fix(sign): signing UX pass (1/2) - #13
Conversation
The README claimed macOS builds are notarized and Windows builds signed, while users still meet Gatekeeper and SmartScreen. It now says so and keeps the SignPath attribution for when signing is set up.
On macOS, listing the readers polled an empty list, which panics in ebfe/scard: with the reader unplugged every status and signature got an empty reply, and `esign status` and `esign doctor` crashed.
Without a reader, signing now fails with no_reader, so the window and the dashboard both say to connect it. A provider that panics is reported unavailable instead of dropping the answer, `status` and `doctor` go on to the next provider, and when the agent stops answering the window says so instead of "Failed to fetch".
The agent's home page said "The agent is running" even without a reader or usable CIE software. It now checks the reader, the CIE and the signing software every 1.5 seconds while visible, says "Ready to sign" when all are fine, and shows the version. The built-in provider no longer counts as missing software when only the reader is missing; the signing page reads the status the same way.
A blocked PIN, a card that is not set up or not genuine, missing CIE software or no certificate now show the reason and Close instead of an empty PIN form inviting another attempt. Setup problems link the dashboard's setup guide, and the blocked PIN says where the PUK is. Messages that already say what to do no longer get "start again from the dashboard" added.
The PIN form now switches to "This signing link expired." by itself when the first job expires, also when the window comes back to the front after its timers slowed down. The expiry reads the same however it is noticed, and messages from the agent no longer repeat "start again from the dashboard".
Typing only the last 4 digits, as other CIE apps ask, now explains that all 8 are needed instead of a browser bubble that blocked the page's own messages. The hint says the halves are on the Comune's receipt and in the card's letter, and user-facing messages say PoliNetwork eSign instead of "the agent".
The screen that ends the window had no live region and kept no focus. After a blocked PIN, a setup error or the automatic expiry, the hidden Sign button took the focus with it to the page body, so a screen reader announced "Signing…" and then nothing. The heading now takes the focus and the section is a polite live region, as on the "Signed" screen.
Windows 8 and later run the Smart Card service only while a reader is attached, so without one PC/SC reports that the service is unavailable. The built-in provider then counted as missing software, and the home page showed "Signing software not available" on a laptop without CIE ID. On Windows the provider now reports no reader and stays available. With pcsc-lite a stopped service still means pcscd is missing.
A status page polling every 1.5 seconds holds the card for a moment, and pressing Sign then failed with "Another signature is in progress", so the 8 digits had to be typed again. A signature now waits up to 3 seconds for the card; a real signature in progress still answers busy.
A computer clock running fast ended the PIN form early, or showed "This signing link expired" at once while the link was still valid. When the local deadline passes the page now asks the backend, and checks again 30 seconds later if the link is still valid.
A short backend outage during Sign ended the window, and the signature had to start again from the dashboard. A single document now goes back to the PIN form, and a batch offers Try again.

- Line 54: Update the status-check logic around `render(status)` to handle
non-busy HTTP error responses by showing a failure state instead of retaining
the previous readiness display. Preserve the existing behavior of keeping the
last displayed state when the response indicates `busy`.
Review comments at @internal/server/web/assets/sign.js:
- Line 329: Update the reader-status message logic around the `reader.ok` and
`software.ok` checks so that when both are false it shows both problems or
prioritizes the software failure; retain the existing reader-only guidance when
the software is available.
- Line 301: Update the signing-page expiration handling around the jobs.some
check to mark each expired ticket as failed and remove it from pending, keeping
the form open for remaining tickets; end the page only when no pending tickets
remain.

When /api/status answered with an error other than busy, the home page kept the last state, so it could go on saying "Ready to sign" while every check failed. It now shows the error in place of the status, and a busy answer still keeps the last state.
… reader With no usable signing software the agent lists no readers either, and the signing window said "Connect the NFC card reader": the setup guide it needed was never mentioned. Missing software now comes first, as on the home page.
When the backend confirmed that one link of a batch expired, the whole window ended, and the documents whose links were still valid could no longer be signed from it. The expired document now leaves the PIN form and shows as failed in the list and in the results; the window ends only when no link is left.
First of two stacked PRs from a UX pass on CIE signing across the dashboard, the backend and this agent.
