feat(agent-monitor): group and sort the roster independently - #433
The roster had one "grouping" setting and one sort, coupled: choosing project grouping forced triage order, and the only way to see agents by recency or title was to drop into a flat list. There was no way to group by host or by agent type, so a multi-host roster could not be read host by host.
Change
Grouping and sorting are now independent axes, exposed as two rows in the roster header:
So a host group still sorts its rows by recency, or a type group by title. Host and type become real roster groupings in monitor.ts (groupByHost, groupByProvider, NamedGroup), with their headers collapsible like project headers, including the expanded accessibility state. Keys avoid the existing view (R/G/O) and filter (A/T/U/I/C) letters. Both choices persist in the host-scoped monitor settings, and the settings screen exposes the two new grouping values.
Testing
124 tests green, including new coverage for host and provider grouping, roster building on both, and the key map (unique keys across both axes, unrelated keys ignored).
Coverage 96.73 lines / 93.78 functions, above the repo gates. tsc and biome clean.
Verified in the app on a 0.14.0 daemon: Y grouped into claude and opencode, collapsing opencode went from 27 rows to 11, N removed group headers, Z ordered blog first, and the choice survived a reload.
Note: this text was produced with AI assistance, and the change was reviewed and tested in the app by the author.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Organize the agent roster by Project, Workspace, Host, Type, or show it without groups.
Choose how agents are sorted within groups: Triage, Recent, or A–Z.
Use keyboard shortcuts to change grouping and sorting; your layout choices are saved.
Collapse and expand Host and Type groups, with entry counts and indented agent lists.
Manage layout options in the host-native settings screen.
Bug Fixes
Display an error when saving layout settings fails.
Group by project, workspace, host, type or none (P/W/H/Y/N) and sort each group by triage, recency or title (S/E/Z). Host and type groups collapse like project headers, and the choice persists in the host settings. Replaces the single preset row.

Walkthrough
The monitor adds independent grouping and sorting controls, keyboard shortcuts, and collapsible host- and provider-grouped rosters. The settings schema accepts the new grouping modes, and the README describes the controls and saved choices.
Changes: Monitor layout controls
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Grouping and sorting choices agent-monitor/shared/monitor-settings.ts, agent-monitor/client/layout-keys.ts, agent-monitor/tests/layout-keys.test.ts
The settings schema and grouping options add Host and Type. Choice lists define grouping and sorting labels, hints, and shortcut keys. Key lookup returns a grouping or sort patch for recognized single-character keys.
Host and provider roster groups agent-monitor/client/monitor.ts, agent-monitor/tests/monitor-shared.test.ts
The roster adds host and provider group variants. Helpers group and sort entries, and buildRoster dispatches the new modes to those helpers. Tests cover group labels, activity sorting, and roster kinds.
Roster controls and rendering agent-monitor/client/agent-monitor.tsx, agent-monitor/README.md
The roster exposes Group and Sort controls, handles shortcut keys, and renders collapsible named groups. Layout changes are saved with the current settings revision, and save errors appear in the roster. The README documents the controls and saved choices.

Layout preferences can be lost after a failed save, and screen-reader users may not hear the failure. These are localized issues with visible fallback behavior but should be addressed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 72e3c
The changes remain within roster presentation and shared display preferences. No expanded access or agent-operation authority was identified. Saved grouping values introduce a backward-compatibility question for rollback to an older version.
Retained concerns
Low · architecture · inferred: New host/provider grouping values can be persisted in the shared version-1 settings document, but the base version-1 schema does not accept them. If an older reader validates that document unchanged, rollback or mixed-version use could replace the roster with the invalid-settings screen. Runtime compatibility handling is unverified; reset remains an available recovery path.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Persisted layout changes affect monitor preferences shared by clients connected to the settings host. Provider groups may combine entries from several monitored hosts, but grouping does not itself grant access to another host or select an operation target.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Multi-host aggregation attaches host provenance to each entry. Named-group headers render data-derived names as text, while rows retain the original entries. Navigation uses the entry's agent ID and host scope; archive dispatch partitions IDs by their entry-derived host. These action paths predate the PR and do not use the displayed group name as authority.

Explanation
The title "feat(agent-monitor): group and sort the roster independently" names the main change in the changeset. The PR separates roster grouping from sorting, adds Host and Type (provider) grouping modes, and adds the Group and Sort controls, layout keys, and settings persistence that support them. The title is specific, short, and follows a conventional commit format.

Two layout clicks can arrive before the first settings write lands; the second used a stale revision and Paseo rejected it, dropping the choice silently. Queue the patch, save it once the pending write resolves, and show saveError in the roster.
