The vulnerability was responsibly disclosed and fixed by Nadav Magier.

In vulnerable versions, the issue can be mitigated by lowering the value of the maxPayload option if possible.

I reviewed this as a dependency-upgrade supply-chain/security pass,
including the structural lockfile change, exact npm artifact integrity and
metadata, the published ws 8.18.1-to-8.21.0 tarball/source diff, and the
upstream fixes and advisory ranges for CVE-2026-45736 and CVE-2026-48779.

The change is limited to the dev-only transitive ws package. I found no
new install hooks, binaries, native code, runtime dependencies, unexpected
network or credential access, process execution, or provenance regression.
The two security fixes are narrowly implemented and cover the reported
memory-disclosure and remote memory-exhaustion paths.
