perf(gpui): parse each agent activity record once when it arrives - #138
Stack: 2 of 2. Base: brandon/dev-3012-activity-bubbles-cache, the layer 1 PR.
Linear: DEV-3013
Why
Agent activity records are stored as JSON text and parsed again on every read. On the selection path, a read goes string → parse (raw_records) → to_string_pretty for each batch child → parse again (request_activity). Layer 1 stops this from running on every frame. This layer makes each run that remains cheap.
What changes
Record::new, used by admit for both live and history records, parses the record once. It reuses the JSON that receive / show_history_page already parsed, and stores the result as record.events: one request::Event per batch child, or one for the envelope itself.
Each Event holds the channel, kind, a valid turn id, the seq (kept only within 0..2^53), the timestamp, and the trigger ids. Trigger ids are kept only on turn_started events.
request_activity reads record.events and does no JSON parsing or serialization. Its selection rules are unchanged: admission at received_at + 5000, uncertain detection, seq checks, and the first admitted terminal event.
requested() in mod.rs re-parsed every live record on each publish. It now reads events too.
plaintext and raw_records are unchanged, so the Raw view shows the same output.
Behaviour change:request_activity with an empty channel now returns an empty selection. No caller passes an empty channel. request_work only passes channels taken from channel_ids, and those are never empty.
Not converted:current::working_details, activity_preview and external_plugins/observed.rs still parse plaintext. They aren't on the per-frame path that caused the lag. They can follow if a profile shows them.
The 4 failing tests are the same environment-dependent tests that fail on main; see the layer 1 PR.
New tests:
selection_matches_reading_the_json_on_every_edge compares the new selection with the old JSON-based logic on 2 agents × 2 channels × 9 id sets. The inputs cover invalid JSON, bad batches, turn ids of 0, 256 and 257 bytes, seq at −1, 2^53−1, 2^53 and 1.5, timestamps exactly at the 5000 ms admission limit and 1 ms past it, and duplicate starts.
selection_reads_batch_children_in_their_own_channel checks batch children in two channels.
Each of these mutations made a new test fail: moving the admission limit, dropping the channel filter, and keeping trigger ids on every kind.

Bug Fixes
Agent activity now selects matching events by agent and channel, including events contained in batched requests.
Activity selection handles missing channels, unusable turn IDs, malformed input, and timestamp boundaries more consistently.
Removed agents are stopped after servers with no active entries or previews are unregistered.
Agent activity records were kept as JSON text and parsed again on every
read. Selecting the turns a message started (request_activity) asked
raw_records for the channel's entries, which parsed each record and
pretty-printed each batch child, then parsed that output again for the
turn id, seq, kind, timestamp and triggers. The turn-start index built
on each publish also re-parsed every live record. With layer 1 the
bubble answers are remembered per snapshot, but each new snapshot still
paid string -> parse -> pretty-print -> parse for every record.
A record now keeps the few fields selection needs, read from the JSON it
was already parsed into on arrival: for the envelope, or each batch
child, its channel, kind, usable turn id, bounded seq, timestamp and (for
turn starts only) its string trigger ids. Events naming no channel, or
with no usable turn id that are not turn starts, are not kept, as no
selection can read them. request_activity and the turn-start index read
these fields with no JSON parsing or serialization. The plaintext and
the Raw view's output are unchanged.
Selections are unchanged: a test compares request_activity against the
previous parse-based reading over batches, other channels, invalid or
non-object JSON, missing and oversized turn ids, seq and timestamp
bounds, and duplicate starts. An empty channel, which no caller asks
for, now selects nothing instead of reading unscoped records.

Record now stores parsed request events. Record construction derives event and channel data from raw JSON. Test helpers initialize the new field. The text validation rule is unchanged.

request_activity filters cached events by agent and channel. Requested-ID selection uses cached turn-start events and their triggers. Tests compare selection against results reread from raw records.
Codex Agent Shutdown Ordering

Summary
Unregister idle servers before stopping agents apps/buzz-gpui/crates/app/src/agent_plugins/codex/runtime.rs
sync collects removed agents, unregisters idle servers, then stops the collected agents.
This change makes agent activity selection cheaper by parsing each record once when it arrives, with selection rules reported as unchanged. It also reorders Codex agent shutdown so idle servers are unregistered first. No concrete regression was identified, so the change looks safe to merge.
