feat: add mcp option to turn off the Vite DevTools MCP endpoint - #1149
User feedback on 4.0.0: there is no obvious way to turn off the MCP tools, and having them on by default appears to cause errors in some setups.
Changes
New devtools.mcp option (boolean | 'auto', default 'auto' — Vite DevTools' own default). It is forwarded to Vite DevTools' mcp setting; an explicit vite.devtools.mcp still wins.
The Vite DevTools defaults Nuxt DevTools sets (clientAuth, terminal auth banner, branding, mcp) are now collected once and applied to both install paths. On Vite < 8.3 the manually installed DevTools() plugin overwrites config.devtools, so before this change only branding reached it: disableAuthorization and the terminal banner were silently ignored there.
Docs: added the option to the module options table and the v4 upgrade guide.
Verification
playgrounds/empty with NUXT_DEVTOOLS_LOCAL=1, sending an MCP initialize POST to /__devtools/__mcp:
Add a `devtools.mcp` module option (`boolean | 'auto'`) that controls the
Vite DevTools MCP endpoint, so users can turn it off without reaching into
`vite.devtools`.
Nuxt DevTools' Vite DevTools defaults (`clientAuth`, the terminal auth
banner, `branding`, and now `mcp`) are collected once and applied to both
install paths. Before, only `branding` reached the manually installed
`DevTools()` plugin on Vite < 8.3, which overwrites `config.devtools`, so
`disableAuthorization` and the terminal banner were silently ignored there.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The mcp module option is now documented and typed as boolean | 'auto'. enableModule collects MCP and other Vite DevTools settings in a shared defaults object. For Vite 8.3 and later, unset configuration properties receive these defaults. For older Vite versions, the manually installed DevTools plugin receives the defaults.
On older Vite versions, explicit MCP and authentication settings may not take effect, including a request to disable MCP. Resolve or explicitly accept this compatibility-path behavior before merging.

Preserve Vite configuration precedence on the manual path.
On Vite versions below 8.3, DevTools(viteDevToolsDefaults) can overwrite explicit vite.devtools settings. This can ignore settings such as vite.devtools.mcp: false and vite.devtools.clientAuth: true.
Merge the user's Vite DevTools configuration over these defaults before installing the manual plugin.
