gh-161077: Replace "truthy"/"falsy" with "true"/"false" in the docs - #161436

Conversation
…docs Python's documented terminology is true/false, not truthy/falsy, as used by Truth Value Testing, Boolean Operations, and the if and while statements. This replaces the five remaining occurrences in Doc/. In tkinter, TRUE/YES/ON are the integer 1 rather than the True singleton, so those two lines are phrased to keep true/false lowercase and unstyled instead of starting the sentence with a capitalised "True". Supersedes the retracted PR pythongh-158663. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Yeah that's not quite right. My PR got stuck in disagreements, so I was hoping someone without that problem, like a core dev working on docs, would just do it (however they see fit). But also fine if someone else gets it done. (Preferably not a clanker just doing it so its human can brag about high contribution statistics.) |
Python's documented terminology is true/false, not truthy/falsy — see
Truth Value Testing,
Boolean Operations,
and the
ifand
whilestatements. This replaces the five remaining occurrences in
Doc/.This supersedes @pochmann's retracted PR gh-158663 — they asked in gh-161077 for
someone else to carry the fix.
Precedent for the identical change, both merged:
Note on the
tkinterwordingTRUE/YES/ONare the integer1, not theTruesingleton. Starting thesentence with "True values" capitalises the word and invites exactly the
misreading @bitdancer raised on gh-158663 — and here it would be actively
misleading, since the value is not
True. Those two lines are therefore phrased"Values that are true/false, ..." so that true/false stay lowercase and
unstyled, matching the rest of the docs (
Doc/already contains 26 instances of"a true value" and 22 of "a false value").
Scope
Doc/only. Deliberately left alone, as code rather than documentation:Lib/pathlib/__init__.pyandLib/logging/__init__.py_Py_uop_sym_new_truthiness(
Python/optimizer_symbols.c,Include/internal/pycore_optimizer.h)Verification
Every altered line is byte-identical outside the replaced words — backtick and
role-colon counts unchanged — so there is no RST syntax risk. Sphinx was not run
locally; the docs build in CI covers it.
Generative AI disclosure: prepared with assistance from Claude (Anthropic)

against the documentation linked above, and the two precedent PRs.
