sync flight's re-check (_peek_l1→_decode_shared) decodes a swapped entry without its own trip. That needed a second unwrap and
retrieve()on every L1 write, so an L1-on miss cost about 32% more instructions whether or not the entry was ever read again. Swapping on the first hit costs nothing for entries that are never read.Measurements

All serializer andbyte_storagepaths are between -0.36% and +0.50%. All pass. The Arrow, USGS,file_setandobject_cache_put_fullpaths were not run locally. This change does not touch their code, and CI runs them.Wall clock. Interleaved in one run, with
main, mainagain as the A/A arm, and this PR as fresh processes in shuffled order, 12 rounds per case. It was run under the default allocator, and again withMALLOC_MMAP_THRESHOLD_=4194304andMALLOC_TRIM_THRESHOLD_=16777216on every arm. Their instruction counts are within ±0.75%.Tests
tests/unit/test_l1_verified_msgpack.py:retrieve()refuses it and L1 drops it.deserialize_l1()raises for a flipped byte and for a truncated envelope.deserialize_l1()keeps MessagePack only when it is no longer than the envelope, and it decodes to the same value.deserialize_l1()decodes or refuses every kind of entry (own envelope, another serializer's, an encrypted config-drift entry, integrity off, a corrupt header or payload, bare MessagePack) exactly asdeserialize_data()does.@cache.secure,@cache.secure(serializer="default")andencryption=True) hold the very ciphertext L2 got, after misses, hits and backfills, and every L1 hit decrypts. An encrypted reader refuses a swapped entry planted under its key, as a corrupt frame, and serves from L2.L1Cache.shrink_if_held(): shrinks in place, keeping expiry and LRU place. It leaves alone an entry removed since the read, an entry stored again since the read (equal bytes, another object), and a longer replacement.L1Cacheat the 1 MiB minimum budget and at the 100 MiB default. Each rejected rule, and a swap that may grow an entry, fails the random property in every run tried.tests/unit/test_single_flight.py: the sync flight's re-check decodes a swapped entry with one function call and one backend read across both callers. Herd joiners each still decode their own copy of the trip's envelope.Existing tests that poison the L1 decode now poison
deserialize_l1(), which is what the L1 hit sites call for this cache.Locally on CPython 3.14.3:
