Description

WheelEventManager synthesizes a moving pointer out of a stationary cursor by accumulating wheel deltas, but only the page coordinates use the accumulator:

this.wheelDelta.x += event.deltaX;      // wheelCallback

x: event.clientX + this.wheelDelta.x,   // accumulated
offsetX: event.offsetX - event.deltaX,  // one event, opposite sign

Repro: a Pan with enableTrackpadTwoFingerGesture on web, three trackpad frames of deltaY: 10 from clientY: 0, offsetY: 0. absoluteY reads 10, 20, 30 while y reads -10, -10, -10. y points the wrong way and never advances for the whole gesture. translationY, velocityY and absoluteY are fine, they come off the page coordinates.

x/y and absoluteX/absoluteY are the same point in two spaces, so they can only differ by the view's page offset. Every other producer keeps that invariant: PointerEventManager.ts:230 derives offsetX from the same clientX it writes to x, KeyboardEventManager.ts:120-129 writes the view centre into both, ScrollEventManager.ts:26-29 writes one value twice, and GestureHandlerButton.web.tsx:51-53 computes x from absoluteX. WheelEventManager.ts:35-36 is the only place where the two move apart.

The fix, as suggested in review, derives the view relative position from the accumulated page position the same way PointerEventManager does: (x - rect.left) / scaleX, with getEffectiveBoundingRect and calculateViewScale on the handler's view. This also stops relying on event.offsetX, which is relative to event.target rather than to the handler's view, and is in the target's untransformed space. With the v3 detector the view is the display: contents wrapper, so the target is always one of its descendants. The cost is one getBoundingClientRect per wheel event, the same read PointerEventManager does per pointer move.

onWheel is overridden only by PanGestureHandler, and the wheel offsetX/offsetY reaches exactly one consumer, PointerTracker.relativeCoords -> GestureHandler.transformNativeEvent().

Test plan

yarn workspace react-native-gesture-handler test - 182 passed, was 178. Merged onto current main it is 189, was 185.

The PanGestureHandler trackpad coordinates cases drive the real WheelEventManager off a fake view with a mocked getBoundingClientRect and computed style, and assert x/y against absoluteX/absoluteY for:

  • a view at the page origin,
  • a view at (40, 60),
  • a wheel over a child of that view, where offsetX/offsetY are relative to the child,
  • a view scaled 2x by its transform.

On main all four fail, the first one reports x: -5, y: -10 against absoluteX: 15, absoluteY: 30. The previous revision of this PR (event.offsetX plus the accumulated delta) passed the first two but reported x: 25, y: 40 instead of 55, 70 for the child and x: 20, y: 40 instead of 12.5, 25 for the scaled view.

ts-check, lint-js and circular-dependency-check are clean.

`WheelEventManager` synthesizes a moving pointer from a stationary cursor
by accumulating wheel deltas, but only the page coordinates used the
accumulator. The view relative ones subtracted a single event's delta, so
they moved opposite to the page ones and never advanced across a gesture.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved trackpad gesture coordinate handling on web, including for views positioned away from the page origin and views with scaling.
    • Corrected horizontal and vertical offsets when wheel movement and pointer movement occur together.
    • Kept view-relative coordinates consistent when wheel events occur over a child view.

Walkthrough

Wheel event mapping now calculates offsets from wheel-adjusted pointer coordinates, effective view bounds, and view scale. Pan gesture tests cover origin, offset, child, and scaled views.

Changes

Wheel coordinate mapping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transformed wheel coordinate mapping
packages/react-native-gesture-handler/src/web/tools/WheelEventManager.ts
mapEvent calculates offsets from client coordinates adjusted by accumulated wheel deltas, relative to the effective bounding rectangle and divided by the view scale.
Trackpad coordinate regression coverage
packages/react-native-gesture-handler/src/web/handlers/__tests__/PanGestureHandler.test.ts
Tests expose the transformed native event and configure fake view styles, transforms, bounds, and wheel events. Trackpad cases check coordinates at the origin, on offset and child views, and on a scaled view.

Hi @giaBaoJS! Thank you for submitting this PR!

I've also checked one other example and I think we can do even better:

  protected mapEvent(event: WheelEvent): AdaptedEvent {
    const rect = getEffectiveBoundingRect(this.view);
    const { scaleX, scaleY } = calculateViewScale(this.view);

    const x = event.clientX + this.wheelDelta.x;
    const y = event.clientY + this.wheelDelta.y;

    return {
      x,
      y,
      offsetX: (x - rect.left) / scaleX,
      offsetY: (y - rect.top) / scaleY,
      ...

could you check if that works in your case? If so, I'd prefer to apply it instead 😅

Let me know!

Thanks, that's a nicer fix! It works, so I switched to it. It also covers two cases my version still got wrong: a wheel over a child element (event.offsetX is relative to the target, not the view) and a scaled view. I added tests for both, plus one for a view that isn't at the page origin, and updated the description.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the opposite rectangle edge for a negative scale.

If a view uses scaleX(-1), its local x-origin is at rect.right. The current calculation subtracts rect.left, so a wheel event over the view produces an incorrect offsetX. Use rect.right when scaleX is negative. Apply the same rule to rect.bottom and negative scaleY.

This should be updated also in other files and probably should be treated as a follow-up

@m-bert Thanks for the guidance. Negative-scale coordinate handling should be consistent across the affected web event managers, rather than changed only in WheelEventManager.ts. A follow-up is appropriate.

Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for the cross-file update and regression tests?

Learning: In react-native-gesture-handler's TypeScript web implementation, negative-scale coordinate handling affects more than packages/react-native-gesture-handler/src/web/tools/WheelEventManager.ts. Maintainer m-bert recommends addressing it consistently across affected files in a follow-up rather than fixing only WheelEventManager.mapEvent.

## Description

Follow-up to #4531.

On web the relative `x`/`y` of an event were computed as `(clientX -
rect.left) / scaleX`, which only holds for a positive, axis-aligned
scale on the view itself. A mirrored view (`scaleX: -1`) reported
negative coordinates, a rotated one divided by zero, and transforms on
ancestors (a zoomed container) were ignored entirely. Native reports
coordinates in the view's own space through the whole hierarchy, so web
disagreed with it in all of those cases.

This replaces `calculateViewScale` with `viewportToLocal`, which inverts
the linear part of the view's transform composed with its ancestors'
around the center of the bounding rect. The center of the rect is where
the view's own center lands under any affine transform, so no
transform-origin or layout position is needed. The untransformed size
comes from `offsetWidth`/`offsetHeight`, or is solved back from the
bounds for SVG elements which have neither.

All four places that mapped coordinates now share it:
`PointerEventManager`, `WheelEventManager`, the hover payload of
`GestureHandlerButton.web` and
`GestureHandlerWebDelegate.absoluteToLocal` (which had its own
`DOMMatrix` version for the pinch focal point and rotation anchor). The
helper also steps into the `display: contents` wrapper the v3 detectors
attach to, so v3 gets the transform of the child the same way the
delegate already did.

Reported coordinates change for views with a transformed ancestor, which
previously received visual pixels. Perspective is not handled.

## Test plan

- `yarn test src/web` in the package, new `utils.test.ts` covers scale,
mirror, 90/180 degree rotation, the `scale` property, `matrix3d`, SVG,
nested and rotated ancestors and the contents wrapper.
- Test screen with a box per code path (pointer pan, trackpad pan, hover
gesture, Touchable hover, pinch focal, rotation anchor, v2 pan, SVG
pan), each transformed or inside a transformed parent, with a dot placed
at the reported `x`/`y`. The dot sits under the pointer in every box on
web, as it does on native.
