feat(aws): reconcile EC2 and Redshift purchases after an unknown outcome - #708
Closes#298. This is PR B. PR A (#690) merged the pkg types.
What
After a purchase returns ErrOutcomeUnknown, a caller can now ask the provider, read-only, whether the commitment exists. The AWS EC2 and Redshift clients implement the optional provider.PurchaseReconciler.
Verdicts:
Found only when exactly one candidate fully matches the attributes, is in a live state, falls inside the attempt window (RequestedAt - 5m to AttemptEndedAt), and no other candidate is uncertain.
Unknown otherwise, with a distinct Reason: invalid-window, invalid-request, lookup-failed, lookup-incomplete, offering-unresolved, no-candidate, ambiguous, or uncertain-candidate.
Never NotFound.
No side effects: no purchase, no tag write. The window and request are validated before any API call.
EC2: one unfiltered DescribeReservedInstances, then a pure riFit classifier.
Instance type, count, product (VPC suffix ignored), tenancy, scope/AZ, duration, offering type and class are all compared.
The idempotency tag excludes other lineages and sets Tagged.
Any missing field or non-live state is uncertain.
Redshift: re-derives the offering with findOfferingID, scans every node with describeAllNodes (extracted from findMatchingNodes, behaviour-preserving), then applies a pure nodeFit. Tagged is always false, because Redshift nodes can't be tagged.
Shared rule in providers/aws/internal/purchasecfg: Decide, ReconcileWindow, InWindow, ClockSkew and the Reason constants. The fail-closed rule lives in one place.
Wiring test: EC2 and Redshift (including the compute and datawarehouse aliases) are reconcilers, and every other AWS service client is not.
Not changed
go.mod and go.sum are untouched: providers/aws already pins a pkg that has the reconcile types.
Platform: bump the pins and call ReconcilePurchase, in a separate repo.
Verification
From providers/aws with GOWORK=off: go build ./..., go test -p 2 ./... -count=1, go vet and golangci-lint all pass (0 lint issues), on the branch rebased onto current main.
Each task was test-first and had two adversarial task-review passes, followed by a full-branch review in two passes.
Mutation probes were run on every rule. Each one made a named test fail, except one pre-existing gap noted in the plan: setting the guard's skew constant directly is untested on main too.
One of the EC2 rows reproduces the real lost-response case: a purchase returns an empty 200, and the RI it created is untagged. In that case ReconcilePurchase reports Found, while the existing token lookup alone misses it.
EC2 and Redshift can check for an existing purchase after an AWS purchase request has an unknown outcome. Reconciliation reports a match only when exactly one purchase fully matches within the attempt window; otherwise, the result remains unknown.
Bug Fixes
EC2 product descriptions that differ only by the “(Amazon VPC)” suffix are now recognized as matching.
Redshift reconciliation checks all available result pages and reports incomplete scans rather than treating them as complete.
One Decide rule for EC2 and Redshift reconcile: exactly one match and no
uncertain candidate is Found, everything else is Unknown with a distinct
Reason phrase.

A match with an empty ID can never be Found with a usable CommitmentID.
It now yields Unknown uncertain-candidate.

Found results shared the caller backing array, so a consumer writing an

findMatchingNodes now filters the full scan; behaviour is unchanged and

Pure nodeFit classifies a described node against the purchase as no,

Read-only lookup after an unknown purchase outcome: resolves the

purchasecfg.Decide. An incomplete scan is Unknown (cap is
lookup-incomplete, distinct from lookup-failed).

EC2 and Redshift clients add read-only purchase reconciliation. Shared helpers validate attempt windows and classify candidate results. Provider tests cover reconciler availability, and the changelog records the behavior.
Shared helpers validate and pad reconciliation windows, check inclusive bounds, and decide among unknown, no-candidate, found, and ambiguous results. Tests cover outcomes, reasons, and criteria-slice independence.
EC2 validates requests, lists reserved instances, and classifies candidates by attributes, state, time window, and idempotency tags. Product descriptions with the Amazon VPC suffix match their trimmed form. Tests cover results and confirm reconciliation does not purchase or tag resources.
Redshift collects all node pages before matching and reports incomplete scans. Reconciliation classifies nodes by offering, count, type, term, state, and time window. Payment-option checks use a shared map that preserves the existing price-shape rules. Tests cover scan and reconciliation outcomes.
Provider exposure and changelog providers/aws/reconciler_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
Tests assert that EC2 and Redshift service types expose the reconciler while the listed other types do not. The changelog documents reconciliation outcomes and interface availability.
LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-go#684: The EC2 and Redshift reconciliation request validation uses the purchase-count validation helper introduced by this PR.
Merge Risk: Low · up to a80a3
The new Redshift reconciliation could report a purchase as found based on an identical node from another source. This is tracked in #711 and cannot occur until a platform caller is added, so it is a bounded follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

Explanation
The title "feat(aws): reconcile EC2 and Redshift purchases after an unknown outcome" matches the main change. The PR adds read-only reconciliation to the EC2 and Redshift clients. Reconciliation runs after a purchase returns ErrOutcomeUnknown. The title names both services, the trigger condition, and the action. Supporting code includes the reconcile.go files for both services and the shared purchasecfg helpers. The title is specific and concise.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes support #298 or keep existing behaviour. New shared rules in providers/aws/internal/purchasecfg/reconcile.go and their tests support both providers. The EC2 and Redshift reconcilers, the Redshift describeAllNodes extraction, and the findMatchingNodes characterization test support reconciliation. The extraction is behaviour-preserving, and the characterization test pins it. redshiftClockSkew now aliases purchasecfg.ClockSkew, which keeps the same five-minute value. The productMatches change in offering_match.go and the paymentShapes change in redshift/client.go support EC2 matching and supportedPaymentOption. The wiring tests and the CHANGELOG entry describe the new interface support. No unrelated change was found in the summaries reviewed.

Explanation
[#298] Provider-side reconciliation is present at the reviewed head. EC2 ReconcilePurchase (providers/aws/services/ec2/reconcile.go) validates the window and request, then makes one read-only DescribeReservedInstances call and passes the classified results to purchasecfg.Decide. Redshift ReconcilePurchase (providers/aws/services/redshift/reconcile.go) re-derives the offering, scans nodes with describeAllNodes, and passes results to purchasecfg.Decide. A complete lookup with zero matches returns Unknown with Reason no-candidate. Incomplete or failed lookups return separate reasons. The tests cover these paths. This change now gives a distinct negative reason, which addresses the earlier concern that zero matches had no conclusive outcome.
[#298] The expected behaviour is not met. The issue requires that a matching commitment marks the execution completed, and that retry is allowed only when nothing matches. No caller of ReconcilePurchase exists in this repository. The PR defers the platform call, the completion, and the retry relaxation to a separate repository. The IAM template confirmation for ec2:DescribeReservedInstances and redshift:DescribeReservedNodes is not evidenced in the PR. Redshift candidates are not lineage-checked; this is tracked in #711.
Resolution
Keep #298 open, or include the remaining work in this change. Remaining work: (1) call ReconcilePurchase from the execution flow after ErrOutcomeUnknown; (2) mark the execution completed on a Found verdict; (3) permit retry on Unknown with Reason no-candidate; (4) confirm the two read actions in the target-account IAM templates. Remove Closes #298 from the PR description until items 1 to 4 ship.

Describe call instead of offering-unresolved. The supported payment options

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Failure case: two lineages buy the same offering and count in overlapping windows, and ours never landed. Reconcile could then return Found on the other lineage's node.
EC2 avoids this with its tag rule (ec2/reconcile_match.go:47-49).
This PR can't fix it on its own: ClaimReader isn't in its pinned pkg, and nothing calls reconcile yet.
Low: the Redshift states are hardcoded.stateFit (redshift/reconcile_match.go:83-88) hardcodes "active" and "payment-pending", while ownedNodeState (client.go:586-596) uses the shared constants. Reuse those constants so the two lists can't drift.
The second matcher (nodeFit beside nodeMatches) is justified, because the two have opposite polarity on purpose: dedupe treats nil as a match, while reconcile treats it as uncertain. Both share describeAllNodes.
Low: there is no compile-time var _ provider.PurchaseReconciler = (*Client)(nil) in ec2 or redshift. Runtime tests at providers/aws/reconciler_test.go:18,43 cover both clients.
Low: Redshift re-derives the offering with findOfferingID (reconcile.go:53) instead of using the attempted offering. If the offering drifts, the result is a safe Unknown.
What I attacked
No NotFound. The pkg has no NotFound verdict, and every exit either returns Unknown with a Reason or goes through Decide (purchasecfg/reconcile.go:46-76).
Found requires exactly one match and no uncertain candidates.
A blank ID counts as uncertain.
Zero matches return "no candidate".
A missing, zero or inverted window returns "invalid window", checked before any API call.
Hitting the page cap returns "lookup incomplete".
Window bounds. The window is [RequestedAt-5m, AttemptEndedAt+5m], inclusive at both ends. Tests at ±1ns cover both bounds.
EC2 criteria. Matching checks instance type, tenancy, scope, AZ, offering type and class, count, duration, start, live state and product. A tag from another token makes a node non-fitting. Duplicate tags make it uncertain.
Darling's PR-B notes. Each Unknown branch has a distinct Reason (TestReasonPhrasesAreDistinct). The window is validated first. Tagged is documented as EC2-only and is always false for Redshift.
Write safety. The change is read-only, with no tag writes and no secrets.
Mutation probes (each reverted). Each one failed a named test:
dropping count, class, zone or type: TestRIFit / TestNodeFit;
ignoring another token's tag: TestRIFit and TestReconcilePurchase;
dropping offering, count, state or start, or flipping the window check: TestNodeFit / TestReconcilePurchase;
widening the window or removing a bound: TestReconcileWindow / TestInWindow;
allowing an inverted or zero window: TestReconcileWindow;
returning Found on several candidates, an empty Found on zero, or ignoring uncertain candidates: TestDecide;
treating the page cap as success: TestReconcilePurchase_CapDistinctFromLookupFailed.
CI at this SHA: Unit, Integration, Lint, pre-commit, Security, Snyk, Trivy, gosec and CI Success all pass. CodeRabbit hit its rate limit.
Gaps: AWS StartTime and state behaviour for fresh purchases is taken from the SDK docs, not a live account.
Cold adversarial review at the head above. The PR body was treated as a claim and checked against the code and the merged contract in pkg/provider/reconcile.go and pkg/common/reconcile.go.
Findings
No blocking findings. The notes below are Low.
Low, Redshift ReconcilePurchase ignores Options.IdempotencyToken and Options.AttemptJournal (providers/aws/services/redshift/reconcile.go:43-75). pkg/common/reconcile.go:19-21 says "IdempotencyToken and OfferingClass are used when set". Redshift nodes cannot be tagged, so the token cannot identify a node, and the journal cannot close the describe lag either (dedupe.go:50). Ignoring both is therefore correct, but the reconcile doc comment does not say so. Refutation attempt: I looked for a way the journal could narrow the match. A journal record carries attempt times, but RequestedAt already bounds the lineage. Suggestion only: add one line to the doc comment.
Low, residual false Found (the under-buy direction). An untagged RI or node bought outside this lineage, with an identical spec and a start inside [RequestedAt-5m, AttemptEndedAt+5m], is reported Found when this attempt did not land. For EC2, a tagged RI from another lineage is excluded (ec2/reconcile_match.go:44-47). An untagged one is not, which is unavoidable because a lost-response RI is untagged (TestReconcilePurchase_LostResponseUntaggedRI). For Redshift there is no tag at all. When two such commitments exist, the result is ambiguous (Unknown), not Found. The time span is short, and the failure mode is an under-buy rather than a double-buy. No change requested.
Low, AttemptEndedAt far in the future is not rejected (internal/purchasecfg/reconcile.go:27-32). It only widens the window, which raises the chance of the case in note 2. Callers pass time.Now(). No change requested.
What I checked
No NotFound.ReconcileVerdict has only unknown and found (pkg/common/reconcile.go:10-13). Every early exit goes through UnknownResult (purchasecfg/reconcile.go:40-43). Found is built in exactly one place, Decide (purchasecfg/reconcile.go:63-69). The zero value has Verdict "", and IsFound() is false for it.
Unknown causes, each with a distinct Reason:
invalid window: zero start, zero end, or end before start (ReconcileWindow).
invalid request: region, count, term, payment option, class or resource type.
lookup-failed: API error, nil output or a canceled context.
lookup-incomplete: Redshift page cap, through errScanCapReached.
offering-unresolved.
no-candidate.
ambiguous: more than one match.
uncertain-candidate: any nil field, blank ID, non-live state, duplicate tag values, or a same-token tag on a partial match.
A start before the window or a future start is a mismatch, so it yields no-candidate, which is still Unknown.
Fields compared for EC2 (ec2/reconcile_match.go:84-107): instance type, tenancy, scope, offering type (the payment option), offering class, AZ (a regional request rejects an AZ), count, duration, start inside the window, live state and product (VPC suffix ignored).
Fields compared for Redshift (redshift/reconcile_match.go:39-55): offering ID (which carries payment and term), node type, count, duration, start inside the window and state. A mismatch takes precedence over doubt, and doubt takes precedence over a match.
Interface. The method signature matches provider.PurchaseReconciler exactly. providers/aws/reconciler_test.go pins which clients are reconcilers.
Tagged. It is EC2-only and documented as such: Redshift passes false (redshift/reconcile.go:73-74).
Pagination. EC2 DescribeReservedInstances is not paginated. The Redshift scan fails on an error, a canceled context or the page cap, and is never treated as partial (dedupe.go:66-90).
Refactor. The findMatchingNodes refactor preserves behaviour, and find_matching_nodes_test.go pins it.
Mutation probes
Each probe ran in a scratch worktree and was reverted at once. All were killed:
git show --remerge-diff a80a35e is empty, so there was no conflict to resolve.
The PR's own diff against its merge base has the same files and line counts as at 9b7ef42.
Merge-only delta re-reviews at a80a35e are needed from claude-ui-fix-1 and claude-cc-platform-2 (via the coordinator).
go#711: #708 now merges before #710, so per the merge-order condition #710 adds the ClaimReader read to Redshift ReconcilePurchase (a node another token claimed is uncertain, so the verdict is Unknown) when it rebases onto main.
