refactor: split cardwired into multiple crates - #285
Split cardwired into multiple crates, that will provide a less maintainance burden for me, and a cleaner sharing of types and functions between the cli gui and daemon
Fixes # (issue)
Checklist:
My code follows the style guidelines of this project (cargo fmt)
I have performed a self-review of my code
I have commented my code, particularly in hard-to-understand areas
I have made corresponding changes to the mdBook documentation
My changes generate no new warnings (clippy/clang)
New and existing unit tests pass locally with my changes (either use nix flake check or wait for the ci)
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Added support for integrated, hybrid, manual, and smart GPU modes.
Added GPU, PCI-device, application metadata, and configuration interfaces.
Added smart application policy handling, including blocked, allowed, and forced GPU policies.
Added process environment analysis and improved application discovery.
Added clearer daemon status, GPU refresh, power-state, and launch-environment operations.
Changes
Configuration management is now centralized across the application.
The CLI configuration save command is no longer available.
The PR splits shared Cardwire types, configuration, D-Bus bindings, process analysis, and smart policy analysis into workspace crates. The daemon and CLI now use those crates. The change adds typed D-Bus proxies and updates GPU, PCI, mode, and process-analysis paths.
The new core crate exports shared metadata, mode, system, GPU, and PCI types. GPU and PCI code uses crate-specific errors and updated module paths. The workspace and Nix patch target include the relocated crate paths.
D-Bus contracts and CLI client crates/cardwire-dbus/*, crates/cardwire-cli/Cargo.toml, crates/cardwire-cli/src/dbus.rs, crates/cardwire-cli/src/display.rs
The D-Bus crate adds typed proxies and shared GPU, PCI, and application data types. The CLI client uses the proxies and shared transport types instead of manually configured generic proxies and local types.
Configuration and process-analysis crates crates/cardwire-config/*, crates/cardwire-analyzer/*, crates/cardwire-daemon/src/file/mod.rs
The configuration crate adds typed errors and owns configuration, state, and database modules. Database policy cache values are raw integers. The analyzer crate adds process-environment reading and imports shared application metadata.
Smart process analysis crates/cardwire-smart/*, crates/cardwire-ebpf-userspace/src/*, crates/cardwire-daemon/src/analyzer/*
The smart crate adds asynchronous execution-event analysis, policy evaluation, application discovery, and database messaging. The eBPF userspace crate adds event types and decoders.
The daemon uses the new crate modules and types. Its manager constructs SmartAnalyzer, and its mode, GPU, configuration, and smart-policy interfaces use the relocated APIs.
The CLI converts command modes to shared Modes, uses the updated client methods, and derives automatic GPU selection through the shared SystemType classifier.
Several CLI and daemon behaviors from the earlier review remain unresolved, including D-Bus setter calls that may not match the daemon's properties and a logger API that no longer receives events. Standalone builds of some new crates may also fail until their core features are declared. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

The title clearly summarizes the primary change: splitting Cardwire into multiple crates. This matches the workspace, core, config, D-Bus, smart, and daemon refactoring.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the PR splits cardwired into multiple crates to reduce maintenance and enable type sharing between the CLI, GUI, and daemon. That gives a clear purpose. It does not describe the new crates (cardwire-core, cardwire-dbus, cardwire-config, cardwire-smart, cardwire-ebpf-userspace changes), the migrated or removed public APIs (e.g., SystemType, GpuPolicy, CardwireError, and D-Bus method renames), or any testing or validation details. The 'Fixes # (issue)' placeholder is left unfilled, and the template's AI-usage disclosure comment is not addressed. The mdBook documentation and checklist items are ticked, but no documentation changes are visible in the summary. The template's required sections are present, but the content is thin for a change of this size and it breaks the public D-Bus interface.
Resolution
Add the following to the PR description: (1) a list of the new crates and what each one owns, (2) the breaking changes to the CLI, D-Bus interface, and public types (renamed methods, removed SystemType/GpuPolicy/CardwireError, and the Modes type now used over D-Bus), (3) the linked issue in place of the 'Fixes # (issue)' placeholder, or remove that line if none exists, (4) whether an AI tool was used, with a Co-Authored-By or Assisted-by line if so, (5) how the change was tested, including whether cargo fmt, clippy, and the unit tests were run, and (6) which mdBook documentation was updated, since the checklist is ticked but no docs change is described.

Review comments at @crates/cardwire-cli/src/dbus.rs:
- Around line 124-180: Centralize GPU object-path construction beside
CardwireGpuProxy with a shared prefix and gpu_object_path helper, then add a
DaemonClient::gpu_proxy helper and route get_gpu_device, block, set_block, lsof,
power_state, env, and launchable through it. Replace the hard-coded GPU paths in
main.rs::get_gpu_list and the daemon with the shared helper, and change
DaemonClient to store a &'a Connection directly instead of the unused generic
Proxy, updating connection access accordingly.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-cli/src/main.rs:
- Line 63: Mark the typed setter declarations in CardwireModeProxy, the GPU
proxy, and the configuration proxy with #[zbus(property)] so set_mode, the GPU
block setters, and all configuration setters issue D-Bus property writes rather
than method calls. Preserve their existing names, signatures, and behavior.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-config/Cargo.toml:
- Around line 19-21: Remove the unused cardwire-analyzer dependency from the
manifest. Decouple persistence from D-Bus types by introducing a
transport-neutral metadata type containing gpu_policy for read_db, then convert
it to DbusAppMetadata at the daemon boundary; do not substitute AppMetadata,
which lacks gpu_policy.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-config/src/state.rs:
- Line 132: Update the serialization error label in CardwireGpuState::save_state
to use “gpu_state.json” instead of “mode.json”, matching the file being
serialized while preserving the existing CardwireStateError handling.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-core/Cargo.toml:
- Around line 15-20: Separate cardwire-core’s plain contract types from its
hardware-discovery dependencies: either introduce a minimal cardwire-types crate
for Modes, GpuType, AppMetadata, and SystemType, or feature-gate the hardware
modules and make vulkano, khronos-egl, libdrm_amdgpu_sys, nvml-wrapper, tokio,
and cardwire-ebpf-userspace optional. Ensure cardwire-dbus and cardwire-cli
build without hardware dependencies, while cardwire-daemon enables the hardware
feature and retains the existing discovery modules.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-daemon/src/interface/mode.rs:
- Around line 233-236: Update set_mode’s error handling around internal_set_mode
so errors downcast to fdo::Error preserve their original variant, including
NotSupported; convert only non-fdo errors to fdo::Error::Failed using the
existing error text.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-daemon/src/interface/smart.rs:
- Around line 170-175: Update the policy validation in the visible
policy-handling method to reject values below 0 as well as values above 2,
preserving the valid inclusive range 0 through 2 and returning the existing
InvalidArgs error for out-of-range inputs.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-daemon/src/manager.rs:
- Around line 228-237: Update run_analyzer and the SmartAnalyzer execution path
to consume CW_REPORT_EVENTS, decode reports, and forward them to
LoggerInterface.report_logs and process_blocked_changed. Use a daemon-layer
callback or channel for successful app discovery, wire the existing
new_app_signal into it, and emit new_app_added after the database insert
succeeds; keep cardwire-smart free of zbus dependencies.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-smart/src/types.rs:
- Around line 285-317: Update insert_to_db so every send, receive, and success
path removes comm from pending_discoveries before returning. Move the db_cache
insertion into the Ok(true) branch only; leave Ok(false) uncached, and return
the captured operation outcome after cleanup.
- Around line 205-219: Update evaluate_process to normalize the process key once
by stripping Nix wrappers and lowercasing comm, while preserving the Steam AppId
override; pass this same process key to both is_process_in_db and discover_app
so discovery uses the normalized or Steam-derived identifier.

DiagnosticGpu variant and leave its current placeholder behavior unchanged.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-config/Cargo.toml:

manifest to enable the gpu and app_metadata features; gpu also provides the
required modes and pci features. Leave unrelated dependencies unchanged.
Review comments at @crates/cardwire-core/Cargo.toml:
- Line 11: Add a lightweight gpu_models feature and make system_type enable it;
in lib.rs, compile the gpu module when either gpu or gpu_models is enabled. In
gpu/mod.rs, gate models on gpu_models and keep env, inode, procfs, errors, and
enumeration modules gated on gpu, so model types are available without enabling
hardware-probing dependencies.

it with log::debug! so it respects the crate’s logging configuration.
