Fetch the Darwin toolset and OpenAppleMacros with retries and an error that names the GitHub URL so a failed toolchain download is not mistaken for a broken Xcode.xip.

- Line 109: Update the retry flow in the downloader’s `fetch` function so each
attempt fully consumes the returned `HTTPBody` before succeeding. Keep
body-iteration errors inside the retry boundary, attach the artifact and URL
when reporting a final failure, and discard any partially accumulated output
before retrying.

Read the diff and the surrounding SDKBuilder code; didn't execute anything (no Swift toolchain on this host), so this is a static review.
Reordering the two GitHub downloads ahead of the XIP work is the right fix for #137 — under the old code a toolset fetch failure landed after minutes of XIP extraction and the error string didn't distinguish the two. Naming the artifact and URL in the error is better than a generic "download failed" because it tells the user exactly what to check, and the "not caused by your Xcode.xip / no need to re-download" line addresses the actual confusion from the issue.
Things I'd flag:
- The retry loop ignores
Retry-After. For 429s — which release-asset downloads can definitely hit — three attempts spaced 250 ms apart will nearly always all fail; GitHub commonly asks for 60+ seconds on secondary rate limits. The response headers are available right wherehttpStatusis constructed, so honoringRetry-Afterwhen present (capped, so a broken server value can't stall setup indefinitely) would make the retry path actually work in the case it's most needed for. Fixed-spacing retries with no backoff are also a bit aggressive toward a 5xxing server; doubling per attempt is cheap. for attempt in 1...maxAttemptsfollowed bythrow lastError!: withmaxAttempts: 0the range is empty and the!traps on nil. Internal struct with a default of 3, so low severity, but aprecondition(maxAttempts >= 1)removes the trap entirely.- Every error out of
httpClient.send— includingCancellationErrorwhen the surrounding task is cancelled — gets classified as a retryable.networkerror, so a cancelledxtool setupperforms one extra fetch beforeTask.sleeprethrows. The unwrappedCancellationErrorthen correctly escapes SDKBuilder'scatch let error as SDKGitHubDownloadError, so cancellation still propagates; anif error is CancellationError { throw error }before wrapping would just skip the pointless retry.
The test coverage is what I'd have asked for anyway: 404-no-retry with attempt counting, 503-then-success with sleep counting, transport-error wrapping, and body passthrough through the dependency-injected client. The scripted client conforming to both HTTPClientProtocol and ClientTransport is a clean way to plug into withDependencies.
A connection drop while SDKBuilder streamed the toolset or OpenAppleMacros body happened after the downloader had returned, so it was neither retried nor reported with the artifact and URL. The downloader now reads each attempt's full body into memory and reports progress while it does. A failed attempt's partial bytes are dropped before the next one, and a body that keeps failing surfaces as the artifact's network error. SDKBuilder pipes the returned data into tar or writes it to the macros binary. Cancellation is rethrown instead of being retried as a network error, and maxAttempts below 1 is rejected with a precondition. Thanks @rahul05ranjan. c65f89e moves the body read inside the retry boundary, per the CodeRabbit thread: each attempt reads the whole artifact before it counts as a success, a mid-body failure drops the partial bytes and retries, and a body that keeps failing surfaces as the artifact's network error with its URL. It also takes two of your points: |
xtool setupalready downloads the Darwin toolset and OpenAppleMacros before it extracts Xcode.xip, but a failed GitHub fetch still looks like a bad XIP. Macros used the same "Could not fetch toolset" wording. This names the artifact and URL, retries 429/5xx and network errors (not 404), and tells you the XIP is not the cause so you do not re-download Xcode.
