Gradle 9 removes top-level sourceCompatibility property support
High Severity
Bumping to Gradle 9.8.0 breaks the build because build.gradle sets sourceCompatibility and targetCompatibility directly on the project object. Gradle 9 removed JavaPluginConvention, so these top-level assignments now fail with "Could not set unknown property." They need to be moved inside a java { } extension block for Gradle 9 compatibility.

Maven publish plugin 0.30.0 incompatible with Gradle 9
High Severity
The com.vanniktech.maven.publish plugin version 0.30.0 in build.gradle is incompatible with Gradle 9.x. Gradle 9 removed APIs the plugin depends on (e.g., DefaultArtifactPublicationSet), causing NoSuchMethodError at configuration or publish time. Multiple projects confirmed this requires upgrading to at least version 0.36.0 for Gradle 9 compatibility.
