Improve MySQL 8.4 support in the MySQL parser - #613
This PR brings the mysql-parser package closer to MySQL. Rejected queries in the MySQL 8.4 corpus drop from 166 to 43. The remaining 43 have several statements in one string, which MySQL also rejects without its multi-statement client flag.

All rows now get the same result on MySQL 8.4.10 in their SQL modes, except for 26 SHOW PARSE_TREE queries that only debug builds accept.
Lexer
The lexer now matches MySQL in five more cases:
Dollar-quoted text: From MySQL 8.1, $$ ... $$ and $tag$ ... $tag$ are read as text. Routine bodies in languages like JavaScript use them. This fixes 102 queries.
Comments in skipped version comments: A version comment that doesn't apply can contain another comment, as in /*!99999 /* */ */. This fixes 1 query.
Unterminated comments: These are now rejected (Bug#28779). Before, WHERE a = 7 OR 1=1/*' AND b = 'c' parsed without its last condition.
\N: This is now rejected from MySQL 8.0.1, which removed it as a synonym for NULL.
Parameter markers:? directly before a name or keyword is now rejected, so SELECT ?a and SELECT ?FROM t no longer parse.
Lexing is also faster, because ASCII identifiers now skip the UTF-8 loop. With the tracing JIT on PHP 8.5, lexing the corpus is about 14% faster, and lexing and parsing together are about 5% faster. Without the JIT, the speed doesn't change measurably.
Query corpus
The corpus now follows how the MySQL tests run each query:
SQL modes: MySQL reads a query according to its session's SQL modes, but the test read every query in the default modes. The corpus now stores the modes that affect the lexer in a second CSV column, with a row for each set of modes a query runs in. This fixes 20 queries that need ANSI_QUOTES or PIPES_AS_CONCAT, and adds 243 rows.
--error: This now applies only to the next command, as in mysqltest. Before, --error followed by --exec also skipped the query after it. This adds 53 rows.
error X;: This form now works like --error. This removes 2 rows that are expected to fail.
Behavior changes
These affect anyone using the package, so they matter for versioning:
Rejected queries: Unterminated comments, \N from MySQL 8.0.1, and ? directly before a name or keyword no longer parse.
Dollar quotes: From MySQL 8.1, $a$b$a$ is a single WP_MySQL_Lexer::DOLLAR_QUOTED_STRING_SYM token instead of an identifier, and unterminated text like $a$b is rejected.
Corpus format:mysql-latest.csv has an optional second column for SQL modes.
Not in this PR
These known gaps stay as they are:
The driver: The lexer in mysql-on-sqlite still accepts unterminated comments and reads every ? as a parameter marker. Changing that would make queries fail that run today, so it needs its own versioning decision.
MySQL's other syntax checks: The parser only applies MySQL's grammar rules, not the checks MySQL runs in code while parsing, so it accepts statements like COMMIT AND CHAIN RELEASE.
? outside prepared statements: MySQL allows it only when preparing a statement, but SELECT ? always parses here.
Queries with a real --error: These stay out of the corpus. Adding them will be a separate PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for MySQL 8.1+ dollar-quoted strings, including routine bodies, with their contents returned without escape processing.
Query-corpus records can include relevant SQL modes, so compatibility checks account for lexer settings used by each query.
Bug Fixes
Improved recognition of parameter markers and version-specific \N values.
Improved comment handling, including nested comments and unterminated or malformed comments; invalid input is rejected in these cases.
The MySQL parser now recognizes version-gated dollar-quoted strings and changes handling of parameter markers, comments, and \N. Query-corpus tooling tracks lexer-relevant SQL modes per mysqltest connection, records modes with queries, and passes those modes to corpus validation and benchmarking.
The lexer recognizes dollar-quoted strings starting with MySQL 8.1 and returns their contents without delimiters. It also changes parameter-marker, \N, and comment handling. Tests cover tokenization and parser behavior.
SQL-mode tracking and corpus generation packages/mysql-parser/tools/class-query-corpus-sql-modes.php, packages/mysql-parser/tools/generate-query-corpus.php, packages/mysql-parser/README.md, packages/mysql-parser/tests/WP_MySQL_Query_Corpus_SQL_Modes_Tests.php
The new tracker evaluates lexer-relevant modes across mysqltest connections. The corpus generator records queries with their distinct mode sets and writes nonempty mode sets in a second CSV column.
Corpus validation and benchmarking packages/mysql-parser/tests/WP_MySQL_Server_Suite_Parser_Tests.php, packages/mysql-parser/tests/benchmark.php
Corpus validation reads full CSV records and passes each query’s modes to the lexer. The benchmark also supplies query modes and MySQL 8.4.10 to the lexer.

WordPress/sqlite-database-integration#574: The lexer changes reject unterminated comments and malformed dollar-quoted strings. The issue requests consistent rejection of malformed input, although its description also covers incomplete token lists and parser warnings.
The parser changes are mergeable with owner awareness that uncommon SQL-mode tracking patterns may label corpus queries incorrectly. The previously reported tracker limitations remain open.

A version comment that doesn't apply to the MySQL version can contain other
comments, one level deep. The lexer stopped at the first closing marker, so
in "SELECT 1 /*!99999 /* */ */" the rest became "*" and "/", which failed
one query in the corpus.
https://github.com/mysql/mysql-server/blob/mysql-8.4.10/sql/sql_lex.cc#L1313
MySQL reads a query according to the SQL modes of its session, and test files
select these modes, but the corpus test read every query in the default modes.
So 20 queries failed that MySQL accepts in their modes, and 31 that passed got
different tokens than in MySQL.
The extractor now follows SET statements and connections to find the modes
that affect the lexer, and stores them in a second CSV column. A query that
runs in several sets of modes has a row for each, which adds 243 rows. The
corpus test and the benchmark pass the modes to the lexer.
Every row now gets the same result on MySQL 8.4.10 in its modes, except for 26
SHOW PARSE_TREE queries that only debug builds of MySQL accept.
The comment listed unsupported statements and session-dependent or lexer edge
cases, and pointed to the README, which doesn't cover them. The lexer and the
corpus now handle those, and the remaining queries are multi-statement input.
"error X;" works like "--error X" in mysqltest, but the extractor handled it as
any other command, so the query after it stayed in the corpus even though it's
expected to fail. This removes 2 queries, which both parse.
Nearly all identifiers are ASCII, but each one entered the UTF-8 loop and left
it on the first pass. The loop now runs only when the byte after the ASCII
sequence can start a multibyte character. The accepted input doesn't change.
With the tracing JIT on PHP 8.5, this makes lexing the corpus about 14% faster,
and lexing and parsing about 5% faster. Without the JIT, the speed doesn't
change measurably.
MySQL treats "?" as a parameter marker only if the next byte can't be part of an
identifier, so "SELECT ?a" and "SELECT ?FROM t" are syntax errors. The lexer
returned a marker for every "?", so these parsed.
The result now matches MySQL 8.4.10, 8.0.46, and 5.7.44 for every byte after "?"
in several positions, so the rule isn't version-gated. The query corpus can't
show this, because these forms appear only inside PREPARE strings.

CodeRabbit nitpick on the pull check in WP_MySQL_Lexer_Tests.php: added the token ID comparison. The end-marker part is not needed, because test_tokenize_valid_input already covers it.

This PR adds the queries that MySQL tests expect to fail to the
`mysql-parser` query corpus, and fixes four extractor bugs that lost
queries. The corpus test now checks both directions: **the parser must
reject a query marked as a syntax error, and accept any other row.**
| | Trunk | This PR |
|---|---:|---:|
| Corpus rows | 69,370 | 78,156 |
| Rows marked as syntax errors | 0 | 848 |
| Pinned failures | 43 | 145 |
## Queries that are expected to fail
The extractor now keeps the queries after `--error` and `error X;`. Most
of them parse, because errors like a missing table come after parsing. A
third CSV column holds `syntax_error` for the queries that the parser
should reject:
- **Marked by their tests:** Every occurrence of the query allows only a
syntax error (`ER_PARSE_ERROR` or `1064`).
- **Marked by name:** The extractor lists 18 queries whose tests don't
show their syntax error, because MySQL reports a semantic error first or
the test also allows another error.
These queries stay regular rows, without the marker:
- **`ER_SYNTAX_ERROR` (1149):** MySQL raises this from semantic checks
on queries that parse.
- **`PREPARE` with text or a variable:** The error is in the text, which
isn't in the corpus.
- **Three test files:** In `ctype_latin1.test`, `debug_sync.test`, and
`trigger-compat-debug.test`, the error doesn't come from the query's
syntax.
- **`--error` lists with `0` or `S00000`:** The query may succeed.
The benchmark skips marked rows, because it measures queries that should
parse.
## Extractor fixes
Four older bugs in the extractor lost 837 rows:
- **`--delimiter |` (481 rows):** The extractor read the next statement
as part of the delimiter and lost the rest of the file.
- **Indented commands and comments (347 rows):** An indented `--echo` or
`# comment` took in the next statement, and both were dropped.
- **A delimiter that starts with a quote (6 rows):** The extractor never
found `'abcd'` in `multi_statement.test`, so it lost the rest of that
file.
- **`--query` lines (3 rows):** The extractor skipped these like any
other `--` command. Two of them expect a syntax error and have an
unterminated quote, which no other marked row has.
## Remaining failures
`tests/data/corpus-failures.csv` pins the 145 rows that fail the test:
- **46 regular rows that the parser rejects:** These have several
statements in one string, which MySQL also rejects without its
multi-statement client flag. Parsing them needs a new parser API.
- **97 marked rows that the parser accepts:** MySQL rejects these with
checks that run while parsing, like the one for `COMMIT AND CHAIN
RELEASE`. Rejecting them here would need a separate pass over the AST.
- **2 marked rows that the parser accepts:** `select ?` and `select ?
from t1` use `?`, which MySQL allows only when preparing.
Every row was also compared with MySQL 8.4.10, using `mysqli::prepare`
so that nothing runs. The only other differences are 28 `SHOW
PARSE_TREE` rows that only debug builds accept, and the 15 marked rows
where MySQL reports a semantic error first.
Follow-up to #613.
