Description

ClusterObjectDeployment progress deadlines need durable evidence that a rollout phase completed. Record each ClusterObjectSet phase's first successful completion in status.observedPhases[].completedAt, retaining the timestamp across retries, controller restarts, and later health regressions.

Record milestones in phase order, excluding downstream phases that are still paused and phases containing objects adopted by a newer revision. API validation prevents changing or clearing a recorded timestamp, including by removing its observed phase entry. Regenerate the apply configurations, DeepCopy methods, CRD, and experimental manifests.

This is the first prerequisite for OPRUN-4791. The COD deadline API and deadline enforcement follow in separate changes.

Validation

  • go test -tags=containers_image_openpgp ./api/v1 ./internal/object-controller/controllers ./internal/object-controller/status -count=1 — 342 tests passed.
  • make lint — passed.
  • make lint-api-diff — no new API lint issues.
  • make generate manifests crd-ref-docs — passed.

Controller tests cover ordered phase completion, paused and superseded phases, and timestamp preservation after drift. API tests cover timestamp round trips and rejection of timestamp changes, removal, and phase-entry deletion.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • ClusterObjectSet status now records when each rollout phase completes successfully, providing a timestamp for rollout progress.
    • Completion timestamps are preserved across reconciliations and restarts, so phase milestones remain consistent.
    • The optional completedAt field is available in the API and configuration for observed phases.
  • Validation

    • Once recorded, a completion timestamp cannot be changed or removed.
    • A phase with a completion timestamp cannot be removed from observed phase history.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds an immutable CompletedAt timestamp to each observed phase. The reconciler records timestamps for leading completed phases. API validation and CRD schemas prevent changing or removing completed milestones.

Changes: Phase completion tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Observed phase contract and validation
api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go, api/v1/validation_test.go, api/v1/zz_generated.deepcopy.go, applyconfigurations/api/v1/observedphase.go, applyconfigurations/internal/internal.go, helm/olmv1/base/object-controller/crd/experimental/olm.operatorframework.io_clusterobjectsets.yaml, manifests/experimental*.yaml
ObservedPhase gains an optional CompletedAt timestamp. API and CRD validations prevent changing or removing a recorded timestamp and removing its completed phase. Apply configurations and deep-copy code include the field. Tests cover the validation rules.
Reconciliation completion tracking
internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectset_controller.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectset_controller_test.go
The reconciler timestamps leading complete phases that have no progressed objects. It preserves existing timestamps and stops at the first incomplete or superseded phase. Tests cover completion, drift, read-only downstream phases, and partially superseded phases.

Done. Changed the phase validation message to “completedAt is immutable once set” and regenerated the CRD and experimental manifests.

Nit: could this be converted to table-driven tests that have name, oldObservedPhases, newObservedPhases, and wantErr? Then iterate each of those descriptively named scenarios with identical test setup code that creates old, updates to new, and then asserts on wantErr. WDYT?

Done. Converted this to five named scenarios with name, oldObservedPhases, newObservedPhases, and wantErr, sharing the same create/update/assert setup. Successful updates also read the object back to verify timestamp persistence.

Record immutable first-completion timestamps for ClusterObjectSet phases
and retain them across retries and health regressions. Exclude downstream
phases that are still paused and objects handed to a newer revision.

These durable milestones allow OPRUN-4791 to measure rollout inactivity.
Cover ordered completion and timestamp immutability with controller and
API admission tests.

Protect completed timestamps when status is omitted.

ClusterObjectSet.Status is optional, but the retention rules are declared on ClusterObjectSetStatus. Kubernetes skips transition rules at an optional schema node when an update unsets that node. A /status request without status can therefore remove recorded timestamps without evaluating these rules.

Add a root-scoped transition rule that protects oldSelf.status, or enforce the same invariant in admission. Add an API-server test that submits an unstructured /status update without status.
