What does this PR do?

Stops the packer from discarding Info.plist values the user declared, and gives app extensions the platform keys Xcode gives them.

  • UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities was overwritten with [arm64], so values such as metal from the user's Info.plist were lost. arm64 is now merged into what is declared, in either form the key accepts (array of names, or dictionary of name to Bool).
  • CFBundleSupportedPlatforms (derived from the triple since tests: derive CFBundleSupportedPlatforms from the build triple #289) and the merged UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities are now also set on app extensions, and extensions get UIDeviceFamily = [1, 2] when they do not declare one. That is what Xcode writes into an extension's Info.plist.
  • LSRequiresIPhoneOS stays on the application only.

The logic moves to Packer.platformInfoPlist(_:type:triple:) so it can be unit tested.

How was it tested?

  • swift build --product xtool and swift test on Linux (Podman, Swift 6.4, XTL_CI=1): Test run with 19 tests in 0 suites passed, with 5 new tests: user capabilities kept, arm64 as the default, arm64 not duplicated, dictionary form merged, keys set on app extensions.
  • SwiftLint 0.65.1 --strict: 0 violations.
  • Real build on Linux with a Darwin SDK from Xcode 27.1 (xtool new Hello plus a widget extension, with metal declared in the user Info.plists): in the .ipa, app and extension have UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities = [arm64, metal], CFBundleSupportedPlatforms = [iPhoneOS] and UIDeviceFamily = [1, 2]; LSRequiresIPhoneOS is on the app only.
  • A production Tauri app (app plus WidgetKit extension) packed with this change installed on an iPhone (iOS 27) and was accepted by App Store Connect (TestFlight builds VALID).

Not tested: XcodePacker (generate-xcode-project) is not touched.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Packaged products now include supported-platform and required arm64 capability metadata while preserving valid existing capability settings.
    • Packaged applications include the required iOS marker.
    • App extensions declare support for both iPhone and iPad; narrower device-family settings are widened when needed. Application device-family settings remain unchanged.

UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities was overwritten with [arm64], dropping
values such as metal from the user's Info.plist. Merge arm64 into
whatever is declared (array or dictionary form). Also set
CFBundleSupportedPlatforms and the default UIDeviceFamily on app
extensions, as Xcode does.

📝 Walkthrough

Packer now builds platform plist metadata for every product type. It preserves supported capability declarations while ensuring arm64, sets application-specific metadata, and ensures app extensions include both iPhone and iPad device families. Tests cover these plist values.

Packer applies platform metadata to every product. It preserves supported array or dictionary capability values while adding arm64. Applications receive LSRequiresIPhoneOS; app extensions receive device families 1 and 2. Tests cover capability normalization and platform-specific plist values.

App Review requires app extensions to target both iPhone and iPad,
whatever the containing app targets. Merge 1 and 2 into any declared
UIDeviceFamily and warn on stderr when the declared value was narrower.

Reviewed statically — no Swift toolchain on my machine (ARM Linux), so I traced the paths rather than re-running the tests. The test expectations do match the implementation on read-through.

I traced the user plist path first: Planner loads the user's Info.plist via PropertyListSerialization and merges it over the defaults with the user winning (Planner.swift:203), so the packer really was the place where ["arm64"] clobbered declared capabilities — the old call site assigned it unconditionally for applications. The new platformInfoPlist handles both documented forms of the key (array and name-to-Bool dictionary), and the array/dict/no-value paths each line up with the new test cases. LSRequiresIPhoneOS staying application-only, and the extension keys being added, match what Xcode writes.

Two nits on requiredDeviceCapabilities (Packer.swift:244):

  • A value that casts to neither form (a plain string, or an array of non-strings) silently becomes ["arm64"] — the user's declared value is dropped with no notice, while universalDeviceFamily does warn when it widens. A warning or error for the unrecognized case would keep the diagnostics consistent.
  • In dictionary form, "arm64": false is silently flipped to true. Defensible since it's a hard requirement, but worth a doc comment because it overrides an explicit user declaration.

One question on the extension widening: the comment says App Review requires extensions to be universal, so a deliberately iPad-only extension (UIDeviceFamily [2]) gets widened to [1, 2] with a warning. Is that an App Store policy you have a reference for, or following Xcode's default of TARGETED_DEVICE_FAMILY = "1,2" for extension targets? The behavior looks right either way; I'm just checking the stated justification.

Heads-up on merge logistics: #323 also modifies this same var info block in pack() (it appends the DT* keys right after). Semantically the two compose cleanly — #323 only fills nil keys, so they can't fight over values — but whichever merges second will need a small rebase.

Warn on stderr when UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities has an unrecognized
shape and falls back to ["arm64"], and when "arm64": false is flipped
to true. Document that arm64 overrides an explicit declaration, and
cite the App Extension Programming Guide for the universal device
family requirement.

Thanks. On the question: it comes from Apple's App Extension Programming Guide (https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/General/Conceptual/ExtensibilityPG/ExtensionCreation.html). The section "Ensure Your iOS App Extension Works on All Devices" says "You must ensure that your submitted app extension is universal: it must work on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad", and the same page has an "Important" note: "To pass App Review, you must specify "iPhone/iPad" (sometimes called universal) as the targeted device family for your app extension, no matter which targeted device family you choose for your containing app." It also says the Xcode extension templates are set up for the universal family, so this matches Xcode's default too, though I did not find a source naming the exact build setting value. Caveat: the guide is archived, and that same note announces that a future iOS update would run an extension only on the devices its containing app supports, while recommending universal. If you would rather warn than widen, that is a small change. The code comment now cites the guide.

Both nits are in c77ee7a: a UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities value that is neither an array of strings nor a dictionary now warns on stderr (like the UIDeviceFamily one) and falls back to ["arm64"], and "arm64": false warns when it is flipped to true, with the doc comment saying arm64 overrides an explicit declaration. Tests cover both.
