Description

Adds spec.template.spec.progressDeadlineMinutes to ClusterObjectDeployment, mirroring the existing field on ClusterObjectSet and ClusterExtension (minimum 10, maximum 720 minutes). The value is passed through to each ClusterObjectSet revision the deployment creates, so a revision that does not roll out within the deadline is reported failed (Ready=False, reason ProgressDeadlineExceeded) and the deployment becomes Available=False (reason Unavailable).

This field was previously guarded by TestClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateSchema as a not-yet-implemented / controller-assigned field; that guard is updated to reflect that it is now a user-settable template field, with a positive retention test added. The top-level spec.progressDeadlineMinutes remains a deferred (pruned) field.

Changes

  • API: new optional progressDeadlineMinutes field on ClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateSpec (Minimum:=10, Maximum:=720).
  • Controller: buildClusterObjectSet passes the value through to the created ClusterObjectSet revisions.
  • e2e: new cod_progression_timeout.feature that lowers the deadline minimum to 1 minute on both the COD and COS CRDs (as the ClusterExtension progression test does) so the timeout path is exercised quickly. The min value for … e2e step now accepts ClusterObjectDeployment.
  • Tests: COD min/max bound cases in validation_test.go, controller passthrough assertion, updated schema guard + retention test.
  • Regenerated CRDs, manifests, applyconfigurations, and API reference docs.

Testing

  • make lint, make test-unit, and make verify pass.
  • The new cod_progression_timeout e2e scenario passes against a local experimental cluster (~67s).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional installation progress deadline to deployment templates. Configure it from 10 to 720 minutes; leaving it unset disables the deadline.
    • The configured deadline applies to each revision. If the latest revision misses its deadline, the deployment reports that it failed to progress; an earlier ready revision can remain available.

📝 Walkthrough

ClusterObjectDeployment templates now accept an optional progress deadline of 10–720 minutes. The controller copies the value to each generated ClusterObjectSet revision and reports Progressing=False when the latest revision reports ProgressDeadlineExceeded. API validation and end-to-end tests cover the deadline bounds and timeout status.

Changes: Deployment progress deadline

Deadline field and API schema
api/v1/clusterobjectdeployment_types.go, applyconfigurations/api/v1/clusterobjectdeploymenttemplatespec.go, applyconfigurations/internal/internal.go, helm/olmv1/base/object-controller/crd/experimental/olm.operatorframework.io_clusterobjectdeployments.yaml, manifests/experimental*.yaml, docs/api-reference/olmv1-api-reference.md, api/v1/clusterobjectdeployment_types_test.go, api/v1/validation_test.go
The template API, apply configuration, and CRD schemas add the optional deadline field with 10–720 minute bounds. API tests check field retention and valid, invalid, and unset values.
Revision propagation and deployment status
internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller_test.go, applyconfigurations/api/v1/clusterobjectdeploymentstatus.go
buildClusterObjectSet copies the template deadline to each generated revision. When the latest revision reports ProgressDeadlineExceeded, the controller sets the deployment’s Progressing condition to False with that reason. Controller tests cover propagation and status behavior.
End-to-end timeout coverage
test/e2e/features/cod_progression_timeout.feature, test/e2e/steps/steps.go
The end-to-end scenario checks revision and deployment conditions after a progression timeout. The test steps support setting the ClusterObjectDeployment CRD field minimum.

Comment thread test/e2e/features/cod_progression_timeout.feature
Add spec.template.spec.progressDeadlineMinutes to ClusterObjectDeployment,
mirroring the field on ClusterObjectSet and ClusterExtension (minimum 10,
maximum 720 minutes). The value is passed through to each ClusterObjectSet
revision the deployment creates.

When the latest active revision reports Ready=False with reason
ProgressDeadlineExceeded, the deployment now reports Progressing=False with
reason ProgressDeadlineExceeded instead of an indefinitely-progressing
rollout, so the terminal state is actionable. The COD controller only reads
the revision's Ready condition; recording ProgressDeadlineExceeded on the
ClusterObjectSet remains the COS controller's responsibility.

The Available condition is unchanged: it stays True while any active revision
is Ready=True, so a deployment with a healthy prior revision remains available
even when a newer revision exceeds its deadline.

This field was previously guarded by TestClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateSchema
as a not-yet-implemented/controller-assigned field; that guard is updated to
reflect that it is now a user-settable template field. The top-level
spec.progressDeadlineMinutes remains a deferred (pruned) field.

Add e2e coverage in cod_progression_timeout.feature which lowers the deadline
minimum to 1 minute on both the ClusterObjectDeployment and ClusterObjectSet
CRDs (as the ClusterExtension progression test does) so the timeout path can be
exercised quickly, plus unit coverage for the passthrough and the Progressing
and Available behaviours.
