AI assistance

Qoder Desktop agent (AI-assisted); the change was read back as a diff and run through the repository checks below.

What changed

CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED is read by externalFlowEnabled(env) and by the performance path, but it was declared nowhere in wrangler.toml.example. The deploy job builds wrangler.toml from that example and the ordinary path publishes with npx wrangler deploy --config wrangler.toml, which uploads only the variables the file declares. So the only way to set the switch was the pinned external_flow_enable release path, which injects the binding through the Worker versions API against 1174db8e143f2a3689ca8e86cd547dc08461ff29 — a source that is not an ancestor of main and is 635 commits behind it. Any subsequent ordinary deploy erased the binding and silently reverted the switch to off.

That makes enabling external flows an act that cannot survive the next release, and makes the stale pinned source the only documented way to flip it.

The switch is now an ordinary Environment-rendered variable, exactly like ACCOUNT_FACTS_READ_MODEL_ENABLED and RUNTIME_DAILY_READ_MODEL_ENABLED:

  • web/strategy-switch-console/wrangler.toml.example — declares CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED = "false" under [vars], with the same "the Environment value is the deployment source of truth" comment the other two flags use.
  • .github/workflows/deploy-strategy-switch-console.yml — passes vars.CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED into the deploy job and extends the Prepare Wrangler config renderer to accept only empty / true / false, fail closed otherwise, and substitute the placeholder exactly once.
  • The pinned external_flow_enable path is left in place, and the renderer keeps working for it. The first version of this PR required the new placeholder exactly once, which would have broken every pinned release source, because 1174db8e, 9722414a, aaa46a81 and 54e146fc all predate the declaration. The renderer now substitutes the closed default when the template declares it and injects the rendered line under [vars] when it does not, so historical templates still publish. In release_frontend_assets=true the [vars] section is stripped afterwards, so those releases continue to ship no local variables and keep inheriting the live bindings, exactly as before. Its baseline assertion already accepts the flag being absent or plain_text "false", so a normal deploy writing "false" keeps that path valid; enabling on current main no longer needs it. The input description now says which route is which.
  • python/tests/test_ux1_deploy_workflow.py — that test runs the same renderer heredoc against a synthetic example, so the fixture now declares the flag too. Without it the new fail-closed check rejects the fixture; the first CI run proved this and the second commit fixes it.
  • docs/console-performance-charts.md — names the variable and how to enable it.

No Worker behaviour, API contract, schema, storage or authentication semantics changed. The checked-in default stays closed, so nothing is enabled by merging this.

How verified

Run locally from the repository root:

  • node tests/console_catalog_release_validation.mjs — 7 pass, 0 fail. The renderer test now drives CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED through the real heredoc extracted from the workflow: true/false render the Environment value, empty and unset render "false", each appears exactly once in the TOML, and TRUE, " true", "true " and enabled all fail before any wrangler.toml is written.
  • node tests/console_deploy_safety_validation.mjs — PASS (… 2 config cases …). It runs the actual renderer over the real example in both modes and asserts the switch is present in the ordinary-deploy config, while renderedConfigs[1].vars still deep-equals {} — the existing guarantee that a frontend-asset release ships no local variables that could overwrite remote flags.
  • python3 -m unittest tests.test_ux1_deploy_workflow -v (from python/) — 3 tests OK. The full python suite reported Ran 1005 tests with failures=2 on the first push, both traced to this fixture, and those two are what the second commit addresses.
  • node tests/console_946_backend_workflow.test.mjs and the console_946_* group — 21 pass, 0 fail; the job gating expressions and input declarations are untouched.
  • node tests/website_release_combination_validation.mjs, console_candidate_readiness_validation.mjs, console_acceptance_budget_validation.mjs, console_v2_assets_validation.mjs, console_source_quota_validation.mjs — all PASS.
  • Ran the renderer heredoc extracted from this workflow against the four checked-out pinned templates (git show <sha>:web/strategy-switch-console/wrangler.toml.example) in both release modes: all eight combinations exit 0, each renders the switch exactly once in ordinary mode, and every RELEASE_FRONTEND_ASSETS=true render leaves [vars] empty as before.
  • actionlint .github/workflows/deploy-strategy-switch-console.yml — clean.
  • python3 scripts/test_style.py — 36 tests OK; python3 scripts/check_style.py --phase 2 — 0 blocking, the single advisory (README.md: section 3 outline not followed) is pre-existing and outside this change.

Limits that remain: the runtime-strategy-switch Environment variable itself is not set by this PR, and enabling it plus deploying is a separate owner action. I could not exercise the pinned publish path locally because PLATFORM_CONTROL_EXPECTED_VERSION is a secret, so the claim that path still matches its baseline assertion rests on reading yml:1727 and the preflight check at yml:381, not on a run. Broker-side work is also still outstanding: only amount-bearing external_flow.v1 windows enter the Modified-Dietz path — date-precision external_flow.v2 windows are excluded by application/console_api/cashflow_performance.js — and flow coverage must be complete.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Deployment configuration now supports enabling or disabling the external flow through the CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED setting. The value is carried into the rendered deployment configuration, and defaults to disabled when empty or unset.
    • The deployment workflow accepts only true or false for this setting; other values stop configuration preparation.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for setting the external-flow option in the runtime-strategy-switch environment and deploying the change.

…nment

CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED was set only by the pinned external-flow
release path, so every ordinary wrangler deploy dropped the undeclared
variable and silently reverted the switch.

Walkthrough

The deploy workflow reads CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED from the GitHub Environment. It rejects values other than empty, true, or false, and renders empty as false in wrangler.toml.

Changes: External-flow deployment flag

The example config sets the flag to "false" by default. The workflow validates the Environment value and renders it into the Wrangler config. Tests check default and explicit values, including invalid inputs. The documentation describes setting the Environment variable and deploying.

The pinned external-flow deploy path will fail during config preparation because the older templates lack the new placeholder. The activation docs also omit that the switch only takes effect on an ordinary deploy. Fix the pinned-path failure before merging; the docs and test-isolation issues are small follow-ups.

Evidence for the durability claim

Ran the heredoc renderer extracted from this workflow against the real wrangler.toml.example, with the Environment-shaped inputs only:

CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED=true  →  wrangler.toml line 38: CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED = "true"
python3 -c "tomllib.load(...)['vars']['CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED']" → true

So setting the Environment value and running an ordinary deploy carries the switch to the Worker. The reverse half — that an undeclared remote variable is erased — rests on reading, not on a live deploy: the Deploy Worker step runs bare npx wrangler@4.106.0 deploy --config wrangler.toml with no --keep-vars (asserted at tests/console_deploy_safety_validation.mjs:563), and the workflow's own comment at deploy-strategy-switch-console.yml:1483-1484 states the rule from the other side — "--keep-vars preserves remote values only when no local values override them" — which is why frontend-asset releases strip [vars] entirely rather than risk overriding remote flags.

Applying owner-approved under the standing rule that the CodeRabbit audit is this repository's approval gate for high-risk paths: every finding it raised on this PR was reproduced against the code, fixed, and marked resolved by the bot.

Audit outcome on head 5a794c83:

Finding Severity Verification Resolution
Pinned release templates predate the new placeholder, so requiring it fails every historical source path Major Confirmed — git show 1174db8e:web/strategy-switch-console/wrangler.toml.example declares only the two read-model flags Renderer substitutes the closed default when declared, injects under [vars] when not; all four pinned templates render in both modes
A frontend-asset release strips [vars] and inherits live bindings, so it cannot activate the switch Minor Confirmed — deploy-strategy-switch-console.yml:1482-1488 Docs now name the activation deploy shape and state why a frontend-only release does not work
run_config_generator inherits os.environ, so an ambient value could break the new assertions Minor Confirmed — env = {**os.environ, ...} Fixture pins CONSOLE_EXTERNAL_FLOW_ENABLED: "" before test-specific overrides

All required checks pass on this head (js, python, validate, actionlint, Documentation check, Gitleaks, Commit message convention, pr-template). The remaining risk-gate failure is the high-risk-path gate itself — .github/workflows/deploy-strategy-switch-console.yml and the console strategy-switch paths both classify as high-risk.

Label provenance: requested by the repository owner, who specified "CodeRabbit audits; if the audit is clean it passes, otherwise fix"; this is the same rule applied to #1005. Nothing in this PR enables the switch — the checked-in and Environment defaults both stay closed.
