Phase 3b: secure rectangles end to end

Stacked on PR #6 (feat/phase-3a-bridge-lifecycle, itself on #3-#5). Bases must be retargeted to nextgen after #3-#6 merge.

Summary

  • Pigeon setSecureRectangles: whole state per Dart isolate, per view logical rectangles plus the device pixel ratio they were measured at, ordered by a random epoch and a sequence.
  • Dart (internal, not exported): BugseeSecureRegion / RenderSecureRegion / SecureRegionRegistry, measured every frame in a post-frame callback, published only when the set changed.
  • Android SecureRectangleStore + SecurePlacement; iOS BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore + BGSFlutterSecurePlacementTracker. Same model on both: per-display immutable snapshots, versions derived from what is served, fail closed.

What the pinned SDKs take today (from source)

  • Android 7.4.2 (BugseeWrapper.java 189-254, BugseeSecureViewsManager.refreshWrapperSecureAreas ~1830-1880, PrivacyDisplayScope.setWrapperAreas ~1495): [version,count,l,t,r,b..], physical pixels in View.getLocationOnScreen space, r/b exclusive; display = Display.getDisplayId(); version 0 = compare rectangles, non-zero equal to last seen = skip; count 0 clears; pulled on the capture thread.
  • iOS 7.0.0-beta7 (BGSContracts.h ~750-803, BGSScreenCaptureEngine.m ~2735-2960): same layout as NSData, points in the screen's coordinate space, drawn as given; display 0 only; same version semantics; pulled on the main thread today.
  • Conversion: Dart sends Flutter logical pixels and the ratio it measured at. Android: x ratio (must equal the live density, read per pull), iOS: x ratio / UIScreen.scale (= 1, the screen scale is never multiplied in). Then the Flutter view's own on-screen scale, then its screen position, then floor l/t, ceil r/b (scale before rounding).
  • Versions: derived from what is served, per display, never 0, a no-op never moves them; a display that never had a rectangle serves [0,0].

Fail-closed rules

  • Whole display is served for: unknown view placement (no activity/view controller yet, view not found, rotated or skewed view), a non-finite rectangle, a bad ratio/scale, a ratio that no longer matches the display (density changed natively before Dart relaid out; until Dart republishes), a display that reads as size 0 (fallback 16384).
  • Only a view known to be off screen (iOS: in no window) serves nothing.
  • Grace window: for 120 ms the previous set is served with a changed one (a moving region leaves no strip, a removed one stays covered); the union shrinking back moves the version. Over-covers only.
  • Dart hides a region only on positive evidence (an ancestor that does not paint it, an IndexedStack showing another child, a disabled TickerMode, a clipping viewport it lies wholly outside of). A detached layer is not evidence (SnapshotWidget / Zoom transition). Regions are reported unclipped and include what their descendants paint outside their box. Unmeasurable = whole view.
  • Epoch is a random id, never a clock: an unseen epoch is a new isolate and wins, a retired one is a straggler and is ignored.

Known limits (honest)

  • A region that has just appeared is recorded in the clear for its first frame or so: it has no previous place to union with and Dart cannot publish before layout places it (publishing from the build phase would only publish a guess).
  • Pixels drawn outside a region's subtree (Overlay magnifier, tooltip) are not known to Flutter and not covered.
  • Rotated region = its bounding box; partly clipped region is reported whole; FP noise can add a pixel; only the implicit view (id 0) is placed on mobile.

Verification

  • flutter analyze (also fresh clone), dart format, flutter test 141, codegen --check, Gradle JUnit 89, xcodebuild test 74 (iPhone 17 Pro, 3x), debug APK, flutter build ios --no-codesign.
  • Every new rule has a test that fails when it is broken; mutation checks were run for Dart (round 1: 10, round 2: 9 + TickerMode), Android (24 + 11) and iOS (24 + 12) and are listed in the PR comments / were all killed except equivalent mutants (documented).
  • Reproduced first: the Zoom page transition (SnapshotWidget) reported nothing 25 ms into a push with the previous layer-based rule; the new test passes.
  • Runtime, Android emulator 1080x2400 @420dpi (2.625), SDK launched with a dummy token and pulling ~10 Hz: rectangles in physical pixels matching the screenshot; version moved 1->2->6->8->9 across move, scroll, scroll-out and a live wm density 560; with the Zoom transition on, push and pop pulls never returned an empty set (92 pulls, 0 empty).
  • Runtime, iOS simulator 3x: served rectangles equal the logical ones in points (not x3), versions follow move/scroll (the SDK stops on a dummy token, so the registered wrapper was pulled by a temporary timer instead).
  • Temporary example/logging code was reverted.

NOT verified

  • The SDK's actual redacted video/screenshot (dummy token).
  • iOS landscape, iPad Split View / Stage Manager, Android multi-window/freeform.
  • A scaled Flutter view on a real device (unit-tested with real UIView transforms on iOS and matrix fakes on Android only).
  • CI jobs are unproven until this PR runs.

Pigeon: setSecureRectangles(SecureRectanglesMessage), whole-state, ordered by
(epoch, sequence). Dart: BugseeSecureRegion measures each region through every
ancestor transform once per frame, reports it unclipped (fail closed), drops
regions that are not painted, and publishes only when the set changed.

Per-display immutable snapshots; logical px to physical px with the density read
per pull, then outward rounding; the Flutter view's on-screen position added;
unknown placement fails closed to the whole display; versions derived from what
is served, per display. Replaces the stub; JUnit covers units, rounding,
versions, ordering and cross-thread reads.

Same model as Android with the iOS unit: points, so the factor from Flutter
logical pixels is 1 (not the screen scale); the view's position in
UIScreen.coordinateSpace is added; per-display derived versions; unknown
placement fails closed to the whole screen. XCTests cover the 3x screen,
fractional factors, versions, ordering, cross-queue reads and real UIKit views.

…flow, send the pixel ratio, random epoch

A detached layer is not evidence of invisibility: SnapshotWidget (the Zoom page
transition) paints a region into a temporary layer while its pixels are on
screen. Hidden now means: an ancestor that does not paint it, an IndexedStack
showing another child, a disabled TickerMode, or a clipping viewport it lies
wholly outside of.

…chs, fail-closed placement

Native stores serve the previous set along with a changed one for 120 ms (the
union shrinking back moves the version), scale by the ratio Dart measured at and
cover the whole display while it differs from the display's density, apply the
Flutter view's own on-screen scale (whole display if rotated or skewed), order
messages by random epoch ids with retirement instead of numeric epochs, treat a
missing activity as unknown rather than off screen, and use the fallback size
when the display reads as zero.

Deep review of PR #7: secure rectangles end to end

  • Read the PR, the stacked base diff, and CLAUDE.md
  • Reviewed the Dart registry and region code, the Android store, placement and environment, and the iOS store and tracker
  • Posted inline findings

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter or dart, and no Gradle or Xcode run was made. Everything below comes from reading the code and the base diff. The claims in the PR description about test counts and device runs are unverified by me.

Findings (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
1 P2 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:135 A disabled TickerMode is treated as proof that a region is hidden, which leaks visible content.
2 P2 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:170-197 Up to 2000 getTransformTo(null) calls (each O(depth)) per region on every frame, even when nothing moved.
3 P3 BugseeFlutterPlugin.java:62 Every engine attach installs a new SecureEnvironment into the shared store, so a second engine over-covers.
4 P3 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:149-158 The viewport "wholly outside" check ignores the region's painted overflow.

Finding 1. The file's own rule is "hide only on positive evidence". But TickerMode(enabled: false) is a public widget that apps use to freeze animations (reduce-motion, golden tests), and it says nothing about painting. A visible BugseeSecureRegion under it drops out of the set and is recorded in the clear. The test at secure_region_test.dart:522 only covers the route/overlay case.

Finding 2. _afterFrame re-arms itself every frame while any region exists. A region wrapping a screen-sized subtree can cost several milliseconds per frame, repeated for each region. Composing transforms top-down, or skipping the walk when nothing in the subtree changed, would remove most of it.

Finding 3. The comment says "One environment for the process", but each engine attach creates a new one. setResources records the view's Resources only in that engine's own instance, so once a second engine attaches the store loses the first engine's resources. The density then comes from Display.getRealMetrics. If the app overrides density in its own Resources, the ratio check fails and the whole display is covered permanently. This only over-covers, and iOS already uses a static shared environment.

Finding 4. The viewport shortcut measures only the region's own box, while the rest of the file includes painted overflow in the region. A box scrolled just out of the viewport whose overflow is still visible is dropped.

Smaller point, not posted inline. SecureRegionRegistry._published starts as {}. A new isolate that has no regions never sends anything, so it never replaces a previous isolate's regions. After a debug hot restart, the old regions stay served until the engine detaches. It over-covers only.

Previous findings

There were no earlier review comments or conversation on this PR, so nothing is repeated.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Medium. The native-side logic holds up against the failure cases I tried. These were: unit and density handling (Android pixels versus iOS points), ordering by epoch and sequence, the grace window and version derivation, lock ordering, and fail-closed fallbacks for unknown placement, bad input and a ratio mismatch. The remaining risk is mainly in the Dart "is it hidden" heuristics, plus per-frame cost.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve after fixing Feat: Add iOS helpers that put secure rectangles in screen points for SDK 7 #1 (or narrowing the TickerMode rule to cases where the region is also provably not painted), and ideally ci: add Claude PR review, drop @claude mention handler #2. Phase 1: foundations for the 7.x Flutter SDK #3 and CI/CD: format gate, publish dry-run, ci-ok, native-pins, dependabot #4 can follow. The PR's own list of unverified items (real redaction output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled view on a real device, CI jobs) still needs a pass.
  3. Most important issues to fix: Feat: Add iOS helpers that put secure rectangles in screen points for SDK 7 #1 (a possible privacy leak), then ci: add Claude PR review, drop @claude mention handler #2 (frame cost on large regions).
  4. Positives:
    • The state is immutable and swapped whole, and the lock order is consistent, so I found no deadlock.
    • Versions come from what is served, never 0, and only move on real change.
    • Failing closed is applied consistently across both platforms.
    • The Java and Objective-C constants are guarded by test/secure_rects_drift_test.dart.
    • The pull-driven placement refresh is throttled and never blocks the capture thread.
    • The wrapper identity and generated Pigeon files follow the repo rules; I did not run generate_pigeon.dart --check myself.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added secure-region tracking for transformed, scrolling, and multi-view Flutter content.
    • Secure regions synchronize across Android and iOS with ordered updates, versioning, and platform-specific coordinate conversion.
    • Visibility, lifecycle, screen placement, and device-ratio changes update automatically, with bounded retry handling for temporary failures.
    • Previous coverage is briefly retained during movement or removal transitions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Invalid or ambiguous measurements now protect the entire view or display.
    • Off-screen and degenerate regions are omitted.
    • Improved clipping, stale-update handling, and coordinate conversion.

The change adds Flutter secure-region measurement and publication through a bridge contract. Android and iOS now track view placement and convert logical rectangles into versioned display snapshots. Native stores apply owner, epoch, and sequence ordering, retain prior coverage during a grace period, and use full-display coverage when placement or measurements are unusable. The change also adds platform tests, drift checks, and updated documentation.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 71158

The secure rectangle change adds Flutter measurement and native placement tracking on Android and iOS. The earlier documentation gaps in PLAN.md are now fixed. No supported blocking issue remains in the reviewed material.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 71158

The new privacy protection depends on asynchronous updates reaching the recorder. Conservative masking limits coordinate errors, but newly displayed content can precede its protection, and failed delivery can extend that interval. Existing capture is not shown to become less secure, but end-to-end recording behavior has not been verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is sensitive application content entering recorded video or report screenshots before its mask is available; the widget also promises tap filtering. State replacement is owner-scoped, but conservative unknown-placement fallback can cover an entire requested display. This gives failures display-wide masking impact within the application process, rather than establishing a new cross-service or tenant authority boundary.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A capture occurring after sensitive content appears but before native acceptance can receive an old or empty rectangle set. Failed delivery can extend that interval: retries repair state eventually, while grace retains only previously known rectangles. This is a limitation of the new internal protection path, not a verified capture leak or demonstrated worsening of the base's existing exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The message supplies geometry and ordering metadata, not the native owner identity. Each plugin publishes under its assigned owner, preserving other owners' lanes. Stores reject non-increasing sequences within an epoch and messages from retained retired epochs. Epochs provide ordering identity, not authentication of application content.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Android pulls request asynchronous placement refresh and use whole-display fallback when an outstanding refresh exceeds the stale threshold. iOS refreshes immediately for main-thread pulls and schedules throttled refresh for off-main pulls. These are distinct freshness models; the off-main iOS path does not contain the Android outstanding-refresh fallback.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before offering strict redaction guarantees, evaluate a presentation or capture barrier that establishes conservative native protection before sensitive content becomes visible and releases it only after the current generation is acknowledged. Validate actual video, screenshots, and tap handling against both pinned SDKs during appearance, movement, interrupted publication, and recovery.

Severity: P2 Medium (fail-open)

Problem: if (!box.tickerEnabled) return true; treats a disabled TickerMode as proof the region is not on screen. TickerMode only stops animations. It says nothing about painting. The file's own rule is "hide only on positive evidence that none of its pixels are on screen".

Impact: A region that is visible but sits under TickerMode(enabled: false) is not reported, so its pixels are recorded in the clear. This is a leak, and the tests only cover the Navigator/Overlay case (secure_region_test.dart:522).

Scenario: An app freezes animations (reduce-motion setting, a golden or screenshot mode, a paused tab) with TickerMode(enabled: false) around a screen that contains a card-number field wrapped in BugseeSecureRegion. The region is dropped, the set goes empty, and the field is recorded.

Fix: Use evidence that the content is not painted: paintsChild on the ancestors, Offstage, or the overlay theater's own skipped-child handling. If TickerMode stays as a signal, add a second condition that proves the region is not painted. For example, a covered route's entries are also offstage or skipped by the theater. Otherwise drop this rule and accept over-covering routes below an opaque route, which Navigator already offstages or skips.

Severity: P2 Medium (performance)

Problem: _afterFrame re-measures every region on every frame while any region exists (lines 336-339). For each region, _paintedRect visits up to 2000 descendants. Each visit calls child.getTransformTo(null), which walks the whole ancestor chain (O(depth)) and allocates a list and Matrix4s. That is up to about 2000 × depth applyPaintTransform calls per region per frame, even when nothing moved. The paintBounds of each node is also read.

Impact: A secure region wrapping a whole form or screen, with hundreds of render objects at a depth of 50-100, adds a few milliseconds of main-thread work per frame in release. It is much worse in debug and profile builds, and the work is repeated for every region. This can cause jank in exactly the screens that use the feature.

Scenario: BugseeSecureRegion(child: Scaffold(...)) around a scrolling list. Every frame, including idle animations elsewhere, walks the full subtree.

Fix:

  • Accumulate transforms top-down from box (compose each child's applyPaintTransform onto the parent's matrix) instead of calling getTransformTo(null) per node.
  • Skip the descendant walk when no node in the subtree was laid out or painted since the last measurement, and only recompute the box's transform (which is what scrolling and animations change).
  • Lower the cap and fail closed, or run the walk only on frames where the region's subtree was marked dirty.

final SecureEnvironment environment = new SecureEnvironment(binding.getApplicationContext());
// One environment for the process; it keeps what each engine's view reports.

Severity: P3 Low (multi-engine; fails closed)

Problem: The comment says "One environment for the process", but every engine attach creates a new SecureEnvironment and installs it into the process-wide store (store.setEnvironment(environment)). Each engine's SecurePlacement registers its view's Resources only in its own instance (environment.setResources(...)). The store reads whichever environment was installed last. iOS does this correctly with a static let environment.

Impact: With two engines attached (add-to-app with several FlutterEngines), engine A's resources are never visible to the store once B attaches. nativePixelRatio() falls back to Display.getRealMetrics().density. If the app overrides the density in its own Resources (a per-activity densityDpi override, font or display-size handling), that value differs from the Flutter view's ratio. The ratio check then fails and the whole display is covered permanently for A's regions. That is over-covering, not a leak.

Fix: Make the environment a process-wide singleton (static final, created from the application context on first attach), as in BugseeFlutterPlugin.swift. Only install it once.

Severity: P3 Low (fail-open, narrow)

Problem: The "wholly outside a clipping viewport" test uses only the region's own box (Offset.zero & box.size). The library comment says descendants' paint overflow is part of the region (_paintedRect).

Impact: A region whose box is scrolled out of the viewport but whose descendants overflow back into it (a Transform.translate, OverflowBox or Stack with clipBehavior: Clip.none inside the region) is judged hidden and not reported, while its overflow is visible.

Scenario: ListView item containing BugseeSecureRegion(child: OverflowBox(...)) where the box is just past the viewport edge and the painted overflow reaches into it.

Fix: Run the viewport test on the same overflow-inclusive rectangle _paintedRect computes (transformed into the viewport's space), or skip this shortcut when the region has painted overflow.

Remove or rewrite this test. It sets the same ratio twice and contradicts the current contract.

Line 782 sets devicePixelRatio = 1, and Line 788 sets it to 1 again. No ratio changes, so the test cannot fail.

The comment on Lines 786-787 also describes the old contract ("native rescales them with its own, per-call, scale"). Under the new contract, the message carries the measured ratio, and a ratio change must be republished. The test on Lines 638-654 checks exactly that.

.claude/CLAUDE.md says every secure-rectangle rule has a test that fails when the rule breaks. This test cannot fail, and its name states the opposite rule. Delete it, or rename it to cover a case that can fail, such as a no-op rebuild at an unchanged ratio.

Build up descendant transforms during the walk instead of calling getTransformTo(null) on each child.

The registry calls measure() on every frame while any region exists (Lines 333-339). For each region, _paintedRect visits up to _maxDescendants (2000) children. For each child, it calls child.getTransformTo(null). That call walks from the child to the root and multiplies one matrix per ancestor. The cost per region per frame is therefore about descendants × tree depth matrix products. Scrolling and transitions pay this cost on every frame. A secure region that wraps a large form is a normal use case.

Pass the parent's accumulated matrix down instead. Each child then needs one applyPaintTransform and one multiply. The result is the same, and the cost becomes linear in the number of descendants.

Re-review of PR #7 after the latest push

  • Read the PR, the earlier review comments and the new commit
  • Reviewed the Android and iOS stores, placement and tracker code
  • Posted one new inline finding

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code.

What changed since the last review

The only new commit is 0c951c1, which changes test/secure_region_test.dart only. It adds an ignore_for_file: deprecated_member_use for cacheExtent, and runs the Cupertino transition test through the platform default instead of an explicit builder. No production code changed, so none of the earlier findings are fixed:

  • secure_region.dart:135: a disabled TickerMode still counts as proof that a region is hidden (P2).
  • secure_region.dart:170-197: getTransformTo(null) is still called for each descendant on every frame (P2).
  • BugseeFlutterPlugin.java:59-62: a new SecureEnvironment is still created for each engine attach (P3).
  • secure_region.dart:149-158: the viewport "wholly outside" check still ignores painted overflow (P3).
  • CodeRabbit's open items still apply: the PLAN.md sentence with the duplicated position clause, and the "pixel-ratio change with no relayout" test, which sets devicePixelRatio = 1 twice and so cannot fail.

I am not repeating these.

New finding (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
5 P3 SecureRectangleStore.java:500-507 (same logic in BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.m:505-506) The grace window renews on every change and carries all earlier positions forward. During continuous motion with pulls closer together than 120 ms, the covered area grows to the whole path travelled. It only over-covers, but it does not match the documented "previous set for 120 ms".

Checked and found sound

  • Lock order is consistent on both platforms. The iOS serve lock is taken before the write lock, and nothing takes them the other way round.
  • The pull hook runs before either lock is held on both platforms.
  • Placement conversion is consistent: Android adds position after scale, and the iOS BGSPureScale corner math is right.
  • The Served / version logic never lands on 0 and only moves when the served buffer changes.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Medium. The new finding is over-redaction only. The risk is still the two open P2s in the Dart "is it hidden" heuristics, plus per-frame cost.
  2. Merge recommendation: Same as before. Approve once the TickerMode rule (P2) is fixed or narrowed. The per-frame cost (P2) is best fixed in the same pass. The P3s and the grace-window accumulation can follow.
  3. Most important issues to fix:
    • The TickerMode rule at secure_region.dart:135 (privacy).
    • The per-descendant getTransformTo(null) walk on every frame.
    • The grace-window carry-forward.
  4. Positives:
    • The latest commit makes the transition tests independent of Flutter API differences between the floor and stable.
    • Fail-closed handling and immutable, whole-state swaps remain consistent across both native stores.

Severity: P3 Low (over-redaction; not a leak)

Problem: The grace window is measured from the last change, not from when each rectangle stopped being current. On a change, previous = union(last.current, inGrace(last, now) ? last.previous : NONE) and changedAt = now. Each change therefore renews the window and carries every earlier position forward. The class comment says the previous set is served "for GRACE_MS", and continuousMovementCoversEveryRecentPlace (line 637) asserts the carry-forward ("until a window after the LAST change"), but nothing bounds the total. The iOS store has the same logic (BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.m:505-506, BGSUnion).

Scenario: A secure card widget is scrolled or animated for 2 s while the SDK pulls about every 100 ms. The PR's own runtime check says "~10 Hz", which is below the 120 ms window. Every pull sees a changed target and is still inside the window, so previous gains one more position per pull. At more than 64 rectangles, union collapses the extras to a single bounding box. That box then grows to the bounding box of the whole scroll path. The redaction in the video, and the tap coordinates dropped from the report, cover the entire travel range for as long as the motion lasts and for 120 ms after it. At 2-3 Hz pulls (the PullThrottle doc's figure) the window expires between pulls and nothing accumulates, so how often it shows up depends on the capture rate.

Impact: Only over-covers, so there is no privacy risk. But it is a visible quality problem on exactly the screens that use the feature, and the code does not do what its doc comment says.

Fix: Keep the time each previous rectangle was last current (or the time of the first change in the current motion). Drop previous entries older than graceMs on every snapshot instead of carrying all of them. Alternatively, make previous only the immediately preceding set, which is enough for "a moving region leaves no strip" at one frame of lag. Update continuousMovementCoversEveryRecentPlace to assert the bound and add a long-motion test (e.g. 50 changes 80 ms apart, with count staying small). Mirror the change in the Objective-C store.

…test uses painted overflow; one pass of transforms; grace counted per past set; one Android environment

Re-review of PR #7 after commit d8e4b4e ("Review round 1")

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against 0c951c1.

Earlier findings: all addressed in d8e4b4e

# Earlier finding Status
1 A disabled TickerMode counted as proof a region is hidden Fixed. The rule, tickerEnabled and touch() are removed, and a test pins that a disabled TickerMode stays covered.
2 getTransformTo(null) per descendant per frame Fixed. _paintedRect now composes one applyPaintTransform per child top-down. The cost is linear in descendants.
3 A new SecureEnvironment for each engine attach Fixed. A synchronized process-wide singleton is used.
4 The viewport "wholly outside" check ignored painted overflow Fixed. provablyHidden now takes the overflow-inclusive painted rect and maps it through the inverted viewport transform. A test covers it.
5 The grace window carried every earlier position forward Fixed on both stores. Each past set now has its own untilMs, counted from when that set stopped being current. Expired ones are dropped, and the union is rebuilt from the target plus the live past sets.

I also checked the new grace logic for these cases, and they hold:

  • A set changing to empty still serves the old set for its window.
  • A→B→A dedupes in the union.
  • The version moves when a past set expires.
  • Empty to non-empty adds no past entry.
  • The size of the past list is bounded by the pull rate times the window.

New finding (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
6 P3 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:224-227 The reorder in measureRegion skips the hidden check when _paintedRect returns null or non-finite. A provably hidden region (Offstage or IndexedStack) with a subtree of more than 2000 nodes is then reported as the whole view. It over-covers only.

Smaller notes (not posted inline)

  • Stale comments: the class docs in SecureRectangleStore.java (line 62), BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.h (line 79) and the MAX_RECTANGLES comments still say "the PREVIOUS set". The behaviour is now "each past set for its own window".
  • The test 'a hidden route does not leave a ghost over the next page' (secure_region_test.dart:801) is unchanged, but TickerMode was the signal it used before. It now depends on the Navigator's overlay not painting covered routes, through paintsChild. I could not run it. Please confirm it passes in CI on both the 3.41 floor and stable.
  • CodeRabbit's open nit still applies. The test 'a pixel-ratio change with no relayout republishes nothing' (secure_region_test.dart:865) sets devicePixelRatio = 1 twice, so it cannot fail.
  • Not re-checked: the earlier note that a new isolate with no regions never sends anything, so a previous isolate's regions stay served until the engine detaches. It over-covers only.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low-Medium. The earlier P2s are fixed. The only new issue is over-redaction in an edge case. Nothing I found leaks. The unverified items in the PR description are unchanged: real redaction output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled view on a real device, and CI.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve after confirming CI is green, particularly the hidden-route test. Finding 6 can be fixed in this PR or in a follow-up.
  3. Most important issue to fix: Phase 3a: Pigeon bridge, lifecycle forwarding, identity refinement #6. It is small: run the ancestor-only hidden evidence before measuring the painted rect, and add a test for a hidden, oversized region.
  4. Positives:
    • Every earlier finding got a fix and a test.
    • The grace window now matches its documented behaviour on both platforms, with the same logic mirrored in Objective-C.
    • CLAUDE.md, PLAN.md and the library comment were updated together with the code.
    • The Android environment is now a single shared object, which matches iOS.

Severity: P3 Low (over-redaction; not a leak). New in d8e4b4e.

Problem: provablyHidden used to run before _paintedRect. Now it only runs if (rect != null && _rectFinite(rect) && ...). The ancestor evidence (paintsChild, IndexedStack) does not need rect, but it is now skipped whenever _paintedRect returns null (more than 2000 descendants) or a non-finite rect. Those cases then fall through to _wholeView(view).

Impact: A region that is provably hidden is reported as the whole view. The cost is that the whole screen is redacted in the video and tap coordinates are dropped for as long as that region exists.

Scenario: An app keeps a tab alive with Offstage or IndexedStack, and the tab is wrapped in one BugseeSecureRegion around a large page (over 2000 painted render objects). Before this commit it was dropped as hidden. Now every frame measures it as "too big to follow" and covers the whole view, even while another tab is shown. The same happens when getTransformTo(null) is non-finite for an unpainted ancestor. The new test only covers the too-big case for a visible region, so nothing pins this.

Fix: Split the check. Run the ancestor-only evidence (paintsChild, IndexedStack) first, with no rect, and return null when it holds. Run the viewport test only when rect is finite. Add a test with a hidden region whose subtree has more than 2000 nodes. It should report nothing, not the whole view. This also avoids walking the subtree every frame for a hidden region.

Re-review of PR #7 after commit 34b1ef4 ("Review round 2")

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against d8e4b4e.

Earlier finding: fixed

# Earlier finding Status
6 The hidden check was skipped when _paintedRect returned null or a non-finite rect, so a hidden region with a huge subtree covered the whole view Fixed. measureRegion now calls provablyHidden(box, null) first, before any geometry. painted is nullable, and only the viewport test needs it. The new test pins a hidden, oversized region as reporting nothing.

All of findings 1-6 from the earlier rounds are now addressed in code.

New finding (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
7 P3 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:361 maxRetries limits only the timer. After a failed publish, _published is null, so every frame resends. A native side that keeps failing gets one failed channel message per frame. This is CodeRabbit's open point, and I confirmed it in the code.

Still open (not repeated inline)

  • Test 'a pixel-ratio change with no relayout republishes nothing' (secure_region_test.dart:896) still sets devicePixelRatio = 1 twice, so it cannot fail. Its comment describes the old contract. Delete it or make it a real no-op-rebuild test.
  • Stale comments: SecureRectangleStore.java:62 and BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.h:79 still say "the PREVIOUS set is served". The behaviour is now each past set for its own window.
  • PLAN.md:66 ("a disabled TickerMode is not evidence and never because its layer is detached") is still awkward. CodeRabbit's wording nit still applies.
  • A region with more than 2000 descendants inside a clipping viewport's cache extent is not dropped when it is scrolled out. _paintedRect returns null, so the viewport test never runs and the whole view is covered while it is built. It over-covers only, and is rare.
  • A new isolate that has no regions never sends anything, so a previous isolate's regions stay served until the engine detaches (a debug hot restart). It over-covers only.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Nothing I found leaks pixels. The remaining items over-cover or cost a little extra work. The unverified items in the PR description are unchanged: real redaction output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled view on a real device, and CI.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green. Phase 3b: secure rectangles end to end (stacked on #6) #7, the dead test and the stale comments can be fixed in this PR or in a follow-up.
  3. Most important issues to fix:
  4. Positives:
    • Every earlier finding got a fix and a test.
    • Hidden-region evidence is now checked in order of cost: ancestor checks first, geometry only when needed.
    • Fail-closed handling is consistent on both platforms.

Severity: P3 Low (resource use; confirms CodeRabbit's open point)

Problem: maxRetries only limits the timer retry (line 428). The per-frame path has no limit. After a failure, _send's onError sets _published = null (line 424). _afterFrame re-arms itself every frame while a region exists (line 349). So flush() sees published == null and calls _send again on every frame, and each send increments _sequence.

Impact: With a native side that keeps failing, there is one platform-channel message and one failed Future per frame for as long as frames run. lastError is overwritten each time. The comment at lines 421-423 says a missing native side must be quiet. It is not, while the app animates or scrolls.

Scenario: Run on a platform or embedder with no plugin, or in a host app where the channel is not registered. A MissingPluginException is thrown for each frame once a BugseeSecureRegion is mounted. The _failures > maxRetries condition never stops this.

Fix: Remember the state that failed, and skip resending the same state once _failures > maxRetries. Resume when the measured state changes or a publish succeeds. CodeRabbit's sketch (a _failedState field checked in flush) does this. Add a test: failNext large, pump 20 frames, native.sent.length stays bounded.

Re-review of PR #7 after commits f45d690 and a2db41d (review rounds 3 and 4)

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against 34b1ef4.

Earlier findings: status

Earlier finding Status
#7 Per-frame resend loop to a native side that keeps failing Fixed in f45d690. _failedState plus a guard in flush() stop frame-driven resends once _failures > maxRetries. A changed state is still sent. The new test fails if the guard is removed (30 sends vs. at most 5).
Test that could not fail (pixel-ratio change with no relayout) Removed in a2db41d. The remaining ratio test (3 → 2) covers the real contract.
Stale "previous set" wording Partly fixed. The SecureRectangleStore.java class doc, the .h class comment, CLAUDE.md and PLAN.md are updated. See the nit below.
PLAN.md wording Fixed.
Hot-restart isolate with no regions, and a region with more than 2000 descendants inside a clipping viewport Now documented as known over-covering limits in CLAUDE.md.

New finding (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
8 P3 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:371 After retries are exhausted nothing resends the state, even if the channel recovers. A state that arrives after exhaustion gets one attempt, with no timer. If that attempt fails too, native keeps its stale mask and a new static region is recorded in the clear until its geometry changes. Suggested fix: a capped slow backoff instead of stopping, or give up only on MissingPluginException.

This is the same concern as CodeRabbit's "publication failures can exhaust recovery" note. The fix for #7 introduced it.

Nit (not posted inline)

The constant comments in SecureRectangleStore.java:109,112, BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.m:15,17 and BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.h:104,110 still say "the previous set is served along with a changed one". Behaviour is now each past set for its own window.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The diff since the last review is small and mostly comments, docs and one test swap. The one new issue needs a transport failure that lasts longer than the retry budget before it matters. The unverified items in the PR description are unchanged: real redaction output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled view on a real device, and CI.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green. Phase 3c: report handlers, report proxy core, requestData confirmation (stacked on #7) #8 can be fixed here or in a follow-up. Do it before the widget becomes public in Phase 4.
  3. Most important issues to fix: Phase 3c: report handlers, report proxy core, requestData confirmation (stacked on #7) #8, then the stale constant comments.
  4. Positives:
    • Every finding from rounds 1 to 3 got a fix and a test that fails when the rule is broken.
    • The new retry test pins both properties: bounded sends, and a changed state is still sent.
    • Known limits are written down in CLAUDE.md and PLAN.md instead of left implicit.

Severity: P3 Low (new in f45d690; stale mask, not a crash)

Problem: Once _failures > maxRetries, flush() never resends the failed state again. It only resumes when the measured state changes or an earlier attempt succeeds. The timer is also off (_failures <= maxRetries at line ~441). So the loss is permanent for that state, even if the channel recovers a second later. A state that arrives after exhaustion gets exactly one attempt: if it fails, _failures stays above maxRetries, no timer is set, and the guard blocks the next frame.

Impact: Native keeps the last accepted state. If it was missing a newly appeared or moved region, that region stays unredacted until its geometry changes or the region is removed. The earlier version retried every frame, so it recovered on its own. This version trades that for quiet when the plugin is missing, and loses recovery after a transient failure of 5+ attempts (about 5 s at the default delay).

Scenario: The native handler throws for a few seconds, for example during an engine or activity transition. Five retries fail and the registry gives up. The handler works again. A mounted BugseeSecureRegion with a static position is never republished, so it is recorded in the clear.

Fix: Keep a slow retry after exhaustion instead of stopping: for example back off to 30 s, or exponential with a cap. That is still quiet on a platform with no plugin (a few messages a minute), and it recovers. Alternatively treat MissingPluginException as permanent and give up only for that. Add a test that a failure after exhaustion is retried once the clock advances.

Minor, same commit: the constants comments still say "the previous set is served along with a changed one" (SecureRectangleStore.java:109,112, BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.m:15,17, .h:104,110). Only the class docs were updated for the per-set window.

…and never abandoned; comments follow the per-set grace window

The registry stopped resending a failed state after maxRetries and the retry
timer was off by one, so a transport that recovered after a few seconds left
native with a stale mask (a new static region recorded in the clear until its
geometry changed). Now the retry timer backs off 1 s doubling to a 30 s cap and
never gives up, frames do not resend the state that just failed, and once
maxRetries consecutive failures passed a changed state waits for the timer too
(no per-frame flood). Constant comments in the Java/ObjC stores described the
old previous-set grace.

Re-review of PR #7 after commit 43eafe7 (retry with capped backoff)

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against a2db41d.

Earlier findings: status

Earlier finding Status
#8 Nothing resends the state after the retries are used up Fixed. The timer no longer stops: it backs off 1 s doubling to a 30 s cap and never gives up. _retryDue makes the timer's send bypass the frame guards. Success only resets the count for the newest sequence. A new test covers a 60 s outage followed by recovery.
Stale "previous set" constant comments (SecureRectangleStore.java, BGSFlutterSecureRectangleStore.m and .h) Fixed. A grep for "previous set" finds nothing left in the native sources, CLAUDE.md or PLAN.md.

I walked through these cases in flush() and _send(), and they hold:

  • A frame arriving before the failure is delivered sees _published == state and does not resend.
  • A changed state during the first maxRetries failures is sent at once. _send cancels the pending timer and the next failure arms a longer one.
  • A timer that fires with no region mounted still sends, because _schedule requests a frame.
  • A late failure from an older sequence is ignored.
  • The backoff arithmetic is bounded (doublings capped at 20, then capped by maxRetryDelay).
  • dispose() stops new timers.

New finding (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
9 P3 lib/src/secure/secure_region.dart:388 Once _failures > maxRetries, every changed state waits for the retry timer, up to 30 s. If the transport recovers during that time, a newly appeared region is recorded in the clear until the timer fires. f45d690 sent a changed state at once. Suggested fix: a leading-edge throttle of about 1 s per send, so a dead transport is still not flooded.

Still open from earlier rounds

  • The first-frame exposure of a newly appearing region (documented in CLAUDE.md).
  • CI is unproven. The backoff test has tight fake-time steps, so please confirm it is stable on the 3.41 floor and on stable.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Nothing I found leaks pixels in normal operation. The one new item needs a transport outage of more than about 30 s followed by a recovery, and then a new region appearing during the next retry wait.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green. Phase 4a: options, launch, stop and status (first public API) #9 can be fixed here or in a follow-up. Do it before the widget becomes public in Phase 4.
  3. Most important issue to fix: Phase 4a: options, launch, stop and status (first public API) #9, the held changed state after the retries are used up.
  4. Positives:
    • The retry no longer gives up, and a transport that is down for good costs one message per 30 s.
    • The new tests pin the backoff steps, the long-outage recovery, the boundary at exactly maxRetries, and the held changed state.
    • The stale comments are gone from all three native files, and CLAUDE.md records the new retry contract.

Severity: P3 Low (new in 43eafe7; privacy window after a transport recovery, not a crash)

Problem: Once _failures > maxRetries and a timer is pending, every changed state is held for that timer, whatever the state is. After 5 failures the timer is 16 s, then 30 s (_backoff, capped at maxRetryDelay). Nothing tells flush() that the transport has come back. A changed state is the only kind that can add a region, so this holds back exactly the state that matters. f45d690 sent a changed state at once.

Impact: A new or moved region reaches native up to 30 s after it is measured, with no failed attempt to show for it. During that time it is recorded in the clear. The wait is much longer than the first-frame exposure already listed in CLAUDE.md, and it is not on that list.

Scenario:

  1. The native handler throws for about 35 s, for example during an engine or activity transition. Five failures are used up and the timer is now 30 s.
  2. The handler recovers at t=36 s.
  3. At t=37 s the user opens a screen with a BugseeSecureRegion. The state changes, _retry != null and _failures > maxRetries, so flush() returns.
  4. The region is sent when the timer fires, up to 30 s later.

Fix: Do not hold a changed state for the whole backoff. Send it at once if the last attempt was at least about 1 s ago (a leading-edge throttle on _send). A changed state then costs at most one message per second on a dead transport, and still never one per frame. A missing plugin then adds at most one message per second while regions move, and nothing while the screen is still. Alternatively, hold only a state that is not a superset of what native holds, so removals wait and additions go out at once. Add a test: exhaust the retries, set failNext = 0, change the state, and expect a send within about 1 s, not 30 s.

The timing of the retries back off 1x, 2x, 4x test is tight. I could not run it here (no flutter in the sandbox), so please confirm it is stable in CI on both the 3.41 floor and stable.

…s at most retryDelay, not the whole backoff (Claude review)

After maxRetries failures every changed state was held for the retry timer
(up to 30 s), so a region that appeared once the transport had recovered was
recorded in the clear until the timer fired. A changed state now goes out once
retryDelay has passed since the last attempt (the timer is brought forward to
that instant), so a dead transport still sees at most one message per second,
never one per frame. The registry takes an injectable clock for the tests.

Re-review of PR #7 after commit 151a6a8 (changed state after retries wait at most retryDelay)

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against 43eafe7. That diff touches secure_region.dart, secure_region_test.dart and .claude/CLAUDE.md.

Earlier finding: fixed

# Earlier finding Status
9 Once _failures > maxRetries, a changed state waited for the whole backoff (up to 30 s), so a region that appeared after the transport recovered stayed in the clear Fixed. flush() now sends a changed state at once if at least retryDelay has passed since _lastSend. Otherwise _expedite(wait) moves the pending timer forward to the end of that throttle.

I traced these cases through flush(), _send(), _armRetry() and _expedite(), and they hold:

  • Expedite never delays anything. When it runs, the pending timer is the backoff timer, which is at least retryDelay. It was armed no earlier than _lastSend. So its remaining time is at least the computed wait, and replacing it can only bring it forward.
  • A timer that was brought forward sends the latest state. It sets _retryDue, so the send bypasses the frame guards and uses the freshest measurement.
  • The same failed state does not resend per frame. sameAsFailed returns before the throttle, and the backoff timer still resends it.
  • A moving region on a dead transport sends at most about one message per retryDelay. Each send resets _lastSend and _expedited, and the next failure arms a longer timer. The test caps this at 11 sends in about 1 s.
  • The first maxRetries failures are not throttled. A changed state is sent at once. That is bounded, because each failed send increments _failures and the first few failures use the throttle-free path.
  • Out-of-order failures are ignored. The sequence != _sequence guard still ignores the failure of an older attempt.
  • A null retryDelay cannot reach the !. retryDelay! is only reached when _retry != null, and a timer is armed only when retryDelay is non-null.
  • Success resets the count. _failures and _failedState clear on success of the newest sequence.

The tests pin the behaviour:

  • "a state that changes after the retries are used up…" pins sending within retryDelay after a 20 s outage.
  • "changed states on a transport that is known bad…" pins the cap of about one send per retryDelay and that the latest state wins after recovery. It would fail if the hold-for-the-timer behaviour came back.
  • The fake clock is injected consistently with the pumps, which avoids the timing fragility I flagged last round.

No new findings.

Still open (not blocking)

  • The first-frame exposure of a newly appearing region is documented in CLAUDE.md and PLAN.md.
  • CI is unproven. Please confirm the timing-sensitive retry tests are stable on both the 3.41 floor and stable.
  • Items the PR description lists as NOT verified: real redacted output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled view on a real device, and Android multi-window.
  • CodeRabbit's nit on CLAUDE.md line 26 ("fail-closed", "wholly outside of") is wording only.
  • The working tree has an uncommitted change to .claude/CLAUDE.md. Check whether it is meant to be part of the PR.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Nothing I found leaks pixels in normal operation. Every finding from the earlier rounds has been addressed in code, with a test.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green. Rerun the Gradle and xcodebuild jobs before merging, since the earlier rounds touched the native stores.
  3. Most important things left:
    • Get CI green on both Flutter versions.
    • Do the device checks the PR lists as not verified, in particular a scaled Flutter view and multi-window, before the widget becomes public in Phase 4.
  4. Positives:
    • The retry design is now consistent. It has a bounded send rate, never gives up, and still delivers a region that appears right after recovery.
    • The retry design is documented in the field docs and in CLAUDE.md, and the tests cover its edges.
    • The CLAUDE.md rule text matches the code (a changed state goes out once retryDelay has passed since the last attempt).

Mark the store pending before PullThrottle can suppress the pull.

SecureRectangleStore.pull snapshots immediately after store.setPullHook(PULLS::request) returns. PullThrottle.request skips its task for less than 100 ms, so a suppressed pull can serve the old placement after the view moves. serve only returns whole-display coverage for an already-known invalid placement; it does not detect this pending refresh. Version 0 only forces comparison and does not correct stale coordinates. Mark the store pending before calling PULLS.request, return a whole-display rectangle for every pending pull, and clear the pending state only after refreshPlacements completes.

…r answers covers the placed views whole (CodeRabbit)

The pull asks the main thread for a refresh and answers from the last completed
one. A refresh asked for and not completed for 1 s (a stuck main thread) now
makes every placed view serve the whole display until one completes, tracked
from the oldest unanswered request so the 100 ms throttle cannot hide it and
independent of the pull rate. Marking every pull pending was rejected: the
refresh is asynchronous, so it would blank the display on every pull. Wording
nits in CLAUDE.md/PLAN.md/secure_region.dart.

Re-review of PR #7 after commits 703a859 and a52371a

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against 151a6a8.

What changed

  • 703a859: merge of the 3a base. This brings in the LifecycleHub and BGSFlutterLifecycleHub.h changes and the lifecycle-delivery doc rewording. I did not review it in depth.
  • a52371a: CodeRabbit's last open point, a placement refresh that the main thread never answers.
    • pull() records when the oldest unanswered refresh was asked for.
    • refreshPlacements() calls refreshCompleted() in a finally block.
    • serve() covers every placed view whole once a refresh has been pending for more than REFRESH_STALE_MS (1 s).
  • Docs and comment wording (CLAUDE.md, PLAN.md, secure_region.dart): CodeRabbit's "off-screen" and "outside of" nits.

Earlier findings: status

  • Findings 1-9 were fixed in earlier rounds, and 151a6a8 fixed Phase 4a: options, launch, stop and status (first public API) #9. I did not recheck them against this diff.
  • CodeRabbit's outside-diff point (a suppressed PullThrottle request leaves a stale placement) is addressed in design. The stuck-main-thread case now fails closed. A refresh asked for and not answered within 1 s covers the display.
  • The CLAUDE.md wording nits are fixed.

New finding (posted inline)

# Sev Where Summary
10 P3 SecureRectangleStore.java:495 The pending timestamp is also set by pulls whose request PullThrottle drops, so a pull after a gap of more than 1 s serves the whole display although the main thread is healthy.

Details are in the inline comment. A pull under 100 ms after the previous one sets the pending flag but posts no task. If the SDK then pulls again more than 1 s later, serve runs before the freshly posted task can finish, so it sees a flag older than REFRESH_STALE_MS. It over-covers only, and shows as a one-pull full-screen redaction. The new tests do not cover this, because their hook always completes and never goes through the real throttle.

Checked and found sound

  • refreshCompleted() runs in a finally, so an exception in a placement refresh cannot leave the flag set.
  • ABSENT placements are skipped before the stuck check, but Android never produces ABSENT (a grep finds only the definition and the serve check). A stale "off screen" cannot leak here.
  • The stuck check only applies when a pull hook is installed, so snapshot() without a hook is unaffected. A test covers it.
  • compareAndSet(NO_REFRESH_PENDING, …) keeps the oldest request time, so a truly stuck main thread is not hidden by later pulls.
  • A completion that lands between two pulls can mark a slightly newer pull as fresh. The staleness is bounded by the 100 ms throttle plus one refresh, matching the documented "up to about one pull".

Still open (not blocking)

  • CI is unproven. Please confirm the timing-sensitive Dart retry tests are stable on both the 3.41 floor and stable, and rerun the Gradle and xcodebuild jobs, since the Android store changed again.
  • The items the PR lists as NOT verified are unchanged: real redacted output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled view on a real device, and Android multi-window.
  • The working tree still has an uncommitted change to .claude/CLAUDE.md at the start of this run. The pushed CLAUDE.md already has these edits, so check that nothing is left uncommitted.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Nothing I found leaks pixels. Finding 10 is a brief over-redaction in an uncommon timing pattern.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green. Phase 4b: the rest of the public facade (attributes, identity, events, breadcrumbs, notify, blackout, reports, secure view) #10 can be fixed here or in a follow-up. The fix is small: set the pending flag only when the throttle actually posts a task.
  3. Most important thing to fix: Phase 4b: the rest of the public facade (attributes, identity, events, breadcrumbs, notify, blackout, reports, secure view) #10.
  4. Positives:
    • The stuck-refresh guard fails closed and is independent of the pull rate.
    • The finally makes it robust to exceptions.
    • Three new tests pin the stale cover, the fresh refresh and the no-hook case.
    • CLAUDE.md documents the new rule, including why marking every pull as pending would blank the display.
      · Branch: feat/phase-3b-secure-rects

Severity: P3 Low (new in a52371a; over-redaction, not a leak)

Problem: refreshPendingSince is set on every pull when none is pending, even when PullThrottle.request() then drops the request (under 100 ms since the last one). A suppressed pull therefore leaves "pending" set with no task in flight. Nothing clears it until a later pull posts a task and that task completes. The stuck check in serve runs right after the hook, before that new task can finish, and it measures from the old timestamp.

Scenario:

  1. t=0: pull, request posted, completes, refreshCompleted() clears the flag.
  2. t=50 ms: second pull (two displays pulled together, or a ~10 Hz capture with jitter). The flag is set to 50, and the throttle drops the request.
  3. The SDK then goes quiet for more than 1 s (static screen, backgrounded).
  4. t=2000 ms: the next pull posts a task, but snapshot runs on the capture thread first. 2000 - 50 > REFRESH_STALE_MS, so refreshStuck is true and the whole display is served, although the main thread is healthy.

The version moves twice (to the whole display, then back). That can show as a one-off full-screen redaction frame, and taps are dropped from the report for it.

Impact: Only over-covers, but it is the kind of blank frame the PR text says it avoids ("marking every pull as pending would blank the display on every pull"). The new tests do not catch it: aRefreshThatCompletesEachTimeNeverCovers… uses a hook that always completes, so the real PullThrottle suppression path is never exercised together with the store.

Fix: Count only requests that were actually handed to the executor, and only while a task is in flight. For example, make PullThrottle.request() return whether it posted, and set refreshPendingSince only in that case. A suppressed pull with nothing in flight is then at most about 100 ms stale, which is the documented bound. Add a test: pull, complete, pull again 50 ms later with a throttle that suppresses, advance more than REFRESH_STALE_MS, and pull again with a hook that has not completed yet. Expect the placed rectangle, not the whole display.

SecureRegionRegistry retries the same failed state after backoff. The phrase “published only when the set changed” can be read as forbidding those retries. State that publication occurs on changes and retries after failed publishes.

Specify the conditions for clipping-based removal.

The text lists paintsChild and “a clipping viewport” without stating the required conditions. A region should be dropped only when an ancestor does not paint it, an IndexedStack shows another child, or the region and all its paint lie wholly outside a clipping viewport. Keep this wording aligned with .claude/CLAUDE.md.

…in thread counts as a refresh in flight; PLAN.md wording (Claude, CodeRabbit)

A pull dropped by the 100 ms throttle left 'pending' set with no task in flight,
so a later pull after a quiet second could blank the display although the main
thread was healthy. The plugin's executor now marks the request, so only a
posted one counts. PLAN.md: retries after a failed publish, and the exact
conditions for dropping a region.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Limit the “never 0” rule to displays with a served snapshot.

[0, 0] is the documented unknown-display response, so its version field is 0. The adjacent statement that versions are “never 0” is contradictory. State that non-zero versions apply only to displays with a served snapshot, and reserve version 0 for unknown displays.

Suggested wording
- Versions are derived from what is served (so a density
- or position change moves them with no write), per display, never 0; a display that never had a rectangle
- serves `[0, 0]` (unknown).
+ For displays with a served snapshot, versions are derived from what is served (so a density

+ for a display that never had a rectangle, which serves `[0, 0]` (unknown).

Re-review of PR #7 after commits 977f0d4, 080d30b and the a38ef60 merge

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the code and the diff against a52371a. That diff touches BugseeFlutterPlugin.java, SecureRectangleStore.java, SecureRectangleStoreTest.java, LifecycleHub.java, BGSFlutterLifecycleHub.h and PLAN.md.

Earlier finding: fixed

# Earlier finding Status
10 A pull whose request PullThrottle dropped still set "refresh pending", so a pull after a gap of more than 1 s served the whole display on a healthy main thread Fixed. pull() no longer sets the flag. The plugin's executor lambda calls store.refreshRequested() only for a task it is about to post to the main thread, and refreshCompleted() still runs in a finally.

I checked these cases against the new code:

  • Dropped pull: nothing is pending, so a pull 2 s later posts a task and refreshRequested() stamps "now" before serve runs. The age is 0 and the rectangle is served, not the whole display.
  • Main thread not answering: the oldest request stays stamped (compareAndSet from "none"), so REFRESH_STALE_MS still fires and covers the whole display.
  • Order inside the executor: refreshRequested() runs before MAIN.post(task). The task cannot complete and clear the flag before it is set.
  • Failed post: if MAIN.post returned false, the flag would stay set and the display would be covered after 1 s. That fails closed and only happens when the main looper is gone.
  • Test: aPullTheThrottleDroppedLeavesNothingPending uses the real PullThrottle with the store's hook. It would fail if the flag were set on dropped pulls again. The other two tests were adjusted to call refreshRequested() the way the plugin does.

CodeRabbit's outside-diff point (a suppressed pull serving a stale placement) is covered by this design. Pulls the throttle drops are at most about 100 ms stale, and a refresh that is asked for and not answered within 1 s covers the display.

No new findings.

Merge commit

a38ef60 brings in the 3a doc wording about in-flight events returning to the buffer only when the last receiver detaches. I did not review the lifecycle changes in depth.

Nits (not blocking)

  • PLAN.md:49 has a duplicated word: "flushes report events still in its own buffer and and, when the final receiver detaches, …".
  • The working tree still showed an uncommitted change to .claude/CLAUDE.md when this run started. Check that it belongs in the PR or is dropped.

Still open from the PR description (not blocking)

  • CI is unproven. Please confirm the timing-sensitive Dart retry tests are stable on both the 3.41 floor and stable. Rerun the Gradle and xcodebuild jobs, since the Android store changed again.
  • Items listed as NOT verified: real redacted output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled Flutter view on a real device, and Android multi-window.
  • Known over-covering limits recorded in CLAUDE.md are unchanged (first-frame exposure of a new region, hot-restart isolate with no regions).

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Nothing I found leaks pixels. All earlier findings (1-10) are fixed in code, each with a test.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green on both Flutter versions and the native jobs.
  3. Most important things left:
    • Green CI, including the Gradle and xcodebuild jobs.
    • The device checks listed as not verified, before the widget becomes public in Phase 4.
  4. Positives:
    • The stuck-refresh guard now counts only requests that were actually posted, so it fails closed without blanking the display on a healthy main thread.
    • The new test goes through the real PullThrottle, which closes the gap the earlier tests had.
    • Docs (PLAN.md, CLAUDE.md, class comments) follow the code.

Re-review of PR #7 after b55d549 and the 7115800 merge

I did not run any tests or tools. The sandbox has no flutter, dart, Gradle or Xcode. Everything below comes from reading the diff against 977f0d4, the last commit I reviewed in depth.

What changed

  • b55d549: PLAN.md wording only. It fixes the doubled "and and" I flagged last round.
  • 7115800: merge of the 3a base. It brings in comment-only changes in LifecycleHub.java and BGSFlutterLifecycleHub.h (events in flight go back to the buffer only when the LAST receiver detaches) and the matching PLAN.md sentence.

No production code changed in either commit. The Dart registry, the Android and iOS stores, the placement code and the tests are identical to the version I reviewed last round.

Earlier findings

All earlier findings (1-10) were fixed in earlier rounds, each with a test, and nothing in these commits reopens them. The PLAN.md duplicated-word nit is now fixed.

New findings

None.

Nits (not blocking)

  • .claude/CLAUDE.md:23 still says "Events in flight to a detached receiver go back to the FRONT of the buffer". The 3a docs, LifecycleHub.java, BGSFlutterLifecycleHub.h and PLAN.md now say "the LAST receiver that detaches". Update it so the rule text matches. It is wording only.
  • In the checkout this run started from, .claude/CLAUDE.md had an uncommitted change that is not on the PR branch. It replaces the long "Secure rectangles" and "Secure rectangle limits" rules with two short lines (the secure-rect unit rule and the lifecycle-proof rule). This is the same stray change I saw in earlier runs. If it is not intended, drop it. The pushed file is the right one: it holds the retry contract, the stuck-refresh rule, and the documented limits. I did not touch or push anything.

Still open from the PR description (not blocking)

  • CI is unproven. Please confirm the timing-sensitive Dart retry tests are stable on both the 3.41 floor and stable. Rerun the Gradle and xcodebuild jobs, since the Android store changed in 977f0d4.
  • Listed as NOT verified: real redacted output, iOS landscape and iPad multitasking, a scaled Flutter view on a real device, and Android multi-window.
  • Known over-covering limits are recorded in CLAUDE.md and unchanged: first-frame exposure of a new region, a hot-restarted isolate with no regions, and a region with more than 2000 descendants inside a clipping viewport.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. Nothing I found leaks pixels. The only changes since the last review are docs and comments.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green on both Flutter versions and the native jobs. Do the device checks listed as not verified before the widget becomes public in Phase 4.
  3. Most important things left:
    • Green CI, including the Gradle and xcodebuild jobs.
    • The device checks above.
    • The one-word CLAUDE.md wording fix ("LAST receiver").
  4. Positives:
    • Every finding from every round got a fix and a test that fails when the rule is broken.
    • Docs, PLAN.md and CLAUDE.md follow the code.
    • Fail-closed handling and whole-state swaps are consistent on both platforms.
