Description

Decode H.264/HEVC through a standalone NVDEC pybind11 extension and expose CUDA frame buffers, including NV12-to-RGBA conversion. The extension and Python wrapper build independently of robot-control and Isaac Capture runtime dependencies.

Part 3/5 of the split of #1358. Base: #1390. Review this PR against its selected base to see only this component. The original PR is retained for discussion/history; it has not been rewritten or closed.

Per maintainer approval, files missing an explicit grant now carry Apache-2.0 headers. The three Argus-derived helpers (EGLGlobal.h, EGLGlobal.cpp, and Error.h, introduced in part 2) retain BSD-3-Clause notices; the missing upstream notice in EGLGlobal.cpp has been restored. Temporary LicenseRef-NVIDIA-Internal-Review metadata has been removed. All five parts pass full pre-commit checks; the combined stack also passes 7 portable C++ tests and 47 Python tests after this licensing-only update. Merge in order, retargeting/rebasing each dependent PR as its parent lands.

Type of change

  • New feature
  • Documentation update

Testing

Built the CUDA/NVDEC extension on the NVIDIA workstation using CUDA 13.3 (SM 89); 2 Python decoder-wrapper tests passed. No live decode was exercised in this split-validation pass.

SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files passed on this exact part. C++ additions were checked with clang-format-14.

Checklist

  • I have read the contribution guidelines.
  • I have run the full pre-commit checks.
  • Documentation matches the components available in this part.
  • Component tests are included where applicable; the viewer has CLI validation and awaits live operator testing.
  • All commits carry DCO sign-off.

Review stack

  1. AVS1 protocol, shared camera configuration, and portable tests
  2. Jetson Argus capture, HEVC encoding, and TCP sender
  3. Standalone NVDEC CUDA decoder
  4. Bounded TCP receiver and CUDA IPC publication
  5. CUDA IPC viewer and GMSL operator runbook

Component layout

Component directories now live directly under examples/camera_streamer/, without an intermediate visualization directory. Build paths, default-profile lookup, tests and license annotations follow the flattened layout. Reconfigure native builds after updating an existing deployment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added NVIDIA GPU-accelerated H.264 and HEVC decoding for camera streams, with RGBA and NV12 output and optional 180-degree rotation.
    • Added workstation setup instructions for building and testing the decoder.
  • Tests
    • Added Python tests covering decoder output and rotation handling.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

Adds an NVIDIA NVDEC decoder for H.264 and HEVC streams. The decoder writes RGBA or NV12 data to caller-provided GPU buffers and supports 180-degree rotation. The change adds C++ and Python interfaces, a CMake build for the native module, workstation setup instructions, and CPU-side Python tests.

The new NVDEC decoder is an example component with a documented test command that fails as written and a dependency pin that can break setup on newer Python. The native decoder also has error-path and reset-safety gaps that can exhaust decoder surfaces or leave an instance unusable after a failure. Fix these before merging, or explicitly accept them for an example component.

Serialize decode and reset.

decode() and decode_nv12() release the GIL, while reset() directly destroys and recreates the native NvDecoder. A concurrent caller can therefore use decoder after reset() frees it. The current RTP worker serializes these calls, but the exposed binding does not protect direct concurrent use.

Add one mutex and lock decode_one, decode_one_nv12, and reset_decoder.

Release the locked frame and CUDA context when a conversion or copy call throws.

launch_nv12_to_rgba, launch_nv12_rotate_180, and check_rt(cudaMemcpy2DAsync ...) can throw. When that happens:

  • UnlockFrame never runs, so the NVDEC surface stays out of the pool.
  • cuCtxPopCurrent never runs, so the context stays on the calling thread's stack.
  • A queued async copy can still read the surface.

If failures repeat (for example, a bad pitch), the decoder pool runs out of surfaces and decoding stops.

Wrap the work in a try/catch. Synchronize the stream, unlock the frame, pop the context, then rethrow. Apply the same change to decode_one_nv12.

reset_decoder cannot recover after a failed re-creation.

If std::make_unique<NvDecoder> throws at Line 290, decoder stays null. Every later decode* call then throws "decoder unavailable". Line 284 returns early when decoder is null, so reset() is a no-op. The instance cannot recover, and the caller's reset-on-timeout path does not help.

Remove the early return. Create the decoder whether or not one exists.

Align the NumPy constraint with the supported Python versions.

On Python 3.13, numpy<2 has no compatible wheel. On a CPU-only runner without a compiler, uv run --extra dev fails before pytest starts. Allow a compatible NumPy 2 release or restrict the project to Python below 3.13. (pypi.org)
