perf(gpui): compute agent activity bubbles only when activity changes - #137
Stack: 1 of 2 (bottom). Base: main. Layer 2 builds on this one.
Linear: DEV-3012
Why
Typing in the desktop app lags while an agent shows working dots. A sample of the idle app showed 50–90% CPU. About 32% of the main thread was in ChannelPage::render, mostly in agent_activity::request::request_work.
The dots request a frame continuously, so every frame repeats this chain:
Bubbles::of calls message_activity for each candidate message, and each one calls request_work.
request_work calls request_activity for each agent.
request_activity calls raw_records, which parses every one of that agent's records from JSON.
Records change only when new activity arrives, so almost all of this repeats work from the previous frame.
What changes
A new Snapshot.memo caches the request_work results, keyed by channel and ids, and the per-channel message bubble map (request::message_works).
The cache lives on the snapshot, and a new snapshot is published whenever activity changes. A changed snapshot always starts with an empty cache, so cached results can't go stale.
Cloning a Memo gives an empty one, and memos always compare equal. Snapshot equality and change detection are unaffected.
Each cache map is cleared once it reaches 256 entries.
Bubbles::of now calls message_works. The other callers (bubbled_agents, message_activity, thread_working_agents) already go through request_work, so they pick up the cache without changes.
The 4 failing tests also fail on unchanged main on the same machine. They depend on the local environment: the Claude install, the user's keymap and the running app's single-instance socket. They are claude_code::e2e::a_mention_runs_a_claude_turn_on_the_agents_host, shortcuts::tests::keymap_follows_overrides, single_instance::tests::reads_handoffs_without_a_token and single_instance::tests::second_claim_forwards_to_the_first.
Not yet done: a profile of a running build. I'll run BUZZ_PERF=frames with an agent working before marking this ready.

Bug Fixes
Agent activity indicators now use activity data associated with the current snapshot, and refresh when new activity is published.
Performance
Repeated activity lookups within the same snapshot reuse previously computed results, which can reduce unnecessary work while browsing agent activity. Cached results are refreshed for a new snapshot, so updated activity remains visible.
Typing lagged while an agent showed working dots in the open
conversation. The dots request a frame continuously, and every render
asked which agents handle which messages: request_work re-read and
re-parsed every live activity record for each candidate message, so the
main thread spent about a third of its time there (DEV-3012).
An agent activity snapshot is immutable and replaced as a whole when
anything changes, so request work worked out from one stays true for its
life. Each snapshot now carries a small memo of request_work answers
(by channel and message ids) and of each channel's message bubbles. The
memo starts empty on every new snapshot, is ignored by equality and
clones, and holds at most 256 answers per kind. Results are unchanged;
bubbles, composer replacements and thread summaries now recompute only
when activity changes.

Snapshots now own memoized request and message work. Request functions use the snapshot memo, and bubble construction obtains message work through the caching function. Tests cover cache reuse, refresh, size limits, cloning, and snapshot equality.
Snapshot now owns a request::Memo, initialized when Activity::publish creates a snapshot. Cloned memos start empty, and memo contents do not affect equality.
Cached request and message work apps/buzz-gpui/crates/app/src/agent_activity/request.rs, apps/buzz-gpui/crates/app/src/agent_activity/request/tests.rs
request_work memoizes results by channel and ordered message IDs. message_works caches nonempty activity for valid message IDs. Tests cover reuse, refresh, cache limits, and clone behavior.
The caching change appears mergeable after normal checks; no actionable behavior regression was identified.
