What?

Make wp media replace write the replacement over the attachment's existing file by default, so the attachment's path and URL stay the same. Refuse an in-place replacement when the file type differs from the attachment, and add a --new-file-name flag that restores the previous sideload behavior.

Why?

wp media replace sent the replacement through wp_handle_sideload(), which stores it in the current uploads directory (usually YYYY/MM). The attachment kept its ID, but _wp_attached_file and wp_get_attachment_url() changed. Links that the block editor writes to the media file, and any other direct links, then broke.

The expected result is an in-place replacement that keeps the old path. A replacement with a different extension cannot be written in place, because the server would send the new bytes with the old file extension and Content-Type. The command therefore stops with an error in that case, and the user can opt in to a new name when a new URL is acceptable.

Closes: #274

How?

  • Resolve the current file and metadata before the download, so a failure leaves no temporary file behind.
  • Add replace_file_in_place(): validate with wp_check_filetype_and_ext(), compare the MIME type with the existing attachment, enforce the uploads-directory boundary, run the wp_handle_upload_prefilter hook, check the multisite quota, then write.
  • Add atomic_replace(): copy to a temporary file in the same directory, apply FS_CHMOD_FILE, then rename over the destination. On filesystems that cannot rename over an existing file, back up the destination first and restore it if the second rename fails.
  • Add reconcile_attachment_path() for big-image -scaled files. Keep the full-resolution file at the existing URL, move or discard the generated -scaled sibling, and update the recorded dimensions and filesize.
  • Add get_metadata_paths() and a $keep_paths argument to remove_old_images(), so cleanup never deletes a file that the new metadata references.
  • Defer deletion of old sizes and full-size files until metadata generation succeeds.
  • Add --new-file-name to keep the old sideload behavior, and document the new default, the type check, and the big-image handling in the docblock and README.
  • Add Behat coverage for in-place replacement, custom upload folders, big-image scaling in both directions, file-type mismatches, and the opt-out flag.

Testing Instructions

  1. Run composer install.
  2. Run composer lint.
  3. Run composer lint-gherkin.
  4. Run composer phpcs -- src/Media_Command.php.
  5. Run composer phpstan.
  6. Run composer behat -- features/media-replace.feature and confirm all 14 scenarios pass.
  7. Manual check: import an image and note wp post meta get <id> _wp_attached_file and wp eval 'echo wp_get_attachment_url( <id> );'. Run wp media replace <id> <other.jpg>. Confirm both values are unchanged.
  8. Manual folder check: move an attachment into 2023/05, replace it, and confirm the file and URL stay in 2023/05.
  9. Manual mismatch check: create a PNG attachment, try to replace it with a JPG, confirm the error names --new-file-name, then confirm --new-file-name succeeds.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • media replace now replaces an attachment’s existing file by default, preserving its path and URL. Use --new-file-name to save the replacement under its own name and update the URL.
    • Replacements support scaled and unscaled images. The command rejects incompatible file types and files outside the uploads directory.
    • --skip-delete preserves previous files as well as thumbnails.
  • Documentation
    • Updated usage guidance and examples, including notes on large images and possible stale image sizes if metadata generation fails.

`wp media replace` sideloaded the replacement into the current uploads
directory, so the attachment kept its ID but its path and URL changed.
Existing links to the file, such as those the block editor writes, then
broke.

Write the replacement over the attachment's existing file by default. The
command validates the file like a normal upload and refuses an in-place
replacement when the file type does not match the attachment, because the
old extension cannot serve the new bytes. Add `--new-file-name` to keep
the old sideload behavior when a new URL is wanted.

Handle big-image `-scaled` files so the URL stays the same, and delete old
sizes only after the new metadata is written. Writes are atomic, so a
failed copy cannot truncate the existing file.

Add Behat coverage for in-place replacement, custom upload folders,
big-image scaling, file-type mismatches, and the opt-out flag.

Walkthrough

wp media replace now overwrites the attached file in place by default, preserving its path and URL. The --new-file-name option stores the replacement under its own name. Image metadata reconciliation and previous-file cleanup now account for the replacement path.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f98ca

By default, wp media replace now keeps the attachment URL but can leave the replaced file unreadable by the web server. That happens when WP-CLI runs as a different user from the web server, and the URL then returns 403. The static-analysis errors can also fail the project's test suite. Fix both before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Replace media files in place to preserve attachment URLs" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe wp media replace overwriting the existing attachment file by default, which keeps its path and URL. The --new-file-name opt-out and the linked issue about broken direct links support this reading. The title is one short sentence, uses no file lists or vague terms, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #274 requires in-place replacement that preserves the attachment path, including an existing custom upload folder. The command now preserves the existing path by default and provides --new-file-name for the prior behavior. replace_file_in_place() validates the replacement, checks the MIME type, enforces the uploads boundary, applies the upload prefilter, checks quota, and replaces the file. The feature changes cover unchanged paths and URLs, custom folders, type mismatches, big-image cases, failed validation, and the opt-out flag.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #274. Atomic replacement, delayed cleanup, metadata-path protection, and big-image reconciliation support safe in-place replacement. README and docblock updates describe the new behavior. The added Behat scenarios test the implementation and its error paths. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. 📢 Thoughts on this report? Let us know!

The big-image scenarios call `wp_get_original_image_path()`, which
WordPress added in 5.3, and they assert that the pre-scaled master is
removed during a replace. Both assumptions do not hold on older WordPress
versions, so tag them `@require-wp-5.3`.

Add scenarios for a disallowed file type, an attachment path outside the
uploads directory, and an upload prefilter error. These cover the new
error branches, which the Behat coverage run did not reach.
`wp media replace` supports attachments without image metadata, but no
test reached that path. A text attachment has no `file` key, so
`get_metadata_paths()` and `reconcile_attachment_path()` return early.

Add a scenario that replaces a text attachment in place. It also checks
that the new bytes are written over the existing file.
WordPress versions before 6.0 return empty metadata for non-image
attachments, so the non-image scenario warns on older versions and fails
the no-STDERR assertion. Replace it with the failed download path, which
does not depend on the WordPress version.

Mock a 404 response and assert the error and exit code.
`wp media replace` stops when the attachment has no `_wp_attached_file`
meta. The guard was added with the in-place replace work, but no test
reached it.

Set web-readable permissions on the replaced file.

tempnam() creates the temporary file with mode 0600. rename() keeps that mode on the destination. The code calls chmod() only when FS_CHMOD_FILE is defined. WordPress defines FS_CHMOD_FILE inside WP_Filesystem() or in wp-config.php. A normal wp media replace run calls neither, so the replaced file usually stays at 0600.

Operators often run WP-CLI as a deploy user or as root, and the web server runs as a different user. In that setup, the web server cannot read the file. The preserved attachment URL then returns 403. The same defect affects the move onto the existing -scaled path in reconcile_attachment_path(), because that move also uses atomic_replace().

wp_handle_sideload() derives the mode from the parent directory: stat( dirname( $new_file ) )['mode'] & 0000666. Apply the same rule here, or keep the mode of the existing destination file.
