Summary

Phase 4a of PLAN.md: the first public API of the 7.x rewrite: options, launch, stop and status.

Stacked on PR #8 (feat/phase-3c-report-handlers, which sits on #3-#7). The base must be retargeted to nextgen after #3-#8 merge. GitHub Actions was blocked by billing when this was written, so everything below was verified locally.

Public API (lib/bugsee_flutter.dart)

  • Bugsee.launch(token, {options}) returns LaunchResult (launched, alreadyRunning, deferred); stop(); status; statusChanges; getStatus(); isLaunched(); waitUntilLaunched({timeout}); getLaunchOptions(); getHostLaunchOptions().
  • BugseeOptions: 100 typed, documented fields (named after the key: capture.video.frame-rate is captureVideoFrameRate), endpoint, and custom for options without a field. Enums carry the SDK's internal value, never an ordinal.
  • LaunchFailure, BugseeException, BugseeLaunchException, BugseeStatus, the option enums and ReportSeverity.
  • The report-handler and secure-region APIs stay internal (4b). Clean break from 9.x; the facade is isolated in lib/src/bugsee.dart and bugsee_runtime.dart so a compat layer could sit beside it.

Option inventory

Both SDKs now publish an immutable options manifest per release (the options spec still says "Proposed"). They are vendored verbatim in test/fixtures/option_manifests/ and are byte-identical to download.bugsee.com/sdk/options/{android/7.4.2,ios/7.0.0-beta7}.json. A source cross-check (scripts/verify_option_manifests.dart, local only: the SDK repos are private) agrees on keys, hidden keys and enum values for Android v7.4.2 and iOS origin/nextgen@0581aa02c.

Android 7.4.2 iOS 7.0.0-beta7
options 87 (84 public + 3 hidden) 70 (69 public + 1 hidden)
shared 49 (including hidden $$ENDPOINT) 49
platform-only 38 (including hidden $$DEBUG, $$WRAPPER) 21
  • Modules. Android bugsee-android 81, -ndk 2, -leak 4 (not bundled, so no typed field); iOS Bugsee 70.
  • Deprecated. The one deprecated option, capture.webview.domain-allowlist, is a documented no-op in the SDK source. It has no typed field but is reachable through custom, which warns.
  • Default differences. The shared keys differ in default on exactly two (listed in the parity test, so a new difference fails until reviewed):
    • capture.video.adaptive: Android false, iOS true.
    • config.max-data-size: Android 150, iOS 50.
  • Enum differences. FrameRate.raw is Android only. Severity value 1 is VeryLow on Android and Low on iOS.
  • Generation. scripts/generate_options.dart writes the registry and BugseeOptions; --check runs offline in the new options-codegen CI job. sync_option_manifests.dart --check refetches the manifests weekly in native-pins.yml.

Behaviour per platform

  • One flat map. One com.bugsee.option.* map goes to both platforms. An option or enum constant the other platform lacks is skipped with a debug warning.
  • Strictness. An unknown key, a hidden key, a wrong type, a value neither SDK has or a bad endpoint is an ArgumentError before native is touched. Both SDKs drop all of these silently.
  • Android enums. The Android map path takes an enum as the constant or its name and drops a number (OptionDescriptor.resolveEnumConstant). The plugin converts the internal value through each enum's own factory, never values()[n]; an unknown value is left out. iOS takes the numbers as they are. A custom enum name is mapped to its number in Dart, because iOS KVC would read a string as 0.
  • Launch reads the status first.
    • Android auto-init (BugseeInitProvider.autoLaunch) launches before Application.onCreate when the manifest has com.bugsee.app-token, unless com.bugsee.auto-init is false. A later Bugsee.launch early-returns "success" and drops its options (BugseeInternal.launchOnce), and the callback cannot tell it from a real launch. So launching/launched is answered alreadyRunning without calling the SDK.
    • iOS has no auto-init, but a native launch or a second launch is dropped the same way (Bugsee.m ~331).
    • alreadyRunning completes at once: if the SDK is still launching, capture has not started, and waitUntilLaunched settles it.
  • Stopping. A launch while stopping is LaunchFailure.stopping. Android sets STOPPING synchronously. iOS sets it a main-queue hop later (+[Bugsee stop:] dispatches to main first), so a launch after an unawaited stop() used to read launched and be dropped. The plugin now marks the stop before that hop (beginStop).
  • Deferred. iOS defers a launch made while the app state is background and answers started: YES with nothing launched; this is reported as LaunchResult.deferred, which is not a failure. A plain cold-start await Bugsee.launch before runApp returned launched on the iOS simulator, under the test harness and under a real flutter run cold start. deferred there needs an app that is not yet active (for example an engine started in didFinishLaunching); this was not reproduced.
  • Errors. An SDK exception crosses as launch-failed and becomes BugseeLaunchException (no token or options in the message). A missing binding (background isolate) or an unregistered plugin becomes a clear BugseeException.
  • Wrapper identity. The Dart side attaches and refines the wrapper identity before the SDK launches; the runtime log shows registered, then refined, then the launch callback.

Spec findings

  • Workbook 8.2 is stale at the pins. iOS 7.0.0-beta7 registers the same hidden com.bugsee.option.$$ENDPOINT (nextgen d33dcc987, 2026-09-17, before beta7) and strips a trailing /v2 itself, like Android. One version-less value under one key goes to both, normalised only in lib/src/options/endpoint.dart. Runtime-verified: the SDK reports http://10.0.2.2:8099 (Android) and http://localhost:8099 (iOS) for .../v2/.
  • Workbook 8.3 is half stale. getLaunchOptions is merged defaults and overrides on both platforms. getHostLaunchOptions still differs: Android returns everything the app passed, iOS only what differs from its default (BGSBugseeEnvironment hostLaunchOptions). This is documented on the API and asserted in the integration test.

Verification (local)

  • Dart. Format, flutter analyze (also from a fresh clone) and flutter test (309) pass. pub publish --dry-run reports 0 warnings, and actionlint is clean.
  • Native. Gradle JUnit passes (169, 23 of them new) and xcodebuild test passes (the new tests include checks against the real iOS framework).
  • Generators and builds. Pigeon --check, options --check and sync --check pass. Debug apk and iOS no-codesign builds pass.
  • Runtime. example/integration_test/launch_test.dart and cold_start_test.dart pass on emulator-5562 and the iPhone 17 simulator. They cover:
    • transitions launching, launched, stopping, stopped, launching, launched, ...;
    • options read back from the SDK, with enums as integers;
    • a blank token raising a typed error;
    • launching twice returning alreadyRunning;
    • the Android auto-init case, and the auto-init=false remedy;
    • a launch refused after an unawaited stop. Without the iOS beginStop the same test fails, which reproduces the review finding.
  • Mutation checks. About 100 mutants were killed across the Dart, JUnit, XCTest, CI-guard and --check tests.

NOT verified

  • CI. GitHub Actions was blocked by billing; no workflow, including the new options-codegen job, has run.
  • Stop-race on Android. The launch-refused-while-stopping race at runtime was only exercised on iOS; Android is covered by fakes.
  • iOS background deferral at runtime (the SDK branch is read from source).
  • Token rejection by the SDK itself: a placeholder token launches.
  • The leak module, and tvOS/visionOS.
  • The Android SDK's option container needs an Android runtime, so the real handling of the translated map is shown only by the on-device runs.

…k and docs extraction scripts

Android 7.4.2 and iOS 7.0.0-beta7 each publish an immutable options manifest generated
from their live registry (download.bugsee.com/sdk/options). Vendored verbatim, with a
sync script (--check refetches), a source cross-check (keys, hidden keys and enum values
against SDK source: agrees), the SDKs' own option prose extracted from source, and a
parity test: strict on keys/types/enum values across platforms, default differences
listed explicitly.

…ifests; one encoder, one endpoint rule

scripts/generate_options.dart turns the vendored manifests (and the SDKs' own docs) into the
registry of every option per platform and the typed BugseeOptions with its enums, each enum
constant carrying the SDK's internal value. encodeLaunchOptions builds the one flat map both
SDKs take: a key neither SDK registers, a hidden key or a wrong type is an ArgumentError (the
SDKs drop all three in silence); an option or enum constant the other platform lacks is
skipped with a warning. The endpoint is normalised in one place: at the pinned iOS the
namespaced $$ENDPOINT key and /v2 stripping already match Android, so the workbook's
asymmetry (8.2) no longer applies.

…unch on both platforms

Bugsee.launch(token, options), stop(), status, statusChanges, getStatus, getLaunchOptions and
getHostLaunchOptions, over new Pigeon calls (launch/stop/status/launchOptions; strings by
name, no Pigeon enum). The Dart side attaches the bridge and refines the wrapper identity
before the SDK launches; native decides with the SDK behind a seam: status first (an SDK
already launching or launched, e.g. Android auto-init from the manifest token, is answered
already-running because its callback cannot tell a dropped launch from a real one), a stop in
progress is refused, iOS background launches are reported deferred. Android turns the enum
numbers into the SDK's constants by the enum's own factory (the SDK drops a number on the map
path); iOS takes them as they are. SDK exceptions cross as a typed launch-failed error.
BugseeStatus is now public. Drift guards compare the vocabulary across Dart/Java/Objective-C
and the Android enum table with the registry.

…LAUDE.md, CI.md, PLAN.md

The example app launches through the public API with a real-looking option set; its integration
test runs launch, status transitions, options readback, launching twice, stop and relaunch against
the real SDK (passes on an Android emulator and an iOS simulator). The options-codegen job runs the
offline generator check; the weekly native-pins workflow refetches the vendored manifests.
getHostLaunchOptions is documented as differing between the platforms (checked at runtime).

…ecated options, name overrides

A launch right after an unawaited stop is refused on iOS (the SDK only moves to Stopping a
main-queue hop later); a custom enum NAME is mapped to its number (iOS reads a string as 0);
an unknown severity is left out (fromIntValue answers VeryLow); deprecated options get no typed
field and warn through custom; compound field names and VideoQuality.defaultQuality are fixed
by an override table that fails when stale; ReportSeverity.minValue/maxValue are internal.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 90a73

The launch and stop completion paths on Android and iOS now answer Dart exactly once, even if the SDK calls back repeatedly or throws after calling back. No unresolved merge-blocking issues remain in the reviewed changes.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 90a73

The new recording controls include input validation and guarded completion handling. No introduced security defect was established, but overlapping launch and stop operations, deferred starts, and engine replacement remain incompletely verified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant scope is the host application's shared capture lifecycle and capture configuration, not an isolated per-engine resource. Code with access to an attached engine's host channels can invoke lifecycle operations against that shared SDK; the inspected entrypoints do not establish cross-application or administrative authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Option-policy enforcement resides in the public Dart path, not the native channel boundary. Native converters accept primitive-valued entries without repeating the registry's hidden-key and unknown-key rejection. Direct channel access therefore bypasses facade validation, but no less-trusted caller was established that would make this a privilege escalation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Reply guards establish at-most-once delivery, not cancellation of capture work. Accepted operations have no bridge-level generation or cancellation mechanism tied to engine teardown. Repository tests describe refusal when stop overtakes launch, but do not independently establish native cancellation of delayed or deferred starts across teardown and replacement. Capture continuing after a completed stop was not demonstrated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document shared lifecycle ownership and verify that stop cancels outstanding and deferred launches across engine teardown and replacement before treating its completion as a privacy revocation barrier. Verification should cover delayed callbacks, concurrent callers and subsequent relaunch with changed capture options.

Review of PR #9: Phase 4a options, launch, stop and status

I found no confirmed bugs, so I'm posting no inline comments. This was a read-only review. I did not run flutter test, Gradle, xcodebuild or the generators, and I did not push anything.

  • Read the PR context and the base diff against origin/feat/phase-3c-report-handlers
  • Reviewed the Dart launch path: bugsee_runtime.dart, bugsee.dart, launch.dart, status.dart
  • Reviewed the option encoding: launch_options.dart, endpoint.dart, option_registry.dart
  • Reviewed Android: LaunchOps, LaunchOptionValues, BugseeSdk, BugseeFlutterPlugin
  • Reviewed iOS: BGSFlutterLaunchOps.m and the Swift plugin
  • Checked the CI, native-versions.json and native_versions_test.dart changes, and the integration test's coverage of before-launch option reads

What I tried to break

  • Enum names to numbers. _checkValue merges the iOS and Android name tables, with Android winning on a clash. I compared the vendored manifests: no enum name maps to different numbers on the two platforms. Raw (Android only) and VeryLow/Low (value 1, named differently) don't conflict. The merge is safe at these pins. A future SDK that reuses a name with a different number would break it silently, so it would be worth a one-line assertion in option_manifests_test.dart.
  • Endpoint normalisation. I traced /v2/, /v2/v2, a bare host, a host named v2, and a query or fragment. They all behave as documented.
  • Option encoding. I checked a typed field and custom setting the same key, hidden keys, non-finite floats, and an enum constant that exists on only one platform. Each is rejected, skipped with a warning, or encoded as the code comments describe.
  • Android enum conversion. LaunchOptionValues.toSdk rejects fractional and out-of-range numbers instead of wrapping them, and the severity range check stops fromIntValue from silently turning an unknown value into VeryLow.
  • Launch outcome. Both natives read the status before calling the SDK and only then launch. LaunchOps.launch never throws. Dart rejects a blank token before touching native.
  • Stop and launch race on iOS. beginStop is called synchronously before the main-queue hop. endStop runs on both the success and the exception path, before done. Overlapping stops are counted, so one finishing doesn't clear the other.
  • waitUntilLaunched. It subscribes before it reads the status, and a stale replayed stopped can't complete it as a failure. The launching then stopped failure path is handled. The deferred iOS case waits for launched or times out.
  • Hidden options. launchOptions removes $$ keys on the Dart side whatever native sends.

Unverified assumptions about the native SDKs (P3 hardening, not blocking)

I could not check these from the repo, because the SDKs are private and the source isn't vendored. Both are the sort of thing the PR's own runtime runs would have caught if they had misbehaved. Neither is a demonstrated bug.

  1. Launch callback fires once. Both native bridges answer the Pigeon call once per SDK callback: Android through onMain(() -> result.success(...)), iOS through continuation.resume. If the SDK ever invokes the launch callback twice, for example on a deferred iOS launch that later starts, Android hits "Reply already submitted" and iOS hits a checked-continuation double resume, which can trap. A tiny once-flag around the reply in LaunchOps.launch and +launchWithSdk:... would turn that into a no-op for little cost.
  2. iOS stop always completes. gStopsInFlight is only decremented when [Bugsee stop:] calls its completion or throws. If the real SDK skips the completion in some state, such as stop on a never-launched SDK or stop during launching, every later launch is refused as stopping for the rest of the process. The XCTest covers a fake that calls done at once when stopped, and the iOS integration run covers launch, stop and relaunch. A stop-before-any-launch case on the real iOS SDK would close the gap.

Smaller notes

  • The Docstring Coverage warning from CodeRabbit is about functions touched by the diff. The public API in bugsee.dart, launch.dart and status.dart is already well documented, so I wouldn't spend effort there.
  • .claude/CLAUDE.md shows as modified in my checkout's working tree. It matches an older version than the one in HEAD. I didn't touch it.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low to Medium. The new surface is large, but the decisions sit behind unit-testable seams with drift guards. The remaining risk is native SDK behaviour that the PR lists as not verified.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve from my side once the stacked bases (Phase 1: foundations for the 7.x Flutter SDK #3 to Phase 3c: report handlers, report proxy core, requestData confirmation (stacked on #7) #8) merge and CI runs. Nothing I found blocks it. CI has never run on this branch because of the billing block, so the options-codegen job and the full matrix are unproven. Re-run them before merging.
  3. Most important things to do:
    • Get a green CI run, including the new options-codegen job and the macOS iOS build.
    • Optionally add the once-guard on launch replies on both platforms (note 1 above).
    • Optionally run iOS stop() on a never-launched SDK to confirm the completion fires (note 2 above).
  4. Positives:
    • Reading the status first avoids Android's silent option-dropping on auto-init.
    • Strict ArgumentErrors replace the SDKs' silent drops of unknown keys or wrong types.
    • Enums cross by value, never by ordinal, and the Android table is checked against the real SDK enums.
    • The vendored manifests are verified against SDK source.
    • The review fixes added regression tests, including one that fails without beginStop.
    • The PR description is candid about what was not verified.

Re-review of PR #9 after the latest push

No new findings, so I'm posting no inline comments. This was read-only. I did not run flutter test, Gradle, xcodebuild or the generators, and I pushed nothing.

What changed since my last review (up to bc16390):

  • c2a3937 adds a test to test/option_manifests_test.dart. For every shared enum option, no member name may map to different numbers on Android and iOS. This is the assertion I suggested last time. It closes the gap in the Dart enum's name-table merge, where Android wins on a clash. The loop covers every shared option whose manifest entry has an enum on both platforms, so a future SDK that reuses a name with a different number will fail the test.
  • c91c2ef merges the phase-3c base (secure-rectangle retry/backoff and report-handler sweep commits). I did not re-review those commits here. They belong to the base PRs.
  • e0d99f1 fixes the bridge test fake, which is test-only.

Earlier findings: the enum-name collision note is fixed by c2a3937. The two P3 hardening notes are not addressed. They were unverified assumptions about native SDK behaviour, not demonstrated bugs.

  • Launch reply once-guard: add a once-flag around the launch reply on both platforms. A double SDK callback would otherwise hit "Reply already submitted" on Android and a double continuation resume on iOS.
  • iOS stop() before any launch: confirm the SDK always calls the stop completion. If it doesn't, gStopsInFlight never drops and later launches are refused as stopping.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low to Medium, unchanged. The remaining risk is native SDK behaviour the PR lists as not verified.
  2. Merge recommendation: Nothing here blocks merge. CI has not run on this branch because of the billing block, so get a green run first. That run should include the options-codegen job and the macOS iOS build. Merge after the stacked bases (Phase 1: foundations for the 7.x Flutter SDK #3 to Phase 3c: report handlers, report proxy core, requestData confirmation (stacked on #7) #8).
  3. Most important things to do: get a green CI run. Optionally add the once-guard on launch replies and check the iOS stop-before-launch case on the real SDK.
  4. Positives: the reviewer-suggested drift assertion landed quickly with a clear reason message, and the PR keeps adding regression tests alongside its fixes.

Re-review of PR #9 after the latest push

No new findings, so I'm posting no inline comments. This was read-only. I did not run flutter test, Gradle, xcodebuild or the generators, and I pushed nothing.

What changed since my last review (up to c91c2ef):

  • 7a51a66 merges the phase-3c base branch into this one. It brings in 151a6a8 (secure-rectangle retry throttle) and d59d003 (the ReportHandlerPipelineTest ceiling). The diff between c91c2ef and 7a51a66 touches only secure_region.dart, secure_region_test.dart, ReportHandlerPipelineTest.java and .claude/CLAUDE.md. Nothing from the Phase 4a options and launch path changed.
  • I skimmed the secure-region change. A changed state after maxRetries now waits at most retryDelay since the last send, through a single expedited timer, with an injectable monotonic clock. I saw no problem in that skim, but the base PR owns the full review.

Earlier findings:

  • The enum-name collision note was fixed by c2a3937.
  • The two P3 hardening notes are still open. They are unverified assumptions about native SDK behaviour, not demonstrated bugs:
    • Add a once-guard around the launch reply on both platforms. A double SDK callback would otherwise hit "Reply already submitted" on Android and a double continuation resume on iOS.
    • Check iOS stop() before any launch on the real SDK. If the completion never fires, gStopsInFlight stays above zero and later launches are refused as stopping.

Summary

Optionally add the launch-reply once-guard and check the iOS stop-before-launch case on the real SDK.
  4. Positives: the push only syncs the base, and the Phase 4a surface is unchanged since the last review.

…ude review note)

A second SDK callback (a deferred iOS launch that later starts) would be
'Reply already submitted' on Android and a double resume of a checked
continuation on iOS. Guard with a flag; tested with a fake that calls back
twice and one that calls back and then throws. The iOS stop-before-launch
completion remains unverified on the real SDK (documented).

Re-review of PR #9 after the latest push

No new findings, so I'm posting no inline comments. This was read-only. I did not run flutter test, Gradle, xcodebuild or the generators, and I pushed nothing.

What changed since my last review (up to 7a51a66):

  • b996ea1 adds a once-guard around the launch reply on both platforms. This is the first of my two earlier hardening notes.
    • Android (LaunchOps.java:83-113): an AtomicBoolean with compareAndSet in the SDK callback. The catch skips error.error when the callback already answered.
    • iOS (BGSFlutterLaunchOps.m): an NSLock and a __block BOOL. The @catch skips the error completion when started: already ran.
    • Both sides get a test for a double callback and a test for callback-then-throw. The iOS helper also asserts the completion ran exactly once.
  • 1f19d4e merges the base branch. bbf0289 is a CLAUDE.md wording fix. Neither touches code I reviewed earlier.

I traced the guard and found no problem. The callback reads and sets the flag atomically on Android and under the lock on iOS, so a callback on any thread is safe. Pre-callback replies (invalid token, already running, stopping) return before the SDK is called, so they can't be answered twice.

Earlier findings:

  • Launch-reply once-guard: fixed by b996ea1.
  • iOS stop() before any launch (still open, unverified, not blocking): gStopsInFlight only drops when the real [Bugsee stop:] calls its completion or throws. If the SDK skips the completion when it was never launched, or is mid-launching, every later launch is refused as stopping for the rest of the process. The fake-based XCTest and the launch, stop, relaunch integration run don't cover this case. One run of stop() on a fresh real iOS SDK would settle it.
  • Enum-name collision note: fixed earlier by c2a3937.

Summary

  3. Most important things to do:
    • Get a green CI run.
    • Optionally check iOS stop() before any launch on the real SDK.
  4. Positives: the once-guard landed on both platforms with tests for both double-callback paths, and the Phase 4a surface is otherwise unchanged.

Cover once-only stop completion when adding the guard.

stopWithSdk:done: can call done from both the SDK callback and the exception handler. BugseeFlutterPlugin.stop() resumes a checked continuation from that callback. When adding the once-only guard, test both a duplicate callback and a callback followed by an exception. Assert that the completion runs once.

Mark the stop before delegating to the Android SDK.

BugseeFlutterPlugin.stop calls Bugsee.stop(done) without recording a local stopping state. LaunchOps.launch can therefore read the previous SDK status before the SDK updates it, call Bugsee.launch, and return launched or failed instead of the documented refused/stopping result. Record the in-progress stop before calling the SDK, expose stopping until the callback completes, and clear it on completion or error.

Guard stop against a double answer.

launch answers only once, even if the SDK calls back twice or calls back and then throws. stop has no such guard. If sdk.stop(done) runs done and then throws, done runs and then error.error(t) runs. BugseeFlutterPlugin posts both to the same Messages.VoidResult. The second call is a duplicate reply on the platform channel. The same happens if the SDK runs done twice.

Use the same AtomicBoolean pattern as launch.

Guard stopWithSdk:done: against a double completion.

launchWithSdk: answers only once. The comment at Line 112 says a second answer resumes the Swift checked continuation twice, which traps. stopWithSdk:done: has no such guard.

  • If [sdk stop:] runs its block and then throws, done(nil) runs and then done(error) runs. endStop also runs twice. The second endStop can decrement the count of another stop that is still in flight.
  • If the SDK calls the stop block twice, done(nil) runs twice and endStop runs twice.

Add a once-only guard that covers the block and the @catch path.

A stop whose SDK calls back twice, or calls back and then throws, answered
twice (a duplicate channel reply on Android; on iOS also a second endStop that
could release another stop's in-flight mark). Same once-guard as launch, with
tests and mutation checks on both platforms.

  • f007111 adds a once-guard to stop on both platforms. This is CodeRabbit's "stop answered once" finding. It touches only LaunchOps.java, BGSFlutterLaunchOps.m and their two tests.
    • Android (LaunchOps.java:117-135): an AtomicBoolean guards the SDK callback and the catch path, the same pattern as launch.
    • iOS (BGSFlutterLaunchOps.m:171-194): an NSLock and a claim block guard the callback and the @catch. endStop runs only for the winning path, so a duplicate callback or a throw after the callback can't release the in-flight mark of another stop.
  • 5ea84c4 merges the base branch. I did not re-review the base PR's commits here.

I traced the guards and found no problem. The XCTest testAStopIsAnsweredOnceAndNeverReleasesAnotherStopsMark covers a double callback plus a throw, and it checks that a second in-flight stop still refuses launches. BugseeFlutterPlugin.swift calls beginStop before the main-queue hop, and its checked continuation is resumed only through done, so it can no longer be resumed twice.

CodeRabbit's remaining open comment (Android: record the stop before Bugsee.stop): I don't consider it a finding.

  • The PR description says Android sets STOPPING synchronously, read from SDK source. I can't check that, because the Android SDK is private.
  • It is the same unverified-SDK-behaviour category as before. The PR already lists it as covered only by fakes.
  • If the Android runtime ever showed a launch after an unawaited stop() returning launched, a beginStop counterpart would fix it. One Android run of stop() followed at once by launch() would settle it.

Earlier findings:

  • Launch-reply once-guard: fixed by b996ea1.
  • Enum-name collision note: fixed by c2a3937.
  • iOS stop() before any launch (still open, unverified, not blocking): gStopsInFlight only drops when the real [Bugsee stop:] calls its completion or throws. If the SDK skips the completion when it is stopped or mid-launching, every later launch is refused as stopping for the rest of the process. The fakes never skip the completion, and the integration run covers launch, stop and relaunch only. One run of stop() on a fresh real iOS SDK would settle it.

Summary

  3. Most important things to do:
    • Get a green CI run.
    • Optionally check iOS stop() on a never-launched real SDK.
    • Optionally check Android stop() followed at once by launch() on a device.
  4. Positives: the stop once-guard landed on both platforms with tests for the double-callback and callback-then-throw paths. It also keeps the per-stop in-flight mark correct.

Comment thread .claude/CLAUDE.md Outdated
- Report handlers (workbook Part 7; `ReportHandlerPipeline.java`, `BGSFlutterReportHandlerPipeline.m`, Dart `lib/src/report` + `BugseeBridge.setReportHandlers`): the SDK completion runs exactly once on every path and the pipeline NEVER blocks (iOS calls the handler on the main thread and Dart's reply needs it: a wait is a deadlock; `test/report_handlers_drift_test.dart` greps for blocking primitives and for `isTerminating` being decided before anything touches Dart, time or the report). Terminating, no registered phase, no attached Dart, or a path the SDK does not wait on: complete at once. The window is the SDK's budget less a margin of a third (at most 10 s): 20 s live of the SDK's 30 s, iOS recovery 2 s of 3 s; the SDK's numbers are EXTRACTED from SDK source into `test/fixtures/report_enums.json` (`scripts/extract_report_enums.dart`, with the iOS source ref) and compared with the wrapper's by the drift guard, never wrapper against wrapper. The SDK starts its timer when it QUEUES the handler and ours starts at entry: that wait is not observable, only the margin absorbs it (an edit after the SDK moved on can still be accepted: documented limit); the observable hop to the platform thread is deducted (`deadlineMs` sent to Dart is what is left; an over window is completed, not offered). An edit holds the per-handle lock across check-and-apply and `done` flips under it, the SDK completion/Dart/scheduler are called outside it. `resetReportHandlers` (called first by `start()`) completes a previous isolate's outstanding deliveries. The drift guard bans blocking primitives in every file of the report path and allow-lists each `synchronized`. The path is told apart by thread for the time budget only; never pass it to Dart, never infer a recovered crash (7.2.3). The proxy is live until the completion runs; native answers `false` to a late edit and Dart throws `ReportClosedError`. `onBefore` at-most-once, `onAfter` at-least-once: Dart dedupes on the stable `deliveryId`. Enums cross by value; the Pigeon bridge declares NO enum (Pigeon sends ordinals); `test/fixtures/report_enums.json` is extracted from both SDKs by `scripts/extract_report_enums.dart` (re-run when a native pin moves: the parity test fails on stale pins) and compared with Dart/Java/ObjC, and the JUnit/XCTest compare it to the real SDK enums. Attachments are Phase 6 (path-first).
- Options and launch (workbook Part 8; Phase 4a). The two SDKs PUBLISH an immutable options manifest per release (bugsee/specs `sdk/options`, generated from their live registry, so complete: extension modules, null defaults, hidden keys); both are vendored verbatim in `test/fixtures/option_manifests/{android,ios}.json` (`scripts/sync_option_manifests.dart`, `--check` refetches, weekly in `native-pins.yml`; the pins are in `native-versions.json` `optionsManifest`). `scripts/verify_option_manifests.dart` is an independent read of SDK SOURCE (keys, hidden keys, enum values; needs the private SDK checkouts, so local only, last result in PLAN.md). `scripts/extract_option_docs.dart` extracts the SDKs' own prose into `docs.json` (also local; a few options have no prose in source and carry a labelled `wrapper` description). `scripts/generate_options.dart` writes `lib/src/options/option_registry.g.dart` and `bugsee_options.g.dart` (the typed `BugseeOptions`, its enums) from those three; `--check` runs offline in CI (`options-codegen` job). Never hand-edit the `.g.dart`. A new SDK enum, a type that differs between platforms, or one value with two names fails the generator on purpose: decide, then record it (`enumFamilies`, `knownNameDivergences`, and the test lists in `test/option_manifests_test.dart`). Field name = key (`capture.video.frame-rate` -> `captureVideoFrameRate`). `test/option_manifests_test.dart`: STRICT on keys, types and enum values across platforms, default differences listed explicitly (a new one fails until reviewed); one-sided enum members (`FrameRate.raw`, Android only) listed explicitly.
- Option encoding (`lib/src/options/launch_options.dart`): ONE flat `com.bugsee.option.*` map goes to both platforms, nothing is renamed per platform. Enums cross as the SDK INTERNAL integer. A key or enum constant the other platform lacks is SKIPPED with a debug warning (a shared configuration may set platform options); a key neither SDK registers, a hidden key, a wrong type, a value neither SDK has, a typed+custom duplicate or a bad endpoint is an `ArgumentError` BEFORE native is touched (both SDKs drop all of these silently). The one platform-specific step is natively Android: its map path takes an enum as the constant or its NAME and DROPS a number, so `LaunchOptionValues.java` turns the integer into the constant through the enum's own factory (never `values()[n]`); its table is compared with the manifest by JUnit (by value, against the real SDK enums) and by `test/launch_drift_test.dart`. iOS takes the numbers as they are (XCTest against the real SDK). Bundled modules (`bugsee-android`, `-ndk`; iOS `Bugsee`) get typed fields; the leak module's four options and deprecated options (one at the pins) do not (`custom` reaches them, with a warning for a deprecated one; a custom enum NAME is mapped to its number by the manifest, since iOS KVC would read a string as 0) (repeated in the generator and `launch_options.dart`, compared with `android/build.gradle`).
- Endpoint (workbook 8.2 is stale for the pinned SDKs): iOS 7.0.0-beta7 registers the SAME hidden `com.bugsee.option.$$ENDPOINT` (manifest, nextgen d33dcc987) and strips trailing `/v2` itself, like Android; the flat `endpoint` is only a legacy alias. So one version-less value under the one namespaced key goes to both (`lib/src/options/endpoint.dart`, the only place; runtime-verified on both). If an SDK diverges again, change only that file. `BugseeOptions.endpoint` is the one supported hidden-key override; the SDKs strip hidden options from uploaded `sdk.options` (8.4), the wrapper never sends `$$WRAPPER`/`$$DEBUG`.

Qualify the endpoint verification claim.

example/integration_test/launch_test.dart does not set or assert the endpoint. It only tests the endpoint when BUGSEE_ENDPOINT is supplied, and hidden options are expected to be absent from the SDK response. This test does not establish runtime endpoint handling on either platform.

Claim the answer in the catch path, not only read it.

The catch block reads answered.get(), but it does not set answered. The SDK can schedule its callback on another thread and then throw from sdk.launch. In that case, error.error(t) runs first. Later, the callback's compareAndSet(false, true) succeeds and reply.outcome(...) runs. BugseeFlutterPlugin.launch posts both answers to the same Messages.Result. The second answer is "Reply already submitted", and it throws on the platform thread. The Javadoc says reply is called exactly once "otherwise", so a reply after an error breaks that contract. To make error and outcome mutually exclusive, use compareAndSet in the catch block.

Set answered in the @catch path.

The @catch block reads answered, but it does not set it. The SDK can retain started: and throw before it calls the block. In that case, completion(nil, nil, error) runs first. Later, the started: block sees answered == NO and calls completion a second time. The comment at Line 112-113 says a second answer resumes the Swift checked continuation twice, which traps. To make the error answer and the outcome answer mutually exclusive, set answered = YES under the lock.

An SDK that throws after scheduling its callback elsewhere answered twice (the
error, then the late callback). The catch now claims the flag. CLAUDE.md said
the endpoint handling was runtime-verified; the integration test does not assert
it, so the claim now says what is actually covered.

Re-review of PR #9 after the latest push

No new findings, so I'm posting no inline comments. This was read-only. I did not run flutter test, Gradle, xcodebuild or the generators, and I pushed nothing.

What changed since my last review (up to 5ea84c4):

  • c5cc8f6 is the substantive commit. It closes the two CodeRabbit "claim the answer in the catch path" comments.
    • Android (LaunchOps.java:109-115): the catch now uses answered.compareAndSet(false, true) before error.error(t), not answered.get(). An SDK that throws after handing its callback to another thread can no longer answer twice.
    • iOS (BGSFlutterLaunchOps.m:154-164): the @catch sets answered = YES under answeredLock, so a late started: returns early.
    • Both sides add a test for "throws, callback comes later" and assert no second answer: anSdkThatThrowsAndCallsBackLaterAnswersOnlyTheError and testAnSdkThatThrowsAndCallsStartedLaterAnswersOnlyTheError.
    • The same commit rewords the endpoint line in .claude/CLAUDE.md. It now says the wrapper's encoding is covered by tests and that the launch integration test does not assert endpoint handling at runtime. That matches what the PR can show.
  • 080d30b, 977f0d4 and the a38ef60, 32d2b0b and 90a731d merges belong to the base PRs (Phase 1: foundations for the 7.x Flutter SDK #3 to Phase 3c: report handlers, report proxy core, requestData confirmation (stacked on #7) #8). I did not re-review them here.

I traced both guards and found no problem. Each answer path (outcome callback, catch, early refusal) either claims the flag or returns before the SDK is called. So reply or error runs exactly once whatever order the SDK uses. The stop guards from f007111 are unchanged.

Earlier findings:

  • Enum-name collision note: fixed by c2a3937.
  • Launch-reply once-guard: fixed by b996ea1, now also covering the throw-then-late-callback order.
  • Stop once-guard: fixed by f007111.
  • Endpoint wording: fixed by c5cc8f6.
  • iOS stop() before any launch (still open, unverified, not blocking). gStopsInFlight only drops when the real [Bugsee stop:] calls its completion or throws. If the SDK skips the completion when it was never launched or is mid-launching, every later launch is refused as stopping for the rest of the process. One run of stop() on a fresh real iOS SDK would settle it.
  • Android: record the stop before Bugsee.stop (CodeRabbit, not a finding). BugseeSdk.stop passes straight to Bugsee.stop(done). The PR says the SDK sets STOPPING synchronously, from its source, which I can't check because the SDK is private. If one Android run of stop() followed at once by launch() returned launched, a beginStop counterpart would fix it.

Summary

  3. Most important things to do:
    • Get a green CI run.
    • Optionally check iOS stop() on a never-launched real SDK.
    • Optionally check Android stop() followed at once by launch() on a device.
  4. Positives: the catch-path fix came with a deterministic regression test on both platforms, and the CLAUDE.md claim was narrowed to what is actually verified.

Re-review of PR #9 after the latest push

No new findings, so I'm posting no inline comments. This was read-only. I did not run flutter test, Gradle, xcodebuild or the generators, and I pushed nothing.

What changed since my last review (up to 90a731d):

  • b55d549 fixes a doubled word in a PLAN.md line. It is the only change to the PR's own diff (git diff 90a731d HEAD is that one line).
  • 7115800, 9ea7362 and b07d23b merge the phase 3a, 3b and 3c base branches. They don't touch the Phase 4a files. The base PRs own those commits.

Check of CodeRabbit's open nitpick (extend the stopWithSdk:done: tests for a double completion and a callback followed by a throw): this is already covered at HEAD. testAStopIsAnsweredOnceAndNeverReleasesAnotherStopsMark (BGSFlutterLaunchOpsTests.m:172) sets stopCalls = 2 and throwAfterStop = YES. It asserts the completion ran once with no error, and that a second in-flight stop still refuses launches.

Earlier findings:

  • Enum-name collision note: fixed by c2a3937.
  • Launch-reply once-guard: fixed by b996ea1, and by c5cc8f6 for the throw-then-late-callback order.
  • Stop once-guard: fixed by f007111.
  • Endpoint wording in CLAUDE.md: fixed by c5cc8f6.
  • iOS stop() before any launch (still open, unverified, not blocking): gStopsInFlight only drops when the real [Bugsee stop:] calls its completion or throws.
The PR says the SDK sets STOPPING synchronously, from source I can't check. If one Android run of stop() followed at once by launch() returned launched, a beginStop counterpart would fix it.

Summary

  3. Most important things to do:
    • Get a green CI run.
    • Optionally check iOS stop() on a never-launched real SDK.
    • Optionally check Android stop() followed at once by launch() on a device.
  4. Positives: this push is only a doc typo fix and base merges. The Phase 4a code is unchanged since the last review, and the stop and launch once-guards have regression tests on both platforms.
