Description

Select the highest-priority catalog containing the requested package before filtering bundles. Fail on same-priority package ambiguity and do not fall through to a lower-priority catalog when the selected catalog has no eligible bundle.

Return the selected package's deprecation metadata on success and downstream resolution failure, including an empty deprecation value when no entries exist. Preserve the existing definition of package presence and update the catalog-selection guide.

Closes #3043

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes
    • Package resolution now considers catalogs in priority order and selects from the highest-priority group containing the package. If multiple catalogs in that group contain it, resolution reports ambiguity.
    • Version, channel, and upgrade constraints are applied within the selected catalog. If no bundles qualify, resolution fails without falling back to a lower-priority catalog.
    • Within a catalog, non-deprecated bundles are preferred, followed by the highest eligible version and release.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified catalog priority, ambiguity, and troubleshooting guidance, including how to identify the installed bundle and how catalogs are considered when no selector is set.

📝 Walkthrough

The catalog resolver now selects a catalog by package presence and priority before resolving bundles. Controller wiring, resolver tests, end-to-end expectations, and catalog-selection documentation reflect this behavior.

Changes: Catalog resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select a catalog by package and priority
internal/operator-controller/resolve/catalog.go, internal/operator-controller/resolve/catalog_test.go, cmd/operator-controller/main.go, docs/concepts/controlling-catalog-selection.md
The resolver uses separate catalog-listing and package-lookup functions. It checks priority groups in order, selects the first group containing the package, and reports ambiguity if multiple catalogs in that group contain it. Tests and documentation describe package-level selection and the updated example.
Resolve bundles from the selected catalog
internal/operator-controller/resolve/catalog.go, internal/operator-controller/resolve/catalog_test.go, internal/operator-controller/controllers/clusterextension_controller_test.go, internal/operator-controller/controllers/clusterextension_reconcile_steps.go, test/e2e/features/*
Bundle filters and validation run against the selected catalog. Resolution errors and deprecation data reflect that catalog. Tests cover bundle resolution, and controller and end-to-end expectations reflect updated errors.

Explanation

The description explains the implementation, motivation, issue reference, deprecation behavior, and documentation update. It includes the required sections, although the reviewer checklist remains unchecked and no test results are reported.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within #3043. Resolver wiring, resolver tests, controller deprecation handling, catalog-selection documentation, and end-to-end expectation updates support package-first catalog selection and its error and deprecation behavior. No unrelated product behavior is shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The resolver implements the main #3043 behavior. It selects catalogs by descending priority before bundle filtering, fails on same-priority package ambiguity, prevents lower-priority fallback after package selection, and returns selected-catalog deprecation data on downstream failure. The tests cover these behaviors. However, api/v1/clustercatalog_types.go still describes priority as a generic tie-breaker between catalogs that meet requirements. It does not describe package-first precedence, as required by #3043. The catalog-selection guide is updated, but the API description is not.

Resolution

Update the ClusterCatalogSpec.Priority API documentation in api/v1/clustercatalog_types.go to state that clients consider priority groups after package presence is determined, select the highest-priority catalog containing the package, and do not use bundle eligibility to fall back to a lower-priority catalog.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 7.69% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 39 functions across 5 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Select a catalog based on package presence within descending priority groups before applying bundle filters. Fail on same-priority package ambiguity and keep selected-catalog deprecation metadata available when bundle resolution fails.

Explain package-first priority, same-priority ambiguity, and no fallback to lower-priority catalogs after a package is selected. Correct the example so priority determines the selected catalog.

Update the ClusterCatalog priority API description.

The current description still defines priority as a client tie-breaker and tells clients to prompt for input. The resolver now selects by package presence and fails when multiple same-priority catalogs contain the package. Update this description to match the package-first contract.

Suggested fix
-	// Clients use the ClusterCatalog priority as a tie-breaker between ClusterCatalogs that meet their requirements.
-	// Higher numbers mean higher priority.
+	// During each resolution, catalogs are considered from highest priority to lowest.
+	// If exactly one catalog at a priority contains the requested package, that catalog is selected.
+	// If multiple catalogs at the same priority contain the package, resolution fails due to ambiguity.
+	// If no catalog at a priority contains the package, the next lower priority is considered.
 	//
-	// Clients decide how to handle scenarios where multiple ClusterCatalogs with the same priority meet their requirements.
-	// Clients should prompt users for additional input to break the tie.
+	// Bundle eligibility does not resolve package ambiguity or cause fallback to another catalog.

Update the priority documentation on ClusterCatalog to describe package-first
resolution: consider catalogs from highest to lowest priority, select a catalog
when it is the only one at that priority containing the requested package, fail
on multiple matches at the same priority, and continue to lower priorities when
there is no match. Remove the client tie-breaker and prompt-for-input guidance;
clarify that bundle eligibility does not resolve package ambiguity or trigger

Document per-resolution catalog selection.

The guide does not state that catalog selection is reevaluated for each resolution. A lower-priority catalog may be selected when a higher-priority catalog no longer contains the package. This is distinct from fallback to the installed bundle after catalog deletion.

Suggested fix
 3. If multiple catalogs in the group contain the package, resolution fails due to ambiguity, even if only one has a bundle matching the requested criteria.

+Catalog selection is reevaluated for each resolution. If a higher-priority catalog no longer contains the package, a lower-priority catalog may be selected on a later resolution. This is separate from fallback to an already installed bundle after catalog deletion.
+
Within the selected catalog, non-deprecated bundles are preferred over deprecated bundles, then the highest eligible version and release is chosen. Deprecation in another catalog does not affect catalog selection.
