If this is a code change: I have written unit tests and/or added dogfooding pages to fully verify the new behavior.
If this is a new API or substantial change: the PR has an accompanying issue (closes #0000) and the maintainers have approved on my working plan.
Motivation
Per CommonMark 0.31.2 §4.2 (ATX headings), an optional closing sequence of # characters on an ATX heading must be preceded by at least one space or tab. For example, # foo# renders as <h1>foo#</h1> because the closing # is not preceded by whitespace.
Previously, parseMarkdownContentTitle in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts stripped trailing hashes using:
Because \s* matched zero whitespace before #+$, document headings containing trailing hashes without preceding spaces (e.g. # Learn C# or # Learn F#) had their trailing # stripped and became "Learn C" or "Learn F" in document metadata (browser <title>, sidebar label, breadcrumbs, pagination).
This PR separates the custom anchor ID removal from the ATX closing sequence stripping and requires preceding whitespace (\s+#+$) for closing hashes, preserving language and library names ending in # while continuing to strip valid ATX closing # sequences and custom anchor IDs.
Markdown heading titles now preserve literal trailing # characters, including in names such as C# and F#, when headings use custom anchor IDs or closing hash markers. Titles remain accurate when both are present, and a heading containing only closing hash markers continues to produce an empty title.
…12644)
According to CommonMark 0.31.2 section 4.2, an optional closing sequence
of # characters on an ATX heading must be preceded by at least one space
or tab. Previously, parseMarkdownContentTitle used `\s*(?:\{#*[\w-]+\}|#+)$`
which matched trailing # characters even with zero preceding whitespace,
causing document titles such as `# Learn C#` or `# Learn F#` to drop their
trailing hash and become "Learn C" or "Learn F".
This separates custom anchor ID removal from ATX closing sequence
stripping and requires preceding whitespace (`\s+#+$`) for closing hashes,
preserving words and identifiers ending in # (such as C# or F#).

Walkthrough
parseMarkdownContentTitle now removes trailing hash marks before removing a trailing custom heading ID. Tests cover literal hashes in titles with custom IDs and closing-hash syntax, as well as a heading made only of closing hashes.

Match the closing # with spaces or tabs only.
The closing-hash cleanup at packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts:338 uses \s+#+$. In JavaScript, \s matches U+00A0 (no-break space). A heading such as # Title\u00A0# therefore loses its final # in the derived contentTitle. CommonMark requires the closing sequence to be preceded by spaces or tabs only, so the rendered heading keeps the #. The PR does not introduce this: the base regex \s*(?:\{#*[\w-]+\}|#+)$ strips the same input. Replace \s with [ \t] in that branch so the cleanup follows CommonMark.

Update the closing-hash cleanup in the markdown title derivation to match only
spaces or tabs before trailing hashes. Check the base regex in the same
derivation as well: if it also removes a hash preceded by a no-break space,
constrain that closing-hash alternative so such headings retain the final hash.

Unescape \# in parsed heading titles.
For # Learn C\#, parseMarkdownContentTitle returns Learn C\#. CommonMark renders \# as #, so the heading shows Learn C#, but the derived title keeps the backslash. The previous regex produced Learn C\, so this backslash predates the PR. Remove backslash escapes of ASCII punctuation from the title after the closing sequence is stripped.
