fix(oauth): match an origin issuer with or without a trailing slash - #157
An authorization server named by a bare http(s) origin now accepts RFC 8414 / OIDC metadata whose issuer differs from it only by one trailing slash. With this, TinyMCP can sign in to TickTick's MCP server (https://mcp.ticktick.com/), as other MCP clients already can.
TickTick's protected-resource metadata names the authorization server https://ticktick.com/, while its RFC 8414 document says "issuer": "https://ticktick.com". metadata_matches_issuer compared the two strings exactly, rejected the metadata, the OIDC fallback returned 404, and OAuthFlow::begin failed with AuthDiscovery.
metadata_matches_issuer (transport/http/mod.rs) still tries an exact match first. It also accepts the metadata when the configured issuer parses as a bare http(s) origin (path /, no query, no fragment) and both issuers equal that origin with or without one trailing slash, reusing discovery::issuer_is_origin, the rule well-known discovery already applies. RFC 3986 §6.2.3 makes an empty http path equivalent to /, so this treats two spellings of one URL as one issuer; it does not loosen RFC 8414 §3.3 for issuers with a path.

API or behavior changes
No public API change. Behavior: metadata that was wrongly rejected is now accepted, only in the origin trailing-slash case. Issuers with a path still match only themselves (/tenant vs /tenant/ stays a mismatch), and scheme, host and port must still be identical. Not breaking.
cargo test --all-features: pass (tinymcp lib 1578, tinymcp-bus 153, integration and doc tests green)
Also RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo doc --no-deps --all-features: pass.
Tests
an_origin_issuer_matches_metadata_with_or_without_one_trailing_slash (unit): matches both directions and with an explicit port; rejects //, /tenant vs /tenant/, and a different host, scheme, port or a query.
an_origin_issuer_with_a_trailing_slash_accepts_metadata_without_one (transport): fetch_authorization_server_metadata("{origin}/") returns Ok against a server whose metadata issuer is {origin}.
an_authorization_server_named_with_a_trailing_slash_signs_in_through_its_origin_issuer (OAuth flow): a loopback server shaped like TickTick (401 Bearer with resource_metadata, authorization_servers: ["{origin}/"], RFC 8414 issuer {origin}, OIDC 404); OAuthFlow::begin registers a client and returns an {origin}/authorize?... URL with S256.
All three fail before the fix and pass after it. The existing metadata_issuer_matching_preserves_trailing_slash_identity still passes.
Documentation
Not needed: no public API or configuration change; the matching rule is described on metadata_matches_issuer.
Checklist
The change is focused on one logical change
No new #[allow(...)], #[ignore], or relaxed lints
No secrets, tokens, or .env contents in the diff or the description
Improved OAuth sign-in compatibility when an authorization server’s origin is advertised with or without a trailing slash. Metadata discovery and client registration can now proceed in this case.
OAuth issuer matching remains limited to equivalent bare origins; differences in host, scheme, port, or additional URL components are not treated as equivalent.
An authorization server named by a bare http(s) origin may publish RFC 8414
metadata whose issuer differs from that name only by one trailing slash.
TickTick's MCP server names `https://ticktick.com/` while its metadata says
`https://ticktick.com`; the strict comparison rejected the metadata and
sign-in failed with "no sign-in offered".
RFC 3986 section 6.2.3 makes an empty http path equivalent to "/", so these
are the same issuer rather than a loosening of RFC 8414 section 3.3. Exact
matching stays the rule; the origin equivalence reuses the rule well-known
discovery already applies, and issuers with a path still match only
themselves.

Pull request purpose (title): fix(oauth): match an origin issuer with or without a trailing slash. The description states that an authorization server named by a bare http(s) origin now accepts RFC 8414/OIDC metadata whose `issuer` differs only by one trailing slash, so TinyMCP can sign in to TickTick's MCP server. The latest-push delta is unavailable, so this describes the whole pull request rather than a push delta.

What changed
`metadata_matches_issuer` in `crates/tinymcp/src/transport/http/mod.rs` keeps exact string equality as its first check and adds a second acceptance path: if the configured issuer parses via the new `origin_of` helper as a bare http(s) origin with path `/` and no query or fragment, the metadata is accepted when both issuers equal that origin under the existing `discovery::issuer_is_origin` rule, which permits one optional trailing slash. Issuers carrying a path still match only themselves, and scheme, host, and port must remain identical, so no public API changes; the behavioral effect is limited to metadata that was previously rejected for a trailing-slash mismatch.
Features
Modified — Origin-issuer metadata matching tolerates one trailing slash: An authorization server named as a bare origin now accepts RFC 8414/OIDC metadata whose `issuer` differs only by one trailing slash, unblocking sign-in for servers that spell the two documents differently; path-bearing issuers and differing scheme, host, or port are still rejected. (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/http/mod.rsfn rfc8414_metadata_url(issuer: &str) -> Result<String> {, crates/tinymcp/src/transport/http/mod.rsuse crate::transport::resources::{)
Added — `origin_of` bare-origin parsing helper: Classifies an issuer string as a bare http(s) origin only when the parsed URL has path `/` and no query or fragment, delimiting exactly when the relaxed comparison applies. (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/http/mod.rsfn rfc8414_metadata_url(issuer: &str) -> Result<String> {)
Tests
unit — A trailing-slash matrix over `metadata_matches_issuer`: matches in both directions and with an explicit port, and rejects `//`, `/tenant` vs `/tenant/`, differing host, scheme, or port, and a query-bearing issuer.: Directly pins both the accepted and rejected cases of the relaxed rule. (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/http/mod_tests.rsfn metadata_issuer_matching_preserves_trailing_slash_identity() {)
integration — `fetch_authorization_server_metadata("{origin}/")` succeeds against a local server whose RFC 8414 document publishes the issuer without the trailing slash, and returns that metadata.: Covers the metadata fetch path that previously failed. (crates/tinymcp/src/transport/http/mod_tests.rsasync fn complete_rfc8414_metadata_is_returned_without_oidc_discovery() {)
integration — A loopback server shaped like the reported case — 401 Bearer with `resource_metadata`, `authorization_servers` with a trailing slash, RFC 8414 issuer without one, OIDC 404 — lets `OAuthFlow::begin` register a client and return an `{origin}/authorize?` URL with S256.: Exercises the sign-in discovery path at the flow level, but the tests lane notes it does not reach the new match path because the served RFC 8414 document advertises the issuer without a trailing slash. Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The change relaxes issuer matching so a bare origin issuer tolerates one trailing slash, and one behavioural test (`fetch_authorization_server_metadata`) would fail without it. However, the end-to-end test that is the actual motivation — the trailing-slash server naming itself through protected-resource metadata — passes only because the RFC 8414 document advertises no trailing slash, so the new match path of `metadata_matches_issuer` is not what it exercises, and the case where the slashed document fails validation and falls back to the deliberately-404 OIDC document is no longer covered by any test. No code defect found in the matching logic itself. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `00bb929a2604`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: Description lane answered that the description matches the diff, naming the trailing-slash matching, the reuse of `issuer_is_origin`, unchanged path/query/scheme/host/port behavior, and the three new tests present in the diff.
Lane summary: This is a description review. The PR body accurately describes the diff: `metadata_matches_issuer` still tries exact match first, then the new `origin_of` + `issuer_is_origin` origin-with-one-trailing-slash rule, exactly as the summary and behavior sections claim. The listed tests (unit `an_origin_issuer_matches_metadata_with_or_without_one_trailing_slash`, transport `an_origin_issuer_with_a_trailing_slash_accepts_metadata_without_one`, flow `an_authorization_server_named_with_a_trailing_slash_signs_in_through_its_origin_issuer`) all appear in the diff, and the diff does nothing significant the description omits. No description defect found. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `00bb929a2604`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Walkthrough
Issuer matching now accepts a single trailing-slash difference for bare HTTP(S) origins. Tests cover metadata fetching and OAuth sign-in when protected-resource metadata advertises an origin with a trailing slash.

OAuth sign-in with slash-bearing origin crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/mod_tests.rs
A loopback fixture advertises a slash-bearing origin in protected-resource metadata while authorization-server metadata uses the bare origin. The sign-in test checks registration, the authorization URL, and S256 PKCE.
OAuth sign-in can still fail when a provider splits required endpoints across metadata documents whose origin issuers differ only by a trailing slash. Align the merge check before merging.

Explanation
The title "fix(oauth): match an origin issuer with or without a trailing slash" matches the main change. The PR updates OAuth metadata issuer matching so a bare HTTP(S) origin issuer matches with or without one trailing slash. The raw summary shows changes in transport/http/mod.rs, its tests, and an OAuth sign-in test that cover this behavior. Path-based issuers keep exact matching, which the title does not mention, but the title still states the primary change.

Merge metadata for equivalent origin issuers.
If the RFC 8414 document omits an endpoint and the OpenID document supplies it, opposite trailing-slash forms pass the new issuer matcher but fail this equality check. fill_missing_metadata then discards the endpoint. OAuth sign-in can still fail because no complete authorization-server metadata reaches begin. Apply the same origin-only equivalence rule at this merge gate, while retaining exact matching for path-based issuers. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
