fix(browser): caller systemMetricsSampler no longer duplicates producer-owned traces - #155
A caller systemMetricsSampler replaces the sensor producers, but battery/url/route/view/capture producers keep running, so sampler rows under those names produced two writers. Rule (one writer per name): the producers that still run own their names; launch drops sampler rows for them (battery, charging, battery_charging_time_s, battery_discharging_time_s, route, view, url when URL capture is on, capture when replay is on). All other sampler rows pass through. Docs (system-traces-expansion §14.5) updated.
Tests: duplicate-name test, url-allowed-when-capture-off, capture row with/without replay; each owned name mutation-checked. Browser coverage 100% line, 98.68% branch.
Known sibling, not in this PR: packages/webview/src/launch.ts (launchWithSeams) passes the sampler unfiltered with the same sensors: false producers.
Review of PR #155: caller systemMetricsSampler no longer duplicates producer-owned traces
I found no blocking bugs. I read the diff alongside buildLaunch, createBrowserSystemTraceProducers, createSystemTracesProvider and the Screen/Url/CaptureState producers. I did not run the test suite or any other tooling.
Checks that held up
Owned-name set matches the producers that actually run. With sensors: false, createBrowserSystemTraceProducers returns [battery, ...url, ...screen] (trace-producers.ts:760). The battery producer writes battery, charging and the two battery-time traces (trace-producers.ts:76-83). ScreenProducer writes route and view (screen-producer.ts:24-30), and UrlProducer writes url (url-producer.ts:78). CaptureStateProducer writes capture (capture-state-producer.ts:93).
Conditions are in sync.captureUrl is computed once and is the same value that gates withUrl(...). captureState !== undefined is the same condition that pushes the capture producer into producers. So a name is dropped exactly when its producer is present. The url-when-capture-off and capture-with/without-replay tests cover both sides.
No change to the sampler's error path.#emitLegacy calls sample() inside the provider's timer try/catch. A throwing or malformed sampler fails the same way it did before. Wrapping it in .filter doesn't add a new failure mode.
Interaction with host suppression is fine.#record still consults the live TraceSuppression, so names that a WebView or Electron host owns stay suppressed as before. Dropping sampler rows earlier doesn't conflict with that.
P3, informational (not blocking)
Silent drop. A caller whose sampler emits battery, url and so on gets no signal that those rows are discarded; only the JSDoc and design doc mention it. This is arguably correct for a legacy override. If you want it discoverable, a one-time onError or console warning on the first dropped row would help, but it isn't needed for correctness.
Sibling bug stays open. As the PR notes, packages/webview/src/launch.ts:756 still passes options.systemMetricsSampler unfiltered while using the same sensors: false producers, so the same duplicate-writer problem remains there. Please make sure a follow-up issue exists. Since producerOwnedNames and withoutNames now sit in the browser package, moving them to a shared place such as @bugsee/capture would let webview reuse them.
Long comment lines. The new JSDoc line on systemMetricsSampler (launch.ts ~571) and the in-body comment in buildLaunch are very long compared with the surrounding code. Wrapping them is cosmetic only.
Summary
Overall risk: Low.
Merge recommendation: Approve, as long as the webview sibling is tracked.
Most important items: open or confirm a follow-up for the @bugsee/webview sampler path, and optionally add a warning for dropped rows.
Positives:
The one-writer-per-name rule is applied with a small, well-scoped change.
The names come from the TraceName constants, not string literals.
The tests cover each owned name, and both the on and off conditions for url and capture.
The design doc is updated and no longer carries stale line numbers.
Prevented custom system-metrics samples from duplicating battery, charging, battery-timing, route, and view traces already supplied by built-in producers.
URL and capture samples are filtered when their respective built-in producers are enabled, but remain available from the sampler when those producers are disabled.
Documentation
Clarified that sampler rows using names owned by active built-in producers are dropped.
Browser launch now filters caller-supplied system-metrics samples to remove trace names owned by active built-in producers. URL and capture rows are filtered only when their respective producers are enabled. Tests cover filtered and retained rows, and the design record reflects the behavior.

bugsee/bugsee-javascript#134: Adds the route and view producers whose trace names this change filters from sampler rows.
bugsee/bugsee-javascript#132: Adds provider-level suppression; this change adds launch-level suppression for producer-owned sampler rows.
The ownership filter is mergeable with a small test follow-up: assert that replay still produces its capture trace, not only that the sampler trace disappears.

Explanation
The title names the fix in the browser package: a caller-supplied systemMetricsSampler no longer duplicates traces owned by built-in producers. The changeset matches this. launch.ts filters sampler rows for producer-owned names (battery, charging, battery-duration, route, view, and URL/capture when enabled), and the tests and docs cover the same behavior. The title is specific and concise, and it names the scope (browser) and the outcome.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is closely related to the changeset. It states the problem (a caller systemMetricsSampler producing duplicate writers for battery, url, route, view, and capture names), the rule (drop sampler rows for producer-owned names), the affected names, the docs update to system-traces-expansion §14.5, the tests added, and a known sibling issue in packages/webview/src/launch.ts that is out of scope. It references Fixes #154.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #154 requires one writer for caller-supplied battery and charging rows and automated coverage. packages/browser/src/launch.ts filters sampler rows for producer-owned names. The built-in battery producer keeps ownership. packages/browser/src/launch.test.ts verifies one battery row, one charging row, and drops the sampler timing rows. The test also verifies that unrelated sampler rows remain.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within the sampler one-writer rule from issue #154. The added filtering for battery timing, route, view, conditional URL, and conditional capture names covers the same duplicate-writer condition. The tests and the §14.5 documentation directly support this behavior. The known WebView sibling is documented as outside this pull request and is not required by issue #154.

The replay-enabled case checks only that sampler-capture is absent. Since CaptureStateProducer emits its state only after recorder startup, an empty trace stream can satisfy this assertion. Add an assertion for the producer-origin capture row.

Post findings
This is a read-only review. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck. I made no commits.
Earlier findings: my previous review had no blockers. Its three P3 notes are unchanged: the silent drop, the webview sibling, and the long comment lines. I don't repeat them below, except that the webview sibling still needs a tracking issue.
New since the last review
P3, test strength (inline at packages/browser/src/launch.test.ts:3980): this is the CodeRabbit nit, and it holds. With replay on, the test only asserts that sampler-capture is absent. The producer's own capture row appears only after a real recorder exists (launch.ts:1276-1278). So the assertion is weaker than it looks, but the two it.each cases together still catch a wrong withCapture flag.
Checked and found fine
route/view always dropped:screenTrackerFor always returns a tracker, so routeViewState is always defined. ScreenProducer always exists on this path, and dropping ROUTE/VIEW unconditionally is correct.
url and capture conditions:url is dropped only when captureUrl is true, the same flag that gates withUrl(...). capture is dropped only when captureState !== undefined, the same condition that adds the producer. A name is dropped exactly when its writer is running.
Electron e2e edit: switching the sampler-only row from battery to app_state is necessary and correct. The renderer's own battery producer now owns battery, and app_state is a sensor trace that sensors: false removes.
Other users of the override: the umbrella and the Electron renderer go through browser launch, so they get the fix. Node's systemMetricsSampler path is unaffected, since it has no producers writing these names.
Summary
Overall risk: Low.
Merge recommendation: Approve, provided a follow-up issue exists for packages/webview/src/launch.ts:754. That path still passes the sampler unfiltered alongside the same sensors: false producers, so the duplicate-writer bug remains there.
Most important items:
Track the webview sibling.
Optionally strengthen the replay-on capture assertion.
Positives:
The rule is applied through a small helper keyed on TraceName constants, not string literals.
The owned-name set derives from the same flags that decide which producers run, so the two can't drift apart.
The docs are updated and no longer carry stale line numbers.

Re the P3/nitpick on the capture-row test (launch.test.ts): the assertion is not vacuous. Hard-coding withCapture=false makes the replay=default case leak sampler-capture and fail; I verified it by mutation (removing the CAPTURE entry fails exactly that case). Asserting a producer-written capture value would need an un-mocked recorder, which is out of scope here. No change.
…ery/charging
The battery producer owns battery/charging; sampler rows under those names are dropped (one writer per name).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
This was a read-only review. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and I pushed no commits.
Earlier findings
Capture-row test strength (CodeRabbit nit and my earlier P3): fixed in fa53842b. For replay: undefined the test now mocks a real recorder, waits for registerReplay, and asserts that the producer's own capture row with state: 'active' is present. The caller's sampler-capture row is asserted absent. The previous "the stream can be empty" gap is closed.
Silent drop and long comment lines: unchanged. These are cosmetic or optional, and I don't repeat them.
New finding (inline at packages/browser/src/launch.ts:679)
P3, duplicated helper: the local withoutNames has the same signature and body as withoutTraceNames, which fix(webview): drop caller sampler rows under producer-owned trace names #160 added to @bugsee/capture (system-traces-provider.ts:18, exported at index.ts:70). The browser file already imports from @bugsee/capture, so the PR can reuse it. Otherwise two copies of the one-writer rule can drift apart. This isn't a runtime bug.
Checked and still fine
The owned-name set tracks the producers that actually run. url is dropped only when captureUrl is true, the flag that gates withUrl. capture is dropped only when captureState !== undefined. route and view are always dropped because the screen producer always exists on this path.
The Electron e2e switch from battery to app_state is correct. The renderer's own producer now owns battery, and app_state is a sensor trace removed by sensors: false.
Summary
Overall risk: Low.
Merge recommendation: Approve. Optionally swap in the shared withoutTraceNames first.
Most important item: replace the local withoutNames with the @bugsee/capture export.
Positives:
The change is small and keyed on TraceName constants, not literals.
The owned-name set derives from the same flags that decide which producers run.
Each owned name has a mutation-checked test, and the capture test now proves the producer's row survives.
This was a read-only review. I read the diff against origin/main, withoutTraceNames in @bugsee/capture and the doc text. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and I pushed no commits.
Earlier findings
Duplicated helper (my last P3): fixed in d1e55f8f. The local withoutNames is gone. launch.ts imports withoutTraceNames from @bugsee/capture, the same helper the webview path uses. producerOwnedNames stays local, which is right because browser owns capture and webview doesn't.
Capture-row test strength: fixed in fa53842b, as noted in my previous review.
Silent drop and long comment lines: unchanged. They are optional and I don't repeat them.
New finding
P3, stale doc reference (inline at docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md:504): the doc still names withoutNames, which d1e55f8f deleted. The filter is now withoutTraceNames in @bugsee/capture. This is documentation only, not a runtime issue.
Checked and still fine
The captureUrl variable is hoisted and now feeds both the url ownership set and the withUrl(...) gate. The two can't disagree.
The capture name is dropped only when captureState !== undefined, the same condition that adds that producer.
The Electron e2e edit from battery to app_state is still correct.
Summary
Overall risk: Low.
Merge recommendation: Approve. Fix the one-line doc reference first if you want the docs exact.
Most important item: update the withoutNames mention in system-traces-expansion.md §14.5.
Positives:
The one-writer filter now lives in one place, @bugsee/capture, shared by browser and webview.
Each owned name has a mutation-checked test.
The change keeps the same small, TraceName-keyed shape.

Fixes #154
A caller
systemMetricsSamplerreplaces the sensor producers, but battery/url/route/view/capture producers keep running, so sampler rows under those names produced two writers. Rule (one writer per name): the producers that still run own their names;launchdrops sampler rows for them (battery, charging, battery_charging_time_s, battery_discharging_time_s, route, view, url when URL capture is on, capture when replay is on). All other sampler rows pass through.
