Allow description of devices with modular design #324
As reported at Plasa 2026: Some devices now provide configuration of internal modules, instead of complete DMX modes. For example, instead of:
Mode 1 RGB
Mode 2 RGBW
Mode 3 RGBAL
There is:
Module 1 with:
RGB
RGBW
RGBAL
Module 2 with:
White
Strobing
Tungsten
Module 3 with:
Pixel
Wash
Effects
In total, this creates a combination of 27 DMX modes (3^3). Current solution is to create these 27 modes.
In some cases, these "modules" might have their own DMX Break, as they can be patched separately.
Support in GDTF would require not only definition of these modules (most likely they would always had to target the same geometrical tree), but also different approach in DMX consoles, where instead of DMX Modes, one would provide "Settings information" to pick which of these "modules" would be used to assemble a DMX mode.
Patching these as individual fixtures is possible only for DMX control, but is not suitable for previz.
For only ChannelFunctions changes, we have existing proposal of the Settings object #141 , but this modular approach requires replacement of complete DMX channels, not only ChannelFunctions.
We have discussed it. At this point, the solution is to define all these modes.
Ideally, the device would generate GDTF by itself, like it already happens with some media servers. In that case, the control system could receive the generated GDTF file without anyone having to create it. This would be much easier system for both the manufacturer and for the operator.
