Tests for the wporg-svn actions run the real scripts against throwaway file:// repositories and a local HTTPS server. A guard sits first on PATH and refuses any svn, svnmucc or svnrdump write whose target isn't file://, so no test or QA run can change a production repository by mistake.
The helpers pin every read to one repository revision, never take a failed read to mean a path is absent, and pass the SVN password on stdin only. They check a release ZIP fully before extracting anything, read the Stable Tag and plugin version the way WordPress.org and WordPress do, and make a working copy match an artifact exactly. A tag's properties are read with one streamed svnrdump dump instead of svn proplist -R, which asks for every path separately: 4 seconds instead of 685 on The Events Calendar's 6.18.0 tag.
tag prepares a release without moving the stable pointer. It copies the stable tag to tags/<version> on the server, checks out only that new tag, makes it match the ZIP byte for byte and commits the difference. Between those two commits the new tag is public but incomplete. A failure there is reported loudly, and the tag is never cleaned up or reused automatically.
set-stable copies the new tag's readme.txt into trunk in one server-side commit, which moves the Stable Tag. It needs no checkout, fails rather than overwrite a competing change to trunk/readme.txt, and treats identical bytes as a verified no-op.
update-trunk replaces trunk with a copy of the released tag in one atomic commit, pinned to the revision it checked. Any change inside trunk since then makes the whole commit fail, and a trunk that already matches is a verified no-op.
Real repository hooks inject competing commits and rejected writes, including between tag's two commits. PATH wrappers simulate only what a file:// repository can't produce: lost responses and authentication, TLS and connection failures. The tests also check that a cancelled run reports what it left behind, that a failed read is never taken for an absent path, and that the password and signed ZIP URL never leak.
The README covers run order, inputs and outputs, what each action checks, the ZIP limits, known limitations and how to recover from a failure between commits. A test keeps the README's example identical to examples/release.yml and each action.yml in step with its script.
The workflow lints the scripts and workflows, runs the suite on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, and runs all three actions through uses: against a local fixture repository, with the write guard on PATH.
With WPORG_LIVE=1, the read helpers and parsers run against real WordPress.org plugins and release ZIPs, and real releases are mirrored into local repositories to confirm the actions produce byte-identical tags. Every write goes to a local file:// repository.

tag now copies the stable tag into a local working copy, makes it match the ZIP and commits once, so tags/<version> appears complete or not at all. Before, a server-side copy published the tag holding the previous release until a second commit filled it, and a failure in between left an incomplete public tag that needed manual cleanup. The commit still records a copy, so only changed files are uploaded; the property check now runs on the local copy instead of an svnrdump stream; and an artifact identical to the stable tag fails before any write. tag no longer needs svnmucc or svnrdump, and the copy-revision output is gone. Timed read-only against the-events-calendar, the downloads take about as long as before.
update-trunk also replaces trunk/readme.txt, so running it first would move the stable pointer and release the version by itself. It now refuses unless trunk's Stable Tag already names the version, which set-stable does. A rollback still works: point set-stable at the older tag, then update trunk.
set-stable and update-trunk take an optional expected-revision: when it's set, they refuse unless tags/<version> last changed at exactly that revision, so a tag edited after approval can't be released by mistake. The example workflow and the CI end-to-end job pass the tag job's revision output. Leaving it empty keeps the old behaviour for manual runs and rollbacks.
When a set-stable or update-trunk write fails and the target doesn't hold the release, the error claimed the run had not changed anything. A run can't prove that: its write may have landed and then been overwritten. The message now states what was observed at which revision and points to svn log.
The runner unescapes %25, %0D and %0A in ::add-mask:: values before masking them, so a password or URL containing "%25" masked the wrong string. The mask steps now escape them first. The docs no longer promise the ZIP URL is never printed: GitHub logs a step's inputs before the action can mask anything, so a private URL has to come from a secret or be masked in an earlier step.
The security advice said a protected environment gated the release secrets, but the example's tag job uses them without one, which environment secrets wouldn't allow. The README now says plainly that they are repository secrets, that the environment only gates the release job's approval, and who can read them.
Info-ZIP's zip, the one on macOS and Linux, stores UTF-8 names without the ZIP's UTF-8 flag. zipfile reads those as CP437, so a release built with it committed garbled names, such as µùѵ£¼Φ¬₧/ for 日本語/, and on Python 3.12+ an archive carrying Info-ZIP's Unicode Path field was refused outright. Unflagged names are now read as UTF-8, and a name that isn't valid UTF-8 is refused instead of guessed. Unicode Path fields are checked directly rather than through zipfile, which ignores them before Python 3.12: every valid field must agree with the name, so no Python version publishes a file under a different name than unzip would extract.
Entry names are now capped at 64 levels and 1,024 bytes, and the 50,000 limit counts every file and directory the ZIP would create, including parent directories it doesn't list. Before, a small ZIP of deep paths passed every limit yet made inspection build millions of directory prefixes: 1,002 entries implied 63,000 directories and 114 MiB, and the entry limit allowed over 3 million. That case is now refused in 0.2 s. Real plugins are far below the caps: the-events-calendar is about 4,900 paths, at most 12 levels deep.
curl before 8.4, including Ubuntu 22.04's 7.81, ignores --max-filesize when the server sends no length, so a chunked response could fill the runner's disk before the ZIP size check ran. curl now also runs under a file size limit, and both ways of stopping report that the ZIP is larger than 256 MiB. Checked in containers: curl 7.81 stops a chunked 1 MiB response at 33,792 bytes against a 32 KiB limit, and curl 8.5 stops at its own limit.
The private SVN config now asks for one streamed response per checkout or export instead of a request per file. Timed read-only on the-events-calendar's 6.18.0 tag (3,876 files, 56 MB), an export dropped from about 15 s to 3 s and a checkout from 16 s to 6 s, with byte-identical results.
Reconciling the working copy ran svn add and svn rm once per top-level path, and checked each path against every earlier one, which takes minutes on a large release. Each now runs once with a targets file, and paths inside an already-handled directory are skipped by looking up their parents. Locally, reconciling a large change went from 5.1 s to 0.5 s.

Entry types were only checked for ZIPs made on Unix (host 3), so a symlink or other special file in a ZIP that says it was made on OS X (host 19) was published as a regular file holding the link target. Host 19 stores Unix modes the same way, and Go's archive/zip reads them as such, so those entries are now refused like any other symlink. macOS's zip and ditto both write host 3, so regular files are unaffected.
The tests failed on both GitHub runners because Ubuntu's zip sets the UTF-8 flag on non-ASCII names whenever en_US.UTF-8 is installed, which it is there, whatever LC_ALL says. The extractor already handles both flagged and unflagged names. The Info-ZIP test now accepts either, and a new test clears the flag itself so unflagged UTF-8 names stay covered on every machine. The docs no longer claim Linux's zip always leaves the flag unset.
The existing test only added a new file to the tag after approval. This one changes the content of an existing file, then a property on it, and checks that set-stable refuses each time, since the tag's last-changed revision covers everything under it.
The wporg-svn lint job runs a bare actionlint, which also checks release-tags.yml. That workflow sets concurrency.queue: max, which GitHub documents and which keeps tag-moving runs waiting instead of cancelled, but actionlint 1.7.12, its newest release, rejects the key (rhysd/actionlint#657). So the job failed on every run. Ignore that one message in that one file, rather than linting only the wporg-svn files: every workflow is still checked, an unknown key next to queue is still an error, and the local command in the README works as written.
