Mesh assets took their tangents from our copy of Blender's MikkTSpace port. GLTF took tangents from Blender's port or from Lengyel's generator. Both meant an unwelded copy, a second weld and an allocation at every step.

With this PR, every mesh and GLTF tangent comes from meshoptimizer's MikkTSpace-compatible mode in a single pass. Blender's port, the mikktspace external and LLCalculateTangentArray are gone.

meshoptimizer resolves from the Alchemy registry at 1.3#1. That port version patches compatible mode to match the reference MikkTSpace, where stock 1.3 does not.

This is part 4 of a stack of 7. Merge them in order: each PR is based on the one before it and shows only its own commits.

  1. Prim normals point straight out of their surfaces, caps face out, and a flexible prim rebuilds in place #556 prim normals
  2. A straight prim gets one quad per profile edge, and rows its parameters collapse emit no triangles #557 vertex reduction
  3. A prim every LOD builds alike is generated once, and its LOD changes rebuild nothing #558 LOD-invariant prims
  4. Mesh and GLTF tangents come from meshoptimizer's MikkTSpace mode, welded and ordered in one pass #559 mesh tangents ← this PR
  5. Prims, sculpts, GLTF primitives and avatar meshes are ordered for the vertex cache #560 vertex cache order
  6. Planar texgen maps a face that faces one way as one plane, and its normal map takes the planar frame #561 planar texgen
  7. The uploader's LODs and normals come from meshoptimizer's attribute-aware simplifier #562 uploader LODs and normals

Changes

  • ALScratchArena: each thread gets a 4 MB LIFO arena for its scratch, with no locks. meshoptimizer allocates from it (LLMeshOptimizer::initClass, called from LLAppViewer::init), so faces up to about 32,000 triangles stay off the heap.

  • LLVolumeFace::cacheOptimize:

    • takes tangents from meshoptimizer's compatible mode over the face as it was authored: positions scaled out of the unit cube, unit normals scaled by the inverse;
    • brings each corner's tangent back to the face's frame, puts it in its normal's plane and normalizes it before the weld, so two tangents a ulp apart never make two vertices;
    • welds once;
    • orders the triangles for the vertex cache and the vertices for fetch;
    • writes every attribute once, in its final place.

    A face whose weld would overflow 16-bit indices keeps one copy of each vertex. unpackVolumeFaces now decodes and optimizes in separate steps, so tests can hold a face as decoded.

  • GLTF primitives: take their tangents from the same compatible mode.

  • Registry baseline: moves to a6132ca, which adds meshoptimizer 1.3#1 and changes no other port. The patch makes compatible mode match the reference:

    • one reversed partner per edge;
    • triangles with coincident corners left out;
    • the reference's thresholds for a good triangle;
    • its double-precision acos;
    • its split of exactly opposite tangents.

    Default mode is untouched.

Results

Corners more than 0.1° from reference MikkTSpace, over the whole mesh cache:

generator corners off
meshoptimizer 1.3#1 0.0047%
Blender's port (removed) 0.072%
stock meshoptimizer 1.3 0.53%

Over the whole cache, 896,033 faces:

  • every triangle and corner is kept;
  • no vertex is made twice;
  • every tangent is unit length, orthogonal to its normal, and has the handedness its triangles' UVs give, wherever MikkTSpace gives a triangle a tangent space.

Over a 2,000-mesh sample, cacheOptimize takes about a quarter fewer cycles than before. It allocates 61 heap blocks in all, where it took about 49 per face.

Testing

  • llmath_tests, shuffled: 418 cases. 417 pass and 1 is skipped.
  • New cases: the welds, the fallback past 16-bit indices, the arena, and the tangents' frame. A hidden case reads the viewer's mesh cache through AL_MESH_CORPUS_DIR; the whole-cache figures above come from it.
  • Shuffled: llprimitive_tests passes all 48 cases. llcommon_tests has 722 cases: 719 pass and 3 are skipped.
  • Viewer: not yet checked. To check:
    • normal-mapped meshes and GLTF at sizes other than their authored one;
    • a GLTF upload with more than 65,535 vertices.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Updated mesh optimization and tangent generation for volume and glTF models, including vertex welding and improved vertex and triangle ordering.
    • Invalid mesh data is now rejected during optimization, while vertex weights are preserved.
    • Mesh processing now handles larger faces and varied geometry scales more consistently.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved tangent handling for scaled geometry, mirrored UVs, and faces with limited tangent directions.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded testing guidance for optional real-mesh corpus cases, corpus benchmarks, and sanitizer-specific test behavior.

The changes add a per-thread scratch arena and connect it to meshoptimizer allocation. Volume-face optimization and glTF tangent generation now use meshoptimizer. The vendored MikkTSpace implementation and its dependency entries are removed. Tests and benchmarks cover allocation, optimization, and optional cached-mesh corpus data.

Changes: Meshoptimizer tangent and scratch allocation migration

ALScratchArena gives each thread a 4 MB region, made the first time the
thread takes from it, and hands out 16-byte aligned blocks from its top;
giving a block back moves the top down to it. A block that does not fit
what is left comes from operator new and goes back there. Nothing is
locked, since a thread touches only its own arena. Scope takes up to 16
blocks and gives them back as it ends, and counters say what the arena
served and the most of it in use at once.

meshoptimizer frees its scratch in exactly that order, and the size is
set by LLVolumeFace::cacheOptimize, its largest user: about 35 bytes an
index and 36 a vertex, so faces up to about 32,000 triangles stay off the
heap.

…pass

LLVolumeFace::cacheOptimize took tangents from Blender's MikkTSpace over
an unwelded copy of the face, welded it again, and ordered it with
meshoptimizer, allocating at every step. It now:
- takes MikkTSpace's tangents from meshoptimizer's compatible mode over
  the face as authored, its positions scaled out of the unit cube and its
  unit normals by the inverse;
- brings each corner's tangent back into the face's frame, puts it in its
  normal's plane and normalizes it before the weld, so tangents a ulp
  apart never make two vertices; a corner the plane leaves nothing takes
  an axis in it, as the prims' do;
- welds the corners into one vertex for each of a vertex's tangents, and
  copies of a vertex the same in every attribute into one; a face whose
  weld would pass 16-bit indices keeps one of each vertex, each with its
  first corner's tangent;
- orders the triangles for the vertex cache and the vertices for fetch,
  and writes every attribute once, in its final place;
- takes all its scratch from the thread's ALScratchArena, on which
  meshoptimizer now allocates too (LLMeshOptimizer::initClass, from
  LLAppViewer::init).

GLTF primitives take their tangents from the same compatible mode, so
Blender's MikkTSpace port and Lengyel's generator (LLCalculateTangentArray)
are gone, with the mikktspace external. unpackVolumeFaces decodes in
decodeVolumeFaces and optimizes after, so tests can hold a face as decoded.

Tests cover the welds, the fallback past 16-bit indices, the arena, the
tangents' frame, and a hidden case that reads the viewer's mesh cache
(ALMeshCorpus, AL_MESH_CORPUS_DIR). Over the whole cache, 896,033 faces,
every triangle and corner is kept, no vertex is made twice, and every
tangent is unit, orthogonal to its normal and of the handedness its
triangles' UVs give. Over a 2,000-mesh sample, cacheOptimize takes about
36% fewer cycles than before, and allocates 61 heap blocks in all where
it took about 49 a face.

meshoptimizer now resolves from the Alchemy registry, whose 1.3#1 patches
its compatible tangents to group, weigh and fall back as the reference
MikkTSpace does: one reversed partner per edge, triangles with coincident
corners left out, the reference's thresholds for a good triangle, its
double-precision acos and its split of exactly opposite tangents. Over the
mesh cache they are 0.0047% of corners past 0.1 degree from the
reference's, against 0.53% for 1.3 as it was. The baseline moves to
a6132ca, which adds the port and changes no other; the manifest resolves
meshoptimizer 1.3#1 from the registry.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
meshoptimizer 1.3#1 groups, weighs and falls back as the reference
MikkTSpace does, and the tests follow it in two places.

A triangle MikkTSpace does not take as one with a tangent space of its
own (coincident corners, no UV area past FLT_MIN, or a tangent or
bitangent whose length over that area is not past it) takes its
orientation from the triangles about it, whatever its UVs wind. That
happens on faces with garbage UVs, where a tangent's squares underflow:
about a dozen faces in the mesh cache. mikkGood asks MikkTSpace's own
test of the triangle as cacheOptimize hands it over, in its float
arithmetic, compiled without contraction or reassociation, and the
handedness check passes over the triangles it refuses.

The grid with degenerate triangles has 55 distinct vertex and tangent
pairs under the reference's grouping where 1.3 gave it 52, so its vertex
cache and fetch figures rise to 0.7763 and 1.0182. GCC and Clang on ARM,
building meshoptimizer with fused multiply-adds, group its degenerate
triangles' tangents otherwise, at 0.8158 and 1.0207: the bound is those.

Over the whole cache every face passes again. cacheOptimize spends about
20% more cycles than on 1.3, still about a quarter fewer than before the
move to meshoptimizer.

alscratcharena_test checks that a size near the top of size_t, as
meshoptimizer asks for when a count overflows, goes to the heap and comes
back as std::bad_alloc. Under AddressSanitizer, the Sanitizers workflow's
asan row, operator new is the sanitizer's: it reports the size as
allocation-size-too-big and ends the process, so the entry and llcommon's
combined run failed. ThreadSanitizer's does the same, and
allocator_may_return_null=1 changes only the report, to out-of-memory.

ll_test::SANITIZER_ALLOCATOR (altestsanitizer.h) says operator new is
AddressSanitizer's or ThreadSanitizer's, and the case is skipped under it.
UBSan alone leaves operator new as it is, and the case still runs there.

Comment thread indra/llmath/tests/almeshcorpus.h
ALMeshCorpus::fromEnvironment walked AL_MESH_CORPUS_DIR on one error
code, which the walk and each entry's status read shared, and stopped at
the first error with the files it had. A folder it could not list gave
the [corpus] case and the corpus benchmark a part of the corpus, which
passed: of two folders of 300 cache files with an unlistable one between
them, it read 300.

An error in the walk now fails the case with the directory's path, and an
error reading an entry's status with the entry's. A file gone by the time
its status is read, as a viewer running on the cache may evict one, is
passed over: libstdc++ reports a dangling entry so. Only names that look
like cache files have their status read.

Reject an invalid configured corpus path instead of skipping it.

When AL_MESH_CORPUS_DIR names an existing regular file, is_directory returns false and fromEnvironment() returns std::nullopt. The corpus test and benchmark then call SKIP, so a configured run silently performs no corpus validation or benchmark. Keep the unset variable optional, but report a configured non-directory path as an error.

ALMeshCorpus::fromEnvironment took an AL_MESH_CORPUS_DIR that is not a
directory as no corpus at all, so a mistyped path skipped the [corpus]
case and the corpus benchmark as though nothing had been asked for. An
unset or empty variable still means no corpus; a name that is not a
directory now fails the case with its path and the reason.
