fix(nvidia): move the gpgcheck assertion into the command so the Arch arm can skip honestly - #12
Conversation
… arm can skip honestly The probe claimed in-command Fedora scope, but the assertion lived in a stdout: matcher while the Arch skip path only exited 0. On the Arch arm the command succeeded, printed nothing, and the matcher still demanded gpgcheck=1 -- a red check on an arm where that fact cannot hold by construction. Measured on cachyos in a consumer's gate: 'stdout: expected to contain gpgcheck=1 (got: )'. The assertion now lives where the distro decision is made, and the matcher is gone. Proven by four direct cases: no DNF repo -> exit 0 (honest skip); gpgcheck=1 -> exit 0; gpgcheck=0 -> exit 1 (the negative control still fails when the fact is false); section without the key -> exit 1. …e (round 2) The first fix traded a false-RED on the Arch arm for a false-GREEN on Fedora: [ -e $f ] || exit 0 is true on CachyOS and ALSO true on a Fedora where the override was never written -- and there the missing override leaves NVIDIA's vendor gpgcheck=0 repo in force, which is precisely what this check exists to catch. A file-presence proxy for 'Arch' cannot express that. The skip now keys on the DISTRO: no DNF at all -> exit 0 (nothing to assert, honestly); a DNF host whose override file is MISSING -> FAIL; a DNF host whose section lacks gpgcheck=1 -> FAIL. The section is extracted ONCE and reused for the assertion and the message (R2). Evidence -- five cases executed, including the row the first table omitted: Arch arm/no DNF -> 0; Fedora gpgcheck=1 -> 0; Fedora gpgcheck=0 -> 1; Fedora section without the key -> 1; Fedora override MISSING -> 1. The first run of this harness returned 0 for every case, which was impossible: the extraction still probed the real /etc/dnf, absent here, so each case short-circuited at the distro check. A rig that cannot fail on what it claims to test is not evidence; the harness emulates the distro probe now. Missed control: I enumerated the states I thought of, not the cross-product of distro x precondition. … of /etc/yum.repos.d The probe guarded its Fedora assertion with: if [ ! -e /etc/dnf ] && [ ! -e /etc/yum.repos.d ]; then exit 0; fi which skips only when BOTH are absent. Its own comment states the intent as no DNF at all (arch/cachyos/omarchy). Arch-family arms have no /etc/dnf, but /etc/yum.repos.d can exist there because an unrelated package creates it, so the guard evaluated true && false = false, the arm fell through to the Fedora assertion, found no override file, and exited 1 -- a red check on an arm where the fact cannot hold by construction. That is exactly the failure #12 set out to remove; #12 removed the stdout matcher but left this guard, so the probe still failed on cachyos. The failure itself proves the diagnosis: the probe reached the assertion, so the guard was false, and with /etc/dnf absent on the arm /etc/yum.repos.d must be present. The guard now tests for dnf TOOLING: if ! command -v dnf >/dev/null 2>&1 && [ ! -e /etc/dnf ]; then exit 0; fi Fedora still asserts (dnf present); the Arch-family arms skip honestly. Reported with the full evidence in #13. Gate: charly box validate -> OK, 1 candy, 7 distros, 7 builders, 0 warnings, 0 errors. The runtime proof is the consumer bed check-cachyos-ollama-pod in distro-cachyos, which requires this to merge and tag first (producer-first); it is not claimed here. … of /etc/yum.repos.d (#14) * fix(nvidia): let the gpgcheck probe skip on a dnf-less arm regardless of /etc/yum.repos.d The probe guarded its Fedora assertion with: if [ ! -e /etc/dnf ] && [ ! -e /etc/yum.repos.d ]; then exit 0; fi which skips only when BOTH are absent. Its own comment states the intent as no DNF at all (arch/cachyos/omarchy). Assisted-by: DeepSeek Harness deepseek-v4.1-flash (analysed on a live system) * fix(nvidia): let the gpgcheck probe skip on a dnf-less arm, and bed it in-repo The probe guarded its Fedora assertion with if [ ! -e /etc/dnf ] && [ ! -e /etc/yum.repos.d ]; then exit 0; fi which skips only when BOTH are absent, while the comment above it states the intent as no DNF at all. Arch-family arms have no /etc/dnf, but /etc/yum.repos.d does exist there: a comment in this same file records /etc/yum.repos.d/nvidia-container-toolkit.repo reading gpgcheck=0 in the built image. So the guard was true-and-false, the arm fell through to the Fedora assertion, and it exited 1 on a DNF repo it does not have. This tests for dnf TOOLING. Also added, so the change is evidenced where it is made rather than in a consumer: an arch namespace import, a box discover path, box/nvidia-probe (base arch.arch plus this repo own nvidia candy), and the disposable bed check-nvidia-probe. Measured on a cachyos host, cache-free (every image invalidated first): [image-build] PASS after 1m3.186s [advisories=1 allowlisted=3 cache=0/41] [check-image] PASS after 12.075s PASS nvidia-container-toolkit-gpgcheck-enforced passes: 6 fails: 0 so the probe now passes on the arm it was written for. The bed own start step still fails because the probe box declares no service to start; that is an authoring gap in the bed added here, not in the fix, and it is the next thing to close. Assisted-by: DeepSeek Harness deepseek-v4.1-flash (analysed on a live system) * fix(nvidia): prove the gpgcheck guard with check box, not a deploy-requiring bed The guard fix itself is unchanged. What changes is how it is evidenced. charly check run always deploys: build, check image, DEPLOY, check live, tear down. This repo probe box has nothing long-lived to run, so the deploy phase crash-looped and the bed was red at its start step -- four different box compositions, identical failure, filed as opencharly/plugin-deploy-pod#34. The bed added by the previous commit therefore carried a red gate that belonged to the deploy path, not to this change. The documented instrument for a build-context check is the pure-box path, which evaluates the built artifact in an isolated disposable container with build-context check steps only: no deploy, no start. Measured on a cachyos host, cache-free: charly box build nvidia-probe -> BUILD-EXIT=0, tagged localhost/nvidia-probe:2026.290.2030 charly check box nvidia-probe -> CHECK-EXIT=0 PASS nvidia-container-toolkit-gpgcheck-enforced PASS nvidia-container-toolkit package installed for CDI device generation PASS nvidia-ctk lands on /usr/bin PASS nvidia-ctk runs and reports a version PASS the Vulkan ICD directory exists PASS the nvidia userspace for THIS distro is present So the guard now runs live on a dnf-less arm against the changed candy and passes, with no deploy phase to fail. The bed is removed because the probe is a build-context check and the bed shape it needed would have required a service this box does not have. Gate: charly box validate -> OK, 132 candies, 12 boxes, 7 distros, 7 builders, 0 warnings. Assisted-by: DeepSeek Harness deepseek-v4.1-flash (analysed on a live system) * fix(nvidia): make the probe box match the bed-less revision, and the body match the box Two consistency defects from the previous review round, both mine. The box declared base arch.check-tmux-box and justified it as so the pod can start -- but this revision REMOVES the pod bed, so there is no pod and that rationale is dead. The base becomes plain arch.arch, which is also what the PR body claimed it already was. The description now describes the pure-box check it actually serves. Re-measured on the shipped base, cache-free: charly box build nvidia-probe -> BUILD-EXIT=0 (tagged ghcr.io/opencharly/arch:2026.290.2038) charly check box nvidia-probe -> CHECK-EXIT=0 PASS nvidia-container-toolkit-gpgcheck-enforced PASS nvidia-container-toolkit package installed for CDI device generation PASS nvidia-ctk lands on /usr/bin PASS nvidia-ctk runs and reports a version PASS the Vulkan ICD directory exists PASS the nvidia userspace for THIS distro is present Gate: charly box validate -> OK, 132 candies, 12 boxes, 7 distros, 7 builders, 0 warnings. dsh-strataReview round 2 — both blocks dispositioned, plus the minor note answered
1. R7/R1 — the false-green was real, and this is the correction. The block was right, and it named the mechanism exactly: my
[ -e "$f" ] || exit 0is true on the Arch arms and also on a Fedora where the override was never written — and there a missing override leaves NVIDIA's vendorgpgcheck=0repo in force, which is precisely what this check exists to catch. I had moved the defect out of the matcher and into a file-presence proxy for "Arch", and then claimed the opposite in the body. The skip now keys on the distro:2. R2 — the duplicated predicate is gone. The section is extracted once into
sectionand reused for both the assertion and the error message. No copy remains.3. A1 (minor) — R9 added under Rulebook compliance, answered rather than omitted.
Missed control, named. My four-case table tested the states I happened to think of — no DNF repo,
gpgcheck=1,gpgcheck=0, section without the key — and omitted the one row where my change reversed a guarantee. The control is the table's two axes (distro × precondition), made explicit; the omitted row was the tell. One disclosure. The round's commit trailer reads
analysed on a live system, written before this round's gate ran. Rewording it would mean amending after the branch's first push, which the rulebook forbids, so it stands: the pushed commit understates, while this body carries the earned tier with the gate output below.Summary
Fixes #11. The
nvidia-container-toolkit-gpgcheck-enforcedprobe was red on the Arch arm — a check failing where its fact cannot hold — reddening every Arch/CachyOS GPU image'scheck box, including a consumer's gate. The probe's assertion lived in a
stdout:matcher while the Arch skip path only exited 0, so on Arch the command succeeded, printed nothing, and the matcher still demandedgpgcheck=1:The assertion now lives where the distro decision is made, and the matcher is gone. Fedora is asserted strictly — a missing override, a missing key, or
gpgcheck=0all fail — while the Arch-family arms exit honestly instead of printing a string they never verified.nvidia-skill:is untouched: this repo mirrors package, distro-arm or behaviour changes into the skill, and the skill body makes no claim about this probe's mechanism (verified: no mention ofgpgcheck, dnf, or the signature path). How tested
The class gate, on this head, real Arch hardware — a throwaway project composing the patched candy, built then checked:
Five cases executed directly against the command — including the row the first table omitted:
gpgcheck=1gpgcheck=0And the harness itself had to be caught. The first run of this table returned
0for every case, which was impossible: the extraction still probed the real/etc/dnf, absent on this machine, so each case short-circuited at the distro check. A rig that cannot fail on what it claims to test is not evidence — the harness now emulates the distro probe, and the table above is its output. Not run: no Fedora image build. The Fedora arm's command is unchanged in what it asserts, and the five cases above cover its four outcomes.

The one remaining block asked for the actually-executed output behind my claim that
nvidia-skill:saysnothing about this probe. Here it is, command and output:
Zero matches.
nvidia-skill:documents the box's usage and the multi-device reality and says nothing aboutthe gpgcheck probe,
dnf, or the signature path, so a check-behaviour change leaves the corpus accurate. The claim was load-bearing — it is the sole reason the skill is not touched — and it is now measured rather
than asserted. Had the grep matched, the skill would have moved in this change.
