Since this field is required, no need for omitempty:

Good catch! The linter anyway (make api-lint-diff) enforces it for required fields:
api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go:51:2:kubeapilinter:requiredfields: field ClusterObjectSetSpec.Group should have the omitempty tag.
Seems it is deliberate for RequiredFields in kube-api-linter to cope with serialization: serializing without omitempty would serialize and empty group with an empty string (which also violates the validation rule of at least 1 char).

Weird. Seeing "omitempty" on a required field is non-sensical to me. The field is required, therefore it simply is not possible for it to be empty, at which point "omitempty" is a distraction. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the nuance that doc is trying to explain.
I don't think it technically matters since that'll never actually come into play with the field being required and between 1 and 52 chars long.
What is your perspective of this linter rule? Does it make sense to you, or should we set to Ignore?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Well, I agree it is a bit weird. I think the rationale is that for any reasons the group string is not set it gets serialized to the empty string which is invalid.
The point is exactly the "for any reason": I cannot spot any reason, maybe a weird scenario somewhere were the code serializing the COS is not ours and would make a deserialization to fail? 🤔
My guess is that the "omitempty" requirement is for being on the extra safe side. Since this check has been added to the kupe-api-linter by purpose and does not cause any harm to our code I would lean toward keeping the omitempty.
Anyway, I have not strong opinions, so I would not argue to wave the linter setting this specific polity to Ignore repo-wide. Still we cannot ignore the omitzero in the linter config, the option is not there 🤯

make lint-api-diff complains here too:
api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go:594:2:kubeapilinter:requiredfields: field ClusterObjectSet.Spec does not allow the zero value. It must have the omitzero tag.
I would leave it.

Are owner refs relevant to this test case? If not, drop these? If so, perhaps we need specific archival test cases that prove all the various ownerref combos have the expected behavior?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The owner variations are intentional: same-group predecessors must be archived even when ownerless or differently owned, while another group must remain active despite sharing the owner. I’ll make that purpose explicit in the case name and fixtures. Owner combinations are also covered by the lookup and E2E tests.

Not sure if it's just me, but I'm having a hard time separating the wheat from the chaff in this test. I can't really tell what behavior we're asserting here. Perhaps refactor this to separate setup / scenario / assertions?
But also, this looks like a lot of setup. Is this a unit test or an integration test or...? My spidey sense is going off on this.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good call, it is a bit messy and should be improved.
The goal was to have coverage for the factory’s actual SSA manager and check the OLM annotation and managed-by label are present.
Going to separated the test into two independent scenarios and extract environment setup/cleanup.

Is this changing the test scenario somehow? I see revisionWithoutOwnerLabel is new in this PR, but I don't see any changes related to defaultDesiredRevision? Does defaultDesiredRevision no longer work for some reason?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
defaultDesiredRevision still works. revisionWithoutOwner is a copy of defaultDesiredRevision without the owner-name label. The switch is to exercise group-based discovery of an existing revision without that label.
I'll add a comment.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Is the owner-name label something that is now a relic of the past? Or is it still relevant to something in the new code? If a relic of the past, we may want to drop all of the test cases associated with it to avoid confusion about intent.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yep, it is a relic of the past now. Still... not sure the labels we will need for CE -> COD -> COS.
I would leave that call for when we introduce the COD.

If I understand this test assertion correctly, it is saying that we expect the CE reconciler to delete old revisions no matter their controller owners so that the total remaining set has no more than 5?
CE should definitely NOT delete COD or COS that it does not own.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good point: group membership should drive revision discovery, but it doesn’t authorize CE retention to delete unowned COS. Currently the PR deletes any COS regardless of the controller owner as here we "just" swapped label based tracking to group based tracking.
I would address this in a follow up PR since the behavior has not really changed, so not considering it a regression.

Sounds good. Let's make sure to explicitly capture that somewhere so we don't forget.

This sounds more like a separate explicit test case, right? But it's structured right now as something we assert in every single other test case.

Agreed. I’ll move this into explicit numbering and retention cases.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I asked above, and it is relevant here: does the owner label actually matter for anything anymore? Maybe we just drop anything in our tests that says "$specificLabel is irrelevant"... because yeah, random labels that we don't care about are obviously irrelevant.
It sounds like to do set the owner label in in whatever the CE manages still? So maybe it is relevant for us to have some testing around "yeah, we set this for $labelPurpose, but it is not meant to be used for $otherPurpose"?
And I assume $labelPurpose there would be "only cache COD/COS that carry our label"?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
There is no use for the labels in the actual code. They could just be for users lookup, as we still say so in docs/howto/how-to-grant-api-access.md.
Should we drop them right now? At some point we will have CE to track COD. I expect any decision on labels will be at that point, will not touch it right now.

What are these tests about? The intent here is hard for me to extract from the test code.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This covers the existing Apply() fallback when bundle content is unavailable. The test verifies that revision discovery now uses spec.group instead of the owner-name label; the fallback logic itself is unchanged.
I just realized anyway that this duplicates the group-membership coverage already provided by TestListForGroup, so going to remove this additional test.

Require an immutable group identifier for revision tracking and display it in the Group printer column. Define revision sequences by group regardless of owner references and describe ClusterObjectSet independently of its current CE parent. Regenerate apply configurations and experimental CRDs and manifests from the group API specification. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: Francesco Giudici <fgiudici@redhat.com>
Populate and index spec.group, query revision chains by group, and map COS events to the ClusterExtension named by the group. Share SSA field ownership across revisions while retaining the OLM metadata prefix. Use the whole group for sibling discovery, numbering, status, migration lookup, fallback, and retention regardless of owner references. Keep CE controller ownership for generated and Helm-migrated revisions. Cover admission, cache isolation, owner changes, event mapping, lifecycle behavior across owners, and SSA handoff. Mark the CE integration points that future COD support will replace. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: Francesco Giudici <fgiudici@redhat.com>
Check generated groups, shared SSA ownership during rollout, pruning isolation, and cascade cleanup. Update direct COS fixtures and query revision associations by spec.group. Exercise handoffs between different owners and between owned and ownerless revisions. Verify the workload UID and contents survive previous-revision archival. Verify different groups still collide even when they share a controller owner. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: Francesco Giudici <fgiudici@redhat.com>
Declare spec.group as a selectable field in the experimental COS CRD and regenerate the installation manifests. Document the kubectl field selector in place of filtering a full resource list with jq. Verify API-server filtering with an uncached envtest client, covering multiple revisions in one group, a different group, and no matches. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: Francesco Giudici <fgiudici@redhat.com>
Rename ListForClusterExtension to ListForGroup and accept a group string. Have CE callers pass the extension name explicitly, preserving group selection, revision ordering, error propagation, and lifecycle handling. Use a group distinct from the owner name in the existing lookup test to verify that the helper depends only on its group argument. Show revision numbers in ClusterObjectSet listings and mark the future move of archival decisions to ClusterObjectDeployment. Clarify group handoff scenarios and UID preservation, rename the owner placeholders, and cover handoffs between two ownerless revisions. Remove obsolete owner-label lookup fixtures and use API-server group selection in the E2E helper. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: Francesco Giudici <fgiudici@redhat.com>
Add the TODO beside the ClusterObjectSet API description so the archival wording can be updated when decisions move to ClusterObjectDeployment. Keep the note separate from godoc to avoid publishing internal TODOs. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: Francesco Giudici <fgiudici@redhat.com>
Make validation fixtures explicit, clarify group-based lookup and archival coverage, and separate the SSA factory integration scenarios. Move the shared fake-client index helper into internal/testutil. Require Active when selecting revisions, register the Helm tracking cache alongside controller setup, and generalize index setup errors. Give cross-group numbering and retention dedicated Apply test cases. Remove the unrelated fixture from shared setup and drop redundant fallback coverage; the fallback logic itself is unchanged. Remove the unenforced consecutive revision requirement and regenerate the affected API descriptions. Mark the future COD documentation update. Description
Implement OPRUN-4739 by introducing required, immutable
ClusterObjectSet.spec.groupas the identity of a revision sequence. Revision lookup and handoff use the group regardless of controller owner references, including for ownerless revisions. For example, two revisions in the same group can hand off workload objects even with different owners; revisions in different groups remain subject to collision protection even when they share an owner.ClusterExtension remains the parent API in this intermediate step. Generated and Helm-migrated COS use the CE name as their group and retain CE controller owner references for cascading garbage collection. This implements the group behavior described in OPRUN-4781; introducing COD and its adoption/ownership-conflict behavior (OPRUN-4783) remains future work.
