Closes #439. Part of Phase 2 (#425).

Summary

BookService reads a source project's whole text in the host and keeps a form-in-text index. Nothing in the WebView calls it yet.

getTextReadStatus(project) # the first call starts the read; resolves once listed
listBooks + the USJ_Book provider # booksPresent + language tag; failure rejects the call
  readText
readTextBook, 4 books at a time
watchBookText # one USJ subscription per book, kept
      formsOfBook -> FormIndex
isFormInText(project, form) # undefined until every book is read, or while any failed

edit to a book the read has read
let go of the cached copies # the open book is held again at once
readTextBook # the book's forms are refiled
  onBookTextChanged                   # -> onAnalysisChanged

The cache now keeps the open book beside the latest one. This is the patch from the #439 discussion, with two additions: outlineCounts, so an earlier outline request that finishes last doesn't take back the open book, and holdBook handing an edit to the open book to the read, which reads the book again and reports the edit once.

  • onOpenBookTextChanged is now onBookTextChanged. It reports edits to the open book and to every book the read has read, once per edit.
  • New command: interlinearizer.getTextReadStatus, returning { booksRead, bookCount, failedBookIds } as JSON once the books are listed. It rejects when the books or their provider can't be got.
  • New perf:app scenario: the host's read time and heap, for the 2e checkpoint.
  • The committed perf results now end with the issue each was measured for: the Data layer: capture a performance baseline before the database migration #407 baseline and this checkpoint.
  • perf:bench compares the index with the WebView's read. It also fixes the bench's concordance step, broken since Give token and segment links ids and pick ties by rule (#430) #461.

Decisions needing review

Each has a cheap alternative.

  1. What starts the read. The first getTextReadStatus call, until openSession starts it from 4a.
    • Alternative: start it from getBookOutline. Every view open would then pay for the whole read before the checkpoint says it's affordable.
  2. How edits are seen. One USJ subscription per book, kept for the session.
    • Cost: the platform keeps each subscription's last USJ, so the host holds the whole canon's USJ.
    • Cost: every book save notifies every subscription, so one edit re-fetches and compares about 66 books.
    • Alternative: no subscriptions, and re-read a book only when it's next requested. That's cheap, but the index goes stale.
    • Alternative: one subscription as a signal, plus per-book hashes. That keeps no USJ but still re-fetches every book per edit.
  3. Separate watches from the cache. The open book has two subscriptions while the read holds it, and one edit can tokenize it twice.
    • Alternative: one watch registry shared by the cache and the read. That needs more code.
  4. Which edits are reported. Edits to every book the read has read, not just the open book. 3j needs these.
    • The WebView filters by book, so it's unaffected. Other listeners would see more events.
  5. When an edit is reported. After the book is re-read into the index, so a refetch sees it.
    • Until then the index answers from the book's old forms.
  6. Changes to the book list. A list that fails rejects the status request, and the next request lists the books again. Books added mid-session are not read.
    • The USJ_Book provider is got once, with the list, so a project without one fails to list rather than failing every book.
    • Main's read lists the books again on each refresh, and reads failed books again. The host reads a failed book again when its watch hears a change, which every Scripture save in the project causes.
    • Alternative: subscribe to booksPresent and list the books again on each change.
  7. Status shape. The plan's three counts, sent once the books are listed. A failed list is an error, not a state.
    • Alternative: add a state (listing, unlisted, reading, read) and answer at once.
  8. Public surface. The command is declared in papi-shared-types. The index is a per-form isFormInText, which normalizes the form it's given.

Deviations from the plan

  • A status request with no open view keeps a listed read until deactivate. A read whose books could not be listed is dropped before the request rejects.
    • Defense: closeProject runs only when a view closes, and the book cache behaves the same way today.
  • The issue comment wanted one subscription per book. The open book has two again while the read holds it.
    • Defense: the comment kept the read's own watches. This cost is small next to decision 2's.
  • The comment said to fold onOpenBookTextChanged into the read's watches. It is now one listener set, fed by both kinds of watch.
    • Defense: open-book reports can't depend on a read that nothing starts before 4a.
  • The book list is not watched. See decision 6.
    • Defense: this matches main. 5a can add it if marking needs it.
  • The read keeps no tokenized Book and has no per-book hook. 3j re-anchors "as 2e's read delivers each book".
  • The checkpoint isn't decided. The run is recorded (see the test plan), but this PR doesn't make the call.
    • Defense: it isn't part of 2e's "Done when". It must be decided before 3j and 4a.
  • The bench's concordance fix is out of scope.
    • Defense: the bench threw before reaching the new check. It's in its own commit.

Test plan

  • npm run lint

  • npm run test:coverage: all tests pass, at 100% coverage.

    • The read: listing, a few books at a time, failures, rejecting when the books or their provider can't be got, books with no text, closing mid-read.
    • The index: gating, case, edits.
    • Edit reports: once per edit, after the re-read, none for a book that fails to read again, and stale watches ignored.
  • PERF_RUNS=1 npm run perf:bench. The index matches the WebView's read on every Data layer: capture a performance baseline before the database migration #407 tier:

Tier Not in the text (WebView read) Not in the text (host index) Disagreeing
    small 52 52 0
    medium 510 510 0
    large 2601 2601 0
    large-loadable 1902 1902 0

This compares the shared pure functions over the same books in Node, not the host read end to end.

  • Checkpoint: PERF_APP_PATH=<packaged app> npm run perf:app, then npm run perf:summary. Run at 257ed462 on the reference machine (i7-12700KF, Windows 11, load 0.0): packaged app, production extension, 10 runs. Tiers small, medium and large-loadable; large is skipped as in the baseline, since the app can't load it. Recorded in perf/results/app-2026-10-20T164125-257ed462-439-checkpoint.json.

    • Read time: 1.33–1.45 s median across tiers, of which tokenizing is 0.59–0.61 s. The concordance's WebView read takes 3.7 s on small and medium, and 28.0 s on large-loadable, where it also re-anchors.
    • Host heap: +38 MB with the whole text read, on every tier. It includes the USJ the platform keeps per subscription.
    • Edit cost, measured by hand in the dev app on a Linux i5-8350U laptop: an edit reaches onAnalysisChanged in about 55 ms before the read, and in about 1.1 s while the read holds all 82 of WEB's books.
  • Manual, against WEB with RUT open, driving the renderer's papi over CDP:

    • interlinearizer.getTextReadStatus reported 82 of 82 books read and no failures in 3.8 s.
    • Three edits to JON: onAnalysisChanged named JON once each.
    • Three edits to RUT: onAnalysisChanged named RUT once each, and the view showed the edited text.

Merge danger

Door: two-way. Nothing is persisted.

Blast radius: small.

  • Every view: the cache keeps the open book beside the latest. Reading other books no longer evicts it.
  • Only once a read runs: more onAnalysisChanged events, and the host costs in decision 2.

A book edited during the initial host read can briefly return outdated form results. This is a localized, recoverable issue; merging is reasonable with owner awareness, though the watch guard should be corrected.

Explanation

Issue [#439] requires a source-project whole-text read, progress and failed-book reporting, a per-form index, matching #407 results, and index updates after Scripture edits. bookService.ts implements bounded whole-text reads, per-book watches, rereads, and edit reporting. form-index.ts normalizes forms and replaces each book's indexed forms. The public type declares interlinearizer.getTextReadStatus. The PR test and benchmark evidence reports failure gating, edit coverage, and zero disagreements with the WebView read on all listed #407 tiers. The performance checkpoint is recorded. Session-open integration is not required by this issue's current scope.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay connected to [#439]. Cache retention and onBookTextChanged support fresh reads and edit reporting. The command, public types, tests, performance scenario, benchmark comparison, and recorded results support the required API, correctness, and performance checkpoint. The concordance benchmark correction enables the new comparison to run and does not add unrelated product behavior.

Balance the order of whole-text measurements.

The test completes every concordance run before it starts a host read. Repeated reads of the same source can warm caches or change machine state for the host samples. Alternate the scenario order across runs, or isolate each scenario in a fresh app, before comparing their timings. Record the executed order with the samples.

Based on learnings, fixed-order benchmark comparisons should alternate or randomize execution order and record that order.

On the nitpick about alternating the concordance and host reads in app-perf.spec.ts: I have left the order as is. In the checkpoint run, no concordance read is more than 4% over its tier's median, so the first run pays no cold-cache cost, and the host read is at least 2.7× faster in every tier.

The open book, the one last outlined, is now kept alongside the latest
book instead of being watched apart from the cache. Reading other books
no longer evicts it, so it has one USJ subscription however it is
reached, page fetches after a whole-book read reuse its tokenized text,
and closing a project waits on one first delivery per book.

Patch from the issue #439 discussion.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
approvedAnalysisByToken gained an analyses-by-id parameter in #461, and
perf:bench, outside the typecheck, still called it without one, so the
run threw at concordance.build. It now builds the map as the
concordance panel does.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
BookService reads every book of a source project's text, a few at a
time, and files each book's word forms in a FormIndex. The read starts
with the first getTextReadStatus for the project and lasts until the
project closes:

- getTextReadStatus (also a command) reports the read's state, the
books read and in the text, and the books whose latest read failed.
- isFormInText answers whether the text holds a form, and answers
nothing until every book is read or while any book has failed, so
"not in the text" marking stays off.
- The read watches each book it has read; an edit lets go of the cached
copies, reads the book again, updates its forms, and is then
  reported. onOpenBookTextChanged becomes onBookTextChanged, reporting
edits to the open book and to every book the read keeps, once each.

A watch kept only to be stopped no longer holds its first delivery, so
the read keeps no USJ once each book is indexed.

perf:bench checks the index against the WebView's read: on every #407
tier both find the same catalog forms not in the text. perf:app gains a
whole-text read scenario timing the host's read and its heap, for the
2e checkpoint.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Each book subscription keeps its last delivery in the platform for as
long as it is open, so the read holds every book's USJ once it has read
them, whatever the watch keeps. The concurrency comment and the
watch's stop now say only what is true, and the perf summary notes that
the host heap with the whole text read includes that USJ.

isFormInText normalizes the form it is asked about, and the app perf
scenario fails a read in which any book failed, rather than timing it.

The checkpoint ran on the reference machine the #407 baseline used. Each committed result now ends with the issue it was measured for, so a run's origin is clear without opening it.

…isting fails

A rejected subscription only happens when the project's USJ_Book provider
can't be got, which fails every book at once. Getting the provider with the
book list turns that into a listing failure, so the per-book retry goes.
getTextReadStatus now resolves once the books are listed and rejects when
they can't be, which replaces the listing and unlisted states.
