Summary

Sandbox sessions got instructions only for cluster diagnostics and sub-agents, and only when the matching credentials were mounted. An agent concluded it had no Linear access because nothing told it that enrolled services are reached through via; cluster.md mentions only Grafana.

This adds one guide, voltage/images/buzz-agent/environment.md, installed unconditionally into the Claude Code and Codex global instructions, the same way as the two existing guides. It covers:

  • run via capabilities and buzz --help before claiming no access, and say what was checked;
  • detect a Sandbox with KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST, not /var/run/secrets/kubernetes.io;
  • a via service acts as its own app identity, so say so when reporting a change made through it;
  • do not build or run untrusted repository code in a Pod that holds live credentials;
  • keep unfixed vulnerability details out of public places.

Changes: the new guide, a Dockerfile copy line, install_environment_guide in profile.py (called for both run and work), test-environment.py, its line in the images workflow, and a README note.

Testing

  • I ran the test script body locally against the repo's profile.py: it passes. With the install calls removed it fails with the guide-missing error, so it can fail.
  • Not run: the Docker image build and test-environment.py against the image, because the Pod has no Docker. CI runs it in the packaged tool tests.
  • Not covered by a test: the two call sites in main(). They sit beside the existing install_cluster_access calls, which have no test either.

Notes

  • Applies only to agents running this image. Local agents don't get the guide.
  • Advice to the model, not enforcement. The untrusted-code rule should also be enforced by the Pod setup.
  • Needs a human to test it end to end (build the image, start a session, read ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md). Left as a draft until then.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Buzz agent sessions and workers now receive an environment guide in their Claude Code and Codex instructions, whether or not cluster credentials are mounted.
    • The guide explains how to check the Sandbox environment, find and access enrolled services, and use the available Depot cache. It also covers identifying the service identity used for actions, handling live credentials carefully, and privately reporting vulnerabilities that remain unfixed.
    • Agent tool sessions now receive the Kubernetes service host when it is available.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The Buzz Agent image now includes an environment guide. Worker and harness startup append it to Claude Code and Codex instruction files. A Docker test checks the guide content, repeated installation, and startup ordering. The tool shell also forwards KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST when set.

Changes: Environment guide installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and package the guide
voltage/images/buzz-agent/environment.md, voltage/images/buzz-agent/Dockerfile.dockerignore, voltage/images/buzz-agent/Dockerfile, voltage/images/buzz-agent/README.md
The image packages the guide. It covers service access, Sandbox identification, service identity, untrusted code, and vulnerability reporting. The README describes adding the guide to session and worker instructions.
Install the guide during startup
voltage/images/buzz-agent/profile.py
The installer appends the guide to Claude Code and Codex instruction files. Worker and harness startup paths call the installer. The tool shell also receives KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST when it is set.
Verify guide installation
voltage/images/buzz-agent/test-environment.py, .github/workflows/voltage-agent-images.yml, voltage/images/buzz-agent/test-profile.py, voltage/images/buzz-agent/README.md
A Docker test checks guide content, repeated installation, and installation before child launch. The workflow and README include the test, and the profile test allows KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST among forwarded variables.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 3 files. Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

voltage/images/buzz-agent/environment.md is included in the build context
despite the broader voltage/ exclusion. Preserve the existing exclusions for
other files.

Review comments at @voltage/images/buzz-agent/environment.md:
- Line 5: Update the Depot access guidance in the environment documentation to
distinguish its configured build-cache integration, such as `depot gocache`,
from services accessed through `via <service> api ...`; do not describe Depot as
a `via` API capability or as unavailable when it lacks an `api` command.
- Line 8: Update the environment forwarding in profile.py so the MCP tool shell
receives KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST, and update the profile test to verify it is
forwarded; ensure the Sandbox check in environment.md uses this available
indicator rather than the unmounted Kubernetes secrets path.

Review comments at @voltage/images/buzz-agent/test-environment.py:
- Around line 25-26: Update the test around main() to exercise both the run and
work startup paths, asserting for each that guide installation occurs before its
child launches; ensure the assertions are bound to the production startup
behavior so removing either installation call makes the test fail.

Comment thread voltage/images/buzz-agent/Dockerfile Resolved
Sessions got instructions only for cluster diagnostics and sub-agents, and only
when credentials were mounted. An agent therefore concluded it had no Linear
access because nothing in its instructions said that enrolled services are
reached through via. Add one guide, installed unconditionally, covering via
discovery, Sandbox detection, app identities, untrusted code in a credentialed
Pod, and vulnerability reporting.

- Line 11: Update the `via` identity guidance to avoid assuming every credential
represents an app identity; have the agent report the identity configured for
the profile, or state that it is unknown when it cannot be determined.
- Line 5: Update the enrolled-services guidance in environment.md to use the
capability name discovered through `via capabilities` rather than assuming every
service has an `api` capability. Present `api` as an example and instruct agents
to invoke the listed working capability.

Review comments at @voltage/images/buzz-agent/test-profile.py:
- Line 115: Update the fixture and forwarding assertion in the test profile so
`KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST` is explicitly set in the test environment and its name
is required in `BUZZ_ACP_MCP_FORWARD_ENV`. Preserve the existing
model-forwarding and allowed-extra checks.
