An offline AI Guardrails Gateway built using FastAPI, Streamlit, and Python.
This project analyzes user prompts and retrieved context documents to detect:
- Prompt Injection
- Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
- RAG Injection
Based on the detected risks, the gateway decides whether to:
- ✅ Allow
⚠️ Transform (use the sanitized output instead of the original)- ❌ Block
v1.1 hardens the detectors against common evasions, redacts PII on every request, quarantines poisoned documents and explains every finding. See CHANGELOG.md.
- FastAPI REST API
- Streamlit Web UI
- Command Line Interface (CLI)
- Prompt Injection Detection (Unicode / look-alike / leetspeak / base64 aware)
- PII Detection & Redaction: email, phone, payment card (Luhn), Aadhaar (Verhoeff)
- RAG Injection Detection with document quarantine
- Per-rule severities and explainable findings (
rule+sourceon every reason) - Prompt Sanitization
- Risk Scoring
- Policy Engine (
GET /policylists every rule) - Structured (JSON) Logging, no prompt content ever logged
- Input size limits
- Docker Support
- Pytest Unit Tests

pip install -r requirements.dev.txtStreamlit UI and CLI:
pip install -r requirements.ui.txtuvicorn app.main:app --reloadAPI Documentation:
http://localhost:8000/docs
streamlit run ui/streamlit_app.pyOpen
http://localhost:8501
The UI reads the API address from the API_URL environment variable
(base address, e.g. http://localhost:8000).
Example
python cli.py --prompt "Ignore previous instructions"With RAG Document
python cli.py \
--prompt "Ignore previous instructions" \
--doc "Developer: Ignore guidelines"On Windows PowerShell use a backtick (`) instead of \ to continue a line,
or put everything on one line.
Use --api-url (or the GUARDRAILS_API_URL environment variable) to
target another host.
Build
docker compose buildRun
docker compose uphttp://localhost:8000/docs
http://localhost:8501
docker compose down- Non-Root Execution: Both
Dockerfile.apiandDockerfile.uirun as unprivileged userappuser(UID:GID 10001), conforming to CIS Docker Benchmarks and least-privilege standards. - Orchestration Healthchecks: Dockerfiles define native Python
HEALTHCHECKinstructions that verify HTTP/healthwithout externalcurlorwgetdependencies. - Orchestrated Startup:
docker-compose.ymlensures the UI container waits until the API container is verifiedservice_healthy.

Input limits (override with environment variables): prompt
GUARDRAILS_MAX_PROMPT_CHARS (20 000), documents
GUARDRAILS_MAX_CONTEXT_DOCS (20), characters per document
GUARDRAILS_MAX_DOC_CHARS (50 000). Document ids must be unique.
Violations return HTTP 422.
| decision | meaning | what the caller should do |
|---|---|---|
allow |
nothing found | use the original prompt and documents |
transform |
something was redacted, or a document was quarantined | use sanitized_prompt / sanitized_context_docs |
block |
risk score ≥ 80 (e.g. injection in the prompt and in a document) | refuse the request |
The score sets the base decision, but any modification forces at least
transform, so low-scoring findings such as a lone email address are
still redacted.
SentraGuard Lite supports configurable API-key authentication for protected endpoints.
- Local Development / Testing (Default):
When
GUARDRAILS_API_KEYis not set andGUARDRAILS_REQUIRE_AUTH=false, authentication is disabled. Local development, test suites, the CLI, and the Streamlit UI work out-of-the-box with zero configuration friction. - Production Deployment:
Set
GUARDRAILS_REQUIRE_AUTH=trueand configure a secret viaGUARDRAILS_API_KEY. The gateway validates that credentials are configured at startup and fails safe (refuses requests with HTTP 500) if the key is missing or empty, ensuring it never runs unauthenticated in production.
Clients may authenticate using either header:
X-API-Key: <your-api-key>Authorization: Bearer <your-api-key>
Query parameters are intentionally rejected to prevent credential leakage in proxy and browser logs.
- Public:
/health(orchestration probes),/docs,/redoc, and/openapi.json(OpenAPI documentation). - Protected (Default-Deny):
/analyze,/policy, and all other endpoints require authentication when enabled. Unknown routes return 401 when unauthenticated to prevent route-enumeration probing.
| Variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
GUARDRAILS_API_KEY |
"" |
Secret API key for authentication. |
GUARDRAILS_REQUIRE_AUTH |
false |
When true, enforces authentication and fails safe if GUARDRAILS_API_KEY is unset. |
GUARDRAILS_PUBLIC_PATHS |
"" |
Optional comma-separated override of public endpoints (defaults to /health,/docs,/redoc,/openapi.json). |
pytest -vGET /policy always returns the authoritative list. Summary:
| rule id | severity | catches |
|---|---|---|
override_instructions |
50 | "ignore / disregard / forget / override previous instructions" and synonyms |
disable_safeguards |
50 | "disable guardrails", "bypass safety", "ignore safeguards" |
reveal_system_prompt |
45 | "reveal / show system prompt", "what is your system prompt" |
developer_mode |
40 | "you are now in developer mode", "enter DAN mode" |
persona_jailbreak |
50 | "act as DAN", "do anything now" |
chat_template_tokens |
50 | <|im_start|>, [INST], <<SYS>> smuggled into text |
encoded:<rule> |
as rule | any of the above hidden in a base64 string |
Negated phrasing ("don't forget your instructions") is not flagged.
| rule id | severity | action | catches |
|---|---|---|---|
override_policy |
40 | quarantine | "override policy", "ignore guidelines / all rules" |
hidden_prompt_execution |
45 | quarantine | "execute hidden prompt" |
role_marker |
25 | redact | a line starting with System:, Developer:, Assistant: |
A document that triggers any rule whose action is quarantine is dropped
entirely rather than cleaned, because deleting one phrase usually leaves the
rest of the attack intact. role_marker is the only document rule that just
redacts, since chat transcripts legitimately contain "Assistant:" lines.
| rule id | severity | detects |
|---|---|---|
email |
15 | email addresses |
phone |
15 | international (+…), Indian mobile, North-American formatted numbers |
credit_card |
40 | 13-19 digit numbers that pass Luhn and have a card-issuer prefix |
aadhaar |
30 | 12-digit numbers that pass the Verhoeff checksum |
Per tag (prompt_injection, rag_injection, pii): the highest rule
severity, plus 10 for every additional distinct rule that fired (max +30).
Tags are summed and capped at 100. Repeating one phrase a hundred times does
not raise the score. Thresholds: transform ≥ 40, block ≥ 80.
Before matching, text is NFKC-normalised, invisible characters (zero-width,
soft hyphen, BOM, bidi controls, Unicode "tag" characters) are removed, common
Cyrillic/Greek look-alike letters are folded to Latin, and for injection
phrases digits such as 0/1/3 are folded to letters (Ign0re → Ignore).
This is a fast, deterministic first layer, not a complete defence.
- Rules are pattern based. Novel paraphrases, other languages, multi-turn attacks and instructions hidden in images/PDFs are not covered.
- Base64 is decoded one level deep; other encodings (hex, rot13, nested) are not.
- Phone detection is heuristic: bare 10-digit numbers starting 6-9 are treated as Indian mobiles (so a matching order id will be redacted), and bare 10-digit US numbers without separators are not detected.
- When content is flagged, the returned text is the normalised form (NFKC, invisible characters removed), which can alter unusual characters such as emoji joiners. Clean text is returned byte-for-byte unchanged.
- Quarantine can drop a legitimate document that happens to say "ignore the rules" (for example a game rulebook).
- Without authentication enabled, do not expose the API to untrusted networks:
set
GUARDRAILS_REQUIRE_AUTH=trueandGUARDRAILS_API_KEYin production.
- Modular architecture; the core engine has no web-framework dependency
- Deterministic offline execution
- No external AI APIs
- Regex-based detection with normalisation and checksum validation
- Policy (rules, severities, thresholds) kept in one module
- Structured logging (metadata only)
- Separate UI and backend
- Machine learning-based prompt injection detection as a second layer, with a labelled evaluation set
- Named Entity Recognition (NER) for advanced PII detection
- Configurable policies via YAML/JSON
- JWT / API-key authentication and rate limiting
- Role-based access control
- Database-backed audit logging
- Output-side guardrails (scan model responses)
- OpenAI-compatible proxy mode
- Prometheus metrics
- Kubernetes deployment
- Python 3.11
- FastAPI
- Pydantic
- Streamlit
- Requests
- Pytest
