docusaurus serve sends no Cache-Control header, so browsers fall back to their caching heuristics. Both problems below reproduce in Chromium:
Stale pages after a rebuild. serve-handler sends Last-Modified without Cache-Control, so browsers reuse a page without asking the server for 10% of the file's age. After a rebuild, the browser can show the old HTML, which can load JS chunks that the build deleted.
Redirect loops after a config change. serve-handler's 301 redirects (clean URLs, trailing slash, //) have no cache header, so Chromium caches them forever. Switching trailingSlash, or serving another site on the same port, gives ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS until the user clears the browser cache.
This PR makes docusaurus serve send explicit caching headers:
Responses
Cache-Control
Validator
Files in /assets/
public, max-age=31536000, immutable
ETag
Everything else: pages, other static files, redirects, errors
no-cache
ETag for files
Why these choices
no-cache for every response: browsers ask the server before each reuse, so they always get the latest build and the redirects of the current baseUrl and trailingSlash config. Netlify, Vercel and Cloudflare Pages do the same by default for every static file (public, max-age=0, must-revalidate, which browsers treat like no-cache).
It's set with res.setHeader() before calling serve-handler, because its headers option doesn't apply to its redirects.
no-store would prevent 304 revalidations and keep pages out of the back/forward cache.
ETag instead of Last-Modified (serve-handler's etag: true option):
serve-handler only answers 304 to If-None-Match, never to If-Modified-Since.
docusaurus build empties the output folder, so every build gives every file a new modification time. The ETag is a SHA-1 of the content, which stays the same when a rebuild doesn't change the file.
Without Last-Modified, browsers have nothing to cache heuristically.
Cost: serve-handler hashes each file once, and again only when its modification time changes.
immutable for /assets/: the bundler adds a content hash to the names of the files it emits there ([name].[contenthash].js, [name]-[contenthash][ext]), so a URL never changes content. docusaurus.io sets the same in production (website/static/_headers), and Vercel recommends it for hashed assets.
It's set with serve-handler's headers option instead of a URL check in our handler, because that option only applies to existing files: a missing asset's 404 is never cached for one year (e.g. a chunk of an older build, requested again after rebuilding the same content).
Redirect status codes are unchanged. Once redirects are revalidated, keeping serve-handler's 301s is safe. Aligning the 301/302 mix with static hosts can be a separate PR.
Limits
Files in an assets folder of the static directories, like static/assets/, are copied to /assets/ without a content hash. The docs warn against it.
serve-handler sends its 304 responses without its headers, so revalidating an /assets/ file returns no-cache. Browsers don't revalidate a fresh immutable file, so this only affects files cached before this change.
The 301 redirects that older docusaurus serve versions already cached stay in browsers until users clear their cache.
Default caching headers of static hosts
Measured with curl on the slorber/trailing-slash-guide deployments and docusaurus.io, plus the docs of each host.
Redirects: GitHub Pages and Netlify send 301s, Cloudflare Pages and Vercel 308s. Only Vercel (max-age=0, must-revalidate) and GitHub Pages (max-age=600) send a Cache-Control header with them.
Test Plan
New tests describe the caching headers of pages, static files, assets, missing assets, errors and redirects (from Docusaurus and from serve-handler), with and without a baseUrl, and the 304 answer to a revalidation.
In Chromium, with the new request handler serving two pages that share a CSS file and an image: page 1 → page 2 → page 1 → reload. The assets were requested once and never again. The pages were revalidated on each visit and got a 304.
In Chromium, with serve-handler alone: toggling trailingSlash on the same port gave ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS without a Cache-Control header, and worked both ways with no-cache.
docusaurus serve now caches files under /assets/ for up to one year and requires browsers to revalidate other responses before using them.
Unchanged pages and assets can return a “not modified” response, avoiding the transfer of unchanged content.
Redirects and responses for missing resources also include revalidation headers.
Documentation
Updated serving and self-hosting guidance to explain caching behavior and note that static assets without content-hashed names may remain cached for a year.
Files in /assets/ get `Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable`:
the bundler adds a content hash to their names.
Everything else (pages, other static files, redirects, errors) gets
`Cache-Control: no-cache` and an ETag: browsers revalidate them before each
reuse, and get a 304 when the file content didn't change.

docusaurus serve now sets cache headers for responses, enables ETag revalidation, and applies a one-year immutable cache policy to assets. Tests cover these headers and revalidation. The CLI and deployment documentation describe the policy.
The handler sets Cache-Control: no-cache, enables ETags, and applies public, max-age=31536000, immutable to assets/** responses.

Test helpers describe caching headers and revalidation. Tests cover requests with and without a base URL and verify 304 no-cache for unchanged pages and assets. Documentation describes the policy for assets and other responses.

When static/assets/logo.png changes between builds, its URL stays the same. Browsers can reuse the old file for a year without contacting the server. Revalidate unhashed files instead of assigning immutable based only on their folder.
