Some concerns.
It may be worthwhile to finish up the TS pup port before merging this? It should be 99% done. I believe all that's really left is CRs and creating GitHub Actions for it?
I just haven't been able to devote any time to it. If you'd like to move that forward, I'd be 100% ok with that :)
Note: There's some weird branch dependencies with TS pup as the idea was to ensure each PR only depended on what it needed to function, so you'll want to be careful when merging.
| The action checks the first before running anything, because pup does not: a missing `.puprc`, one that | ||
| is not JSON, and one with no `paths.versions` all make pup change nothing and exit 0, and the branch | ||
| would be pushed with the old version. Each of them fails the job here with the branch untouched. | ||
|
|
||
| Two gaps are warnings rather than failures, since the job can still do something useful: | ||
|
|
||
| - No `checks.tbd.dirs`: pup falls back to its default and replaces TBDs under `src/` only. | ||
| - No `changelogger` section: the changelogger falls back to its defaults and writes a keepachangelog | ||
| `changelog.md` with semver versioning. | ||
|
|
||
| A writing strategy given as a `.js` file is loaded from the checkout, so it has to be there before the | ||
| action runs. One written in TypeScript has to be built in an earlier step. |

This reads like AI slop. The evaluative filler of Two gaps are warnings rather than failures is so exhausting to read, and if our docs are exhausting to read, then humans will never read it.
I would suggest either rewriting the docs manually for a human, or tighten the reins on Claude so that it writes the documentation without phrases like this.
I personally have the following in my global CLAUDE.md which seems to help a fair amount:
No flowery prose. Never use metaphor, idiom, or literary framing in documentation, code comments,
commit messages, or PR text — say the plain thing with the literal verb and the concrete noun.
Headings state what happens rather than a figure of speech. Rejected examples: "two doors to the
same room" for two controls that do the same thing, "Downgrading is a one-way door" as a heading,
"hands it back", "on its way out". Write "The Reset pill does the same thing as the Reset button in
the Settings panel" and "Rolling the plugin back breaks blocks that use tokens" instead.
No evaluative filler. This is separate from the rule above and catches sentences with no metaphor in
them at all. Do not tell me how to regard a fact: whether it is narrow, material, worth knowing,
notable, surprising, the real question, or the thing that needs a decision. State the fact and let it
stand. Delete any clause whose only job is to announce the value of what follows, and do not address
the reader in an aside. This applies to your replies to me as well as to documents. Rejected, with
the replacement that was correct:
- "The cost is narrow and worth knowing in advance: a PR re-downloads it" → "Enabling it has one
cost: a PR re-downloads it"
- "They are not branch-scoped, which is the constraint that needs a decision rather than just
noting." → "They are also not branch-scoped."
- "Do not ask for this one." → "It is not recommended."
- "nothing in the mechanism bounds the blast radius" → "the mechanism places no limit on how many
later runs are affected"
- "The argument against it is the poor ratio of payoff to work." → "The reason to skip it is the
small saving relative to the work."
- "It has the larger payoff by far." → "Its saving is the larger of the two."
Prefer the plainest verb and the plainest noun available. "The image reference is what invalidates
the cache", not "the image reference does the invalidating". "slic's compose override file", not
"slic's compose override seam". "write our own", not "hand-roll".| - **A pre-release is refused.** `4.17.0-beta.1` is rejected by the `stellarwp` versioning, so the action

If a custom Version Strategy is defined, this may not necessarily be true. This is only the case by default. It could be worth clarifying that fact :)
| The release branch to push the preparation to, e.g. `release/M26.jigglypuff`. A branch name, not a | ||

There was a problem hiding this comment.
If it cannot be a ref, then should the arg be renamed? Naming it ref when it cannot accept any ref is confusing.

If we make the adjustment to the main docs to account for a custom Version Strategy, this should probably have a less specific description.

Possible warning: pup has a bunch of PRs open to rewrite it in TS. How will we handle PHP vs TS Pup in this action if we accept a version input like this? Will we stop supporting PHP pup in this action once the TS build is released? Will we have a branching path here to support both variants?
TS pup should have GitHub Actions support similar to how Changelogger does, so maybe the branch happens by choosing to either run those GitHub Actions from pup or to fall back to downloading the .phar?

Why doesn't this just use https://github.com/octokit/octokit.js similar to how The move-git-tags Composite Action does? It can create commits for us without us having to hand write everything and we have ways to write unit tests for it by mocking its internals already available.
Example via Claude:
const { data: ref } = await octokit.rest.git.getRef({ owner, repo, ref: `heads/${branch}` });
const parentSha = ref.object.sha;
const { data: parent } = await octokit.rest.git.getCommit({ owner, repo, commit_sha: parentSha });
const { data: tree } = await octokit.rest.git.createTree({
owner,
repo,
base_tree: parent.tree.sha,
tree: [
{ path: 'dist/index.js', mode: '100644', type: 'blob', content: fileContents },
// Use `sha: null` to delete a path.
],
});
const { data: commit } = await octokit.rest.git.createCommit({
owner,
repo,
message: 'Build dist',
tree: tree.sha,
parents: [ parentSha ],
});
await octokit.rest.git.updateRef({ owner, repo, ref: `heads/${branch}`, sha: commit.sha });| /**

Similar to the TS pup concerns, we would need to be sure this could be compatible with what it produces. I tried to ensure that TS pup produced near-identical output to PHP pup, but it is possible that it outputs some commands slightly differently.
The input only ever accepts a branch name, never a full ref, so the name said something the value could not be. The workflow-level input of the template stays `ref`: that is the dispatch interface a release tool sends, unchanged.
…oded default pup-version now takes a release number or 'latest' (the default). A pinned release still downloads straight from its release page, with no API call; 'latest' reads the newest release through the GitHub API, authenticated with the action token so the runner's shared unauthenticated quota is not spent.
…floating-tags actions Both actions carried the same part-by-part version ordering. It now lives in .github/lib/versions.js, which ships in the same repository checkout the runner fetches for the action: one implementation, no package to publish, nothing for a caller to install.
A release's pup.phar asset decides how the preparation runs, not a version comparison: the phar is there and the action runs it as it always has; it answers 404 and the release is the TypeScript line, which runs through its own GitHub Action. The manifest carries those calls already — conditioned on the distribution the prepare step reports, so they stay inert until a phar-less release exists — spelling out the interface the pup action is expected to ship, the changelogger pattern this action already uses. uses: only takes a static ref, so the floating major tag @V3 is the moving pin. The branch-version check stays on the phar path for now; the TS contract does not define it. The asset check is a HEAD request, not the releases API, so a pinned pup-version stays free of API calls.

Validate tag_name from the latest-release response.
The code uses tag_name without validation. The value then goes into a download URL and a temp file path. If the response has no tag, release becomes undefined. The HEAD request then returns 404 for .../download/undefined/pup.phar. The action takes that 404 to mean the TS distribution and continues without an error. Check tag_name against PUP_VERSION_PATTERN, or at least require it to be a non-empty string.

The review called out the docs reading like model output: evaluative framing, asides that explain how to regard a fact, phrases that cushion what is plain. This rewrites the file for a human reader: each sentence states one fact with a literal verb, the refused-version list carries only the rule and its cause, and the operational sections (pushing, dates, reruns) drop the commentary.
