feat: bring /v1/decision onto perf - #18
Conversation
Score every allowed value of a finite schema in branch sequences forked from one cached context, instead of generating the JSON token by token. Accepts a list of contexts sharing one schema and prefix. Reserve the branch sequences with --decision-seqs N. Also adds the llama-parallel-decision tool. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5 (cherry picked from commit b9244f8)
Document the endpoint, --decision-seqs, the schema types and the options. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5 (cherry picked from commit 14d04e7)
Recurrent layers only batch sequences that hold the same number of tokens (split_equal), so on hybrid models the uneven decision branches were split into several ubatches. Right-pad each group of branches to its longest one (longest first) on recurrent/hybrid models; every layer is causal, so the logits read at each branch's last real token are unchanged. Qwen3.5 on an RTX 3060: the 12-field ticket preset now scores in 1 ubatch instead of 3 (9B: 161 -> 90 ms); scoring is 1.5-2.2x faster across the playground presets (4B), with no changed winners against one-branch-at-a-time scoring. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> (cherry picked from commit ad129b0)
…#15) Decision sequences live on the main context only; propagating n_seq_max = n_parallel + n_seq_decision to the MTP draft context violates the n_outputs_max assert (n_outputs_max <= cparams.n_outputs_max). Verified: MTP + /v1/decision coexist after this fix (no assert crash). (cherry picked from commit 8f02796)

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Clear the engine's sequences when decide_batch throws.
decide_batch removes the trunk sequences (seq_pool + i) only at the end of a successful group. Several paths throw in the middle of a group:
score_branchesthrows "a decision suffix exceeds the batch size".llama_decodefails withrc != 0.finish_treethrows "candidate token missing from its trie node".
After such an exception, the trunk sequences keep their context cells. If the throw happens after llama_memory_seq_cp, the current branch sequences also keep references. In llama-server, the context uses a unified KV cache that the slots share. The leaked cells therefore reduce the KV space for normal completions until the next /decision request runs seq_rm on these sequences. Clean up the engine's own range of sequences before the exception leaves decide_batch.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not silently ignore median/mean for greedy fields.
assemble applies the aggregate only when fr.probs.size() == sp.values.size(). Only tree-scored fields fill probs. A field is scored greedily in these cases:
- In
automode, the field has more thantree_maxvalues. The defaulttree_maxis 128, and integer and number fields can have up to 255 values. modeisgreedy.
For example, an integer field from 0 to 200 with "aggregate": "median" returns the greedy mode. The response has no interval_p10_p90 and no error. The caller receives a value that does not match the aggregate it requested. Reject this combination with an explicit error.

In assemble, reject any non-mode aggregate when the field was not tree-scored,
identified by fr.probs.size() differing from sp.values.size(). Add this
validation before the numeric aggregate handling so greedy fields cannot
silently return a mode for median or mean; preserve the existing tree-scored
aggregate behavior and provide an explicit error naming the field and aggregate.

Check argc before reading worker arguments, and handle numeric parse errors.
The guard on Line 101 accepts argc == 5. In worker mode, Line 117 then reads argv[5]. When argc == 5, argv[5] is the terminating null pointer. Building a std::string from it in std::stoi is undefined behavior and usually crashes. Worker mode needs argc >= 6.
The std::stoi calls on Lines 112, 116, 117 and 120 also run outside the try block that starts on Line 133. A non-numeric N_CPU_MOE, N_CTX, N_BATCH or DECIDE_NSEQ value throws std::invalid_argument. That exception is not caught, so the process calls std::terminate and does not print ERROR. The supervisor protocol then gets no parseable output.

Validate worker-mode argument count before accessing argv[4] and argv[5], using
a safely initialized worker flag so argc == 5 is rejected. Wrap numeric parsing
in the parameter initialization flow around llm_add_n_cpu_ffn_overrides, n_ctx,
n_batch, n_parallel, and thread parsing with the existing exception-handling
path, printing the required ERROR output and returning 1 for invalid values.

Correct the CLI protocol description.
The README says the worker reads "one JSON request per line". The worker in parallel-decision.cpp (Lines 141-150) reads something else. Each line is tab-separated: @shared|@fresh STATIC CONTEXT FIELD..., where each item is a file path. Each field file holds a count, the allowed values and a suffix. Reset decision_engine when the context is destroyed.
decision_engine stores the raw ctx_tgt pointer. That pointer is captured on the first /decision request (Lines 2384-2387). When the server enters the sleeping state, destroy() (Lines 943-957) calls llama_init.reset() and frees that llama_context. destroy() does not reset decision_engine. On resume, load_model() creates a new context. The if (!decision_engine) check on Line 2384 is false, so the next decision request runs decide_batch on the freed context. The result is a use-after-free crash or memory corruption. Any server started with --sleep-idle-seconds and --decision-seqs can hit this after one idle period.
There is a second problem at shutdown. decision_engine is declared before llama_init, so C++ destroys it after llama_init. If the engine destructor touches the context, that is also a use after free.

Reset decision_engine at the start of destroy(), before llama_init.reset() and
other context cleanup, so it cannot retain the freed ctx_tgt or outlive the
