Restrict what CMS templates may call in the Twig sandbox - #1555
The Twig security policy decides what a template may call by name, and is never handed the arguments of a call — so a method that is harmless in itself but runs a callable it is given cannot be judged by name alone. That is the shape behind most of what follows.
The policy now follows __call forwarding for Halcyon models and for components, the way it already did for the Eloquent family, so a name refused on the receiver stays refused when it is reached through a forwarder. CmsCompoundObject's passthru dispatch goes through the proxy layer rather than onto a raw collection, and stripCallables() tests the callable form of composite values as well as scalars.
Upgrade notes:
tap(), pipe(), when() and unless() are refused on every object a template holds, including Laravel's proxy form {{ posts.when(cond).sortBy('x') }}, which a template expresses with {% if %} instead. The Stringablewhen*() family goes too.
A wildcard markup helper refuses an argument that is, or contains at any depth, a PHP callable that is not a plain string, and refuses a string in a position the resolved method declares as callable/Closure. A list of exactly two strings is the one exception, because that is how a template writes an ordinary short list and PHP reads any such list as callable when its first value names a class that can dispatch the second — so {{ html_ul(post.tags) }} and {{ array_only(map, keys) }} keep working whatever their values spell. The callback positions this closes belong to array_map, array_first, array_last, array_where and array_build: a template that named a function there needs a Twig filter or a component method instead. This applies in every Twig environment the helpers are registered in — mail templates and .htm views included — because the guard travels with the helper rather than with the sandbox. A variadic target keeps its own classification for the arguments its signature folds into one parameter, so array_cross_join(listA, listB) accepts ordinary lists in every position.
Attachment fromPost, fromFile, fromStorage, fromData, fromUrl, setDataAttribute, deleteThumbs and getDisk are refused. Reading an attachment is unaffected.
this.session.put, forget and pull are refused for keys beginning _, admin_auth, winter_auth, login_, password_hash_ or widget., including the array forms and a key passed as a named argument. widget itself is refused too, since the store resolves keys with Arr::get() and a value written to the container is read back under the dotted key. The _ prefix is wider than the framework's own keys, so a theme that used underscore-prefixed names as its own convention has to rename them.
Query builder and Eloquent builder: the join/union family, selectSub, fromQuery, searchWhere, withCasts, setQuery, the aggregate and index-hint methods, and macroCall on any object. Ordinary reads on the model's own table are unaffected.
Halcyon write methods and from() are refused through a page, layout or partial; the read API is unaffected. A component that defines its own run, runPage, renderPage, renderPartial, renderContent, getLoader or combineAssets and calls it from a template is now refused.
Paginators: render() and links() accept no view name, a pagination:: view, or a view under any registered namespace's own pagination directory — system::pagination.simple-default, or acme.plugin::pagination.custom for a plugin or theme shipping its own. Any other name is refused, as is any name containing .. or either path separator. defaultView, defaultSimpleView, viewFactory, the use*() presets, mapInto() and pipeInto() are refused on a paginator.
Fixed by the shared guard: this.page.lists('url'), this.page.where('url', ...), this.theme.listPages().where('url', ...) and withComponent('session') return correct values again — the proxy had been nulling those names because a global url() or session() helper makes them look callable. A multi-sort specification (sortBy([['date', 'desc'], ['title', 'asc']])) also survives, since sortByMany() reads each pair with data_get() and never invokes it, while a callable nested inside a pair is still stripped. A multi-level groupBy() whose first two keys happen to name an aliased facade and a method on it is refused rather than grouped; that shape did not group before this change either, because Collection::groupBy() treats a callable array as the grouping callback instead of a list of keys.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Security
Strengthened safeguards for CMS templates, including restrictions on file writes, access beyond the active theme, unsafe queries, callback execution, and macro calls.
Protected reserved session values and restricted unsafe attachment operations and pagination-view settings.
Added safeguards for method calls and callable arguments passed through template functions and filters.
Bug Fixes
Preserved supported read-only queries, pagination, and normal page, query, and partial rendering.
Improved validation of wildcard template functions and filters, including calls with variadic callback parameters.
The Twig security policy decides what a template may call by name, and it is never handed the arguments of a call, so a method that runs a callable, instantiates a class named by a string, or turns a string into raw SQL cannot be judged from its name alone. This change closes the gaps that follow from that. The policy now follows `__call` forwarding for Halcyon models and for components, the way it already did for the database layer; the query-builder groups cover the join/union family and the remaining raw-SQL and callable-executor methods; the wildcard markup helpers (`str_*`, `array_*`, `url_*`, `html_*`, `form_*`) refuse callable arguments and macro registration; attachments and the session get explicit surfaces; and the collection and paginator proxies now share one guard, so their lists cannot drift apart again. Paginator `render()`/`links()` are limited to the pagination views, because a view is plain PHP that runs outside the sandbox.
The read-only template API is unchanged: collections, paginators, Halcyon queries, components, attachments' own metadata and the session helpers all keep working, and two collection calls that had been returning wrong results through the proxy are fixed on the way.
Behaviour changes:
- `tap()`, `pipe()`, `when()` and `unless()` are refused on every object a template holds, and so is the `Stringable` `when*()` family (`str_of(x).whenNotEmpty(...)`). This includes Laravel's proxy form, `{{ posts.when(cond).sortBy('x') }}`, which a template expresses with `{% if %}` instead. The four duplicates in the query-builder group were removed, since they are now covered globally.
- A wildcard markup helper refuses an argument that is, or contains at any depth, a PHP callable that is not a plain string, and refuses a string in a position the resolved method declares as `callable`/`Closure`. A list of exactly two strings is the one exception: that is how a template writes an ordinary short list, and PHP reads any such list as callable when its first value names a class that can dispatch the second, so `{{ html_ul(post.tags) }}` and `{{ array_only(map, keys) }}` keep working whatever their values spell. It is still refused in the positions the resolved method declares or names as a callback. `str_macro`, `html_macro`, `url_macro`, `array_macro` and the `mixin`/`flushMacros` forms are refused. Calling a macro a plugin registered still works, as do the helpers with the optional callback omitted and string arguments the target never invokes — `array_sort(x, "n")`, `array_key_by(x, "id")`, `str_replace("trim", "X", s)`, `array_get(stats, "count")`. The callback positions this closes belong to `array_map`, `array_first`, `array_last`, `array_where` and `array_build`, so a template that named a function there — `array_map(items, "strtoupper")` — needs a Twig filter or a component method instead. That applies in **every** Twig environment the markup helpers are registered in, mail templates and `.htm` views included, not only CMS templates, since the guard travels with the helper rather than with the sandbox. A variadic target keeps its own classification for the arguments its signature folds into one parameter, so `array_cross_join(listA, listB)` accepts ordinary lists in every position.
- Attachment `fromPost`, `fromFile`, `fromStorage`, `fromData`, `fromUrl`, `setDataAttribute`, `deleteThumbs` and `getDisk` are refused. Reading an attachment — `path`, `getFilename()`, `getExtension()`, `getContents()`, `getThumb()` — is unaffected.
- `this.session.put`, `forget` and `pull` are refused for keys beginning `_`, `admin_auth`, `winter_auth`, `login_`, `password_hash_` or `widget.`, including the array forms and a key passed as a named argument. `widget` itself is refused too: the session store resolves keys with `Arr::get()`, so a value written to the container is read back under the dotted key. Other keys, and `get`/`has`/`flush`, are unaffected; the `_` prefix is wider than the framework's own keys, so a theme that used underscore-prefixed names as its own convention has to rename them. The same six-method surface — `put`, `get`, `has`, `forget`, `flush`, `pull` — now also applies to a session store object handed to a template by a plugin or component, so `token()`, `all()`, `getId()`, `flash()`, `invalidate()`, `regenerate()`, `migrate()` and `save()` are refused there too, as they already were on `this.session`.
- Query builder: `join`, `joinWhere`, `leftJoin`, `leftJoinWhere`, `rightJoin`, `rightJoinWhere`, `crossJoin`, `union`, `unionAll`, `selectSub`, `selectConcat`, `aggregate`, `numericAggregate`, `lock`, `inRandomOrder`, `useIndex`, `forceIndex`, `ignoreIndex`, `whereRowValues`, `orWhereRowValues`, `mergeWheres` and `beforeQuery`. Eloquent builder: `fromQuery`, `searchWhere`, `orSearchWhere`, `withCasts`, `withAggregate` and `setQuery`. `macroCall`, the public alias of the already-blocked `__call`, is refused on any object. `count()`, `sum()`, `avg()`, `min()`, `max()`, `pluck()`, `where()`, `orderBy()`, `exists()` and `paginate()` on the model's own table are unaffected, and so are the same method names on a collection.
- Halcyon: the Halcyon Builder's write methods and `from()` are refused when reached through a page, layout or partial. The read API — `find()`, `newQuery()`, `whereFileName()`, `lists()` — is unaffected.
- Components: the CMS controller's blocked methods are refused when reached through a component. A component's own methods stay callable, but a component that defines its own `run`, `runPage`, `renderPage`, `renderPartial`, `renderContent`, `getLoader` or `combineAssets` and calls it from a template will now be refused.
- Paginators: `mapInto()` and `pipeInto()` are refused on the paginator path, as they already were on collections. `render()` and `links()` accept no view name, a `pagination::` view, or a view under any registered namespace's own `pagination` directory — `system::pagination.simple-default`, or `acme.plugin::pagination.custom` for a plugin or theme that ships its own — whichever way the name is passed. Any other name is refused, and so is a name that could leave those namespaces, which is one containing `..` or either path separator. A plugin may still register its markup as the default instead (`Paginator::defaultView()` in a service provider or plugin `boot()`), which a plain `{{ posts.render() }}` then renders. Which view a paginator uses is that application-level decision, so `defaultView`, `defaultSimpleView`, `viewFactory`, `viewFactoryResolver`, `useTailwind`, `useBootstrap`, `useBootstrapThree`, `useBootstrapFour` and `useBootstrapFive` are refused on a paginator.
- Fixed: `this.page.lists('url')`, `this.page.where('url', ...)`, `this.theme.listPages().where('url', ...)` and `withComponent('session')` return their correct values again. A multi-sort specification — `sortBy([['date', 'desc'], ['title', 'asc']])` — also survives: `sortByMany()` reads each pair with `data_get()` and never invokes it, so the pair is data, while a callable nested inside a pair is still stripped. A multi-level `groupBy()` whose first two keys happen to name an aliased facade and a method on it is refused rather than grouped; that shape did not group before this change either, because `Collection::groupBy()` treats a callable array as the grouping callback instead of a list of keys. The proxy had been nulling those names because a global `url()` or `session()` helper makes them look like callables; `withComponent()`'s second argument is a real callback and is still stripped.

`checkWildcardMethod()` refused a string at the index a `callable` parameter was recorded under, but a variadic one declares every position from that index onwards. `?callable ...$fns` called as `(null, 'system')` left the recorded index null and the string in the next, where nothing checked it. Nothing in core declares that shape — all five wildcard targets (Arr, Str, Url, Html, Form) have no typed variadic — but a plugin registering its own wildcard could.
Also swaps `Event::flush()` for `Event::forget()` in the test theme helper: `flush()` dispatches `<event>_pushed` and removes no listener, so a plugin listening on `cms.theme.getActiveTheme` could still override the fixture theme.
To be completely honest, I think this Twig policy is getting way too over-complicated and trying to fix an issue that is going to keep reappearing as Laravel (and ourselves) change the underlying API. I'm also concerned that the more checks we add to it, the more we drain performance on page rendering.
I think that we may need to bite the bullet and completely sanitize objects through a json_encode / json_decode loops and only allow components to be objects (and even then, limit them to public API and possibly sanitize the output of the returned values as well).
I know that it's a breaking change, but we can always communicate it in advance.
I tested this on a production site (wip/1.3, Laravel 12), where it applies cleanly:
Pages: about 300 frontend pages crawled, plus the logged-in account, order and invoice pages.
Mail: all 37 mail templates rendered.
Nothing broke there, and none of that site's templates use anything this PR refuses.
I also ran the cases below on develop at 4ab9e5a1 against the PR head at 3e1bbaa4. Each one renders on develop and changes with the PR. They all look intentional from the code, but none of them is spelled out in the upgrade notes:
A two-string list whose first value names a facade alias is now dropped silently inside collection and paginator arguments.
Example:{{ this.page.newQuery().get().whereIn('fileName', ['Event', 'p1.htm'])|length }} gives 1 on develop and 0 with the PR. With ['Nope', 'p1.htm'] it gives 1 in both.
Cause:SafeProxy::stripCallables() checks is_callable() before recursing, which the docblock explains.
Why it matters: the notes only mention the multi-level groupBy() case. A tag or category list that happens to contain a word like Event, File, Mail or Config will quietly return nothing. Throwing instead of nulling would at least make this visible.
Twig arrow functions are refused by the wildcard helpers.
Example:{{ array_first([1, 2, 3], x => x > 1) }} renders 2 on develop and throws Passing a callback to "first" through a wildcard markup extension is blocked with the PR.
Why it matters: this follows from the "a PHP callable that is not a plain string" rule, since an arrow function compiles to a Closure. But template authors won't see it that way, so it's worth naming arrow functions in the upgrade note.
inRandomOrder() without a seed is refused.
Example:{{ this.theme.getCustomData().newQuery().inRandomOrder().count() }} renders on develop and throws with the PR. The method is blocked on the query builder list, and the upgrade notes don't mention it.
Why it matters: "random related posts" is a common theme pattern. Could the argument-less form stay allowed?
The new data providers aren't static, which matters for 1.3.
Affected:variadicCallableArgumentsProvider, namedSessionKeyProvider, builderEscapeProvider, paginatorInstantiationProvider and namedPaginatorViewProvider.
Effect: PHPUnit 11 (wip/1.3) errors with "Data Provider method … is not static", so those tests will fail once develop is merged into 1.3.
Fix: none of them use $this, so they can be marked static. With that change the tests pass on PHPUnit 9 (develop + this PR) and on PHPUnit 11 (1.3).
I've sent a few other findings through a security advisory.
A string naming a PHP function reached `Str::createUuidsUsingSequence()`'s untyped `$whenMissing`, which calls it outright, so `str_create_uuids_using_sequence([], 'getenv')` put the whole process environment into the next `str_uuid()`. The guard had assumed every untyped callback was a hybrid that ignores a string the way `useAsCallable()` does; it now refuses a string that `is_callable()` at a position the callee names as a callback, and still accepts a name the callee reads as data, because a column or key name is not a PHP callable.
`__get`, `__set`, `__isset` and `__unset` are refused on every object. The property policy is only consulted for a property *access*, so calling the accessors by name went around it, and `__get` is an object factory besides: `Collection::__get` hands back a `HigherOrderCollectionProxy`, which is none of the classes the policy lists, so `rows.__get('each').delete()` deleted every row the template was holding.
`forceSave()` and `saveInternal()` are refused on both model families, along with `create()`, `offsetSet()`, `offsetUnset()`, `setDatasource()` and the datasource, cache and dispatcher resolvers on the Halcyon side. Storm's validation trait is a second entry point to the same write, and the Halcyon model is what a page, layout and partial are, so `this.page.create(...)` wrote a template file of its own.
The model event registrars are refused on both model families. Each stores the callback it is handed and the dispatcher resolves it later, so `this.page.fetched('Class@method')` instantiated an arbitrary class and called it on the next fetch. `withoutTimestamps()` and `withoutBroadcasting()` go too, since they run the callback straight away - the same shape as the already-blocked `withoutEvents()`.
`Cms\Classes\CodeBase` joins the forwarder map. Its `__call` hands anything it does not implement to the controller and `Controller::getPageObject()` gives one out, so `this.controller.getPageObject().getLoader()` reached a method blocked on the controller itself.

Plain column names that are PHP function names are now refused in hybrid callback positions.
Line 429 refuses any string that passes is_callable() at a callback-named position. That includes callback, keyBy and sortBy. These are the hybrid parameters that the comments at lines 423-428 and 553-557 say read a string as a key.
Many ordinary column or key names are also PHP function names. Examples are date, key, count, file, link, next, time and max. Calls such as array_sort(posts, 'date') or array_key_by(rows, 'key') therefore throw SecurityNotAllowedMethodError. The comment at lines 427-428 says such names still work, but they do not.
Refuse a string only where the callee runs it. For example, keep a per-method list of hybrid parameters (Arr::sort, Arr::sortDesc, Arr::keyBy) that are exempt from the string check. Keep the check for outright invokers such as Str::createUuidsUsingSequence.

The advisories I filed all seem to be fixed on the latest commit (I had 3 more pending that didn't go through because of github rate limits).
Apart from points 1, 2 and 3 this LGTM 👍🏻

The Twig security policy decides what a template may call by name, and is never handed the arguments of a call — so a method that is harmless in itself but runs a callable it is given cannot be judged by name alone. That is the shape behind most of what follows.

TheStringablewhen*()family goes too.callable/Closure. The callback positions this closes belong toarray_map,array_first,array_last,array_whereandarray_build: a template that named a function there needs a Twig filter or a component method instead.
