Summary

sd-server now applies ADetailer to generated images when --ad-model is configured.

Image generation request
  OpenAI-compatible / SDAPI / native async
    generate images
    if --ad-model is set
detect objects and run cropped inpainting
      return detailed images
report an error if detection or inpainting fails

Evidence

  • Before: Server image-generation routes did not run ADetailer after generation.
  • After: Windows Release builds of sd-server and sd-cli succeeded. With CPU SD1.5 and a YOLOv8 face detector, ADetailer succeeded through OpenAI-compatible, SDAPI txt2img/img2img, and native async requests; multi-output img2img was also checked. An invalid detector path returned HTTP 500.

Merge Danger

Door: Two-way

The change can be reverted. Requests without --ad-model bypass the new processing.

Blast Radius: Server

Related Issue / Discussion

Closes #2087.

Additional Information

The detector context is created per request, matching the existing CLI approach; high request volumes may repeat detector loading. When --ad-model is enabled, detector initialization or inpainting failure fails the request even if base image generation succeeded.

Checklist

  • I have read and confirmed this PR follows the contribution guidelines.

📝 Walkthrough

The server now parses configured ADetailer settings, applies detailing after image generation, tracks detailing progress, and reports failures. ADetailer also supports confidence-based mask selection, full-image inpainting, and RGBA preservation.

Changes: Server ADetailer integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
ADetailer option handling and image processing
src/detailer.h, src/detailer.cpp
ADetailer accepts area or confidence mask ranking and masked or full-image inpainting. Image preparation and compositing preserve the source channel count.
Server processing contract and implementation
examples/server/runtime.h, examples/server/runtime.cpp
The server adds ADetailer pass settings and applies configured passes to each non-null generated image. Processing failures and invalid outputs return failure.
SDAPI parsing and request flow
examples/server/routes_sdapi.cpp
SDAPI requests validate ADetailer structure, models, parameters, samplers, schedulers, and unsupported settings. Detailing runs after base generation, updates preview progress, and returns HTTP 500 on failure.
Generation-path wiring and documentation

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 83b0c

SDAPI clients can request ADetailer passes with very large dimensions or step counts and consume excessive server CPU and memory. Malformed ADetailer arguments are silently ignored instead of rejected. OpenAI and async requests detail images at 512x512 rather than at the generation size. Add limits to the ADetailer settings before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 83b0c

When detailing is enabled, a request can select excessive additional processing and occupy shared generation resources, delaying or exhausting service for other clients. Detector restrictions and failure cleanup limit other risks, but do not provide an effective processing budget.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new SDAPI detailing contract delegates additional memory and compute selection to request input without an effective server-side work budget. Large detailing dimensions and step counts, multiplied across passes, images, and detected masks, execute while holding the shared generation-context mutex. This materially expands resource-exhaustion opportunities beyond the existing base-generation dimension weakness and can deny generation capacity to other clients.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A client able to submit SDAPI requests to a detector-enabled server can contend with all generation users sharing that server context. Excessive detailing can occupy shared CPU or accelerator resources and create memory pressure within the server process; the demonstrated scope is that server instance, not independent environments or data stores.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained denial-of-service findings converge on the same request-to-resource boundary. SDAPI accepts detailing dimensions and steps up to INT_MAX after base parameter validation; runtime forwards them into repeated detailing calls, and native validation checks positivity rather than practical ceilings. Applicable masks lead to crop allocations and generation using those values. Base dimension exposure predates this PR, but the added detailing step override and repeated post-generation work are new.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The parser constrains detector identity, supported settings, numeric types, and several mask operations. Those controls govern what processing is permitted but do not establish an aggregate resource allowance: every enabled pass object can be appended, and detailing dimensions and steps use the integer helper’s default maximum.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Request-local detector ownership, sequential result replacement, and shared-context locking contain ordinary partial failures and concurrent mutation. The examined cancellation path removes queued jobs; it does not provide interruption of detailing once a job is executing. Thus normal cleanup does not itself bound time spent holding shared generation capacity.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a server-owned detailing budget before generation begins, with checked limits on pass count, inpaint pixel count, sampling steps, and aggregate work across output images and masks. Apply the policy at the shared execution boundary so request-specific overrides cannot bypass it.

Explanation

The description clearly explains the server ADetailer change, validation evidence, failure behavior, related issue, and additional implementation context. It includes all required template sections, although the checklist remains unchecked.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#2087] requires ADetailer support in sd-server with the configured model and options. The server now applies ADetailer after image generation on OpenAI-compatible, SDAPI, and native async paths. The implementation supports configured prompts, negative prompts, extra arguments, multiple passes, and per-request SDAPI settings. It reports detection and inpainting failures. Requests without --ad-model bypass processing. The issue has no separate automated-test requirement. The reported builds and request checks support the implemented behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue [#2087]. Server integration, SDAPI request parsing, progress handling, failure reporting, alpha preservation, and ADetailer mask and crop support implement the requested feature. The documentation describes the new server behavior. No unrelated product change appears in the provided whole-pull-request summary.

I think there are three things we should fix here:

  • adetail_image() always converts the image to RGB, even when nothing is detected. Replacing the original image with its output will drop transparency from RGBA models like Qwen Image 2.1. We should preserve the alpha channel.
  • SDAPIPreviewGuard is destroyed before the detail passes start, so /sdapi/v1/progress reports the server as idle while it’s still working. The task should stay active until detailing finishes.
  • Since SDAPI is a WebUI compatibility interface, I’d expect it to honor alwayson_scripts.ADetailer.args, including per-request enable/disable and settings. Right now, setting --ad-model applies ADetailer to every request and ignores those client controls. We should keep the WebUI behavior here instead of requiring clients to use <sd_cpp_extra_args>.

Fixed all three points:

  • ADetailer now preserves the original alpha channel, both with and without detected objects.
  • SDAPI progress stays active until detailing finishes.
  • SDAPI now reads alwayson_scripts.ADetailer.args for per-request enable/disable and supported settings, including multiple passes and parameter inheritance.

The detector is still restricted to the server-configured model. Unsupported options return an error instead of being silently ignored.

Tested on CUDA with SD1.5 and the converted YOLOv8 face detector, including actual inpainting of an RGBA input, batch generation, hires, and the native async API. The RGBA test preserved every alpha value. An unchanged OpenAI request also produced pixel-identical output before and after.

Bound ADetailer generation dimensions and steps. docs/adetailer.md limits pixel mask settings, not inpaint dimensions or sampling steps. ADetailer accepts positive ad_inpaint_width, ad_inpaint_height, and ad_steps; adetail_image then allocates and generates at those values for each detected mask.

The base SDAPI path also lacks upper bounds for width and height, but it caps steps at 1..100. This PR adds an unbounded-step path and can multiply dimension and step work across detected masks.

Apply finite shared limits to generation width and height. Apply the base 1..100 step limit to ADetailer overrides before they reach adetail_image.
