Summary

  • ClusterObjectSetSpec.collisionProtection already carried +required but its JSON tag had omitempty, allowing an empty string to be silently serialised. Remove omitempty so the JSON tag matches the validation marker.
  • ClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateSpec.collisionProtection was +optional. Promote it to +required, drop omitempty, and update its doc comment.
  • Update the ClusterObjectSetSpec.collisionProtection doc comment to remove "When set" phrasing that implied the field was optional.
  • Regenerate all derived artifacts: CRD YAMLs, manifests, applyconfigurations, and API reference docs.

Test plan

  • newTestClusterObjectDeployment now supplies CollisionProtectionPrevent so all existing tests remain valid.
  • Empty-value rejection cases added to the create ("collision protection empty") and update ("empty collision protection") validity tables.
  • TestClusterObjectDeploymentDoesNotDefaultTemplate replaced by TestClusterObjectDeploymentCollisionProtectionIsRequired, which verifies the field is rejected when empty and round-trips valid values correctly.
  • The update path in TestClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateIsMutable that cleared collisionProtection to "" is removed (no longer valid).
  • make verify passes clean.
  • Run make test-unit to confirm all unit tests pass.
  • Run make lint-api-diff to confirm no new API lint issues.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • API Changes

    • Collision protection is now required for cluster object deployment templates and cluster object sets.
    • Cluster object sets use the configured value as the default for phases and objects without overrides, with precedence: object > phase > spec.
    • Omitting collision protection is no longer treated as equivalent to explicitly selecting Prevent.
  • Documentation

    • Updated API references, schemas, manifests, and field descriptions to reflect the required setting and precedence rules.
  • Tests

    • Added validation coverage for missing, valid, and changing collision-protection values.

📝 Walkthrough

Template-level ClusterObjectDeployment collision protection is now required and serialized without omission. Tests reject empty values on creation and update. ClusterObjectSet documentation describes its default strategy and object > phase > spec precedence.

Changes: Collision protection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update collision-protection API contracts
api/v1/clusterobjectdeployment_types.go, api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go, helm/olmv1/base/object-controller/crd/experimental/*clusterobjectdeployments.yaml, helm/olmv1/base/object-controller/crd/experimental/*clusterobjectsets.yaml, applyconfigurations/api/v1/*, manifests/experimental*.yaml, docs/api-reference/olmv1-api-reference.md
The ClusterObjectDeployment template field is required and no longer uses omitempty. The ClusterObjectSet field documentation describes the default strategy and object > phase > spec precedence. Related schemas and API documentation reflect these contracts.
Validate required template values
api/v1/clusterobjectdeployment_types_test.go
Tests reject empty template collision protection during creation and update. They cover valid values and initialize the standard fixture with Prevent.

🟡 Minor · Regenerate the API reference for the complete collisionProtection… · olmv1-api-reference.md:495

docs/api-reference/olmv1-api-reference.md:495
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Regenerate the API reference for the complete collisionProtection contract.

The reference now marks the template field as required, but it still omits the required ClusterObjectSetSpec.collisionProtection field. It also spells the phase fallback as .spec.collistionProtection. Regenerate the reference so it documents the complete object > phase > spec contract and uses .spec.collisionProtection. This is separate from the serialization issue.

Suggested fix

Regenerate the API reference from the current API declarations. The generated output must include the ClusterObjectSetSpec entry and replace the misspelled fallback:

-| `collisionProtection` _[CollisionProtection](#collisionprotection)_ | collisionProtection specifies the default collision protection strategy for all objects<br />in this phase. Individual objects can override this value.<br />When set, this value is used as the default for any object in this phase that does not<br />explicitly specify its own collisionProtection.<br />When omitted, we use .spec.collistionProtection as the default for any object in this phase that does not<br />explicitly specify its own collisionProtection. | | Enum: [Prevent IfNoController None] <br />Optional: \{\} <br /> |

Nit: This would ignore all lint errors on this field. Might be better to setup a lint config file with lintersConfig.requiredFields.omitempty: Ignore

overriding api lint failures:

api/v1/clusterobjectdeployment_types.go:75:2:kubeapilinter:requiredfields: field ClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateSpec.CollisionProtection should have the omitempty tag.
api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go:154:2:kubeapilinter:requiredfields: field ClusterObjectSetSpec.CollisionProtection should have the omitempty tag.

omitempty is not needed for required - will fix later in the linter configuration for a more permanent fix

adding lgtm to move this along

…terObjectDeployment

- ClusterObjectSetSpec.CollisionProtection already carried +required but
its json tag still had omitempty, letting Go serialise an empty string
silently. Remove omitempty and clarify the doc comment to remove
"When set" phrasing that implied optionality.

- ClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateSpec.CollisionProtection was +optional.
Promote it to +required, drop omitempty, and update its doc comment.

- Regenerate all derived artifacts: CRD YAMLs, manifests, applyconfigurations,
and API reference docs. collisionProtection now appears in the required list
for spec.template.spec in the ClusterObjectDeployment CRD.

- Update tests: newTestClusterObjectDeployment now supplies a default
CollisionProtectionPrevent value; add empty-value rejection cases to
the create and update validity tables; replace the
DoesNotDefaultTemplate test (which relied on omitting the field) with
CollisionProtectionIsRequired; remove the now-invalid update path that
  cleared the field to "".

spec.template.spec.collisionProtection is now a required field (operator-framework#3039), so the
controller no longer needs to default it when building a ClusterObjectSet.
buildClusterObjectSet copies the template value directly, and the defaulting
helper and its test are removed.
