Literal defaults on BINARY and VARBINARY columns are stored as written and then treated as text, which breaks them in two ways:
Exports don't import.SHOW CREATE TABLE turns x'00…' into the string 'x''00…''', and MySQL and MariaDB reject it with Invalid default value. A shorter value can load but then stores the text 0xDEADBEEF rather than those bytes. This is blocking a WordPress Studio user from pushing a site with Wordfence tables.
Inserts fail. An insert that omits such a column fails with cannot store TEXT value in BLOB column, whatever form the default takes, including '' and '\0…'. See the comment on #551.
This change handles these defaults as bytes, following the approach suggested on #551.
Defaults are read from the parsed literal, so the text '0x41' stays distinct from the hex literal 0x41, and stored in hex as 0x41, like MySQL's INFORMATION_SCHEMA.
They are written to SQLite as blobs, so inserts work.
SHOW CREATE TABLE matches MySQL: a quoted string such as '\0\0' for valid UTF-8, and 0xDEADBEEF otherwise.
Rebuilding missing table metadata reads these defaults back as the same bytes.
Existing tables are migrated when the driver is upgraded. Older versions stored these defaults as written (x'…', 0x…, b'…', 0b…, text and raw bytes), and they gave the SQLite tables text defaults. The upgrade stores these defaults in hex and rebuilds the affected tables, including tables with binary expression defaults, so their exports and inserts work.
Three neighbouring bugs are fixed as well, since they'd otherwise undermine this one:
Charset prefixes:_binary'abc' and N'abc' kept their prefix in the default, on every column type. With binary defaults now working, inserts would have silently stored _binaryabc. MySQL stores abc, and now so does the driver.
National strings:N'abc' in a query failed with no such column: N or a syntax error. It now works like 'abc', and its column is named abc, as in MySQL.
Generated defaults:DEFAULT ('abc') on a BINARY, VARBINARY or BLOB column failed on insert with the same cannot store TEXT value in BLOB column error. These are now cast to a blob.
This only covers defaults on binary columns and these cases, so it's related to #551 but doesn't close it.
Limitations
Older stored text: a text default stored by an older version that looks like a literal, such as x'41', can't be told apart from the hex literal, so the migration reads it as hex.
Existing rows: the migration doesn't change them. Only the unsafe mode for SQLite < 3.37, which doesn't check types, can have rows that got the old text defaults.
Migration timing: the migration runs when the driver version changes. A build of this branch before the next version bump handles old defaults as before.
BINARY padding: defaults aren't padded to the column length, which matches how the driver stores other BINARY values. MySQL shows 'A\0\0\0' for BINARY(4) DEFAULT 'A' where this shows 'A', and the padding is applied when that's imported into MySQL.
Zero bytes:INFORMATION_SCHEMA keeps the full value, while MySQL cuts it at the first zero byte, such as 0x41 for 'A\0' and 0x for '\0\0'.
API changes
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS and SHOW COLUMNS now report these defaults in hex.
WP_SQLite_Information_Schema_Builder gains a public static get_binary_default_bytes(), which the migration uses to read the forms older versions stored.
WP_MySQL_Token::get_value() now unquotes NCHAR_TEXT tokens, in both mysql-on-sqlite and mysql-parser.
Testing
Added tests for each literal form, ALTER COLUMN … SET DEFAULT, the migration of stored forms from older versions, metadata recovery, charset prefixes, national strings and generated defaults.
I compared the expected output with real MySQL 8.4 and MariaDB 10.11, and loaded the patched SHOW CREATE TABLE output into both. MariaDB also needed the utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci collation swapped, which is a separate known issue. Default bytes were exact on both.
With an earlier version of this change, which read the old forms directly instead of migrating them, real Wordfence 9.0.2 tables created with hex defaults by the old driver exported correctly end to end through WordPress Studio. The full dump restored on both servers.
INSERT … VALUES (…, DEFAULT) fails with a syntax error for every column type on trunk, including INT. That's separate, so it isn't covered here. So is DEFAULT (_utf8mb4'abc'), the form MySQL 8 prints for expression defaults, which fails at CREATE TABLE with a syntax error for every string column type I tried, on trunk too.
Improved handling of binary-column defaults, including hexadecimal, bit-pattern, and expression-based defaults. Values display consistently in table definitions and column metadata.
Binary defaults with valid UTF-8 bytes display as text; other byte values remain in hexadecimal. Defaults from older versions are handled correctly, and affected existing databases are updated.
National string literals are decoded consistently in queries and defaults, including when their contents resemble SQL syntax.
Tests

Token value extraction removes national string prefixes and applies existing unquoting rules. SQLite translation handles national string tokens. Information-schema value extraction skips charset introducers. Tests cover token parsing, translation, constraints, comparisons, result-column names, and PDO quoting.
Binary and varbinary defaults are converted to bytes and normalized as uppercase 0x hex, except empty defaults. Tests cover hex, bit, text, numeric, boolean, and generated defaults.
Format binary defaults for SQLite and MySQL packages/mysql-on-sqlite/src/sqlite/class-wp-mysql-on-sqlite.php, packages/mysql-on-sqlite/src/sqlite/class-wp-sqlite-information-schema-reconstructor.php, packages/mysql-on-sqlite/tests/WP_MySQL_On_SQLite_Tests.php, packages/mysql-on-sqlite/tests/WP_SQLite_Information_Schema_Reconstructor_Tests.php
Generated defaults for BLOB columns are cast to BLOB. Migrated binary defaults are formatted for SQLite and MySQL output. BLOB defaults are escaped during information-schema reconstruction, including defaults expressed as casts. Tests check displayed defaults, inserted values, and reconstructed definitions.
Configuration migrates binary defaults saved at version 3.1.2 or earlier. A shared helper recreates tables and applies replacement defaults. Tests cover migration output, existing rows, current-version tables, repeat configuration, and version selection.
WordPress/sqlite-database-integration#551: This PR converts BINARY and VARBINARY literal defaults to bytes and reconstructs related BLOB defaults. Other types and cases remain unaddressed.
WordPress/sqlite-database-integration#572: This PR handles BLOB-cast defaults during reconstruction. Shared value conversion for INSERT, UPDATE, and other table-rebuild cases remains outside this PR.

Cast generated binary defaults to BLOB.
A VARBINARY column with DEFAULT ('abc') takes this expression path, bypassing the new BLOB formatter. An insert that omits the column then fails because the SQLite default evaluates to TEXT in a STRICT BLOB column. Cast the translated expression to BLOB for binary columns. (sqlite.org)

Preserve ambiguous legacy text defaults.
get_binary_default_bytes() decodes every stored 0x... or x'...' value as a binary literal. A pre-upgrade VARBINARY(4) DEFAULT '0x41' may be stored as 0x41, although its original bytes are 30783431. These lines then export it as 'A' and rebuild it as byte 41. The helper cannot distinguish these values without provenance. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Preserve the original text representation or add explicit provenance during upgrade. Otherwise existing schemas can change during SHOW CREATE TABLE or table rebuilds.

…#607)
The `mysql-parser` lexer still used the token names of the MySQL
Workbench lexer it was ported from, such as `OPEN_PAR_SYMBOL` or
`INT_NUMBER`. The AST nodes already use names from the MySQL grammar
(`sql_yacc.yy`), so code that uses the parser had to mix two naming
schemes.
**This PR names all lexer tokens after the MySQL grammar:**
- Tokens use their `sql_yacc.yy` names, such as `IDENT`, `TEXT_STRING`,
`NUM`, or `GT_SYM`.
- Single-character tokens have no usable grammar name, so they are named
after the character, such as `LEFT_PAREN`, `COMMA`, or `ASTERISK`.
- The end marker is `YYEOF`, as in the C code that Bison generates.
- `SINGLE_QUOTED_TEXT` and `DOUBLE_QUOTED_TEXT` were two names for one
token, so they are now one `TEXT_STRING`.
Keywords are still looked up by their SQL spelling in
`WP_MySQL_Lexer::KEYWORDS`. The README now explains how to refer to
grammar rules, keywords, and other tokens.
**The lexer now defaults to MySQL 8.4.10**, the version of its grammar
and query corpus. With the old 8.0.38 default, version comments like
`/*!80400 ... */` were skipped. Three corpus queries with six-digit
version comments now parse too.
The PR also fixes a few leftovers:
- The grammar generators now use the MySQL tag of the fetched sources.
Before, the build could write the old `mysql-8.4.3` tag into the parse
table header.
- The unused `WP_MySQL_Lexer::get_token_id()` is removed.
- The README no longer points to a token data file that doesn't exist.
- A `read_quoted_text()` call no longer passes an argument that the
method ignores.

## API changes
The package isn't published yet, and the driver still uses its own
lexer, so no released code is affected.
- **Renamed** token constants in `WP_MySQL_Lexer` (see the table above).
`get_name()` returns the new names too, except for tokens with a keyword
spelling, such as `=` for `EQ` or `NULL` for `NULL_SYM`.
- **Removed** `WP_MySQL_Lexer::get_token_id()`.
- **Changed** the default `mysql_version` from `80038` to `80410`.
## Merge notes
- #432 needs the new names when it's rebased.
- #596 merges without a Git conflict, but it adds four uses of
`NCHAR_TEXT` and merges the two `get_value()` conditions into one.
Whichever PR lands second must rename them to `NCHAR_STRING` and
reformat the condition.
Follows up on #429.

Literal defaults on these columns were stored as written and then treated
as text. SHOW CREATE TABLE turned x'00' into the string 'x''00''', which
MySQL rejects, and inserts that omitted the column failed because a STRICT
BLOB column can't hold a TEXT default.
Store the defaults in hex like MySQL's INFORMATION_SCHEMA, write them to
SQLite as blobs, and read the forms that older versions stored.
Related to #551.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Older versions stored BINARY and VARBINARY defaults as written, and they
gave the SQLite tables TEXT defaults for them and for binary expression
defaults. Inserts that omitted such a column kept failing until the table
was recreated, and INFORMATION_SCHEMA kept showing the old forms.
Store these defaults in hex and recreate the affected tables, like the
temporal zero default migration does. Existing rows are kept as they are.
STRICT tables rejected the TEXT defaults, so only the unsafe mode for
SQLite < 3.37, which doesn't check types, can have rows with them.
The migration converts the forms that older versions stored, so the
driver no longer decodes them on every read. Until the migration runs,
such as on a build before the next version bump, an old default is
handled as before this PR, so inserts fail rather than store the wrong
bytes.
Older driver versions created STRICT tables only on SQLite 3.37.0 and
newer, and older SQLite can't parse them. Their non-STRICT tables accept
the TEXT defaults, so expect the failing insert only with STRICT tables.
SELECT N'abc' named its column N'abc', while MySQL names it abc.
A national string has no textStringLiteral node, so the alias logic
didn't treat it as a bare string literal.
The reconstructor wrapped the bytes of a blob literal default in quotes
as they were. A quote failed to parse, and a backslash changed the
value. BINARY and VARBINARY defaults are now blob literals in SQLite,
so this broke recovering any such default with these bytes.
Reading the cast value as a literal recovered expressions such as
CAST(1 + 1 AS BLOB) as the text '1 + 1', while SQLite stores 2.
Evaluate the cast in SQLite instead, like the hex literal branch does.
